Is Donald Trump trying to lay the groundwork for cancelling the third debate?

President Trump and Joe Biden Meet in First Presidential Debate

When Donald Trump pitched a fit about the second debate and ended up pulling out of it, I honestly thought that would be the end of it? Trump was likely already Covid-positive during the first presidential debate three weeks ago, and he STILL hasn’t disclosed when his last corona-negative test was before that week. So when a still feverish and ‘roid-ragey Trump threw a tantrum about the second debate going virtual, I thought that would be the end of debates. Not so much – the “third” debate is still supposed to happen IN PERSON on Thursday, October 22. But the Trump campaign has been laying the groundwork for a likely Trump withdrawal:

With 15 days to go until the election, and Trump losing by double digits in most national polls, the third presidential debate represents the final chance for the campaign to change anyone’s mind. And yet, for some reason, Team Trump appears to be laying the groundwork to pull out.

In a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates, Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien demands that the last debate be about foreign policy, rather than the announced topics (Fighting COVID-19, Climate Change, Race in America, American Families, National Security, and Leadership). While Stepien acknowledges that such issues “are serious and worthy of discussion,” and actually do touch on foreign policy, he writes, embarrassingly, that “almost all of them were discussed at length during the first debate won by President Trump over moderator Chris Wallace and candidate Joe Biden.”

Then he claims that Biden is “desperate to avoid conversations about his own foreign policy record” and accuses the CPD of “pro-Biden antics” which don’t actually exist outside the deranged heads of the Trump campaign. Then he whines about the fact that there’s been talk of cutting candidate’s mics during the proceedings, which only arose because Trump interrupted Biden so many times during the first debate that it wouldn’t have been unreasonable to zap him with a cattle prod so his opponent could get a word in edgewise.

[From Vanity Fair]

I don’t know if this is an attempt to lay some groundwork for an eventual cancellation? Trump looked pathetic for cancelling the virtual second debate. All of the whining about mics being cut off – an extreme measure introduced solely because of Trump’s interruptions – is more like a child’s attempt to see where their parent’s limits are, what they can get away with, you know? But yeah, obviously Trump doesn’t want to talk about the coronavirus or race or climate change. He wants to just scream “Burisma!!” and “But His Emails!”

Also: Trump is already criticizing the debate moderator, NBC News’ Kristen Welker, a longtime political reporter. Trump called her a “radical Democrat” who has been “screaming questions at me for a long time…. She’s always been terrible & unfair, just like most of the Fake News reporters, but I’ll still play the game.”

I do not think he will participate once he understands he will be muted.
In my head, it plays out as him stomping off stage and people laughing.
But my guess is he will make up an excuse as to why the debate is “rigged” against him and will cancel like the coward he is.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Watch…Thursday morning there will be an excuse. His massive ego will not let him be “silenced” (due to his own boorishness, of course).

    • Lady2Lazy says:

They had better have a mic mute policy due to his abhorrent behaviour last debate. The first debate was disgusting.

      • Esmom says:

They do but JFC it is ridiculous to me that they have to change their protocols, which no one else has ever had a problem with, for ONE GUY who can’t manage to follow simple rules. He deserves to be disqualified, really.

    • Mac says:

I guess Trump wants to debate his many, many foreign policy failures.

  3. Sayrah says:

God I hate him so much. Praying for a crushing defeat!!

    • Lady2Lazy says:

As I am. I am so happy to see so many that have actually registered to vote this year and the number of votes that have already been cast. I love his threats of leaving the country if he loses, let him be someone else’s problem. It sickens me that we have actual people living amongst us that actually voted for him, and some that still support him! We have a bunch of f#cking idiots running around.
And yes, the letter is a complete joke, but it would be funny if they asked him questions about many countries that he doesn’t know that exists! Foreign policy, what BS!

      • Miranda says:

Oooh, I think they should just make up countries, or use fictional places like Narnia or Mordor, and watch him act like he knows everything about a place that doesn’t even exist. That would be hilarious.

(A friend of mine did something like this in her high school paper right around the time the Iraq war started. She took a poll asking if America should bomb Agrabah, the fictional Middle Eastern place from Aladdin, and apparently about 1/3 of the people said yes.)

      • FYI says:

Biden should ask him to point to Finland on a map. (Trump thought Finland was part of Russia.)

  4. Gina says:

Kaiser – I read your headline and instantly thought, “Yes”.

I hope he does back out. I don’t want to give him any more attention.

    • whatWHAT? says:

same here. yes, OF COURSE he is.

the only kind of “debate” format that he’d be OK with is something like his Nazi rallies, where he gets to rant about whatever he wants, Hannity is the “moderator” who just sits there and nods and says “RIGHT!” at appropriate times, and Biden is propped up on the stage a la Hannibal Lecter in SOTL. muzzled, but there, so 45 can point and reference him.

      • Yup, Me says:

They don’t wvwn keev a muzzled Biden. Just put a chair there and let him rant at it like that dumbass Clint Eastwood stunt.

  5. nicegirl says:

It’s so loco we’re crazy and ‘radical’

  6. Ann says:

There should not be a debate at all. One of the candidates has a deadly infectious virus. That hasn’t changed. Of course this is all so trumpian, pretending like everything is fine and normal when it’s so painfully obvious that everything is going wrong.

Biden’s team should insist this one be digital too. Who cares if trump doesn’t like it. He is a vessel for the plague, who gives a fuck what he wants over the well being of dozens of people, including Biden! Uh. 2 weeks. Just 2 more weeks.

  7. Hollah says:

That Stepien letter was so passive aggressive and whiny. The GOP just sinks lower and lower. Not a shred of pride or dignity left, just pure victimology.

    • Nana says:

Everything they criticise their opponents for… playing the victim, stifling free speech and freedoms etc… they’re actually much much worse offenders….

  8. Leigh says:

It’s a play by play from the narcissist handbook. I loathe him.

  9. bluemoonhorse says:

Please cancel. I don’t want it.

  10. MommaDawna says:

    Pray for us. 😕

  11. grabbyhands says:

He is 100% laying the groundwork for canceling it and they debate topic issue is just a smokescreen to do so.

They have kneecapped him by not only controlling the topics (hopefully they will not concede on this point) but also with the mic cut offs. He absolutely does not want to do it and the fact that he’s already begun to attack the moderator is proof. He is pathetically transparent.

  12. Rapunzel says:

” the first debate won by President Trump over moderator Chris Wallace and candidate Joe Biden.”

Chris Wallace was the moderator, idiots. You weren’t debating him!

    • Esmom says:

But that’s the narrative they have put out there. Fits right in with Trump’s “press is the enemy of the people” garbage. Their pettiness knows no bounds.

    • Bread and Circuses says:

Orange Foolius also claimed he “defeated” Savannah Guthrie in his town hall.

He’s a one-trick pony, and the one trick is malignant narcissism. He has to spin-doctor every situation into a fantasy where he “won”.

  13. Becks1 says:

I think the only way he stays in the debate is if his campaign convinces him it will improve his polls.

I don’t really want to hear Trump talk for two minutes on a topic, lol. Can you imagine? “Mr. President, your administration’s coronavirus response was abysmal. What do you think you should have done differently?”

“That’s a stupid question. You know who else is stupid? Sleepy joe biden.” I mean, its going to be a mess either way.

    • Esmom says:

Exactly. You know he’s going to try to bring up Hunter again every chance he gets. Why give the platform to someone who has zero interest in participating with even a shred of good faith?

      • CityGirl says:

Exactly. No matter The question his response is always going to be about Hunter biden’s laptop and Ukraine etc. Any way it is presented,
it’s going to be a shit show

  14. Lizzie says:

He will show up and spend his 2 minutes for every question saying ‘Hunter Biden, Hunter Biden, Hunter Biden…’.

    • Miranda says:

While I would prefer a civilized debate (fat chance!), if Biden wanted to play rough, he could always bring up the shady shit that Uday and Qusay Trump have been involved with. For example, wasn’t Junior meeting/plotting with the Russians back in 2016? And does anyone else remember the story about Eric funneling money he supposedly raised for St. Jude’s hospital into his own businesses?

  15. Miranda says:

Oh for fuck’s sake, climb down off the fucking cross, you whiny-ass snowflakes.

  16. FancyPants says:

He can’t cancel his appearance because canceling made him look so bad last time. He wants to berate the debate committee into canceling it for him, and since they won’t do that, all he has left is to try to set it up as “unfair” to him because it’s so unfair that only one candidate sh*ts his pants whenever he gets asked a question.

  17. nicole says:

the man is a damn lunatic. I hope you get it right in November, America.

  18. Leah says:

No doubt he’ll claim he’s got covid 19 again and will another lap around the hospital in his limousine. Again.

I’ve already cast my vote so the debates are really nothing more than me laughing at Trump and laughing at Trump again as Biden pisses him off with facts. Kodak moment: Trump’s face when Biden mentioned the Clorox in the first debate.

I can’t believe anyone is on the fence at this point, not after all that’s happened.

    • Miranda says:

So, the Clorox thing. My stepmom is an ER doctor, and she dealt with a couple of people who took Trump’s suggestion to heart. One of them told her that he knew it was dangerous to inject bleach…so he drank it instead. I wish I was kidding. Really speaks to the intelligence of your average Trump supporter, doesn’t it?

      • cassandra says:

I had a pt that cleaned her bathroom with chlorine and got a chemical burn in her respiratory tract. I felt so badly, she was trying to not get sick and ended up in the hospital.

  19. MerlinsMom1018 says:

    Foreign policy, eh?
Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Biden already HAVE experience? I mean, he HAS been a Vice President and traveled to different countries representing President Obama, right??? I have read that there are a number of leaders who are hoping he wins so they can deal with an experienced leader.
So, ok, dumpsters. Foreign policy it is…
It’s almost as if they’re setting themselves up TO get their heads handed to them

  20. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

As soon as I mailed my vote, I’ve been trying to disconnect. It’s so hard. I’m doing better with articles because I’m skimming headlines more, not as many clicks-to-read lol. He is the virus. He will always be the virus…the world’s virus. I can’t wait to see what his life is like after he’s been evicted.

    • Ariel says:

I haven’t disconnected, but i did feel different, i felt better, after casting my vote on Friday- the first day of early voting in my state.

  21. Jay (the Canadian one) says:

Unfair? I’m reminded of when my kids were like 6 and would say “that’s not fair!” and I’d reply “fair doesn’t mean what you think it means. Fair doesn’t mean ‘I get my way.'” So not the first time Trump has reminded me of a small child.

  22. margedebarge says:

The honor system is obviously out, we’re way past that. Throw up a big timer and tell both candidates that they have X amount of time to answer the question and once that time is up, cut the mic. Keep the mics off unless it their turn to answer and they have time on the clock.

Just cutting the mics at the discretion of the moderator/producer leaves them wide open to complaints of censorship (even if they’re invalid). I’m sure the right will still find a way to piss and moan about a timer system, but at least it’s more clear cut.

  23. Valerie says:

He is, and in a classic case of Republican projection, the Trumpies are predicting that Joe will be the one to cancel with a fake case of COVID.

  24. Julia K. says:

I have said this before so here it is again; Trump wants out so he can rescue his dying business empire. His disorganized thinking prevents him from having a clear plan. He needs someone to blame. His kids messed up big time and millions of dollars lost. In his mind, he is the only one who can turn Trump Inc around. He wants to be seen as the victim and Biden the crook who stole the election, while he can leave with some some sense of having won, after all. Just my opinion.
