Many questioned why Jennifer Lopez was asked to perform at the inauguration. But for years now, Jennifer has been a pretty big Democratic Party supporter and fundraiser and an advocate for the Latin vote. She did virtual appearances and interviews for the Biden-Harris campaign, and my guess is that President Biden just likes J.Lo. What I found questionable was how J.Lo’s fiance Alex Rodriguez got such prominent seating at the inauguration and how much camera-time he got. Gross. But Jennifer was… fine.
It was fine! Aggressively fine. I’m not going to nitpick, it was okay. My favorite part was the fact that You Know Who was enraged over the fact that such cool people came out to the Biden-Harris inauguration. What she said in Spanish was “One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice of all.”
As for Jennifer’s look, she wore head-to-toe Chanel, including Chanel-branded jewelry. I like that she didn’t play it down, actually. She’s J.Lo! We shouldn’t expect her to leave her sparkle at home because she’s in Washington. We want to see the sparkle!

I thought J-Lo sounded very sweet voiced and did a good job, too. I love that she broke into Spanish. It reminds everyone this land is for everyone. Welcome. We are a nation of immigrants and we needed a reminder of that after the last four years.
Her look was very much her signature style. I’d die of exhaustion trying not to get spills and stains on all the shiny pale colors she wears…and have you ever seen one of her homes? I can’t believe she raises children in them. Pastel perfection. But she has super powers.
Guestwithcat- re: the Spanish break, it’s particularly fitting because one early thing Trump did was take away the Spanish language option on the White House website. And Joe Biden brought it back immediately.

I did not know that, every day I hear another reason to loathe trump, Spanish speaking is our 2nd or other main language and American kids should all be taught at least conversational Spanish in school. Biden is the perfect person to reverse trump as he watched Obama make the laws. He will put things back the way it was, it will take awhile and then he can continue on along his vision which is one of so much more sympathy and empathy than the orange one had. I a already feeling better.
I actually thought she did a nice job too. I was pleasantly surprised, since I’m not usually a fan of her music career. And I loved that she sang in Spanish as well.

She looked fantastic, the clothes were gorgeous. She sang fine. And that’s how it always is with J-lo, and that’s ok, I like her anyway. “Unless she’s about to lip sync Como la flor I don’t really need to hear it”.
The “Let’s get loud” addition was so lame. The rest, well, aggressively fine is a good way to put it.

I love J-Lo but I got scared for a real minute there. Thankfully, she didn’t break into the full chorus 🙂 and the rest was fine for J-Lo. It wasn’t bad.
I actually liked the “let’s get loud” part. It was right after she gave a unifying message in Spanish, and followed with “because this land was made for you and me.” So I didn’t really take it as her inserting her own song into the medley so much as a message of unifying inclusion and a call for us to all make our voices heard.
I liked it too. I read it as a call to civic duty. As I understand it Puerto Rico voted for statehood last year and might get it too with Democrats in control. Really liked that she got to sing ‘this land is your land, this land is my land’.
I have my theory on the “let’s get loud” insertion. She sang this at the Super Bowl last year and it was considered a political performance. So I think in her own internal J.Lo storyline, she felt like she needed bring it back around to “let’s get loud” to conclude this part of her political saga, lol.
I thought Let’s get loud was appropriate. It was a political statement in the super bowl and it was a call for celebration for taking the White House back from the Trumpers.
I love JLo but Coco Chanel was a known Nazi sympathizer and might have been actively working with Nazis – there is some good online sleuthing on this – so I was disappointed in JLo. The outfit was glam but optics are important.

Oh yeah. One of her lovers was an important member of the nazi party and she was giving him information. She managed to avoid arrest after the war because she knew important people and left France. She was also an anti-Semite. Disgusting person really.
Yes. Her Wikipedia page reflects this and declassified documents identify her as a Nazi asset. She fled to Switzerland after the war to avoid the consequences of her actions. The full extent of her activities is unknown but her Nazi sympathies and leanings are well known.
Lawyagal- there’s more than internet sleuthing on CoCo being a Nazi agent. Read Hal Vaughan’s Sleeping With the Enemy: Coco Chanel’s Secret War. He is the scholar who basically brought the issue to modern light. It’s a well researched book, and pretty clear that CoCo was indeed up to disgusting dealings.

I will definitely read this. Has anyone read Mademoiselle Chanel? It’s fiction, but based on her life through WWII. The book details her horror at the Nazi occupation and her relationship with the Nazi party member as an attempt to find her nephew who had been detained. Clearly a very sympathetic portrayal, but I was curious if there was any truth in it.
@Megaladondon that book was trying for a sympathetic portrayal. She was a nazi, an anti-Semite and a homophobic. Some people say that her nephew was actually her son, by one of her lovers, and she gave him to her sister to be raised in a family unit instead. Don’t know if that’s true though. No one has done the dna tests.

Oh come on. Yes, l have heard that but Chanel’s influence on fashion is so massive that you just can’t erase it, even if she was. Nazi sympathiser. I can’t think of any other designer with Chanel’s impact and originality.
Chanel is a very conservative looking brand so I’m not surprised that Jennifer wore it. Does that make her a Nazi sympathizer? Of course not. Not a lot of people know the history of a fashion house they just like how it looks. I think people should stop judging others so harshly.
I appreciate the white in honor of the Suffrage Movement. But the rest was not so great. I couldn’t get past the puffy/pirate blouse and the jacket and pants seemed really dated. It just felt very 2005. But you could feel her excitement to be there and represent.

The coat, from the close ups, was everything. I didn’t care for the outfit on her, she could have worn better. She also began strutting out there and I cringed thinking: GF, this is not a catwalk or the superbowl. IMHO, She was ok.

I didnt love the outfit overall but it was very J Lo to me, her way of dressing simply lol. And I liked her performance – she doesnt have the power vocals that Gaga has but it worked for the songs.

I thought JLO and her Chanel outfit were both beautiful. I honestly don’t listen to much music but I’ve read quite a few blind items about her singing so I was surprised what a great job she did.
“Fine” was exactly the consensus from my group chat during the proceedings. Along with “surprisingly great” for Gaga and a range of “meh” to “offensive” for Garth Brooks. Lol.

I thought she looked luminous. What she wore was perfect for the occasion, dressed up like any of us would if we were singing on an international televised stage at a very important event, yet not so ostentatious as to make it about her (in contrast to Gaga).
Her outfit really looked like Hamilton cosplay to me. She sang beautifully, though.
She looked great but her makeup was off as hell. Never cared for her a singer but she sure has tenacity.
Yes her makeup was terrible. Way overdone and she looked her age for the first time. The makeup was too harsh.
Overall Lady Gaga is the better singer, for sure, but I have to say (as someone who is a trained vocalist) JLo’s performance was better. She’s not a strong singer but she used her voice to great effect and every note, every turn of phrase was perfectly calibrated to support the arrangement of the songs. (I did the hate the “let’s get loud” bit.)
Gaga, on the other hand, has a powerful and splendid voice but she sounded nervous–a little pitchy, a little out of control in spots.
In any case, I think they both did a great job, and it was nice to see them recognize for their support of the Biden/Harris campaign.
Thank you, very interesting perspective from a trained vocalist. JLo has trained her voice a lot which is the best you can do, having a great voice is just an accident about how your vocal cords are when you’re born so… from there on is, all you can do is train it and make best of what you have.
Gaga’s voice may be bigger and more powerful but is that better? I prefer the sound of JLo any day. Gaga never sounds exciting more boring.
I loved her performance and I’ve seen some liberal non Latinos throw shade at the Spanish part which had me side eying them. I love that she reminded America this land is also for us, not just white supremacists! LET’S GET LOUD and let’s never get another wannabe dictator elected ever again!

I didn’t know about Beyoncé! I guess it is too important an event to mess up. I swear J Lo was lip syncing. She sounded too good for herself. I was nervous when she started about what was to come, but she sounded nearly flawless for herself. And if you look at the video of her singing, her lips don’t match the timing! I don’t know…not trying to start a rumor but her voice is notoriously weak. She’s an amazing performer though.
