Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop has a new product: a Goop-branded vibrator. It’s already sold out, which is basically why Gwyneth spoke to the NY Times a few days ago. The interview was supposed to be Gwyneth shilling for the new Goopbrator, but she ended up bragging about how she’s always ahead of the curve on everything. Nevermind the extensive documentation vibrators and other toys have been selling out throughout the pandemic because people are stuck at home. Which would mean that Gwyneth is riding a wave, yet again, but she always believes she’s setting the trend. Let’s see if that comes up again in this NY Times piece:
What she was thinking with the Goopbrator design: “I think we were just trying to do something … perhaps a little more intellectual.”
New hobbies during the pandemic: “I wouldn’t say that I developed new ones, but I’ve definitely recommitted or doubled down on some, like meditation. I do that every morning. Before, it was maybe once every couple of weeks, or maybe not at all. Also, I’m cooking all the time, like everybody else in the world.
Playing Patient Zero in Contagion: “I remember being on set and people saying, “This could really happen, and this will happen in our lifetime.”
Posting an Instagram in February 2020 where she wore a mask: “This is a familiar pattern in my life. I do something early, everyone is like, “What is she doing? She’s insane.” And then it’s adopted by the culture. I had to take this trip to France when it was all kicking off. I wore it on the plane, but I didn’t wear it to the function that I was going to, and actually ended up getting Covid and coming home, and being one of the first people that I had heard of to have it.
Whether she plans to take the vaccine: “I still have antibodies. I want everybody else who isn’t protected to go first.
Having to pay out $145K for making dubious and false health claims: “That was stuff that happened a number of years ago when we were still a little company curating and buying third-party brands that were making claims around their products. We’ve come a really long way from being that small start-up. Even with the Yoni eggs. That was really around claims, but it didn’t involve the product. That egg is not dangerous. We still sell it.
My God, she’s such a douche. Shrugging off her site’s consistent pseudoscience as “that happened a number of years ago,” like she doesn’t still host Wellness events where speakers suggest that their stickers cure cancer. And the thing about masks… once again, Gwyneth appropriates something Asian and pretends that she invented it. She did it with yoga, Korean skin care, Yoni eggs and now public mask-wearing. Japanese people and Korean people have been huge mask-wearers for years, even before the Covid pandemic. We don’t talk about that enough, how she steals Asian cultures, puts her white-woman branding on it and acts like she invented everything.

Yeah, I was about to say that billions of Asians were wearing masks before Gwynnie. It’s a part of their culture long before COVID. If they feel under the weather, they wear a mask out of respect for other people’s health. It’s so common they were turning it into fashion statements long before anyone in the West did.
This is definitely true. Back in 2018 I had a cough, on a small Pacific island with a significant Asian population, and my Filipina coworker very graciously offered me a box of disposable masks. It was new to me. Asians are way ahead of the curve on mask-wearing for public health.
Not the first time she’s stolen from Asian culture and it certainly won’t be the last.
I think “stealing from Asian culture” is a bit much. Almost everything we do here is taken from another culture. That claim is too severe IMO. But I do think Goopy is an albatross and its a bit rich that she is now claiming that 3rd party product companies are to blame for the stupid health misinformation she spews.

She would not have this clout had she not poached Asian lifestyle and packaged it as a “clean” alternative up to sell to her vapid, insecure audience. I’ve been studying goop’s media and working on an art piece about her Asian appropriation (as well as Gwen Stefani who literally used asian women as props); she definitely needs to be called out for her cultural bologna, but ALSO she is STILL spreading pseudoscience TODAY. Her most recent goop podcast’s guest is a 5G conspiracy spreader, FFS! She’s really trying to latch and associate her company w degrees and titled doctors and scientists, but then sells something her chiropractor is pushing on to her light brain. the whole thing is like her netflix series: one good episode Trojan horses in the bullsh*t of the rest of the episodes
We need to talk about her Asian appropriation more, AND how it is messed up for Gwyneth to sell a jars of cow turd philosophy at exhorbitant prices. There is a line at “stupid rich women buying her snake oil”, but Gwyneth is also adding to the divide of food wealth with her categorizations of “clean” food. Clean food at those prices are not accessible to everyone, and the food elitism she pushes is real and so problematic.
February was not that early to be wearing masks? Like wasn’t Europe already partly in lockdown? I love thats she claiming she was one of the first people to wear masks/get covid.
I just checked because it feels like that to me as well but here in Germany we went from everything’s fine, just a small epidemic in late February to total lockdown about 2-3 weeks later. It all happened so quickly, the masks came in March. By then Italy was in crisis and everyone was in shock. Can’t believe it’s been a year. I only started wearing masks when it became mandatory which also happened very quickly. Everyone kept saying they’re useless.
Goop needs to shut uuuup.
Besides cultural appropriation, the other issue I take is that at the time, in France, where I am, masks were not available! The only reason masks took so long to be mandatory is because we have no mask production in the country and the entire planet wanted masks!
The privilege is off the charts!

Gwyneth mentioned getting Covid in a jan 21 or dec 20 podcast of goop, she mentioned her husband still has not recovered his sense of smell or taste. She also mentioned-insufferably- how she’s part of a UCLA study (there’s that wagon-attaching again…) to help find a cure for covid. When did Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson get it.. I should Google this stuff… But I do wonder if the event was a superspreader for Hollywood. I think a lot more celebrities got Covid than are letting on bc they weren’t sure about the stigma. I never cease to be amazed by her ability to make everything in the world about HER. I came to this story checking myself and thinking maybe the headline was just a bit of an in-joke around here based on the ridiculous things she’s said in the past. Nope, front and centre. With added offensiveness because as you say, this is already a huge thing in other cultures.
I’m just angry about the anti-science dangerous stuff.

Even in Southeast Asia where I am from, mask wearing is a norm. If we are feeling under the weather, we wear them to protect everyone from ourselves. And yes, we should call out this woman more often with her constant appropriation of Asian culture and making money out of it. She is problematic AF.

We went to Japan the last week of January 2020 (the week that the cruise ship docked in Yokohama) and 50-ish% of people I saw on Tokyo trains were wearing masks. And wearing them like it’s no big thang.

Yes there was a shortage in the beginning. I work in a medical practice. For the first month it was almost impossible to get supplies of masks or surgical gloves. We were instructed to use each mask for 2-3 days in a row and then seal it in a plastic bag for 10 days and re-use it. Felt icky and not terribly safe, but it was all we had.
I basically want to know what makes the vibrator special! 😳😇

I mean, okay, she WAS the first celeb I saw in a mask. (It was right before the mask-shaming began. People were going, “You need to save those for people who need it!” at everything from n95s to homemade cloth masks. It was bananas.)
I did think it was pretty bold of Paltrow to post on Instagram from an AIRPLANE, but I actually did buy an Airinum mask as a result of her post. If it’s good enough for LA smog…! (The brand everyone wears to work here in NorCal during wildfires — some type of cute respirator mask with cool prints — was completely sold out way, way early on.)
She had Covid in February/early March and still has antibodies? Highly unlikely. At least not to the amount that is protective.
