Princess Anne took part in a documentary to celebrate her 70th birthday

Thistle service during royal week

I wonder if HRH Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, is mad about having to make a big deal about her 70th birthday. Anne turns 70 in August, and she was already forced (!!) to participate in a Vanity Fair cover profile, and now it looks like she’s also had to do a documentary about her life and work. One wonders if she’ll find a way to be slightly shady about the “younger royals” again. And for the record, I still believe Anne was being shady about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as much as the Sussexes. Anne has been around a long time and she doesn’t care for any of the youths. Anyway, about this documentary…

Princess Anne is opening up about the highs and lows of her royal life, including the dramatic failed kidnapping attempt she endured and becoming the first royal Olympian. Queen Elizabeth’s only daughter of her four children has cooperated in what’s being called a “landmark” documentary that will chart her life, talk with her children — Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall — and those who have worked alongside her. The 90-minute film is to mark her 70th birthday on August 15.

Using her formal title, Princess Royal: Anne at 70 airs on ITV in the U.K. in the coming weeks, it was confirmed on Thursday. In it, Anne talks “frankly” about the failed kidnap attempt in 1974 and, a press release said, producers have sourced previously-unseen family footage. As well as conversations with her two children, the makers talk with her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence. “She was the first daughter of a monarch to go to school, the first royal Olympian and the first child of a monarch to insist her children were called ‘Mr,’ and ‘Miss,’ ” the press release adds, referring to Peter and Zara’s lack of royal titles.

School friends tell the program of Anne’s “desire to be ‘one of the girls’ before she came of age as the swinging ’60s made way for the turbulent ’70s.” Viewers will see and hear “how she relaxes with her children, her grandchildren and her animals at her Gloucestershire estate while Sir Tim reflects on a shared love of the sea and much else,” the press release adds.

The documentary, which followed Princess Anne for around a year, also looks at her famous no-nonsense approach and work ethic. “Her Ladies in Waiting admit that they struggle to keep up with her relentless pace while her charities reveal a passionate patron who keeps everyone on their toes.”

[From People]

I’ve spoke about this before, but did you guys watch Prince Charles at 70, the documentary made around his 70th birthday? It was a truly great glimpse at Charles’ life and passions, and the documentary crew followed him during many of his events around the UK. He actually showed a really funny side of himself – he flirted with younger working class women, he yelled at farm animals, he did an impromptu prayer with some Christian youths. I hope that’s what Anne’s documentary is like – I hope it shows her working and interacting with people, because I feel like Anne probably does have a spicy personality which she rarely shows publicly. And yes, everyone will check to see if Anne has anything to say about the “younger royals.”

Prince Charles at 70 was excellent and totally changed my attitude toward him: I am talking a complete 180. Charles could not “fake” what was captured on film for that documentary.

I hope “Princess Royal: Anne at 70” is just as good and I hope it airs in the USA on PBS in August at the same time in airs on ITV. I would hate to have to wait 4 months to see it.

I don’t care much for him, but I give him more tolerance because I want William to have a long wait.

So royal can participate in documentary? I thought that was against protocol? why aren’t royal gossiper rats talking about this instead of talking about Meghan? the irrelevant one LOL

    • Becks1 says:

Only against protocol for Meghan, lol.

Honestly, the obsession of the british media on Meghan is a little worrisome. without her, what on earth would some of these RRs talk about on twitter??

      • VS says:

I wish I could answer your question! i have blocked most of them but I still see some people with receipts (which is good because it highlights their hypocrisy); It looks like they get engagement only when they post about Meghan & Harry….strange that the ones who have left continue to overshadow the ones who stayed; at the same time, they say Meghan and Harry want attention….I do understand that you don’t need to be particularly smart to be a royal gossiper but come on!

  3. ABritGuest says:

Yes it was against protocol when the South Africa documentary came out or against protocol when Meghan had Telegraph profile. Like there aren’t countless documentaries with riyals& someone like Anne hasn’t done TV interviews- most famously on her kidnap attempt.

Will be good to see Anne at work being the busy bee. Interested to see more of her approach to duties& service

  4. Becks1 says:

I think Anne was being shady to both the Sussexes and Cambridges, but as time has gone on I think it was aimed more at the Cambridges. I think she probably saw Harry and Meghan’s desire to take on big projects and initiatives as a good thing as long as they didn’t lose track of “the wheel” (i.e. the royal bread and butter events) – so I think the comment was partly aimed at them for that reason. But I think it was really aimed at the Cambridges, who don’t have big initiatives or projects and don’t make up for it with the kind of events Anne handles so well, AND have been working royals for long enough for Anne to have an opinion on their work ethic.

  5. janey says:

My husband met her recently and said how forthright she was, apparently can’t be photographed whilst having a cup of tea, and very chatty and interested about the project he had worked on.

I think she looks like a Roald Dahl villain. she’s the least scandalous I suppose. blah.

    • Courtney B says:

She had quite the scandal in the 90s. She was married to mark Phillips when love letters from her now-husband Tim Lawrence were published. Her marriage was pretty open so I always thought it was a bit romantic that the naval officer fell in love with the least ‘princessy’ Princess and was so besotted.

    • Noodle says:

@Janey, remember when she and other world leaders (I think Trudeau was in the group) were caught on mic gossiping about Trump? It made me like each of them better. I can see how her forthrightness was on display there.

    • Aitana says:

Haha! I was about to comment regarding her hairstyle in the more recent photos of her…like Dracula, really. Then I read your comment…too funny.

    • PrincessK says:

There are lots of interesting rumours about Princess Anne…..quite apart from the Parker Bowles one.

  6. Jen says:

So she works her staff so hard that they can’t keep up with her? Could she be…. demanding? A diva? Oh no. That’s only when it’s the black woman expecting her staff to work hard.

  7. Courtney B says:

She wasn’t the first royal Olympian. They went back until at least 1912 and there’ve been a number. Among living royals king Juan Carlos and king Constantine both have medals. Queen Sophia was a reserve member, don’t know if she got a medal. King Felipe and Prince Albert competed. Now British Royal Olympian, yes.

  8. Feeshalori says:

Good point, Jen. I’m sure Anne’s staff wouldn’t dare complain if she’s demanding because she’s the queen’s daughter, a blood royal and very privileged. Unlike a certain beleaguered POC duchess. So does Anne send late night/early morning emails too?🤔

  9. cisne says:

this is also to help with distracting from pedo Andy…. when you say “force to do it” I think this is why she is being forced to do it…Ordinarily only Charles would have had that previlege to document his 70th in a highly professionally produced film.

  10. MissMarierose says:

I find it interesting that Betty’s two oldest children have much better work ethics than her two youngest. I wonder why it turned out like that. A difference in nannies or schooling or time with their parents?

    • Lexistential says:

Interesting point I never thought of before. I can believe Charles and Anne were primarily raised by nannies and Prince Philip, and whatever discipline they have was sown from their Early Years (pun intended). Whereas Andrew and Edward had more active parenting from the Queen and seem way more soft by comparison to Charles and Anne.

    • Tessa says:

Princess Anne is her father’s favorite. She is the most like him of them all.
