I can read/hear about people dying, even those I admire or are somewhat close, and barely shed a tear. Read about a dog passing away, Bo in this case, and I’m a blubbering mess. Hits closer as my dog is 14/15, in good health and happy, but know he’s in his twilight years.

      Your comment fits me exactly.
Their sweetness, innocence and unconditional love is unmatched.
      RIP sweet Bo.

Blubbering mess over here too. I lost my 17 year old cat last November and I’m so grateful that i got so much time with him while working from home during lockdown. I feel Michelle’s post deeply. 😭

    • Charfromdarock says:

I’m the same. The Thoughts of Dog, dog passed too and I’m a weeping mess.

My boy is 10 today and I just want to hit pause and have him live forever.

I blubbered a little when Obama described Bo as “happy to see us on our good days, our bad days, and everyday in between”. That’s exactly what is so wonderful about animals, and I think you can tell how important he was to their family.

it’s always sad when dogs die. When I first heard this news, I felt like Bo must have been pretty old and had a good long life before dying of old age, because it feels like when they got him at the beginning of Obama’s first term in 2009 was a lifetime ago, but it’s only 12 years! Absolutely mad to think about all the history shoved into those 12 years to make it feel like such an eternity. Is that a long life for a purebred though?

My dog was around the same age when she died. Very sudden kidney failure. She was gone within a week of seeming poorly, and I was away at college at the time and hadn’t seen her for months, so I was very sad that I didn’t get to say goodbye to her, but my mother was on another level. She was super attached to her and hadn’t ever had a dog before. She was bringing a friend with her to the vet to be with her as emotional support for when our dog was put to sleep, but sadly she died on her own before they could get there. My mother was absolutely devastated by the whole experience and will never get a dog again. At least it seems that the Obamas were able to all be around to say goodbye and be with him at the end. One silver lining to quarantine for the girls, I’m sure.

@ Plums, I am so sorry to hear of the great loss that your family went through. I was the same way when I lost my Maine Coon to cancer, second bout too, and I understand.
As for their tributes, they are so touching and true in their love and dedication to Bo and how much he meant to the entire family. It was truly a special and emotional tribute and the fact that they thanked those who adored Bo as well is a testament as to the type of people that they are.
I balled my eyes out reading and watching their tributes to Bo. I am so glad that the girls were home as well.

      • Plums says:

Maine Coons are amazing cats. Sorry for your loss. It always sucks when pets develop health issues before old age. They have short enough lives as it is without problems that take them even earlier than you expect.

And totally agree about the Obamas releasing these beautiful statements. They’ve perfected the art of the classy, heartfelt eulogy.

I have two dogs and can’t bear to even imagine losing either. I know it will happen, but it seems an insufferable loss.

Recently, my boyfriend had to euthanize his sweet cat. I went with him for support, and it was my first experience with such a thing. His girl had been having breathing issues for days, and it was definitely time. In those moment before she passed, he was loving on her and telling her how much he adored her, and after days of suffering and being uncomfortable, she looked up at him with those big green eyes and started PURRING. That is how she left this world. I still remind him of that on his bad days; I tell him how loved she was, and how she absolutely knew it.

This sad news just bummed me out over the weekend. I think Bo had cancer? Anyway, I dread the day. 😭

Re: lifespan, pure breds: I think it varies by breed. I got my first dog, Fergus (a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) ~5.5 years ago — a few years after my DH died — and he is my soul mate. That breed has an average lifespan of 10-ish years. Each year beyond that is a gift, I think. Wanting not to wait until he’s in his senior years when he won’t be able to enjoy the company, I just adopted a Cavvie puppy (on the breeder’s suggestion, a female — Fiona). They don’t love each other yet LOL.

    • FicklePickle says:

Larger breeds never live as long as smaller ones. It does ultimately depend on the breed, the individual dogs’ family history of disease, the individual dogs’ environment and diet and exercise regimen, and a healthy dose of sheer dumb luck.

Bo was a Portuguese Water Dog, and according to the experts this particular breed has an average life span of 10-14 years. Very standard for bigger dog breeds.

He and Sunny really were great little ambassadors for the Obama White House. He was always so good during the events oriented around children and families. And I loved those videos of him where Mrs. Obama would surprise people doing the White House tours. May he enjoy doggy heaven.

  5. minx says:

    RIP beloved Bo.

  6. BusyLizzy says:

    Read Michelle’s comment…I’m not crying, you’re crying.

The last photo in the series that Michelle shared, hit me extra hard.

I remember when they had Christmas ornaments made after Bo, and when they had that YouTube video of Michelle and Bo looking at the trees that were put up, and I think I loved all photos that Pete Souza took of him.

I’m sure Bo will be lovingly remembered by many of us, and I’m sorry for the Obamas’ loss.

Rest in peace, good boi Bo!

Reading about Bo’s death hit me hard. He shares the day with my beloved sweet boy. All pups go to heaven indeed!

TIL ‘support yachts’ are a thing that exist. Yeah.

  11. Nyro says:

Rest in Peace, sweet Bo. He was such a fixture in the Obama White House. We got the WH Christmas card one year with a lovely illustration of Bo on it.

  12. EviesMom says:

I can read any and all manner of human passing (outlier is Jennifer Weiners announcement of her moms passing yesterday made me cry as well) but Michelle’s note about BO made me sob.
Rest In Peace sweet BO. I hope Sunny is doing ok with the loss of his companion as well.

  13. Sue Denim says:

I love the photos, esp the one of him in the oval office, v presidential.

  14. Love to the Obama family, sad to hear about their Bo.
My poodle looks a lot like the late Bo;except she is all white with black patches.
Nothing out there like the unconditional love of a pet.🐶❤️

  15. Lila says:

Posting bump pics at 5 weeks? Isn’t the baby practically microscopic at that point? Pretty sure this is more likely to be a food bump than much baby taking up space.

    • Lovesitinnm says:

Yes. I mean the body has a memory and all that. But 5 weeks pg includes time before the egg is fertilised. So I think she’s been pregnant for 3 weeks.

  16. The Recluse says:

RIP Bo. Good boy. Play on that Rainbow Bridge.
In 2018 we lost my little boys Wamba, Corgi, and Dodger, Papillon-Border Collie mix, and then in 2020 we lost our Wolf dog Fonda. It was hard each time. We currently have two rescue Shepherd mixes, one of whom is obviously half Great Dane (!), and another Corgi. They make for a lively household.

And in a parting note, tax the rich! (It would be nice if we could hit them with the Eisenhower rates.)

  17. Gippy says:

We had to put down our rescue pup last month, his name was Javier. He was almost 3 when my husband adopted him, but he quickly became my dog when we started dating. He was a tripaw, having been hit by a car 5 years earlier. We chose surgery for him
then even though it was more than we really had to put towards it. He was the sweetest dog, when I was pregnant he literally wouldn’t leave my side and wouldn’t let certain people near me (it was so strange but oddly sweet, never a bite just a growl). He would’ve been 12 last week, he was a collie lab. He loved swimming I bought him a vest so I could therapy with him, I think it bought us a few years❤️We still have his sister, Sophie. She’s a total princess, purebred German shorthair pointer, prettiest coloring! She’s 11 and 90lbs I just pray she has several more years left. She’s on glucosamine (highly recommend it for any dog moms of larger or older animals) and joint meds for her knee.
