Jennifer Lopez accused of copying Beyonce for her AMAs performance

I went to bed after an hour of the American Music Awards so I missed Jennifer Lopez and Maluma’s performance of “Pa’ Ti,” their new song which is apparently featured in Jennifer’s new movie Marry Me. There was apparently a BIG conversation happening on Twitter, where Jennifer was accused of “stealing” the entire performance concept from Beyonce’s 2014 Grammy performance of “Drunk In Love.” Considering how often Beyonce, uh, homages though… people were also pointing out that Beyonce’s 2014 performance was sort of a rip-off of Bob Fosse’s stage direction of Chicago. So there you go! I mean, J.Lo did copy Beyonce. But Beyonce heavily homaged some stuff too.

Jennifer wore Balmain to the “red carpet” and it looked like she was homaging Kim Kardashian!

Special mention: I freakin’ loved Billie Eilish’s performance of her new song, “Therefore I Am,” with the “walls” set design. It was so cool.

Yeah, but J Lo is a known thief. Ask Mariah.

    • Sunny says:

      Mariah is petty AF.

      • Julie says:

Mariah is a cartoon diva, sure. But her issue with JLo is far from petty. JLo already had a career, she didn’t need to corporate with a vengeful husband to build it. That’s just ruthlessness. JLo very much gaslights us by pretending to be the victim.

  2. Noki says:

The all draw ‘inspiration’ from somebody. It takes a special creative genius to come up with something totally original at this point. Beyonce was like a mini Tina Turner at the start of her solo, she also borrowed heavily from Jlo who borrowed alot from Janet Jackson and Jlo also kept Ashantis vocals on her records..and so forth.

    • Jojo says:

Thank you! If anyone deserves their flowers and respect from Jlo for her career, it’s freaking Ashanti! I can’t even enjoy jlo now because of it honestly.

    • Julie says:

Could you give examples of Beyonce borrowing from JLo in her early career because I don’t see it. Beyonce publicly idolizes Tina but other than the Austin Powers song, I don’t see an influence. Tina is very up tempo rock/funk.

    • lucy2 says:

I saw a youtube video once (I know, solid source, right? LOL) that showed how most of JLo’s songs had someone else’s vocals on them.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Drawing inspiration is different from doing the same thing. The original should be a springboard, not a landing spot.

  3. lily says:

Maybe they all were inspired by the great Bob Fosse? It is a better guess, c’mom even it can be seen it in Chicago movie by Marshall. Besides, Tina, Beyonce, JLo, Janet, etc. are all always do great performances.

    • Stephanie says:

Yep! My sister asked if J.Lo was going to do Cell Block Tango when we saw this start last night lol

    • Tiffany :) says:

Cell Block Tango was definitely the inspiration, but the interpretation ended up being way too similar.

  4. Bros says:

    All art is referential.

  5. atorontogal says:

I just can’t with that squinty eyed, slightly open mouth look she always does.
As for her copying/stealing, they all do. Nothing’s been original since the 70s!

  6. Sunny says:

    Flashdance anybody?

    Remember dat?

  7. AnnaKist says:

“Homaging”… love it! Ahh, these two divas… That Balnain creation is a bit ordinary.

  8. Princess Peach says:

This is the same woman who “accidentally” left Ashanti’s reference vocals in one of her biggest songs. Copying Beyonce seems like just another day.

  9. Lennn says:

Wouldn’t it be truly original if one of these ladies stepped away from the sexy stripper dances and did something completely different? I don’t mind sexy, but it is getting boring.

    • Grace says:

      Me too! 1000%.

    • Jaded says:

They could take a few cues from Billy Eilish.

      • ME says:

Agree ! Let your talent speak for itself…no need to distract the audience with your body (now matter how lovely it is). Let’s focus on vocals and lyrics and actual music for a change ! I don’t see too many of the male performers on stage with their shirts off grinding.

      • atorontogal says:

@ME @Jaded… this is my thought too. All over social media women are half naked, guys not so much. WHY??!!

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

They don’t have the talent to get by on vocals alone. They need the total package — sex, fashion, dancing, image — to sell their brand.

  10. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Originality is pretty subjective these days. Not only that, sexily slithering across a stage is as old as when only men played women. JLo=🥱

I’m with the post above. If they want to surprise us, try singing without dry humping the audience.

    • Jules says:

So true. Along these lines, I’ve been watching some of Bieber’s recent performances and I’m shocked that he can actually sing! I had no idea, he’s always gotten drowned out with his own theatrics. He’s emotional and singing from a genuine and good place and it shows.

  11. KLO says:

I think she is being blamed for a reason. Beyonce`s performance is all I thought about when I saw a clip of this. Even down to the hairstyle.

JLo can do better than that.

To be fair, Beyonceś whole look and act is a composite of about 20 big female stars over the decades. I recognize her stealing something from someone pretty much every time she does something “artistic”. At least, she tends to copy something more than 10 years old, usually.

And…..Nowadays she has been stealing from Solange. Which makes me cringe.
I love Solange and I think she is a great artist with good songs and a decent voice and needs more attention.

  12. Kate says:

Beyonce used to copy JLo at the beginning of her career. It’s not a big deal if JLo has one “inspired” look.

  13. Gunna says:

She 100% copied Beyonce. Yes they’re both homaging Chicago, but J.Lo is doing that plus copying all the original touches Beyonce added to her version. From the hair to the super literal jail bar lighting to the way she posed with Maluma, it’s all taken straight from the Drunk in Love performance.

If she was doing her own version of Cell Block Tango with her own flair that would be different, even though the basics would similar.

  14. Justmemi says:

I miss the days when singers relied on talent for the most part of their performances, Don’t get me wrong a sexy and confident woman is an attractive thing but these artists dirty dancing in leotards is getting old and boring.

  15. JillyBeann says:

Beyoncé steals from everyone. And never gives credit

    • LoonaticCap says:

I came here to say the same. Beyoncé copies everything so… It’s not an issue to me.
I like both of them most of the times even though both are problematic. So whatever. On to the next one.

  16. Dendenden says:

Don’t forget – single ladies is a direct Fosse / Verdon rip off. Step by step.

  17. Bibi says:

I am so reminiscent of the 80’s 90’s when we had music that didnt swear 99% of the time, when men singers had some emotion when signing about love without always refering to sex directly, when female signers were sexy but classy and didnt look for attention by wearing the skimpiest thing and promoting sexual freedom with …dance moves that are always on the verge of being censored. it’s so bad lol. I miss those days.
