Duchess Meghan plans to write more & she’s ‘also keen to write books for adults too’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Reunite With Prince William and Kate Middleton for Final Royal Engagement

On Monday, I was thinking about how it sounded like the British media had punched themselves out when it came to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. This past weekend was the first time in months where there wasn’t wall-to-wall royal coverage of some real or imagined controversy involving Harry and Meghan. And then on Tuesday, we learned about Meghan’s childrens’ book, The Bench, and suddenly we’re off to the races once again. The British media is mad about all of it! They’re mad that she would dare to write a book about fathers considering her own father is a toxic a–hole. They’re mad that… she might have gotten paid, and that she used her name! From the Mail:

The royal, who went by the pen name ‘Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex’, said in a statement: ‘The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born.

It is not known if Meghan has received an advance for the book and whether any of the proceeds will be donated to charity, but a branding expert has suggested it would have already netted her £500,000 following a ‘bidding war to secure her first venture’.

Popular culture expert Nick Ede told FEMAIL that the Duchess of Sussex would’ve likely been paid between a £250,000 to £500,000 advance to write the book. In authoring a children’s book she follows in the footsteps of fellow Royals Sarah, the Duchess of York, who has produced her own money-spinning series, Princess Michael of Kent and even Prince Charles, who penned a children’s book called The Old Man of Lochnagar in 1980 to raise money for the Children’s Trust.

[From The Daily Mail]

“…Who went by the pen name ‘Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex’…” Reader, I lol’d. That’s not her pen name, that’s HER NAME! She didn’t even use her HRH because she knew that would make people even angrier! Her name is Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex. Ugh. As for the money… again, it’s worth noting that no one even knew that Meghan had a book deal. I would imagine that she did get an advance when she signed a book contract, but anyone trying to tell you what the book deal is worth is a day late and a dollar short. I would also assume that Penguin Random House signed Meghan to a multi-book deal, which, again, LOLZ. From Katie Nicholl at Vanity Fair:

Sources close to Meghan say she has long wanted to write children’s books, and that hopes to write more books in the future if her debut is a success.

“Meghan loves writing and she’s very good at it,” said a source close to the Duchess. “She wanted to have a go at writing a children’s book first and depending on the success of this, there will be more. She is also keen to write books for adults too.”

It is not known how much Meghan’s first book deal is worth, but given her global profile she will likely have been paid a sizable advance for the book, which will be published on June 8. Random House is the first publishing company to work with the Duchess, and described the book as ‘timeless’.

“Meghan’s touching text explores the relationship between fathers and sons and undeniably tugs at the heartstrings that parents and caregivers feel,” said Mallory Loehr, EVP & Publisher, Random House Books for Young Readers Group. “Christian’s art beautifully matches the tender emotion of Meghan’s words, and every spread is infused with a vibrant sense of joy and love. The Bench is timeless—it feels destined to become one of those books that people will be reading for generations to come.”

[From Vanity Fair]

Considering her blog, The Tig, and her guest-editorship of British Vogue and her love of writing Instagram captions, I would also assume that writing books has been one of Meghan’s big goals for many years, and it’s probably a dream she’s had since before meeting Harry. I can only imagine the anger, incandescence and rage from the palaces if she tried to do this while she was still in the UK. God, every single day I’m so happy they managed to get away. Every single day, I laugh about how people on Salt Island thought Harry and Meghan would crash and burn in America.

And of course Fergie wrote children’s books back in the day too-but I guess that will be conveniently forgotten by these people.

    • Cecilia says:

Im surprised they pointed that out to be honest

    • Elizabeth K. Mahon says:

Fergie has actually written a ton of children’s books. I was surprised by how many, not just the Budgie books, as well as diet books with Weight Watchers, a book about Queen Victoria, and now her historical fiction debut.

      • molly says:

Her historical ROMANCE fiction! I, for one, can not wait for this. She’s such a thirsty mess and I love.

    • murt says:

Yup I was thinking the exact same thing! Meghan/Harry are going down the Fergie path, including w/ the Oprah interview. Hopefully things will turn out better for them than they did for Fergie.

      • Merricat says:

Definitely not Fergie’s path, unless Fergie is a secret philanthropist. Lol.

      • murt says:

Looks like Fergie did try launching a charity back in the ’90s, as part of her children’s book launch — it seems a bit shady – from her wikipedia, it says she launched her charity, “Chances for Children” in 1994, and was criticised for pocketing money through it (she denied the claims).

      • swirlmamad says:

Not even in the same orbit as Fergie.

      • Fawsia says:

Shady, Karen! When did Fergie sign close to 200 million dollar deals? Girl bye!

  2. Becks1 says:

Good for you Megs. Get all that advance money, get all the money from the sales, get a multi book deal – get it all. Let the haters stay mad.

    • Marie says:

Oh, and are they mad! I had to stop reading comments on another site last night. How is it bad that she’s actually producing work to earn money instead of using taxpayer money to go on pointless choo choo train rides or considers a few zooms a week so much work that she has it put out there it’s such a burden? *facepalm*

  3. Noki says:

‘PEN name ‘ LOL .I usually try not to engage with the irrational idiots on FB but boy was I busy today especially when I mentioned DIVORCEE Fergie still going by Sara,Duchess of York on her books and that dragon Princess Michael of Kent using HRM on comercial endeavours.

  4. Sofia says:

I am sure she does but Nicholls knows as much about Meghan’s future plans as I do.

    • Lizzie says:

Does anyone close to Meghan use ‘keen’ besides Harry? It seemed a made up quote.

      • Saucy&Sassy says:

Lizzie, Also, “have a go”. That’s a British expression not an American expression.

      • Shawna says:

I feel like this is the legacy of Katie “Keen” Nicholls. Isn’t she the one who started using that phrase ad nauseam?

    • Chelsea says:

This is the same womam who last year said Harry and Meghan were im a rough spot after signing with rheir speaking agency because covid meant they couldnt do speeches which she thought was their main gig only for their Netflix deal.to be revealed a few weeks later. She also said last year that if Meghan was going to do a book it would be a memoir but now apparently her sources tell her after the book.was announced that Meghan wanted to write children’s books all along? LOL.

      • Ginger says:

She also reported last year that Harry and William have mended fences and are close again.
She clearly just makes stuff up. These sources are the voices in her head.

  5. Neners says:

UK press: YOU CAN’T DO THAT!

US: Awesome! Love it! Do more of that!

I’m so glad she is HOME!

  6. Snuffles says:

They’re all secretly thrilled that Meghan did something new that they can rage write about and profit from the clicks. They’ve spent the past few weeks rehashing old stories out of desperation.

    • Cecilia says:

Yep. Their pockets were drying up and it was becoming noticeable. It is also partly the reaaon why i think nobody will ever reveal the skeletons in KP’s closet. As long as meghan is out there working, they will always have something to write about.

Nonetheless im extremely happy that meghan is doing her thing and i hope that she won’t let anything stop her.

    • Amy Bee says:

Yeah, they were very disappointed that Meghan wasn’t physically at the concert on Sunday

      • JT says:

They are so excited that Meghan is making the news. They must have been depressed in her absence. They never have this much energy for Kate. I’m sure they are all preparing for Meg’s appearance at VaxLive this weekend.

  7. GuestWho says:

This is how you know the source close to the duchess are the voices in Nicholl’s head:

“She is also KEEN to write books for adults too.” Does she know any other word for interested, excited, eager…get a thesaurus ffs.

    • Leanne says:

That’s what I was going to say- no one who is actually taking to Meghan would use “keen” to describe her.

    • Merricat says:

      Lol

    • MerlinsMom1018 says:

Cue ma midds yelling to the press “Catherine is writing a full length novel. The novel to end all novels. It will be a series of novels. Pulitzer Prize novels”

      • 809Matriarch says:

Bet she is burning up the phone lines telling Top CEO to start snapping pics for a Kambridge Kids Koffee Table book.

    • Emily_C says:

I was thinking that. The word “keen” has started to annoy the crap out of me. It’s so childish.

    • Shawna says:

As I wrote above, isn’t this originally from Katie Nicholls’s coverage of Kate? She used it so often it’s just now a stock phrase for any journalist covering the BRF.

  8. S808 says:

Would it be cheesy to say I want a self help book from her? She’s incredibly driven and ambitious. I want to know how she copes or her philosophy. Give me some tips or your secret Meghan!

    • Clara says:

Me too!! I’d pay good money for a Q&A session with her!

    • sa says:

I didn’t even realize that was the book I want from her until I read your comment. She needs to share her secrets for staying so driven!

    • Topaz says:

I would so love a self help book written by her. She is such an incredible woman, her ambition, her intelligence, her being present in the moment, just amazing.

    • TaraBest says:

I’m hoping we might get a podcast where she addresses some of this. I’m also interested in her philosophy/outlook. She’ll probably say “meditation” which I just cannot get in to no matter how many people talk about how much it’s helped them! lol.

      • Shawna says:

A podcast could be a trial balloon. See how people react, and if it’s well, then get the book proposal ready.

    • Case says:

Not at all! I think she’d be great at that sort of thing. It sounds like she’s super motivated and has good routines. I feel like she could share a lot of valuable advice.

    • booboocita says:

If she did write such a book, I imagine she’d consult with mental health experts first and get their input. I can see her writing the forward to a book about dealing with stress and anxiety, with contributions from counselors and therapists. I would read the s**t out of that book, and buy extra copies for friends and family.

  9. Roserose says:

Awesome. I’ll buy any book she writes and read it with relish.

  10. Cecilia says:

These people need to stop pocket watching meghan and I highly doubt katie “liar” Nicholl has spoken to any of meghans friends. We all know megs loves to write. She had a blog for gods sake. And she always writes notes. I honestly think this was a spontaneous idea. As in meghan wrote this for harry and then she (or one of her friends) said she should make it a book. That being said, with all the free publicity the BM is giving this book there’s no doubt in my mind she’s going to make serious money of it. And i hope she keeps it all to herself.

  11. Cessily says:

Oh what she could do with a fictional novel…

  12. OriginalLala says:

I don’t get the hate, she is a former lifestyle blogger and many blogger get books deals, it’s not a far-fetched idea at all. I’ll buy it, even though her writing can get a bit too purple-y for me at time, but I will 100% buy her book because I used to enjoy The Tig !

  13. Woke says:

I always tought it would be either a travel book or a cook book if she went that road. I’m so proud of her. I hope she keeps the money, she deserves it.

  14. MerlinsMom1018 says:

I think I will buy this book and donate it to my public library. Yep Yep.
(I have said it before and will continue to say that green dress is EVERYTHING on Meghan! Thank you Kaiser for posting it!!!)

  15. Merricat says:

I hope she does write more, and I hope the monarchy quakes in its boots every time they hear that a new book is coming out. Lol.

  16. TheOriginalMia says:

Pen name? Lol. Stay mad! Y’all really thought not having the use of HRH was gonna matter to people. She could go by just Meghan and this book would sell out pre-order. But she chose to go by her legal, married name & those on Salty Island & racists worldwide can die mad.

  17. AVEA says:

What’s with this obsession the tabloids have with the Sussexes donating their money to charity? Maybe she will donate some, she is that kind of person, but even if she doesn’t, how is that any of our business? She can do what she wants with it

    • MsIam says:

Evidently, the Sussexes are not to have any taxpayer money, none from the royal family and now none from their business endeavors. Not sure how they are supposed to survive based on that.

      • Maria says:

These people don’t want them to survive.
They are absolutely unhinged! Even when the author of The Boy on the Bench tweeted there are NO similarities between her book and Meghan’s, the trolls are still screaming it’s plagiarism. They don’t care about facts or logic. These people are narcissistic abusers in real life too probably.

  18. MsIam says:

As soon as I saw the word “keen” I knew that it had to come from Katie Nicholl. Which means its absolute fiction. I would bet my next paycheck that no “sources” close to Meghan use the word “keen”. Ever.

    • Eurydice says:

Not if they’re American sources. I don’t know that “keen” has been used unironically in the US since the 1950’s. I have heard it used recently as a euphemism for someone who’s up for sex anytime, anywhere.

      • MsIam says:

Yeah, “keen” is right up there with “Gee whiz” and “Daddio” here in the US, lol.

  19. Marie says:

Is one really “keen to” if they actually produce the work? Asking the BM.

  20. Amelie says:

I’m glad the criticism isn’t “how unroyal of her to write a children’s book!!!” They can’t pull that garbage because Charles and Fergie have both done of it and there is precedent for it. And I’m guessing they were very careful with the timing of the announcement. I wonder if there were plans to announce it earlier and then with Prince Philip’s fragile health, they decided to hold off and do it well after the public mourning period was over. Because you know they would have loved nothing more than attack Meghan for distracting from Prince Philip’s passing. She got enough criticism over whether she was going to attend or not attend the funeral. My guess is the book was always going to come out June 8th but typically authors announce release dates months in advance. Anyways, I’m just glad they got the timing right.

  21. Amy Bee says:

As I said on another post, I’m betting Harry has a book deal too.

  22. Over it says:

What the F does Katie I know absolutely nothing know. Stay in your keenbridges lane Katie, you are not needed or wanted by Megs and haz.

  23. Laalaa says:

I love everything about this except the title of the book 😀 maybe because that word translated in Croatian sounds really … fugly?

  24. Charfromdarock says:

Keen means the source is either made up or a brilliant troll of the FFQ of Keen.

  25. Mcmmom says:

I will buy the children’s book because I like H&M, I like kids’ books, and I support anything that raises awareness of the struggles of military families. I also bought her cookbook.

But….I don’t await her adult book. I’m sorry to say this because I really, really like her, but I don’t think she’s a very good writer. Maybe she’ll be better with a good editor?

    • Cessily says:

I personally was thinking of a fictional book, the kind where the names and dates are changed to protect the guilty.. it was more of a 🤔 with a 😂🤣.
I read about 5 books or more a week (ok more most weeks) so I probably would read whatever she wrote. Has to be better than a lot of things published.

    • JaneBee87 says:

@MCMMOM I am Team Sussex and love her. She is amazing and has so many talents, but I struggle with her writing… really hope she focuses on other pursuits that showcase her strengths.

  26. Islandgirl says:

Every time I see these projects…that no one knows about until they are completed and ready to let us know…I am so glad that the BRF refused the half in half out model.

    • BnLurkN4eva says:

Yes. I am happy that HnM’s offer of 1/2 in 1/2 out was declined. I think they (BRF) felt so certain that they would never be able to be independent that they took that hard pass in an effort to back them (HnM) into a corner. I love that HnM said, nope, we’re good and took their chances with the whole wide world, it’s paying off in spades.

    • Lady D says:

      Me too, Islandgirl, me too.

  27. Mooney says:

Meghan is such a beauty ❤️ gorgeous in green 💖.

Whatever she earns from her book, it’s for herself not the charities. That’s her money. Did the derangers ask fergie or Chuck to donate the money?

    • Curious says:

i think Meghan will donate some % to charity.. since she works with charities. many people do this when they have a charity close to their own life experiences.

  28. Athena says:

I find it interesting how they always want every penny that Harry and Meghan earn to go to charity. How are they expected to pay for their living expenses and the security they have no choice on if not to earn and keep the money.

    • Kalana says:

Money is power. The same people pretend that Charles is still paying for them

And you don’t want to inspire the “wrong” people into accumulating money.

And again the same people will celebrate any demonstration of wealth by the Cambridges or the Middletons.

  29. A Guest says:

    No, not “KEEN”!!!

    MAKE IT STOP!

  30. walsh says:

She didn’t use her HRH because she got it taken away

  31. Lindalou says:

Nothing against Meghan as I like her. But I get irritated when ANY celebrity just gets to write and publish books so easily. Yet real authors can spend a lifetime of rejection etc and never get the backing, publicity etc. that a celebrity gets. It irritates me and I never buy the book (unless it’s their memoir).

    • Curious says:

its not an easy book. its a book about relationship with fathers and sons in infant stage , don’t think there is a book ever written about this for children . the bond, the love , the care and so on. i personally had my sons deep love in everything. they did things with their father too , but it was always me to the end. till they turn 14/15. the oldest started to show more interest in his father work. the sport part of what i did. he wanted to share that with his father .. then it was dad and i are going shopping for games. i was locked out.lol it didn’t bother me. its just that they grew up and had interest similar to their dads and i still got my love on the side i was good at. example- whatever they wanted to eat for dinner i made it since they was babies.i cooked it. girlfriend issues they came to me . clothes and dating and such ,they came to me . . in this case Meghan is a huge name , they are making money too. which they will not make otherwise.. meghan is not a new writer, she always wrote .just not a book. but she did help to make that cookbook with the other women, and helped sell it .

    • MsIam says:

But the celebrity still has to produce something worthwhile for people to want to continue to buy it. And life is not fair to anyone, there are too many would be authors, chefs, jewelry and clothing designers, you name it and not enough slots for everyone to get a chance. And if a celebrity wants to try something new and branch off then why begrudge them?

    • Manjaree says:

I agree. Every other celebrity seems to write children’s books. It must be frustrating for actual children’s authors. This is also a general problem in publishing, the publishers’ going for big names rather than nurturing talent and craft. Nothing against Meghan specifically, obviously why shouldn’t she do what any other celebrity does.

    • Merricat says:

There is actually a division within most publishing houses specifically for celebrity-written work. She is not taking anything away from anyone.

  32. Meg says:

I remember this page even pointing out that meghans writing for British vogue wasnt great, that she needed an editor which she should have for books she writes

    • Jayna says:

I don’t like the way Meghan writes at all. She gives fascinating and thoughtful interviews in person (she is exremely impressive), and great in speeches, but not writing, or at least not for me. I have cringed to a certain degree at all of her writing in print that I’ve read. So I would have no interest in a book written for adults by her. An editor can only help so much. It’s the way she writes. For others, maybe they will enjoy a book by her, though. I’m sure it will sell and be a best seller.

Now, a children’s book with a great message and great illustrations is a different story. I’m sure it will be very nice.

  33. Bean says:

It’s currently the #1 best seller in children’s books on Amazon 😄

    • Curious says:

lmao. her abusers are shitting bricks. their plot didn’t work. good .happy for her to survive her abusers and went on to do good things. she fought a huge power firm.and is winning over them..

  34. Curious says:

the funny thing about all this is that the BM/ press actually promoted her book by writing about it , even if it was in a negative sense. people got curious and checked it out .lmao.Meghan had to just sit back and watch them work for her .lmao.

  35. Christine says:

I can’t help it, the fact that she wrote a poem for Harry, after his first Father’s Day, made my heart squeeze.
