  1. Jessica says:

It sounds like Angie is speaking Gypsy or something!! HAHA

  2. JustMe says:

The worst accent I’ve ever heard was from Willem Dafoe in “The Last Temptation of Christ” – I thought Christ was in Brooklyn!!

  3. elisabetta says:

Sookie and Bill on True Blood… Love the show, but the Kiwi and Brit can NOT pull off the southern twang.

  4. truthSF says:

JustMe: The worst accent I’ve ever heard was from Willem Dafoe in “The Last Temptation of Christ” – I thought Christ was in Brooklyn!!

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Your comment literally had me ROTFLMBAO. Funniest shit i’ve heard today, thanks for the laugh.

  5. RAMONA says:

Has anyone forgotten the way that Demi Moore ‘butchered’ her so called South Carolina southern accent in The Butcher’s Wife?…Butchery at its best….We love to hate it though…

  6. Toe says:

    Richard Gere “The Jackal”

  7. truthSF says:

RAMONA, I just saw the movie again, and I couldn’t agree with u more. Make u wonder if the title of the movie came before or after the completion of the movie.

  8. Toe says:

Christian Bale’s Batman. God that voice was horrible. Like talking with a dick down your troat.

  9. sarah says:

Shannon Elizabeth in American Pie. Terrible, but what can you expect?

  10. Canadian Fan says:

Oh, no. Kevin Costner in Robin Hood…He just kinda gave up trying to keep up the accent about halfway through the movie! LOL

  11. dcv74 says:

That movie and all the accents was embarrassingly bad – but wow she looks so gorgous in that picture!

  12. Victoria says:

ha ha ha!! I fogot about Costners accent in Robin Hood! It was awful! Alan Rickman carried that movie on his back. He was awsome!

  13. Rose says:

Richard Gere the Jackal! Hahaha, I’d forgotten about that, Brad Pitt in The Devil’s Own was pretty awful too.
Cate Blachette was amazing as Veronica Guerin, totally nailed the Irish accent.

  14. Persistent Cat says:

The Shipping News. The only one who had a convincing Newfoundland accent were Gordon Pincent (who’s a Newfie) and Judy Dench. All the others sounded Irish (to me, I’m sure an Irishman/woman would tell me otherwise).

Have you ever seen that video of the woman who does 25 accents. The “Toronto” accent is horrific. There are a lot of Canadian accents and I have no idea what she’s doing.

As for True Blood, Bill goes in an out of accent all the time. I laughed out loud at the one time he said, I am vampire” all dramatic and old fashioned like. What was that?

  15. Praise St. Angie! says:

Alan Rickman carries EVERY movie he’s in!

well, not really, but I do love the guy.

he was so funny in both Galaxy Quest and Dogma.

  16. Toe says:

In the above pic, Angie’s lips are perfect. Even Alexander could not resist those lips & eyes.

  17. Sarah says:

God, back when Angelina was beautiful. What the heck happened to her??

  18. Bill Hicks is God says:

Toe, her lips look like a sheep’s pucker after the farmer pulls out.

  19. Lizzie says:

I never saw the movie Cold Mountain, but isn’t Renee Zellweger from the South?

  20. Praise St. Angie! says:

Bill Hicks, that was so wrong and yet so funny.

I always look forward to reading your comments!

to Sarah…what happened to her was that she stupidly messed with her face. Plastic surgery isn’t always an improvement. Though hers has been subtle (that is, no drastic changes a la Jennifer Grey) it still was a mistake.

I’m no fan of hers but I do think she looks beautiful in this pic…but now? not so much.

  21. barneslr says:

I’d forgotten about the Butcher’s Wife…! Shame on me, being a South Carolinian and all that. But yes…THAT gets my vote as the worst of them all. I’ve been here over 30 years, and I’ve never, ever heard anyone talk like she did in that train wreck of a movie.

  22. sunnysunday says:

angelina jolie should have been on that list at least three times then:
    1. alexander
    2. beuwolf (spelling?)
    3. a mighty heart

she sounded THE SAME in all of those… and her acting was too far behind the horrible voice work either….

  23. Rose says:

Julia Roberts in Steel magnolias was another one, ‘Nah mahmaw, hush yaa moauff.’

  24. Baby says:

This isn’t a movie, but how about Dennis Hopper’s Bosnian ‘accent’ in 24’s first season? That was really god-awful.

  25. Rae says:

Lizzie, she’s from TX. You should watch it. I think she definitely deserved the Oscar. And I don’t know why people dump on her accent. I guess people who haven’t traveled through the south don’t realize that not all southern accents are Scarlett O’Haraesque. Each area has it’s own distinctive twang.

  26. Rae says:

And of course, the Queen of Louisiana swings both ways. Anyone who’s read the books knows that. In the immortal words of Eric, if you live hundreds of years, there isn’t much you don’t try.

  27. Rose says:

Oh and I nominate Sean Connary for playing the ‘Spaniard’ in Highlander. * guffaws*
‘MchCloud zerh cen be o-n-elly one.’

  28. fizXgirl314 says:

Toe, I was having lunch when I read your comment about batman and spit all over my desk.. thanks lol :/

    and Bill Hicks, always hilarious…

I gotta stop reading these boards during lunch…

  29. Green Is Good says:

Angelina Jolie in any Lara Croft movie. Now that is a baaaad accent right there.

  30. truthSF says:

Rose, STOP IT!!! My stomach hurts from laughing so much after reading your comments:

‘MchCloud zerh cen be o-n-elly one.’

    ‘Nah mahmaw, hush yaa moauff.’

  31. Enonymous says:

I don’t know about the accent but I though Angelina Jolie looked incredibly beautiful in Alexander, at least that was a plus for her.

  32. lrm says:

okay,so how about we list good accents? who’s a good actor and can carry an accent?
sorry, but goop does,in shakespeare in love. even joe fiennes gave her props for that. and that was before she married an englishmen.she had a true accent.
    renee in bridget jones diaries….

    johnny depp does pretty well.
who else? oh,cate blanchett of course is fantastic, like judy dench. i honestly cannot think of many =robert downey jr is another who can do the accent thing well….

    most are truly horrible!

  33. cleveland says:

I think a good rule of thumb for actors is that unless your last name is Streep, Blanchett, Dench, or Winslett, don’t do an accent!

  34. nnn says:

Most of the actors who are convincing in switching accent and languages are Europeans for obvious reasons and unknown by the general american public.

I think that Diane Krugger is obviousely great in german, very good in English and French and averagely good in italian.

Jody Foster is also very good in French but yet, again had been in the Lycée Français as a kid and a teen.

  35. mila says:

I’ll nominate Meryl Streep for her Polish accent in Sophie’s choice. She was brilliant in this movie but no one in Poland could understand what she was saying:)But I can forgive her cause I love her.
I think also Gerard Butler’s Irish accent in P.S. I love you was quite ridiculous. As a Pole I can’t judge it but my Irish boyfriend almost laughed his a** off listening to it- at least something enjoyable in this movie!

  36. Hieronymus Grex says:

King Leonidas with a Scottish brogue anyone ?

  37. RAMONA says:

As for great accents in the movies , I think Tony Collette does a great job at American accents even though she is a true Aussie from down under, she was born in New South Wales,Australia!! Watching ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ or ‘The Sixth Sense’,you would never know because her American accent is flawless!!

  38. oh my says:

@ Toe, I couldn’t agree more about Bale – whatever that was, it was a nasty distraction to the movie

@Irm – I’ve noticed that most of the British actors are pretty darn good at them

  39. Chicoulina says:

I loved The Dark Knight but Christian Bales accent totally ruined it for me.It distracted me so much. That was the worst accent-voice ever!

One of the best accents is Kyra Sedgwick in The Closer. She’s very good.

I love Angelina Jolie and I’m Greek but I have to admit that her accent in Alexander was wtf?It would have been better if she talked normal. It didn’t bother me much because I was totally distracted by Colin Farrel’s blond hair.Worst hair ever!!!

  40. Vermithrax says:

I applaud the list for including Keanu Reeves for Dracula, but it REALLY should’ve also included Keanu for ‘Little Buddha’. Holy Jesus that was rough.

  41. Trillion says:

Cameron Diaz in “Gangs of New York”. So distractingly bad. She was a part time pick pocket with a part time Irish accent. And a bad one.

  42. REDRED2 says:

RAMONA, I totally agree with you because I had no idea she wasn’t American.

  43. REDRED2 says:

She looks pretty in this picture. Nothing like she looked in Wanted.

  44. xploxite says:

I saw the movie about 20 times *ALEXANDER* I loved it cause two of my fovorite actors were in it, my gorgeous sexy, seductive & brilliant actor COLIN FARRELL & BEAUTIFUL & talented actress ANGELINA JOLIE & there was unbelievable CHEMISTRY between these two GORGEOUS people. I love to see them play another movie together & recommend it to everyone, you would loveeeeeeeeeeee it.

  45. For Sooth? says:

Ramona – Tony Collette for sure. She’s right in there with Kate for nailing the American accent.
If we are talking True Blood – the Aussie actor who plays Jason should get a nod. He sounds SOOOO much better than Sookie and Bill.
I do think that Rene does well. She did a more refined English accent in her movie about Beatrix Potter. I don’t think she gets enough credit for her work.

Angelina, lay off the botox. You once were the creme’ de la creme’. Now I see a bit of the farce encroaching on your face.

  46. Toe says:

@xploxite: You saw the movie 20 times heh? Maybe you could help me then. I was looking for the name of the gay (i think)dancer that was dancing for Alexander. I just could not forget that guy. His dance was…exotic?!

It lets me remember the pharao guy that played in the movie “StarGate”. Let me search his name…”Jaye Davidson”. OMG that guy was sooo beautiful.
    Thanks

  47. Jazz says:

What about Dennis Hopper in Ticker? He started out with an Irish accent but it disappeared halfway through the movie.

  48. orion70 says:

Persistant Cat, you are SO right on the mark with that one, although I have to say Pete Postlethwaite was pretty good in the film. The movie dissappointed so many native Newfoundlanders, of which I am one. Julianne Moore was horrible in there with that accent. That and everyone sitting around eating their flipper pie. Never mind the fact that there is NO one Nfld accent, it depends on where you are.

There are however dialects that sound very much irish, and areas where gaelic was spoken until about 100 years ago. I grew up close by those areas (the irish loop), and there’s a lot of similarities in the dialects. However, there’s also parts of Nfld that are french, and places that have the other various accents, and this is not counting the number of aboriginal people in that mix.

BTW….For a great Nfld movie around the same time, see “Rare Birds”.

If we’re going to talk good accents, I’d also throw Eric Bana into the mix, and i’ll give props to Leonardo Dicaprio for the south african, but not for some of his other roles. Also Don Cheadle, and Chiwetel Ejiofor and most DEFINITELY Hugh Laurie and Ben Kingsley.

  49. xploxite says:

    To: Toe

He played the role of Bogoas in the movie *Alexander* & his name is *Francisco Bosch*.

  50. Sarah says:

I love, LOVE, L O V E Anderson Cooper’s little rant. Gosh, that’s exactly, why I want his love child. He really needs to reproduce!! 🙂

  51. patricia says:

I guess I don’t see much “work” on Angelina’s face. She is much thinner than she was in Alexander. That might make her seem that way, but comparing two pictures side by side, don’t see what you are talking about.

  52. stoopidmovie says:

Chicoulina are you drunk or just from canada because you obviously dont have an ear for southern accents. Kyra Sedgwick does the worst southern accent i have EVER heard. With a father from South Carolina and myself being born in Georgia i can tell. Her accent is so horrible it makes me sick. It’s insulting. It’s like someones holding a gun to her head forcing her to overact
