Jennifer Aniston sings on Ellen, jokes about tabloid persona

Jennifer Aniston was a guest on Ellen yesterday. She is promoting her new film, Love Happens, out this Friday. There’s a slim possibility the film could be delayed by a lawsuit filed by two screenwriters who claim that the story was stolen from them, but that probably won’t happen.

Aniston was in her element on Ellen, and I find her very friendly and likable when she has a good rapport with a host. She’s one of those people who really adjusts based on who she’s with and for that reason her interviews can be hit or miss. Ellen is a good friend of Aniston’s, though, and the two had some cute banter and spent some time catching up. At one point Aniston cracked a self-deprecating joke that made me laugh out loud.

On the tabloids’ fascination with her dating life
Ellen: Let’s talk about your dating life. Why are people so fascinated by it? I’m not asking who you’re dating. How come… they’re always talking about ‘you’re devastated’?

Aniston: I know, how do I get that end of the story every time?

Ellen: How come you’re not devastating people? They should be devastated.

Aniston: I know. How do I do that? I’ve got to talk to the people in those cubicles that are writing up those stories.

Ellen: Change it around. They’re getting the raw end of the deal, losing her. What’s wrong with people?

Aniston: They’ve just got to figure out something more interesting to talk about.

[From Jennifer Aniston’s appearance on Ellen, aired 9/16/09]

After the break they showed a clip from Love Happens, and were talking about what a great guy Aniston’s costar, Aaron Eckhart, is. Jen cracked a joke that was very subtle and funny. When Ellen said something about not wanting to work with people you don’t get along with, Aniston quipped “I’ve been very lucky though. I’ve really loved everybody that I’ve worked with, literally.” She then looked at the audience and made a funny gesture.

We were next treated to Aniston singing a capella, and she was pretty good. She explained that in her upcoming film, Goree Girls, she plays an inmate who helped start one of the first all-female country bands. The film is a dramatization of a true story from the 1940s. Ellen asked Aniston to sing and she protested at first, saying that Ellen’s people promised they wouldn’t make her sing, but then belted out a very competent version of “I’ve Got a Crush on You.” Did Aniston bring it? I thought she sort-of did. Ellen, who is set to be the fourth judge on American Idol, said she would put her through to the next round.

I think she sounded really good actually. Not like she could win a grammy but she sounded good. It was a nice little surprise!

  2. sassenach says:

This was a cute interview but be serious. She did NOT sound good and was very uneven until the end.

  3. Firestarter says:

Her hair looked great! There, I said it.

  4. Bill Hicks is God says:

    Oh God, it sings too?

  5. Zoe says:

sorry, that whole thing was totally pre-planned and to sit there all cutsie and pretend that it wasn’t and then suddenly pull a full mic out of your ass… give me a break.

‘oh oh, you promised me you weren’t going to do this to me’… too funny.

  6. z says:

It was a great interview. She did it pretty well for being put on the spot like that and she was a really good sport about it.

  7. Praise St. Angie! says:

“in her upcoming film, Goree Girls, she plays an inmate who helped start one of the first all-female country bands. The film is a dramatization of a true story from the 1940s.”

maybe this will shut up all her detractors who say she never does anything besides the rom-com.

  8. Anak says:

She is beautiful, funny and sings! OMG! The jealous people will go mad with this!

  9. binc says:

what is it about this woman? i just find her so annoying. she does look great though.

  10. Nev says:

She did not sound good at all. Jen was a little to quick to the mic to say it wasn’t planned.

  11. Beth says:

I have to laugh at the people saying she sounded great. She sounded like any other average person. I can sing that well. No she isn’t bad but I wouldn’t think “yes, she would be amazing in a musical.” This was obviously preplanned. Of all songs “I’ve Got A Crush On You” just pops into her mind?

  12. Eileen Yover says:

Seriously with this girl she damned if she does and damned if she doesn’t. I’m not a fan of hers by any means, but if she hadn’t sang all the negative people on here would be griping that she didn’t sing and it will be fake on the next movie she’s making. She sings and people gripe about that. Ease up on the chick!

  13. Kevin says:

I hope that movie does well. The story line sounds great. Finally something different for her. And for those that don’t know, acapella is THE hardest singing there is. You have to have damn good pitch to pull it off. As for her singing, meh there really wasn’t much to judge by. She really didn’t project much and there wasn’t much of a variance on the scale,so it’s hard to be a fair judge. Really, I was waiting for Kanye to jump on the stage and grab the mike from her.

  14. Sudini says:

Again, I don’t see anything to be annoyed about. I like Jen. I don’t think there’s anything offensive or annoying about her. I’d really love to know what it is about her people find annoying – is it the way the tabloids present her, or is it a quality that she actually presents on her own? Do people find her boring, therefore annoying? Or are they jealous on some level? Or are some just jumping on that sort of nebulous bandwagon?

  15. Sigh. says:

She’s not a singer who’s trying to act, she’s an actor who’s trying to sing, so in that respect I say – meh. Other actual singers will feel no real threat.

It’s not like she’ll be singing live in the movie or on a Broadway stage, so she’ll be meticulously produced within an inch of her life (like some of the ones that actually do call themselves singers are). No big deal.

So I’l take a seat on the “I don’t get the hate” bandwagon. I’ll sign “Respectfully Neutral Observer…”

  16. Fat Elvis says:

What is it about this woman that inspires so much vitriol? I’m not a fan by any means, but I certainly don’t hate her. You people act like she was Michael Vick’s accomplice or something equally as vile.

  17. MichelleMuko says:

    Jen is amazing.
And please haters, all interviews are planned. Jen is soo going to kill the goree girls!

  18. Zoe says:

The singing wasn’t what annoyed me personally. I like that she’s trying something new.

It’s all the ridiculous fakery. The singing was clearly pre-planned, so think about how much energy she put into being duplicitous with us.

She was being manipulative and fake and honest people don’t act that way, they’d be too embarrassed to pretend it wasn’t planned all along. Watch it again and tell me you could pull that off without feeling gross about it.

I know it’s completely normal in interviews like this for the host to pre-plan with the guest which anecdotes they’ll tell, and then act like they’re hearing it for the first time etc. but this was totally unnecessary. It’s disappointing.

  19. Teri says:

    BWAHAHAHAHAH

  20. DD says:

It was a cute interview and she looked good. I find that she always plays it safe and acts quite normal in interviews. Her big strike is because of that one famous union, its breakup and that third party involvement in dubious behaviour that painted some gloriously popular people in a somewhat negative light. Not surprisingly fans of the new golden union do not like the black mark it left on them and so try to make every yawn inducing action of hers into a big deal.

  21. sacra says:

Zoe, how do you know Jennifer knew for sure she was going to do it? Ellen’s the one who was hiding a mic and she handed it to Jennifer; JA didn’t pull the mic out herself. Plus, if JA was being manipulative, so was Ellen, who says, “I didn’t think you would really do it.”

  22. apsutter says:

I like jen….i think she’s cute and personable. This reminds me of when she was on SNL as Lurlene Mcdaniels the country singer….soo funny!

  23. Cinderella says:

She was really cute in this interview. A little off in the singing, but not bad for an impromptu performance.

She could probably pull it off in a studio.

  24. Praise St. Angie! says:

    to sacra…

yeah, I also noticed it was Ellen, not Aniston, who pulled out the mic…and I also didn’t think it was totally planned.

planned by Ellen and her production team, for sure, but Aniston’s reaction tells me that she didn’t expect it but what is ANY celeb going to do in a situation like that? if they flat out refuse, they come off as arrogant/bitchy/difficult, etc…

I guess some people will find whatever they can to say something negative about her.

  25. Kaiser says:

Christ. REMINDER: Do not post under multiple names. You will be banned.

  26. hmm says:

Ellen and Jen are friends and there’s no way that it was impromptu. Come on, you people know that everything is scripted on these shows, so stop the madness. She is comfortable with Ellen and it shows but the singing was blah at best.
On a side note, I hope the movie won’t be in competition with Anne Hathaway’s Judy Garland pic because the comparisons will not be kind to Aniston. I still don’t get all “hate” comments because I don’t see them. Just because you’re not enamored with a celeb does not mean that you hate them.

  27. the original kate says:

i thought jen was cute here but is it just me or did she seem a bit tipsy? i like ellen’s hair – can’t wait for her to be on AI -that might even get me to watch it again.

  28. Liz says:

Ellen is too nice too “ambush” Jen. IT was discussed beforehand imo, they are close friends. She mentioned she will be taking voice lessons for the role on another show.

  29. Agreed says:

Totally agree with “Zoe.” This was ridiculously planned and her overblown pretense of embarrassment is annoying. Her singing sucks (for a major motion picture about a singing sensation not for your grandma’s living room at Christmas) and this celebrity circle jerk was nauseating. This was perhaps a test to see audience reaction to her singing before production proceeds. Her singing is as good as Ellen’s dancing (yikes, someone make her stop.)

Aniston provokes much of the dislike. She plays the media game to the hilt, and then plays the victim when it doesn’t go her way. She’s constantly machinating and her defenders are the very ones she’s exploiting. She is cynically exploiting the “lonely hearts” because she’s had to scratch and claw to keep her career afloat and will do what it takes, but then complains. She’s not a great talent and yet keeps bombarding the box office with lead movies. Why? Because of the heat around her personal life. Otherwise, she’d be alongside her Friends cast mates enjoying the millions in semi-obscurity, churning out an occasional mediocre show.

She has comedic skills but not proportionate to the level her career has taken, and she has no emotional depth, and seemingly NO SINGING skill. It’s an insult to talented singers that she is propped up and all this phony praise handed to her by another phony, Ellen, as they are friends. The two of them are insipid. It also robs the audience of a potentially great movie for her to do it rather than a talented singer/actress. Whatever happened to real movie stars and real talent and quality entertainment. At least Aniston didn’t used to go the exploitation route until her recent unfortunate and cliche half naked photo shoots (when she absurdly claimed they got her drunk and published them.)

Every actor knows what they are getting into in terms of media attention. She says she didn’t “sign on” for this. Baloney. She’s always free to step back and retire on her piles of millions, or stay behind the camera, but she doesn’t. She did and continues to “sign on” for this.

When she slams people who read gossip, she is slamming her fans. That means all of you who rave about her and obviously identify with her lonely heart, common woman image. You are the consumers of her gossip and she resents you. Meanwhile, if no one paid her attention or took her picture she’d flip.

She’s got a good life and seems unappreciative and resentful, and delusional about her talent. Watching her interviews is uncomfortable with her staccato hostility. Also, planting comments on blogs raving about her is really pathetic (a trend the most insecure celebs seem to be doing.) At least she doesn’t use starving children as media props.

People are just sick of pr games and actors complaining about nonsense.

  30. z says:

@agreed what a story lmao tjeez so much time with somebody you don’t like lolololol

  31. Eileen Yover says:

Get ’em Kaiser! Who takes the time to do that anyway?? I need people to agree with me so bad, I’m going to take the time to fill out another name and comment again!! lol

  32. Cheyenne says:

@ z: She’s absolutely right, though; and too bad you don’t have intelligence enough to see it.

  33. Kevin says:

Agreed. your about as bad as Firestarter with the novellas. If you can’t sum it up in a short paragraph or two it’s probably not gonna get read. Now, let me sign with another name and agree with myself. Just kidding Kaiser. Don’t put me on double secret probation.

  34. Praise St. Angie! says:

easy there Cheyenne…just because someone doesn’t agree with another person’s take on something doesn’t mean they don’t have the intelligence to see the person’s point.

I have to agree with “z” in the sense that it’s strange someone would spend so much time and so many words on someone they don’t like.

(seems to happen a lot around here…)

  35. Ami says:

    Not too bad!!

  36. Munkey says:

    St. Angie: Well said.

Cheyenne, why do you despise this woman so much? All celebrities manipulate the media — yes, even your beloved JPs — so it’s not like she’s treading any new ground here. She’s just another movie star prattling on about dumb shit like all the others. Why take it so seriously?

  37. jann says:

agree w/ agree, lol, you can tell most of the positive comments are duplicate, it’s so funny, her fans are just like her, shallow and thinks the rest of the world is ignorant not to know, and when they get called out for it, they say, why do you care so much? well, why do you want people to like this talentless, fake, liar, bed hopping, bimbo?, there , i said it. i can’t stand the shallow, ignorance of her.

  38. Maritza says:

I’d love to see her do SNL again, she was so funny the last time she was there.

  39. Cheyenne says:

Munkey: I don’t hate her, hon — there’s not enough there to hate. But I will freely admit she bugs the hell out of me. I think she’s a vapid airhead with no interests in anything or anybody but herself, and her perpetual whining makes me want to slap the living shit out of her. Boo-hoo-hoo-I-was-shocked-the-world-was-shocked-everybody-stop-what-you’re-doing-and-feel-sorry-for-MEEEEEEE!! It’s a personality type I’m just not very sympathetic toward, know what I’m saying?

I realize a lot of people like her because they think she would be fun to hang out with for an afternoon. Well, that’s their lookout. But after you exhausted the weather and blow-drying techniques as topics of conversation, what else could you talk about?

  40. justathought says:

    the singing took guts!

  41. Laura says:

    @jann

How are you so sure Kaiser was talking about someone who was trying to heap praise on Aniston. It could be the other way around. To claim that the people who hate her wouldn’t do that either would be laughable to the point of insanity. Have you read some of the comments on all of the posts about her?

  42. Ursula says:

Cheyenne, if you call someone you don’t hate a ‘vampid airhead’, then I wonder what you call those you hate.

Jen is a very likable person. Not a frosty ice queen like some celebs. Besides, I doubt all the naysayers would hate on her if it were not for the uncool Bermuda triangle. She seems like a great girl.

I love the interview. I love most of her interviews.

  43. Shanny says:

I will explain the hate, it is imature B&A fans that can’t stand the fact B was married to J, they are so over the top and full of hate & ?? it just oozes out of them. They hate on anything J does. It is a weird phenomenon.

  44. Shanny says:

and Cheyenne honestly do you know J, how do you know she is not interested in anything but herself? That statement just shows how crazy in hate you are with J.
you should go check JJ and make sure no one is posting in your name….did you ever think there could be another cheyenne in the world? maybe from idono, cresent beach, citris bay, coral bells……..

  45. Shanny says:

and chey honestly do you know jen? how do you know she is not interested in anything but herself? that statement just shows how crazy in hate you are with jen.

  46. Shanny says:

you better go check jj and make sure no one is posting in your name…..did you ever happen to think there could possibly be another chey in the world, maybe from cresent beach or citris bay, or coral bells or costa bella……..

  47. Praise St. Angie! says:

“I don’t hate her, hon — there’s not enough there to hate.”

and that’s why you appear in almost every thread about her to make some snide remark? like the repeat about “the weather and blow-drying techniques”? you can claim all you want that you “don’t hate her” but your posts tell us all different.

feel free to comment all you want about her, as negative as you want to be, but don’t then try to claim that you don’t hate her – it’s clear how you feel.

  48. Shanny says:

It is funny the jennifer anniston haters seem to think Jen needs to move on allready, its been4?5 ys, I am thinking these haters are the ones that need to move on, Jen Brad and Ang have.

  49. stacy says:

I dont know why people are shocked about her singing. Do people realize that she has done broadway productions? Maybe not. I like her, i think shes great!

  50. Jen as a talk show host? says:

Oh no! Don’t add mediocre singer to mediocre actress abilities. She is personable, but no depth as an actress. She is a pro at being “the girl next door” and does it well, but imagine her in a period piece. Can’t. Actresses that can act and have dimension and depth: Renee, Kristen Stewart, Reese, Natalie Portman, Kiera, Michelle Pfeiffer,Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Kate Blanchet, Nicole Kidman (sometimes), even Anne Hathaway and yes, Angelina. Mediocre or overrated actresses: Cameron Diaz,Jessica Alba,Scarlett,Kate Hudson,Drew Barrymore, Julia Roberts, etc. Anyway, as far as Aniston, I think she’d be great as a talk show host. I can totally see her as “Kelly” as in “REGIS AND KELLY.” I think she’d be great. Just can’t watch her movies anymore. Too much of the same. Same gestures, same look. etc.

  51. Laura says:

@ Jen as a talk show host?:

You lost me at Kristen Stewart. Next you’re going to take a leaf out of Stephenie Meyer’s book and tell me that the Twilight film deserved an Oscar ::snort::

As far as I know, AJ has been in 2 period pieces in the past several years. Alexander and The Changeling. I’m not going to say anything about Alexander. That was a piece of crap. You’re reaching so much, I’m afraid you might pull something. Be careful.

  52. DEE84 says:

To all of the Jennifer Anniston Haters:
If you hate her so much and find her to be annoying, mediocre, nontalented, blah, blah, blah..then why come into a thread about her and comment? Are your lives so pathetic and useless that it makes you feel good to attack a complete total stranger? Hey here’s a thought, GET A DAMN LIFE!!!
