Prince Harry wrote his father a ‘deeply personal’ letter ahead of Philip’s funeral

Prince Charles and Prince Harry at the World Premiere of Netflix's Our Planet at the Natural History Museum, Kensington, London on April 4th 2019

There are easily thirty different versions about what happened between Prince Harry, Prince William and Prince Charles on Saturday and Sunday following the funeral of Prince Philip. It’s gotten to the point where I can’t wait for Harry to get back to Montecito so he can have a nice long chat with Gayle King and clarify what exactly went down. Because, honestly, Willileaks and Chuck have no chill. They began leaking against Harry almost immediately and the many stories they’ve pushed have made little sense. Here’s a story which plays into the British media’s fantasy that Harry is desperate to bury the hatchet with his father and brother and that Harry is the one – the only one – doing the work to bridge the divide.

Prince Harry wrote his father a “deeply personal” note ahead of his homecoming for Prince Philip ’s funeral – but the pair have not repaired their shattered relationship ahead of his return to the US. The Duke of Sussex reached out to Prince Charles after their relationship “hit rock bottom”, as he prepared to see his family for the first time since quitting royal life last year.

But the Prince of Wales remains “very hurt” by Harry’s decision to appear in a tell-all interview last month with US chat show queen Oprah Winfrey, while the Duke of Edinburgh was seriously ill in hospital. Sources close to the Duke of Sussex – who now lives in California with wife Meghan and their one-year-old boy, Archie – told how he has been “forced to write letters” to his father due to a “complete communication breakdown”. In his correspondence he has “outlined his reasons for leaving” while promising to “respect the institution”, sources have revealed.

However, his brother Prince William is understood to be at odds with how to deal with him after Harry and Meghan launched an all out attack on the family during the two hour TV interview watched by 80 million. Despite the brothers being seen speaking after their grandpa’s funeral their relationship is understood to be “extremely frosty”.

Palace insiders revealed both future kings were “outraged” at the suggestion that they are “trapped” in their situation. A royal source said: “Truth be told, Harry didn’t really know what to expect before he came home, which is why he reached out before seeing everyone. He wrote a deeply personal note to his dad to try and set things straight but tensions are still running high and things haven’t exactly ironed out the way he had hoped. There had been a kind of unspoken agreement between everyone to park whatever has been on each person’s mind, and solely concentrate on supporting the Queen ahead of Prince Philip’s funeral. The feeling inside the camp was that it wasn’t the time nor the place to go over things, especially at such an emotional time for everybody involved.”

Charles has since travelled to his Welsh home in Llwynywermod where he is working from home and continuing to observe the royal mourning period which ends on Thursday. The source said: “Harry didn’t expect everything to be completely back to normal but his feeling after seeing his family was there is a lot of ground to make up. Whether that is harder or easier to do on the other side of the world remains to be seen. There is a lot of distrust in the camp and everything is still very, very raw.”

[From The Daily Mirror]

Considering Charles prefers to communicate with people via letters (and not emails or phone calls), I actually believe that Charles and Harry probably have written a few letters to each other over the past year, or perhaps just in the past six weeks. I doubt it’s just Harry writing letters to his dad and Charles not responding, just as I doubt that Harry is doing all of the emotional labor of this messy situation. Basically, I think someone (in Camp Chuck) is misrepresenting what is actually happening between father and son. I also think it’s interesting that no one is pretending that Harry wrote a letter to Baldingham. We would have heard about that before now, if it happened. Baldingham would have shown the letter to Dan Wootton and the Mail would have published it.

I can see Chuky now as he gets the letter, reacting like his mother Liz, turning to Cams and saying: why do they always come to me with with their all their problems? As Cams takes another shot of Irish whiskey.

  2. Brielle says:

So ‘grieving Charles’ leaked that Harry wrote him a letter…lol…

    • Yvette says:

What I don’t understand is where is the difference between Harry and Meghan talking to Oprah once and putting their sh$t right out there for everyone to see, and the Royals and their Aides ,who constantly run to and leak to royal commentators and the British media to put their sh$t out there? Why is it ‘vapors’ inducing for Harry and Meghan to do it and proper conduct for the Royals to do the same thing, only underhandedly?

      • Lorelei says:

@Yvette it reminds me of the way they view adultery. It’s totally fine as long as everyone is “discreet,” but the moment someone outs this gross behavior to the public, like Diana did with C&C, they become outraged. It’s not the actual crappy behavior they care about, they only care about the rest of the world finding out. They prefer to act like sh!t behind closed doors and anyone who doesn’t go along with this is the bad guy, in their warped minds.
        They’re so hypocritical

      • Brielle says:

Exactly!!at least Meghan and Harry told their story with no aides, courtiers ,palace sources…For 3 years, all we heard by ‘palace sources’ was ‘Meghan is a degree wife,me-again,Meghan made Kate cry,Meghan is a diva who bullied her aides by sending them emails at 5 am’ just the most ridiculous and harmful stories by anonymous sources…
After that interview,Roya had that article where she revealed that the brothers were talking and she made it seem like it was going somewhere and Harry,by Gayle, just set the record straight ‘ yeah we talked but it was inconclusive’…and Harry is untrustworthy like LOL….English media just want them to play the games of sources…

      • Elizabeth Kerri Mahon says:

Right? All this talk about how William and Charles don’t trust Harry because he talked to Gayle King after the Oprah interview but W&C run to their mouthpieces at the tabloids every chance they get.

      • Christine says:

Yvette, I think you have just written the MOST appropriate dressing down of the aristocracy, in recent memory. You are right, of course, it’s absurd that Harry and Meghan are the problem, to these absurdly privileged, utter drain on humanity.

  3. Aaliyah says:

I don’t believe it. Too many conflicting narratives in the press in the past few days and this letter sounds like something he already wrote during Sussexit. The “so-called” sources are probably made up. Sounds like ” fanfiction” since the Sussexes and their friends don’t interact with trashy tabloids. The tabloids are scrambling and throwing everything to see what sticks. Maybe Charles leaked it, but I don’t know. I hope Harry’s safe and well and on his way to Montecito soon.

    • BayTampaBay says:

I do not believe it either. This is fan fiction.

The Mirror is a trashy tabloid but no where near as bad as The Fail, The Scum and The Slow.

      Also, The Mirror is left-leaning.

    • Amy Bee says:

      @Aaliyah: Exactly.

    • Ginger says:

I don’t believe it either. It was probably what he wrote down when he was wanting to leave. Harry said his father wasn’t talking his calls so he probably did write a letter.

  4. Lauren says:

I was reading yesterday that DW has a letter, but from the wording, it is a letter from around the Sussexit time. If Harry did write to Chuck though before the funeral, Chuck should watch it and not release the letter to the tabloid, because if it does, Harry will know just who it was and have to express again disappointment of his father, and we know how much Chuck values his image.

    • lanne says:

Hey, if Charles releases Harry’s letter, then Meghan and Harry will have another thing in common. How ironic it is that the 2 of them have toxic families is common: just goes to show how little distance there is between graspy moneygrubbers and royals–two sides of the Entitled Trash coin

    • Ainsley7 says:

Charles wouldn’t release the letter. He knows it’s illegal. He sued the tabloids already for them printing his own letters. He’s a lot of things, but he’s not stupid.

    • (The OG) Jan90067 says:

Didn’t Charles ASK Harry to put his “half in half out” ideas IN WRITING *before* they decided to leave last year? My feeling is that THIS is THIS letter they’re trying to pass off as a “new” letter.

      • Amy Bee says:

@(The OG) Jan90067: Yeah, I think so too. Charles briefed the press on this letter because nothing happened between him and Harry on Saturday as the press expected. He probably promised the press that they would have some information after the funeral but because he didn’t talk to Harry he gave them information on the letter that was written last year.

      • Sunday says:

Yes, 100%. They say that Harry outlined reasons for leaving, which makes no sense in the current context but which sounds remarkably like what Charles requested he put in writing last year. IF they had a recent letter it would be perfectly legal for Charles (or a CH rep) to describe it in detail to the tabloids who could then summarize it, they just can’t print it verbatim or post photos of it. The fact that they haven’t done that and are instead quoting a word here, a phrase there gives up the game; they wouldn’t give up the opportunity to run a detailed summary of the whole thing if it actually existed.

  5. Becks1 says:

It also sort of sounds like this letter is from a year ago, right? Outlining his reasons for leaving and promising to respect the institution? that sounds like something Harry would have written around the time of Sussexit.

Anyway I’m sure Harry does write letters to his father, it seems like Charles likes to write and receive letters, but its interesting that we have a clear story of Harry reaching out to his father – but nothing about William.

i’m inclined to believe this leak comes from Charles’ camp, to make Charles look good (in that, Harry is doing the work and reaching out to him) – and bc the lack of mention of William is interesting. Charles wants it known that he and Harry are communicating, not harry and william.

    • Snuffles says:

I agree. It sounds like a retread of his resignation letter.

    • Cecilia says:

Exactly. This is from around sussexit. And dan is presenting it as an exclusive.

    • Ainsley7 says:

Prince Charles is the one who leaked that the feud was between Harry and William rather than Meghan and Kate way back. It was all during his 70th birthday ‘I’ll be a better monarch than the Queen and William’ campaign. He was the peace keeping father to his immature feuding sons. He’d never attack William directly in the same way he’d go after Harry because of Will’s position in line. So, he wants their feud to continue because it makes William look bad but not so bad that his image can’t be salvaged later. It’s funny to me that so many give Charles a pass. He’s the one who started using smear campaigns against others in the press to make himself look better. So many things would be different now if he hadn’t gone down that road. William and Harry wouldn’t have even had their own office. Charles admitted that they needed a separate office because they would never be able to trust his. So, he knows how much pain he has caused, but it doesn’t stop him.

    • (The OG) Jan90067 says:

OOPS!! Sorry Becks, I posted before I read down and realized you posted the same thing!

      Great minds… 😊

    • Amy Bee says:

@Becks1: Because Charles doesn’t have any information to give to the press, the objective of talking about the letter now is to portray Harry as begging forgiveness. We all know Harry is not asking for that.

    • Sunday says:

      Agree 100%

  6. Jegede says:

Charles is full of sh!t for leaking this.
And I’m sceptical, cause this sounds like a letter Harry would have written BEFORE the Sussexes left the BRF. Not now.

It’s obvious the palace have decided to keep the tabloid beast happy by feeding them different and divergent Harry information.

But will there be nay outrage on this leak or, other info drip fed to Camille Toenail, Royal Nikkah, Dan Wootton, Richard Kay e.t.c or is that reserved for Gayle King?🙄

  7. Izzy says:

No source close to the Sussexes would interact with the Mirror, so either this is complete BS or Camp Chuck leaked it.

  8. Serena says:

How dare Harry said they are trapped? They’re behaving as if he accused them of murder, it’s unbelievable.

  9. FancyHat says:

If it is actually leaked can’t Harry just sue?

  10. Midnight@theOasis says:

I still can’t wrap my head around why Harry and Meghan have to be the ones to apologize and go groveling back to the Family begging forgiveness. They’ve done nothing wrong. They told their truth on how they were treated for the past four years. If the Family can’t deal with that truth that’s on them.

    • lanne says:

      They don’t. It’s just the narcissist’s playbook:

      The narcicists’s prayer:

      That didn’t happen.
And if it did, it wasn’t that bad.
And if it was, that’s not a big deal.
And if it is, it is not my fault.
And if it was, I didn’t mean it.
      And if I did.
      You deserved it.

    • lucy2 says:

It is mind blowing that them talking about the terrible treatment is worse than the actual treatment itself.
It’s definitely classic abuse, and puts it all on the victim. Like when a woman says a man harassed or abused her, it’s so often “how can you say that? You are destroying his career!”

  11. Nomegusta says:

Harry is better than me…these people don’t deserve the chances he gives them

  12. Digital Unicorn says:

Am sure we’ll be seeing excerpts on the front page of the Fail tomorrow once Cain gets his hands on it.

The question is who are the leaks aimed at – embiggening Chuck by making it look like he and Harry are communication or putting Cain in his place by taking control of the narrative? Probably both.

  13. ABritGuest says:

Yeah this doesn’t make sense- why would Harry be writing a letter talking about reasons for leaving now? And reference to communications breaking down & having to write reminds of what was briefed last January about Harry having to put his Sussexit plans in writing & being wary about it leaking (which it was) & Meghan mentioning writing to the firm on Oprah. We also know that Mirror is blacklisted by the Sussexes so no source close to them is talking to the Mirror.

This article is a mish mash based on past events & made to look like it’s in the current timeline. If this letter to Charles exists- it’s not recent.

    • Couch potato says:

I’m thinking the same. He DID write to his father back then. He was reluctant because he knew the minute he put the plans on paper it would be leaked, and he was right.

  14. Myra says:

How are they breaking different versions of completely contradictory stories all at the same time? Are they not embarrassed? The funny thing is no one knows where Harry is. With multiple versions of the Saturday/Sunday event, no one now can say with certainty how things unfolded. Was there a letter? Did they meet at Frogmore? Did Charles go to Wales? Was Queen Kate there? What a circus.

    • Snuffles says:

This is why I don’t want him to go back in July. It will just be another round of ENDLESS BS.

I only want to hear about Archie’s 2nd birthday, Baby Girl Sussex, and the latest on all of their Archewell projects and what other cool stuff they are cooking up.

      • Drun says:

        Me, too!

      • Myra says:

Same. Maybe he can release a pre-recorded video. His family is so toxic.

      • BothSidesNow says:

Yes! Please Harry and a Meghan step away from this toxic dump of family and enjoy your lives!! You are both being used and abused all to the benefit of your respective families!! Live long and love each other dearly as you have done since the beginning!

  15. Bess says:

Before Meghan came along, do you think Harry realized his father and brother were throwing him under the buss in terms of bad press? Do you think Harry knew that he and his future wife would always be knocked around in order to make his father and brother look good by comparison?

    • Cecilia says:

No. Honestly this whole thing even surprised harry. Yes harry has always been williams scapegoat, but more to protect william than to start a witch hunt on harry. Since marrying meghan it has turned into the latter. Because they fault him for choosing her.

They genuinely never wanted meghan there. Which is why the magnitude of this whole thing has been so big.

      • Brielle says:

Robert Lacey did say that Harry thought he was a scapegoat to William when they were teens…

    • Becks1 says:

Yes and no. He obviously always knew he was the scapegoat, and that he was portrayed a certain way in the press while William was always protected.

So I think with Meghan it was a few things – including that he thought the palace would protect her as they protected Kate, even if he was still going to be sacrificed, and I don’t think he expected the attacks to actually ramp up the way they did. I also think that Meghan made him realize that he didn’t have to go through life as William’s scapegoat.

I saw a comment on twitter once that I loved – you can’t be surprised that he left the people who always treated him as the spare for the person who treats him like a priority. (something like that.)

      • equality says:

He probably also worried that it would eventually be Archie thrown under the bus to protect George.

    • Amy Bee says:

@Bess: Harry always knew. The whole story about him talking drugs was used to make Charles look like a good father and to protect William.

  16. Noki says:

People only think that H & M talk and the Royals are full of dignified silence. Because most people outside the workings of celeb gossips dont understand leaks and sources. So i actually wish Gayle would not try to be their mouth piece, they see H & M actually doing interviews with Oprah and Gayle speaking for them, they have no idea that smeone like Charles or Wiliam aso have tabloids on speedial. So H & M will continue to look petty or attention seekers when all their doing is clearing their names, while CH and KP hide behind folks doing their dirty work. The larger audience simplydoes not know this is happening.

    • Pepperpot says:

That’s why Harry spoke on the unwritten contract between the BRF and the tabloids. If people still choose to ignore the the obvious well that’s on them.

      • MeToforever says:

Most people don’t understand what he was saying because they have no working knowledge of all this. That part went right over everyone’s head. They heard it was really Kate who made Meghan cried. They heard, someone asked about the baby’s skin color, they heard she was suicidal, that Charles cut them off and took away security, but the rest of it went over most none royal watcher’s head. That’s the weak part of the interview and should have been delved into further, but as with everything human, the emotional bits are what became center stage and at the end of the day, Oprah is more a business woman than their friend, so she delved into what would sell. The part about private vs public life for instance should have been part of the main interview and Oprah should have pressed on the invisible contract and force Harry to expose his family’s speaking to the tabloids, making it clear that they (his family) were briefing against them. Harry said it but he was still protecting them and Oprah should have pushed that point. This is why it can start up again w/o most of those same people who watched the interview picking up on it.

  17. Amy Bee says:

” Basically, I think someone (in Camp Chuck) is misrepresenting what is actually happening between father and son.”

    Yeah, I agree.

I wonder if Charles and Kate worked together on Saturday’s performance? Charles was the one who waved off the cars giving Kate the opportunity to play act as the “Peacemaker”.

    • Couch potato says:

I doubt the two of them specifically were working together. There might have been some plans made by Chuck/Clarence house which were pressed on Will. Willnot decided he didn’t won’t to and walked away, leaving Keen behind. She saw her opportunity to be the peacemaker when Willnot threw a silent tantrum.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Chuck wanted to walk alone to clear his head before the mingling, and then everyone followed.

  18. Over it says:

Yet again another reason why Harry needs to cut these people out of his life .they are toxic as F

  19. Sofia says:

Even if this letter could be a year old, it’s pretty shitty of Charles to run to the Mirror about this and tell them. But then again, Charles has always been a useless parent?

  20. Margaret says:

There is not a nickles worth of difference between the Windsor, and the markles. One has money, but both are trashy. Imho.

    • MsIam says:

And the Windsors should be treated like the Markles too, imo. Tiaras, castles and all.

      • BlueToile says:

OMG. You are so right. On some comment board a few days ago someone posted that Meghan was not the right one for Harry because her family was “too dramatic.” I kid you not. 😳 So…Chuck marrying Di for her blue blood and virginity, the marriage effectively over the second Harry was born (that alone must have taken Harry years of therapy to get over), Chuck’s mistress, Di’s affairs, the incessant whispers about Harry’s paternity (another year of therapy), Di’s violent death (more therapy!), the York’s multiple scandals, Anne’s multiple affairs while married, Philip’s blatant racism and living with his mistress…none of this even registered with this person. Clearly people think everything is ok as long as you have lots of money. I wanted to scream.

  21. Tashiro says:

We don’t know if any of this is true or not but I can easily see Harry writing to his father just to let him know he loves him. Harry et al have lost their grandfather but Charles has lost his father and compass no matter how complicated the relationship was.

  22. Rapunzel says:

The Fail reported this and said that Harry wrote to Charles because he couldn’t get in touch with him any other way.

We know that Charles wasn’t taking Harry’s calls, but we also know they spoke after the interview. So this letter is definitely an old one that Harry sent when Charles would not pick up the phone.

I’m not sure Charles leaked this though. DW is Wills’ buddy.

    • Pepperpot says:

DW trashed Charles in that creepy letter to Will. Charles’ team most likely gave DW a bone to stop the negativity. We shall see.

These royals are in deep with the tabloids.

  23. NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

I think Charles cut Harry off completely and I think Harry made his attempt to reconcile. I don’t think Harry is part of even the family any longer. I just think there will be nothing but silence. I think everyone is going their separate ways, I think Harry will return for his grandmother’s funeral and we will never publicly see him with the royals again.

    • BlueToile says:

Question: Will Harry’s position as Duke of Sussex require him to be at any future coronations? I am curious about this.

  24. Over it says:

You know what’s saddest about the way Chucky and baldy are behaving towards Harry and his wife? Harry is about to become a dad for the second time. Sorry third because I count the miscarriage as a baby also. As I was saying he is having another child and Chucky should take this time to see how he could be a wonderful and better grandpa to his grandchildren especially considering they live in different countries. But no. He continues to let baldemort rage and he continues to act cold and detached. Has he learned nothing from the way his parents treated him? My heart breaks for Harry and by extension his children.

  25. MeToforever says:

They’re all trash and belongs in the bin. I’m sorry but Meghan’s life was way better before she got mixed up with this lot. Yes, she has her trash pile, but she learned long ago how to deal with them and left some in the gutter where they belong years ago, while maintaining a relationship with her toxic father by using distance. Now not only does she have to deal with this weird arse family who wants her and her children dead, (if they don’t, they certainly have a weird way of showing it – cutting off security and leaking locations.) She has to constantly witness the family she successfully dealt with years ago given a platform to trash her repeatedly. I truly hope Harry’s love is the greatest love that has ever loved because I can’t think of anything she has now that’s worth all the negatives, or one thing she currently have that she couldn’t have gotten without all the negatives.
