Even if you get the reference, it isn't clever. Maybe this chick's dad will go to France and get mocked by a waiter about Proust or some such. Adding to what “NONY” said, here’s a guy who was at his job, trying to be friendly and pleasant (to what sounds like a group of pasty idiots,) comes from another country, and frankly even many Americans wouldn’t get the Nottingham reference. I realise that your cultural background is supported and reinforced by pretty much every media outing around you – even the internet has been infused with a lot of Americana.
But. Not everybody shares your cultural background. Other cultures have entirely different myths, jokes, stories, TV programs, shared background, common consciousness. It’s a shame that so many people just seem to see this as ‘Haha, people from other countries don’t know stuff’ and not as ‘they know different stuff’.
