True Blood’s Stephen Moyer talks vampire sex & rape

Yesterday we covered some early excerpts of Anna Paquin’s Nylon Magazine cover interview. Anna was talking about how people think she’s a dumb blonde, and how she has no problems with nudity. What’s interesting is that Nylon also did a small interview with Anna’s True Blood co-star and fiancée Stephen Moyer, where he talked about vampire sex… and other stuff. To be honest, I don’t have HBO, so I don’t watch the True Blood series, and I haven’t read a book about vampires since I was fourteen and reading Anne Rice’s Vampire Lestat series. So I wasn’t quite sure what Stephen was talking about until CB filled me in. Here’s Stephen’s original comment to Nylon:

Stephen Moyer on Vampire Sex: “The thing about vampirism is that it taps into a female point of view – you have an old-fashioned gentleman with manners who is a f-cking killer… it’s an interesting duality, because in our present society it would be an odd thing for a woman to say, ‘I want my man to be physical with me.’ How, as a modern man, can you f-cking work that? It’s one thing to be polite and gentle… But when do you know it’s OK to crawl out of the mud and rape her [as Bill does in one scene]?… It’s difficult stuff for a bloke, but a vampire gets away with it…. I think that’s the attraction of the show – it’s looking back at a romantic time when men were men, but they were still charming.”

True Blood spoilers for first season: CB says, “I am trying to remember exactly when the rape scene happened, (like the context, I remember the scene in the show) but to me it didn’t look like rape and in the book it’s more like rough sex. I know! She is in the graveyard where he’s sleeping because he’s trying to hide out. Normally he sleeps out in a “hidey hole” at his house. It wasn’t rape and was frantic reunion sex after she thought he was dead as far as I could tell… He reaches out of the ground and grabs her and she’s crying hysterically and tells him that she thought he was dead. They have quick dirty sex, and it seemed sudden and forceful yet consensual to me. It certainly wasn’t like a rape scene at all.”

That sort of clears it up for me – first, I definitely think Moyer was analyzing the sexuality of the characters, it wasn’t like he was trying to claim “rape is cool” or whatever. Secondly, I think if CB is right, the characters’ sex was rough and dirty, but generally consensual. The point Moyer seemed to be making was that in the real world, women don’t really want rough, dirty graveyard sex with a vampire, they just want some passion and heat within a respectful and realistic relationship, but there’s a fine line. That’s my take on it, anyway.

Moyer and Paquin attended the party for Nylon Magazine last night, and (link has spoilers!) Radar’s got a video of Moyer’s red carpet interview. Moyer told Radar that he and Anna are thrilled to be engaged, but they haven’t set a date for the wedding yet. He also talked about the upcoming season, in which he reveals some major spoilers. The way he talks about Anna is kind of cute. I really do think Moyer and Paquin adore each other.

You and CB are right about the scene. She thought he had been killed and went to the cemetery to mourn over his original grave. He knew his regular hidey hole wasn’t safe, so he slept in the cemetery. He “took” her, which is different from rape. It was rough and dirty, but completely consensual. Just a bad choice of words on his part.

If no one is going to say it, then I will. Girl needs to fix that huge gap in her teeth! Other than that, she’s pretty.

I’m agreeing – that wasn’t a rape scene at all. I understand what he was trying to say; women say they want a sensitive man with manners but the reality is that a lot of women desire a rough, aggressive man in the bedroom. That’s why so many women found that scene to be hot, we often want men to just take us and do with us what they please. It is a fine line to walk but if you have good communication with your partner, it can totally be achieved.

Of course, I’m not going to ask for a random hook up to pin me down and hurt me, so it’s also all about the context.

I thought it looked like rape when I saw the scene, but I’d read the book so I knew what was going on.

    They are so cute together!

I love the gap. She’s a little rebel! What great casting T.B. has. Can you imagine anyone else as Sooky?

One might argue there was surprise induced non-consent that gave way to enthusiastic you’re-alive consent. So he’s right as well as wrong on the meaning of the scene.

Am I one of the few disgusted by that scene? He was covered in dirty and mud. All of him. Let me repeat, ALL of him. Then without washing or even reaching a condom they do the deed. Gross!

    Totally not a rape scene.

    But quite gross nonetheless.

Not every woman likes it when a guy stays on the safe side of the line. I get what Moyer is saying. Some girls are attracted to that. And no I’m not beating around the bush- I am absolutely one of them. It’s my biggest fantasy. There you go. Good Morning.

Moyer chose the wrong word. It is cosensual rough sex.

Anyway, Paquin and Moyer make a lovely couple.

the first book, “dead until dark”, doesn’t have a “rape” scene, it’s just rough sex, like you said.
there’s a “near rape” scene in either the second (club dead)or third book (living dead in dallas), which takes place in a car trunk.
that’s the moment sookie recalls as when bill forced himself on her, as opposed to the graveyard one.

definitely not a rape scene. My wife and I watch the show religiously and that particular scene got us both, um…excited….anyway it’s an awesome show and I’m glad that in season two they aren’t just showing a bunch of sex scenes and including different types of mythical creatures. Shame on CB for not watching this show, it’s amazing. If you dont have HBO (or showtime) just bit torrent the files, they’re easily available. Just download the Utorrent software and do a google search for “true blood torrent”.

I really like True Blood, but these two characters are the least interesting to me. The supporting cast and side stories are much more entertaining.

It sounds like he has no concept of what rape actually is. That scene wasn’t a rape as Sookie would clearly never actually say no to him anyway but yeah, it was really gross. A lot of the sex on that show is disgusting. Like bloody sex on a bed with a half dead murdered woman. Not sexy, just ridiculous.
