Duchess Kate borrowed jewelry from the Queen for Prince Philip’s funeral

The Funeral Of Prince Philip, Duke Of Edinburgh Is Held In Windsor

It sort of kills me that the Duchess of Cambridge wandered around maskless so often in the past thirteen months, because she really does look good in a mask which actually fits her. Previously, whenever she deigned to wear a mask, it was a kid’s mask and it often looked way too stretched. But the black mask she chose for Prince Philip’s funeral was really nice.

Yes, we’re talking about Kate’s funeral style, but let’s not pretend that no one noticed what she wore. She even chose a coatdress we had never seen before! She owns a million black coatdresses already, but she got something new for Philip’s funeral. Her coatdress is apparently Catherine Walker, and something bespoke. The look is… very Kate. From the buttons to the bow, it had a vaguely nautical vibe and that’s because Philip served in the Navy, so, you know, theme-dressing. Kate also borrowed some of the Queen’s jewelry for the funeral, and it had a special meaning:

While attending grandfather-in-law Prince Philip’s funeral at St. George’s Chapel on Saturday, the Duchess of Cambridge wore a necklace and a pair of earrings with special ties to Queen Elizabeth and her husband of 73 years.

For her necklace, Kate, 39, wore the Queen’s Four Row Japanese Pearl Choker, which she previously wore at the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s 70th wedding anniversary party in 2017. According to Her Majesty’s Jewel Vault, the Queen also previously loaned the choker to Princess Diana for a state visit to the Netherlands in 1982.

Kate also wore the Queen’s Bahrain Pearl Earrings, made from pearls gifted to the Queen on the event of her wedding to Philip in 1947. The earrings contain a large round diamond with a smaller circle diamond hanging below it. Three baguette diamonds hang from there, with three more small diamonds making way to the dangling pearl.

Kate has worn the sentimental earrings on several occasions in the past, including for the Remembrance Day service in 2016, just one year after the monarch opted to wear the jewels the previous year for the same event.

[From People]

Kate has borrowed that pair of earrings often in the past decade – perhaps they’re her favorite pair from the Royal Collection or the Queen’s private collection (I have no idea which). I think she likes how small they are, which… makes sense. She prefers smaller earrings to big statement earrings. As for the four-strand pearl necklace, at first I thought it was the Queen Mum’s four-strand pearl choker, which now belongs to Prince Charles, the same piece which Camilla frequently wears. But it’s not, the two necklaces just have a similar vibe.

I thought she looked very beautiful.

    • Laalaa says:

I agree. The hat was top notch for me!

    • msGumby says:

I agree – stunning! It’s OK to admire and celebrate both Meghan and Kate when they hit it out of the park like she did!!

      • Kalana says:

Celebrate Kate for her appearance. Her actions though ….

It struck me how shallow Kate’s gesture is. She wears their stuff.

      • BayTampaBay says:

It may be another coat dress with buttons but this dress totally hit the mark. Foe me, this was a personal best for Kate.

    • tempest prognosticator says:

I think she looked beautiful, too. Elegant.

      • BayTampaBay says:

Lady Louise Windsor also knocked it out of the ball park. I watch the BBC Work News coverage and Lady Louise looked absolutely stunning in her black outfit and high heels.

    • Elizabeth Phillips says:

      Agreed. And very elegant.

    • DuchessL says:

Kate looked great. The eye makeup was beautiful and the mask finally fit her. Everything matched and there was no drama. Yay (yet)

      • clomo says:

Her eye make-up is a million times better than how dark and thick she used to wear it, this softer look is so much better on just about everyone. Taylor Momsen used to pull off raccoon eyes back in her rebellious days but Kate has never looked good with harsh eyeliner.

      • Isabella says:

And no metal buttons! She looks gorgeous. I like the elegant necklace and the earrings too. The dress length is flattering.

      • The Recluse says:

The make up was done well this time.

    • Tanguerita says:

      agree, she looked remarkably well.

    • Madelaine says:

Both her botox injections and the non-compete Duchess Meghan exile are doing wonders on her skin.

    • minx says:

Yes, I thought everything meshed and she looked great. Still needs to stand up straighter, though.

    • Becks says:

She did look fantastic. The last photo in the car is my favorite, the hair, the hat and makeup were on all on point.

    • Amando says:

      I agree, she looked lovely.

    • Tessa says:

I think she overdid the jewelry.

    • Watson says:

I thought she looked great, but wish she had dialed the jewelry down a bit. My fave was Penny “the other woman”. She was subdued and elegant.

Cant believe I’m praising the other woman’s outfit in a royal funeral but I guess here we are…

    • (The OG) Jan90067 says:

There’s one pic of her inside the car, looking *directly* into the camera, and she really does look stunning in it. Her eyes looked gorgeous. Due is due.

      • Nic919 says:

I mean she and Chris Jackson coordinated the whole thing to get a good shot. So it worked in that sense, if you ignore how literally no one else at the funeral was photographed like that. At any other event it would have been fine, but it was tasteless to turn a funeral into a photo shoot.

      • Beach Dreams says:

Eh, because it was shot by Chris Jackson I’m willing to bet that a healthy amount of Photoshop was involved. He always edits the photos he takes for his wife’s client.

    • Snappyfish says:

She did. Simply stunning & the jewelry was a lovely tribute

    • Eleonor says:

      Honestly, she looks really elegant.

      • Tessa says:

The other ladies were more elegant and understated.

      • Eleonor says:

@Tessa: like it or not, she is married to the heir, I think she has to stand out.

      • Beach Dreams says:

@Eleonor: LOL no. *Camilla* is married to the heir and she dressed appropriately. The queen herself dressed appropriately. Kate’s husband is 2nd in line, not quite there *yet*. She dressed like this because she wanted to pull attention…even at a funeral of all moments. That says a lot about her, none of it good.

    • Em says:

      Same. She looked beautiful.

      • Carrie says:

Agree totally with Beach Dreams. Keen was like a Christmas tree. From photos I have seen neither Camilla, Beatrice or Eugenie were wearing any jewellery. That lingering look at the camera. My God they would have annihilated Meghan if she had worn a similar amount of jewellery and courted the camera as assiduously. The blatant racism and double standard continues. Very sad for Meghan.

    • Nikki* says:

Best I’ve ever seen her. Perfectly coordinated.

    • lurry says:

as much as it pains me to say, and kinda weird to say. she looks sickening

  2. Seraphina says:

I think she looked appropriate and looked great. The length suits her (the coat or dress). for once, she looked good and I agree she looks good in masks.
And if I were her, I would be in the royal vault weekly drooling like Smegal. Guess that’s why I am not in her shoes.

    • Mac says:

I would 100% be the Royal vault trying on all that bling.

    • Meghan says:

I’ve always known i can’t be Queen because I would be wearing all those tiaras and jewelry every dang day!!! Why keep it hidden?! Let the children wear it!

I mean we KNOW she is rich and has tons of tiaras and jewelry why not let us see it? IMO, just bringing it out occasionally screams “you’ll never be able to afford anything like this” and while that is correct, I’d like to see what else is in the vault.

    • MerlinsMom1018 says:

      @Seraphina
Same. All the while rubbing my hands together and hissing “my preciousssssssss”
I would be wearing ALL I could carry to the grocery store, that’s how danged shallow I am 👸👸👸🙂

    • Nikki* says:

I’d be in the Royal Vauly every single day!!

  3. Noki says:

She looked very nice for the occassion, however she looks absolutely tiny. Black already is a slimming colour and pictures add a few pounds to people,i cant imagine how she really is in the flesh.

    • Becks1 says:

That stood out to me too.

    • Plums says:

This is the first time I’m seeing full body pictures of her in a long time, and I think you’re right. The coat is great and I think she looks lovely and is styled very elegantly, and she’s always been naturally very slim, but some of these shots, it doesn’t look right. That last shot, she looks super skinny. It reminded me of that shot of her a couple years ago where she was wearing a low cut summer dress and her ribs were showing. I hope she’s well.

    • Featherduck says:

When I see how thin kate is, I am aghast. But it might be my murican eyes, used to seeing 70% of the population, myself included, that’s overweight or obese.

      • SpankyB says:

I think you nailed it. Not just Americans but other countries also are getting heavier and that’s what we’re getting used to seeing. Even thin teenagers have a belly, I’m sure from all the processed foods eaten these days.

I think Kate looks fine, weight-wise. She’s small boned, athletic, and long waisted. Long waists always look smaller than they are, just like long legs look skinnier than short legs.

      • Jaded says:

Well I saw her in person a few years back when they visited Victoria on Vancouver Island and she is shockingly thin, so I don’t think it’s your ‘Murican eyes at all.

      • Nic919 says:

No let’s stop pretending that Kate is just naturally that way. She did not look that thin when she was in her early 20s and she was very fit at the time.

      • Tessa says:

Kate looked healthier at University and was never “overweight.”

      • Beach Dreams says:

It’s not just you. Kate was never a naturally skinny person; her body type was athletic fit. I’d go even farther than Nic919 and say that she kept her natural fitness well into her mid-20s. It was only around the engagement that she really started to change into what we see today.

    • Liz version 700 says:

I thought exactly those two things Nokia’s. She looked lovely, minus the giant bow her outfit was perfect. But my God she looks incredibly tiny. I do hope she is OK. She is not someone I think I would like, but I hope she is not seriously unwell especially for the sake of her children

    • Betsy says:

She is disappearing. She may be a wretched human, but I still feel for her.

    • PamelaJudy says:

Yes I noticed the same thing.

    • swirlmamad says:

Yes…. it’s really striking in the shot of her full torso.

    • gilda says:

Right? I felt ill realising her shoulders are the widest part of her body. Her lower half looks impossibly small (especially for someone who carried children! the hunger she must feel…), and brought some toxic intrusive thoughts to mind. I hope she can find a healthy path, regardless of how foul and corrupted she is personally. Her body is her one true home and it does not deserve the abuse she has bestowed upon it.

  4. Over it says:

Sigh, buttons and bows. Also I think the necklace is beautiful but I hate it with this dress. It needs a dress that lets it sit on the neck without being covered in a bow the size of Christmas.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Came here to essentially say the same.

    • MaryContrary says:

Agree. It’s competing with the bow.

    • Liz version 700 says:

The bow stood out as the one head scratching moment in this outfit. It was so not part of the vibe and I swear it was bigger than her head.

    • Cait says:

Completely agree – wrong neckline for this type of necklace + yes compete with bow as too much happening in the top half.

I am no Philip fan but feel like Kate is too dressed up – like for her this was about the fashion rather than a funeral.

Reminds me of Remembrance Day hair twirling etc – is her mind focused on why they are there or is she thinking about her buttons + tassles.

  5. Lilwah says:

Bit of a Disney villainess vibe to me.

    • Edna says:

I was thinking the same thing.

    • kyliegirl says:

That’s it! Compared to the other women I thought Kate looked too done. Their jewels were much more understated. The necklace while beautiful, was too much and made her look like the evil step mother. Kate just doesn’t know how to wear jewelry. Her dressing also lends to the fact she has no personality. She is playing a role. Quite sad actually. The way you dress reveals your personality. The other women looked appropriate while also keeping true to their personal style and personality. This is part of the reason Will and Kate cannot connect with people. In order to really connect you have to reveal a little of yourself. They are just playing dress up.

      • Lightpurple says:

I thought the necklace was too much, a bit inappropriate, for a funeral. Otherwise, she looked lovely.

      • Myra says:

I thought the jewelry was too much. Had it been another duchess we know what the media would have said about the necklace and makeup for such a sombre occasion. It would have been labelled “too hollywood”.

      • Tessa says:

        She overdid the bling.

    • Yup, Me says:

She reminds me of Miss Vera from Them.

    • BeanieBean says:

It seems very Diana-like to me, the pearls, the earrings, the hat, the Catherine Walker coat dress (except Kate’s is longer).

  6. mariahlee says:

    She looks well-rested.

  7. Ang says:

She looked pretty. But the elaborate hairdo seemed inappropriate. ‘Twas a funeral not a wedding.

    • AnneSurely says:

And the jewelry is vulgar. But it probably was intended to draw attention away from the awkward neckline of the coat. Or she had the coat made so that she needed to wear an inappropriately flashy piece of jewelry at a funeral.

      • Mac says:

Queen Victoria started the tradition of wearing pearls for mourning. HM was also wearing pearls.

      • Emily says:

Kate last wore this necklace publicly at the 70th anniversary party for TQ and PP. I thought it was touching, elegant, and appropriate.

      • Nic919 says:

No other woman wore jewelry on display yesterday like Kate did. The Queen always wears pearls but they were under her coat. She didn’t treat this as a fashion show and neither did the other women. I also think the Queen doesn’t care about what jewelry Kate is wearing on the day of her husband’s funeral. She lost her life partner and has more important things to think about than what borrowed necklace her grand daughter in law decided to wear that day. The media pretending that it matters is just more puffery.

      • Mac says:

HM wore the Richmond brooch, which is a huge. Camilla, Sophie and Louise all wore diamond brooches and both and Anne and Sophia wore large pearl earrings.

      • Amy Too says:

Emily, it sounds like she chose the jewelry because she had worn those pieces for other special Philip moments, but that made me wonder if she has some kind of Kate Look Book that has a picture of every single outfit she’s ever worn, complete with list of accessories and the date/occasion, and if that book has some huge index at the back where she can look up and cross reference certain things. In this case she’d have to cross reference “In Attendance: Prince Philip,” “Occassion: Honoring or Celebrating Prince Philip/The Queen,” “Accessories: Special Occassion Royal Collection Jewelry/Jewels gifted to or made from stones gifted to TQ in celebration of a Prince Philip event.” Seriously, how do they all remember exactly when they last wore whatever significant piece of jewelry so that they can make sure that they always wear that piece for similar occasions that honor or celebrate the same person/event/thing, and make sure they never wear whatever jewelry or hat or coat for any other type of occasion?

      • AnneSurely says:

I wear pearl studs to funerals. Not my gram’s triple strand with large brooch clasp that is intended to be worn to a black tie event. She’s so crass.

    • Undine Spragg's vanity says:

Given the level of protocol & planning that went into the funeral, I’m willing to bet the jewellery was signed off by the Queen and given to Kate by Angela Kelly. I thought the pearl necklace on its own was fine. Pearls are considered the tears of the ocean and therefore a fitting choice for funerals. The earrings are what pushed the look into over the top territory. It was was too much bling for a sombre occasion. She ought to have gone with simple pearl studs.

  8. Over it says:

Also isn’t carrying your gloves with your purse not a Megs thing?

  9. Harper says:

Too much bling for a somber funeral. It was not the time or place to draw attention by wearing such an obvious piece; all the other attendees were much more understated. But that’s Kate for you. Rose would have known not to deck herself out like that.

    • Nic919 says:

Her whole theme was drawing attention. If you check the Getty pictures list of all the funeral pictures, she is the only one staring directly at the photographers. And there are several shots of “why is Kate not near anyone and just looking at the camera”. There are hundreds of pictures of the procession and of other royals and in laws, but none are like hers.

      • equality says:

What? I thought Meghan was the one who looked at cameras all the time.

      • Nic919 says:

Kate was known to do that well before Meghan was in the picture but it was so obvious here. No one else in the family is seen posing for the camera like she did yesterday.

      • windyriver says:

I’m surprised to see so many pictures of her, because the live feed didn’t emphasize her at all. I did notice that in the long shots of the quire from the back of the pews, her face was hidden behind one of the sconces, and it crossed my mind she wouldn’t like that…

      • AnneSurely says:

        Ugh, she’s so crass.

    • Donna B. says:

      😆

  10. Amy Bee says:

All those black coats she worn over the years and she still went out bought a new one.

  11. YaGotMe says:

Another site identified the dress as a repeat, now I have to go look. I thought she was impeccably put together … But so were they all. Eyes of the world and all …

  12. Sofia says:

I thought she looked fine. Wasn’t a fan of the bow at the front and thought a simple v-neck coat would have looked better.

  13. sunny says:

Buttons and bows is a lot. Also the necklace on top of that busy coat is too much. Loved the fascinator and the hair though.

  14. Becks1 says:

I thought she looked lovely overall but agree with others that it felt a little too fussy right fancy for a funeral- IDK. The mask did fit though!

I kind of liked the bow but think the bow with the big pearl choker with the buttons with the netting on the hat was a little too much.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

And the earrings, especially for a funeral and for daytime. Simple buttons might have been more suitable.

  15. Nic919 says:

There was a photo of Kate and William leaving KP to head to Windsor Castle prior to the service and she wasn’t wearing that outfit because there was much more cleavage showing and it looked like an older McQueen outfit. But she must have changed into this. She was wearing the same necklace with the other outfit though so she must have realized she could not wear an outfit cut that low for a funeral.

Even with this outfit, it was still odd that she was showing off a choker at a funeral. None of the other women were that obvious with displaying jewelry at a funeral.

Also, Kate was posing like a madwoman when outside. There are several photos of her staring at the photographer, especially in the car, and lo and behold Chris Jackson, husband to her stylist, got the direct shot. No one else at that funeral had shots like this. They are all action shots for everyone else and none of them are looking directly at the camera.

    • Becks1 says:

Oh yeah that Chris Jackson picture was so obvious.

    • Carabella says:

Really? I did wonder why she was looking out of the window instead of staring straight ahead.

      • Nic919 says:

There are no pictures of anyone else getting out of the car in a closeup as there was of Kate. It’s pretty obvious so many shots were set up. The Getty picture gallery makes it even more obvious because if there are photos of Beatrice or Eugenie or the others, they are either walking out of the church or moving in some way. And none of them are staring straight at the camera.

      • Carabella says:

@Nic919 That is so low, but then we did have the infamous hair twirling and batting eyes at cameras at the solemn Remembrance Sunday event. Wonder what she’s hoping to gain.

    • anotherlily says:

She has a knee-length black dress under the coat. Pictures of her stepping out of the car show the dress and coat lining. For the photo of her in the car she has slipped the coat off her shoulders so the photographer gets a good shot of the necklace. She really is this shallow.

She wore the dress to the Festival of Remembrance in 2018.

There is a back view of her outside the church where her shoulder blades are evident. This is through a lined coat and a dress. She’s emaciated.

    • BeanieBean says:

This was just the dress under her coat; it has an asymmetrical neckline.

    • JustBitchy says:

@nic919 thanks so much for this! I can’t believe she contemplated wearing that asymmetric dress. Could the coat dress with the buttons and bows be over it? The jewelry was for evening wear and Rose would have rocked.

  16. WithTheAmerican says:

Her under eye bags are gone. Also, her mask is half the size of everyone else’s. And yet bigger than she usually wears.

She looks good, if not a wee try hardee.

    • Originals Jenns says:

I thought she looked lovely in the photos but yes – her face has absolutely been photoshopped. Even her neck lines look softer.

  17. Lauren says:

I think she dressed appropriately. The choice of the necklace was a bit meh, it didn’t pair well with the neckline of the dress coat. I was more surprised that they all finally decided to wear a mask. The rf has been consistently ignoring mask wearing protocols during the whole pandemic. They finally chose to wear them while meeting in public. Who would have thought?

    • Chrissy says:

Yes, but they’re only wearing masks when around their own family members and when they know that millions will be watching. Everything is PR with these people.

    • BeanieBean says:

And yet there are plenty of photos of them all that day, maskless. I think it’s afterwards, & they’re walking up to the castle?

  18. FancyPants says:

Kate looks very appropriate and I’m glad I was wrong about my “McQueen Soldier” cosplay predictions. And I’m sorry, but every piece of jewelry the Queen designed herself is the worst- that clasp looks like a throat v@gina.

  19. Digital Unicorn says:

This is one of those rare occasions she looked good and the look was well put together for a change. I think we’re going to be seeing her wear a lot more of TQs bling – William sure isn’t going to buy her anything new.

    • Ainsley7 says:

To be fair, it’s for the best if she never gets anything new. She has terrible taste in jewelry.

  20. Lemons says:

I’m honestly a bit surprised that they chose this event between family to wear masks, but I suppose they want to visually reflect that Philip was lost during the pandemic of our time as well. These pictures will help represent this moment in time.

  21. Kitty says:

I thought de pieces of jewellery where beautiful but not to a funeral service, smaller earrings would have been enough, especially against de over sized bow, she loves de camera though !!!!

  22. Hell Nah! says:

I thought she looked beautiful. Well rested, elegantly dressed, hair and netting done to perfection and even though I don’t think the necklace was the best choice for the bow neckline, it still looked good. Even her mask had a touch of symmetrical panache to it. Well done Kate!

As for the posing and the ‘look at meee’ aspect of the earrings and the necklace…well…at this point, is anyone really surprised by it? She is who she is.

    • Tessa says:

The Funeral was about paying tribute to Philip not what Kate wears, her clothes, jewels and hair. She was looking at the cameras.

    • equality says:

But who, if they were close to the deceased, looks well-rested and elegant at a funeral?

      • Nic919 says:

That is a very good point. And you can see in many of the others there the emotional toll the funeral took on them.

  23. Lizzie says:

What a showboat. Imagine showing up in bling and bows and an elaborate hairdo at the funeral of Prince Philip. The other ladies managed to get it right, Keen will never fit in.

  24. Barcelona says:

She looks great, but she also looks like she’s aware that she looks good. This was a somber situation and she appears more focused on her appearance than on the situation itself.

  25. Julia K says:

I have seen that dress in photos before so was a rewear I think. She has lost way too much weight! Worrisome. Hope she is not ill.

    • Doulton says:

I wondered if she is trying to weigh less than a certain British Rose, who is alarmingly skeletal.

  26. Al says:

I don’t understand the jewelry situation with her. Why doesn’t she have more of her own jewelry? Why doesn’t he buy any for her? Look at everything that Charles gave Diana and then Camilla. They both had/have extensive jewelry collections. And why doesn’t she wear more pieces from the Royal collection or the Queen’s personal vault? Wouldn’t someone in the position they keep trying to sell (TFFQ) wear more significant jewels?

    • Chrissy says:

Cannot is a woman her bought herself her own eternity ring after her first child was born. Willnot is either cheap AF and/or doesn’t think she is worth the attention or expense. I think it’s both.

    • equality says:

I wonder how much in the “vault” is problematic, like the things from the Saudis or from colonized countries.

  27. Midge says:

She looked great but let’s be clear, that necklace was chosen so that everyone would talk about how Diana wore it. William is Diana’s son, too you guys!!

PS I don’t think William enjoys all this attention on peacemaker Kate. He would much rather the focus be on him and his dutiful kingliness

  28. Cessily says:

Truthfully if it had not all been pointed out I would not have noticed the jewelry or buttons on the coat.. the bow I noticed. I think she looks very appropriate for the funeral. I think the entire guest list seemed to dress and behave to honor the Queen and PP.
I don’t know about how others feel or think but especially after yesterday and the commentary, articles and Twitter it is exhausting.. I started reading and following after the interview so I’m very late to the game. I can’t imagine being able to withstand all that if it was about me.
My prayer is for the tabloid media to realize that and leave them alone..

  29. Islandgirl says:

I think that Catherine looked absolutely lovely.

  30. RoyalBlue says:

like many other posters have said, the necklace was too much for the occasion. terribly mismatched with the outfit and unsuitable for a funeral. This is not about you Waity. simple and understated would have come across much better.

  31. Dee says:

Kate was over accessorized and staring into the cameras. The necklace was Diana cosplay.

  32. Phoenix says:

I think she was kitsch- Hat with a net, heavy makeup, diamond earrings, big pearl choker, a navy ribbon. Is she having shoulder pads on that coat? Bcz she doesn’t need them…
It was the other women that were looking elegant and discreet, Kate was all over the place

  33. mlouise says:

super nice coat and overall outfit- wrong occasion to wear it. it is too sophisticated (which she should go for more often as she looks good styled like this) fir a funeral which called for not showy elegance. The hat is pretty definitely showy not for a funeral.

Great looks bad judgment or absence of restrain her desire to show off.

  34. Beach Dreams says:

All of the other women were suitably muted and appropriate in their fashion…and then here comes Kate, with flashy jewelry, a needlessly elaborate hairstyle and hat, excessive makeup, and another fussy coat. I’d have thought she’d keep her constant need to be the center of attention at family events tamped down, but nope, even a funeral doesn’t slow her down. The blatant posing in the car was particularly gross.

    • Rosa says:

I agree with you totally 💯

    • Nic919 says:

      Exactly so.

    • LeaTheFrench says:

I agree, that look was very strong for her but she should have toned down the jewelry. It’s a bit much for a funeral (though there may be a cultural component here – in France you’d show up with more muted accessories – royalty or not.)

    • AnneSurely says:

Thissss. Yikes, she’s a mess. I hope she’s embarrassed that Philip’s mistress even looked more tasteful than she did. Imagine being outdone by a sidepiece.

  35. Christine says:

Kate looked extra pretty…because she knew Harry will be around. I’m sorry, but I always thought Kate was always extra happy, extra pretty, extra elated when Harry was around. I suppose because Will is always too serious.

    • Alexandria says:

Omg hahaha…ok but seriously I’ve always thought she looks lovely even now. It’s just her shenanigans and immaturity are just awful. And I will not forget her role in crying gate and PR for a dead woman. That’s sick.

  36. terra says:

Oh, wow. There’s been a rather obvious invasion in this comment section hasn’t there? I’d be keen to find out where they’ve come from.

    Hint, hint, wink, wink.

    • Originals Jenns says:

Yes! I feel like Kate has been completely exposed and now most of the comments focus on how lovely and well rested she looks. It does make those of us who criticize her look a little looney BUT when you take into context her repeated lies and bad PR for Meghan, and the fact that she used a murder victims memoria as a PR stunt, I think it makes a little more sense when people refuse to give her an inch. She’s a person who’s all out for herself, and that includes being nice to William so she can continue her life the way she wants.

      • Nic919 says:

I took the well rested comments to mean her botox was touched up. Which is was

      • Islandgirl says:

I feel that I can think that Kate looked lovely and still feel that she was horrible to Meghan and totally involved in orchestrating the smear campaign which set up a particulat narrative…
Two different things…one refers to how she looked on a particular day and the other refers to the type of person I perceive her to be.

    • bamaborn says:

Yep, you knew it would only be a matter of time. First pics I saw of Kate reminded me of Olive Oyl with a bit of Granny Goodnall thrown in. Too thin, with bad posture.

    • Nanea says:

Some comments are even wandering off into *blatantly obvious* territory, once people show up and start calling the Keen one Catherine. 🙄

    • Sokrates says:

@ohpioneer, true donald, different opinons are bad. You are with me or my enemy. Dictatorship hello wink wink hint hint land of the free

      • Saucy&Sassy says:

Sokrates, You do know that this is a Sussex support cite, yes?

When I saw pictures yesterday–and I only looked once because I will admit that Philip’s funeral was of no interest to me. Here’s my immediate thought when I saw Kate: She looked stylish, the hat was inappropriate, didn’t know what to think about the jewelry, and said to myself, “why does she insist on looking YEARS older than what she is?” Then I thought about Diana, and I have to tell you that Diana never dressed to look way older. Part of it was her hair–it was short and always well styled.

Someone please explain to me why she’s determined to look like a matronly older woman?

    • Alexandria says:

@Terra, for me I don’t think so. She’s always been an awful person but superficially a lot of us comment on her looks and dressing because that’s all she offers. I will not sit beside her, but I can say she looks nice at x occasion. Most of the time it’s a fail though.

    • Maria says:

A suspicious number of “Catherine looks so lovely and appropriate” comments…Gary??? Carole??? Bueller??

  37. Sure says:

I got Joan Collins as Alexis Carrington vibes from Kate’s look – something you might see a Hollywood actress wearing in a funeral scene. It just looked OTT ( necklace, earrings, heavy make-up ) compared to the minimalist trend amongst the other women.

    • Nic919 says:

I agree. Kate was playing the part of the glamorous young widow for the cameras despite the fact the funeral was for her grandfather in law.

      • Tessa says:

It looked like a throwback outfit to a thirties film featuring a young widow. She should have toned it down. Less is better.

    • AnneSurely says:

Joan Collins hamming it up was the first thing I thought of. Kate is such a vulgar weirdo.

    • FicklePickle says:

And the hairstyle, let’s not forget that. Of all the times she could choose to do the elaborate coiffure, it’s when having her hair completely down and just ‘undone’ would be more appropriate.

Her styling choices are like the BRF’s PR choices. Always not right, frequently in ways nobody even knew were possible.

  38. Ohpioneer says:

I thought her look was lovely and appropriate to the occasion. I get zero nautical vibes from this. And have no criticism to make of how she looked. 🙅‍♀️

  39. Sunnee says:

Her eyes look very light gray in the funeral photos. Forgive me for asking, but aren’t they hazel brown?

    • Nic919 says:

I think they are more green than hazel brown. In any case, the Chris Jackson photo has been altered in a few ways so I wouldn’t take the colour scheme as an actual reflection of everything that day.

  40. Yeahwhat says:

The pearls were too showy but Kate looked nice. I liked Eugenia’s coat and Beatrice’s hair looked gorgeous. Thought that the high heels the majority wore except for lady Louise were ridiculous. Nothing wrong with a good block heel but then that’s me, comfort over heels of torture any day.

    • TeamMeg says:

“And also” Penny Knatchbull had the perfect heel. Silly stilettos aside, I thought Kate looked stunning. She is the future Princess Consort after all (or whatever her title will be—Queen Consort?—if the monarchy is still standing when it’s William’s turn to inherit the throne.) Kate’s veiled fascinator looks very much like a black version of the blue hat Meghan is wearing in one of the other stories Kaiser posted today, right?

      • Jais says:

Yep, Kaiser posted the hat Meghan wore with netting in the other post about the wreath. I’d say SWF but it seems more like funeral black netting theme hat. But it could also be a tiny little Meghan inspired.

    • AnneSurely says:

I used to be a big high heels at work girl until I saw footage of Kate and then Melania running around in high heels and I realized how tacky they look. I’m already tall and there’s no need for me to top 6 feet. And 2 inch heels look really chic, as opposed to 4″+

  41. Objective says:

Kate looked beautiful, elegant and refined. Totally appropriate.

    • Tessa says:

It was not all about Kate. The other women looked good and were more understated which was more appropriate.

    • Lizzie says:

Buttons, bows and bling, everyday is a photo op for Kate. Quite disrespectful.

    • Truthiness says:

      Carole – is that you?

    • WithTheAmerican says:

Sad, I thought the middletons had made enough money to buy less obvious “support.”

    • Haylie says:

She never put a foot wrong. Except for the foot she out in Meghan’s neck out of sheer spite.

    • Thirtynine says:

Compared to the Queen, Penny, Bea and Eugenie, I don’t think so. Kate’s look is not an upper class version of what’s appropriate for this particular upper class occasion. It’s easy to see the difference – from jewellery type and placement, stockings, day wear style coats, hair and make-up- between Kate and the other women. There’s a sort of class code to dress. It doesn’t necessarily mean Kate looks bad- just that she doesn’t look right.

  42. MJM says:

Kate’s funeral look is far too matronly. Her updo is fussy, makeup overdone. Pearls and veil scream old lady to me. Penny Knatchbull nailed her funeral look as did the Queen.

    • Nic919 says:

Penny looked beautiful. It was simple and elegant and not ostentatious. In a few photos you could tell the day was emotional for her.

      • AnneSurely says:

You know you’ve done bad when the mistress looks more tasteful than you. I could swear that Kate was raised by wolves.

    • (The OG) Jan90067 says:

Penny looked like she was the widow.

I didn’t care for the Wilma Flintstone sized pearls. She, like the Queen, had a huge diamond broach, and oversized pearl earrings to match the necklace.

Aren’t pearls supposed to be mourning jewelry?

  43. Wilma says:

Some hardcore smizing going on here.

  44. Donilon says:

The entire look screams….LOOK AT ME! The jewelry, while beautiful, didn’t go with the bow of on the dress. The thing about Kate is that everything she does is planned out. There is no doubt that she placed herself near Harry. Remember she refused to speak or acknowledge Harry/Meghan on his last official Royal Engagement. Now she’s a peace maker??

  45. Shawna says:

From far away, I thought Kate really nailed it. Looking at the details closer, each piece was just a little too designed/complicated to go together and make a cohesive whole. It’s just too much and everything is competing. I really like each piece individually, though.

  46. aquarius64 says:

Kate basically wore a statement necklace, the statement being “I have access to the queen’s jewels”. I saw no tribute to Philip here no matter what the press tries to sell.

    • Tessa says:

It also fed into the stories that William was upset about Meghan wearing Diana’s jewels.

  47. Gina says:

The fact that she wore statement necklace that were worn by Diana was not to my liking. I felt it wasn’t appropriate for this event – it made me uncomfortable. Though it’s not surprising at all – Kate has a subtlety and emotional intelligence of a log she once “designed”.

  48. Maria says:

This is a good look but the necklace is overkill and not appropriate.
More subdued pearls would have been better. The earrings would have been enough for a tribute to Philip as they were an actual 1947 wedding gift for the Queen and Philip. There was no need to wear this necklace with them which only serves to remind us of another of *Kate’s* media appearances.

  49. TheOriginalMia says:

The necklace was too much, but that’s Kate. She has to call attention to herself. The coat’s bow would have been enough, but that’s not Kate. She can’t accessorize to save her life. She is so tiny. Reminds me of her weight loss coming into the wedding.

  50. FancyHat says:

Wow there truly has been an in an invasion of pro-Cambridges commenters. Can’t ya’ll give the rest of us one space to ourselves?

  51. nicegirl says:

Top CEO looks pretty. I think the earrings would have been just enough, the necklace is a bit too much for funeral attire.

  52. bitsycs says:

The combo of the bow and that necklace is awful. The rest is seriously great, but she should have done something different with that neckline if she was wearing that necklace.

  53. Prairiegirl says:

In light of all the discussion on this post about funeral-appropriate jewelry, here’s an interesting and informative post at The Court Jeweller that looks at Royal mourning jewelry: http://www.thecourtjeweller.com/2021/04/the-queens-royal-mourning-jewels.html

    • equality says:

The article says mourning jewelry isn’t “meant to grab the spotlight or catch the eye” so I think this necklace was a fail.

      • Jais says:

Thanks for this! Finally went and looked at the article and there were some interesting pics of the queen in mourning attire over the years. I see some similarity in Kate’s outfit and what the queen wore to the St. James public mourning for Diana in 1997. There’s something about the collar bow thing of both dresses and the queen is wearing a triple strand of pearls. No netting though.

    • MerlinsMom1018 says:

      @Prairiegirl:
      Very interesting article, thanks!
I think my favorite was Lady Louise’s brooch. Such a tribute to her shared love of carriage driving with PP

  54. Nick says:

Agree with everyone who said she looked beautiful.

  55. Kkat says:

Kate did look good, she really stood out, poor tacky choice on her part. The fashion for a funeral should be understated not eye catching.
I love the necklace, but again too flashy for a funeral.
She is really great at theme cosplay dressing, nice call out to PP’s naval service with the nautical styling of her coat. New for the funeral?
She was wearing a different outfit showing cleavage on the way to Windsor, when did she change? (And why)

Excellent widow cosplaying in her posing for her stylist’s husband, he’s good at photoshop at least.

I’d like to say Hi to all the Cambridge plants on our comment sections, you can notice their stand out posts by the use of the name Catharine ~waves at them (can bots wave back?)

    • BeanieBean says:

That wasn’t a different outfit, it was just the dress she wore under her coat. Where the coat was in the car, I have no idea.

  56. paddingtonjr says:

I always get irrationally angry with Kate when I see her theme-dressing. She has a seemingly bottomless clothing budget and at least several hours a day to shop, yet she can’t get it together. The black color and fit of the dress look good on her, but bows AND buttons? Choose 1! And the jewelry, though nice, is too ostenatious for a somber occasion; again, choose 1, either the necklace OR the earrings, not both. A slightly higher neck on the dress with the buttons (not that bow!) and her hair in a less fussy style would have looked great. I swear I want to hire a stylist for her.

    • AnneSurely says:

I do too. Just dress like a person, for god’s sake. Eugenie and Beatrice are just wearing lovely, nondescript black coats with heels. And they’re not tailored to within an inch of their lives or wearing evening jewelry to a day event or posing for pictures. Could she get any tackier?

      • Julia K says:

Bingo! I have not heard that expression since first said by MIL yrs ago. Never wear evening jewelry to a daytime event. You brought back memories. Thank you.

      • paddingtonjr says:

My mother would also say “no diamonds before 5pm.” Kate has worn the earrings to Rembrance Day, as has TQ, so I could see her wearing the earrings to show her closeness with TQ. But I think a nice pair of pearl studs, maybe with a small diamond accent, would have looked much more appropriate. A looser hairstyle would have softened the earrings as well. The necklace is just all kinds of wrong for a daytime funereal.

    • Alexandria says:

She has a missing sensitivity chip. I still recall her hot pink dress for the 911 memorial.

  57. Truthiness says:

I think Camilla won the “best royal consort” of the day with the possible exception of Timothy Laurence. Charles could not accept a scene stealing wife and Camilla wore a dress and shoes so mediocre that no one would discuss it. Plus a broach denoting an assignment she took over from Phillip. I did love her mask and hat. I am not a fan of hers but I have to respect her game.

    • Tessa says:

I think the best consort was Sophie.

      • Truthiness says:

Sophie out-shone her husband, at her FIL’s funeral. I agree she looked great and acted appropriately, I just think Camilla had a much more difficult role with a lot more to lose. She’s got game, I will give her that.

    • Original penguin says:

Camilla almost always wears a four strand Pearl choker- on this day she chose not to. Which makes you realise how out of place Kate’s was. The Queen always wears a double strand of pearls- this time you could barely see them as tucked into the coat. Bling isn’t for solemn funerals as pretty as the choker is

  58. Faye G says:

I think the reason Kate looks good here is her mouth is covered, so you can’t see her permanently pursed-lips sour face. The less we see of that the better.

    • Yes, I agree with you. Due to her mask, her deep smile lines can’t be seen here. Also the wrinkles around her mouth can’t be seen. All these wrinkle lines are what make her look very old and haggard. Thanks to the mask.

  59. JustMe says:

IMO the necklace has a vibe more suitable for an evening event or gala occasion. Too much bling for a funeral. Wearing the so-called meaningful jewelry as a tribute to honor the marriage of Elizabeth and Philip seems an inappropriate choice for a funeral. It would still have been an odd choice if Anne had chosen to wear it. If done by the Queen re her marriage it would have been meaningful but she knows how to wear jewelry without the jewelry wearing her,

  60. Rnot says:

The pearl choker didn’t work but the rest was a lovely look. The thing that stood out the most was how alarmingly underweight she is. She’s always been slim but this is beyond that. Something is seriously wrong with her health.

    • BeanieBean says:

Yeah, I remember the same thing with Diana back in the day. How can someone look so skinny while wearing a coat?

  61. Well Wisher says:

There used to be a student’s companion book in primary school , relic from the British Empire. There were all kinds of information, including how one must conduct oneself. One must not comment about other people’s attire as such, it in impolite.
I laughed when I read it in my mother’s copy of the book. Looking back it appros for this situation.
Thank you for bringing attention to this fact as it reflects the times we live in.

Other family members were suitably attired sans jewellery since it was a somber occasion: assuming the royal women could have had access to the jewellery and chose not to.
    That says it all.

  62. Katebush says:

I think she looked amazing, makeup and hair looked tops and I’m a sucker for a netted fascinator BUT alarmingly skinny in the full length photo … the coat was kind of hanging on her.
Also I agree about the high heels most of the young uns wore why do they all wear stilettos they are so uncomfortable I would have hated to have walked up that hill in those!

  63. Margaret says:

Kate in my opion, dressed to impress harry. I will leave it at that.

    • Donna B. says:

She did. There is a picture of them on twitter, where they are in the church, & kate is standing next to Harry, leaning into him. While William is standing on the other side of Harry. The poster of the retweet, said kate looked like she was stalking Harry. Real creepy the poster said.

  64. Carolind says:

OK. Tacky to comment about people’s appearances at funerals but…Kate was a bit over the top. It was all too much. Some of it is attention seeking but some could be because she is not secure in the role and trying too hard. Also the reminder of Diana was inappropriate. If Diana was alive she would not have even been at that Covid restricted funeral.

Eugenie’s hair could have been under a bit more control. Otherwise they were all great. Penelope was the epitome of good taste.

I would have loved to have seen Lady Sarah and Princess Alexandra.

    But…it was a funeral.

  65. Monica says:

When all one can say about our little mountain goat is that she looks good, she’s doing the whole FFKC thing wrong.

  66. boyd says:

why? borrow earrings for a funeral? its all Image. Explains the constant lying via unnamed sources.

    • Melissa says:

Fair question, which begs the other side — who loans jewels for a funeral?

We have heard all week how Phillip planned every piece of this down to the vehicle he designed for over a decade.

  67. ennie says:

I suspect that if she ever gets to be queen, she would like to wear the brightest and biggest, oh, but oh, so thoughtful, all “tributes”.
I really think that many things are not suitable anymore. It is a Marie Antoinette thing. They hide the price of her bespoke clothes, and even if they have the bling, I think it is in poor taste to wear bug things nowadays. A bit sad, but let them in the vault or return them to their countries. They are the government’s, so they would not sell them and use the money for the poor. They should so that.

  68. Donna B. says:

There is another picture of her looking at the camera & as a commenter on Twitter said, she did not look genuine at all. As a matter of fact, she had an “evil eye” look; as if to say, she “won”, i.e. Meghan wasn’t there. There is another picture retweeted on twitter by an English speaking person (the original picture posted-don’t know the foreign language used) emphasized kate’s stalkerism in how she stood next to Harry in the church, while william was on the other side of Harry. In other words, Harry was standing in between kate & william. Again, kate was leaning into Harry, while william looked obviously, very standoffish.

  69. Gabby says:

Kate looked good yesterday because she tried really hard.

She planned it knowing this would be both the first time and the last time she saw Harry in a very long while. The Mirror has an article about her staring at him during the service. She’s getting no love from the husband, and has nothing to lose.

  70. Carolind says:

Just seen blurred photos of her putting her arm round Charles and then kissing him on the cheek immediately before they left the funeral.

Saw that, I think it was Eugenie, had on a £5000 coat for the funeral. I am not sure of her husband’s finances – if he would have paid for this, her father or from her own money.

    • Original penguin says:

Pretty sure it would have been comped. She’s not a working royal so wouldn’t have to declare anything. The designer gets publicity- Zara does this a lot

      • FicklePickle says:

Plus, it’s a nondescript black coat that can take years of wear, and she’s got a LOT of family funerals looming in the near future. Definitely a worthwhile investment.

  71. Zaya says:

I’m immature, so I did snicker yesterday whenever I saw headlines talking about how Kate’s pearl necklace was a tribute to Prince Philip. 😂

  72. Robin says:

    https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/prince-william-kate-middleton-honor-prince-philip-twitter-funeral

I think this picture is less photoshopped and more normal for Kate. I know she may have been tearful, but it is closer to her usual skin. Like others are saying, there has been some great photoshopping on the outdoor and in-car photos. Apparently, meetings are being chaired by Charles regarding the future, slimmed down monarchy. People are raving about how Kate is the future. This was her moment.

    • Haylie says:

If that’s their future, it looks pretty bleak and unaccomplished.

Charles better keep Sophie on board so work gets done and she won’t outshine KKKate.

    • Saucy&Sassy says:

Robin, faux news is not a good link to include. That is Rupert Murdock’s and it’s the Trump followers, MAGAs, and white supremist news channel. Best never to click on anything to do with it.

  73. pasdesmots says:

Gosh, never actually desired to be royal…..

But getting to wear all of these exquisite pieces of jewellry, tough the pearl stuff might look a bit old fashioned, depending on who wears it…..
Still, I would just DIE to get my hands on them! 😀

  74. Chartreuse says:

I was expecting epaulettes, and way more buttons, so this coat dress or combo is nice. In looking at a link someone (sorry can’t remember who) shared about the Queen’s mourning rituals, the Queen wore a pussy bow style with her (usual) multi strand pearls and diamond broache to Lord Mountbatten’s funeral, and with the connection between him and PP, potential cosplay there. It seems TQ favours pearls and diamonds : pearl multi strand, diamond broache so she’s in with that generally. Earrings a bit much and the necklace a bit much. I mean for Kate it’s not dreadful. But I really like that coat on her. I’m not discussing her body which has been talked about. That’s her business. She’s being lauded endlessly for her perfection, beauty, modesty, rock of all royals and consort perfection etc all over the tabs and other media. She really made this about herself. Weird no one says that! Especially with those ‘look at me’ pics. Imagine if that were meghan!

Funny I picked an article from 2015 (I love the links to old articles) and in the Fail, she’s plain, boring, spends too much, overdresses. My, how times have changed.

  75. @ Lilwah. You are correct as far as I’m concerned. Kate really looks like a Disney villainess. That’s the vibe she gives off.

  76. bitchyarchitect says:

The necklace is too much with that huge bow. Simple pearls would have been better. She always over-accessorizes with too many fussy details like bows, buttons and a clunky choker. She just cannot do understated elegance- always has to be over the top fussy.
