Letitia Wright on dating: ‘I’ve got [a lot] going on, but finding the person is difficult’

Not only is Letitia Wright creating space to showcase actors of color through her production company, ThreeSixteen, we now get the see Letitia’s more dramatic side in her upcoming projects. She will play Altheia Jones-LeCointe, the leader of the British Black Panther Party, in an episode of Steve McQueen’s series Small Axe, coming to Prime on November 20th. (Update by CB: Small Axe is an five-part anthology which tells “personal stories from London’s West Indian community” from the 60s-80s. Other epsiodes focus on different stories from that era.) She’s also in Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile, out December 18th.

With the death Chadwick Boseman in August, many fans are wondering what direction The Black Panther sequel will take. However, friends and co-stars of Chad’s are still grieving. Letitia spoke with Net-a-Porter where she talked about Chadwick, her production company and dating.

On the thought of reprising her Black Panther role
“We’re just still mourning Chad, so it’s not something I even want to think about. The thought of doing it without him is kinda strange. We’re just grieving at the moment, so it’s trying to find the light in the midst of it.”

On being herself and authentic
“It’s something that my father instilled in me… I’ve given up millions for my integrity.”

On the name of her production company Threesixteen Productions
“It was a name that was pressed on my heart. When I was in a dark place, God reached out to me and I kind of see my production company in that sense: there’s an issue and it needs a little bit of saving.”

John Boyega asked her why she’s not dating
“I was like, ‘John man, it’s a waste of my time! Like date for what? Do you date?’ He replied, ‘Tish, man, of course, I date! I need to scout my wife!’

She was working on a romantic film and her dating life came up
“We had a conversation and I was like, ‘I don’t get it! I’m successful, I’ve got all of these things going on for me, but finding the person that’s for me is proving… difficult…’ We literally wrapped on Friday, so it’s still messing with me!”

[From Net-a-Poter]

I love Letitia. I’ve said before she seems to be quite grounded. I will say I am irritated with people’s rush to know what will happen with Black Panther. Let the cast and crew grieve FFS. These people were just as blindsided as the public about Chad’s diagnosis and subsequent death. I am sure the director and producers will do his character justice.

I do love that Letitia and John Boyega are doing a five part series about the Black Panther Party in the U.K. I didn’t even know the party had an office in the UK! I also love that Small Axe will be about the modern history of Black Britons as I am completely clueless about it.

I will say, as a “big sister,” Letitia could date, a little. I feel if she puts what she wants out there it will come to her. Plus dating can be fun when you know yourself and what you want. I hope she continues to have these conversations with John, perhaps being slightly older he can help broaden her world view a bit. I, in turn, will continue to watch Letitia’s star rise. I think we are just seeing the beginning of what she can do artistically and as an activist. In the meantime, I will patiently await news about Marvel’s Black Panther sequel, while I continue to, on occasion, mourn the brilliance that was Chadwick Boseman.

She is a dead ringer for Karen Alexander..

  2. dlc says:

Gorgeous pictures. Lol at John telling Leticia he’s scouting his future wife. Cute story.

  3. FF says:

I think Small Axe is a five part series about the experiences of Afro-Carribean immigrants and the Black British community in the 60s, 70s and 80s; and one ep touches on The Black Panther party, not all of them.

Case in point, I think Letitia and John are in one ep, not all of them, as each one centres on different characters.

Letitia is so cool!! She deserves a partner as cool as her.

P.S. I hope they make Shuri the next Black Panther.

  5. Lucy says:

“Tish, man, of course I date! I need to scout my future wife!” LMAO! That was a fun little story. I so can relate to Letitia on that aspect, though. Especially since we’re close in age.

  6. Case says:

I’m really looking forward to Small Axe.

I’m with Letitia on dating (she’s actually just a few months younger than me and I’m surprised! I thought she was younger). My life feels very complete the way it is. I own a home, I have my pets, I have a good job and good friends. Whoever I get in a relationship with would have to add to what I already consider to be a good life, and that person isn’t easy to find.

Wow, she’s a great model. Would love to see her in more fashion campaigns, maybe for a very avant garde brand.

Her look reminds me of a young Grace Jones and I love looking at pictures of Grace Jones. She seems to have her head on straight and that’s a really good thing in that industry. Dating can be fun when you are in the mood for it, but it can also be exhausting if you have a run of bad dates. I say if someone interesting comes along that makes the effort worth it, go for it, otherwise, enjoy yourself with yourself.
