James Brolin on Barbra Streisand: We’ve literally fallen in love over lockdown

I love a man who loves a strong woman and who doesn’t need to have their ego stroked every five seconds. Such is the case for James Brolin, who has been married to Barbra Streisand for twenty-three years. James appeared on The Talk last week. He told Sheryl Underwood that while lockdown destroyed many marriages it did the reverse for him and Barbra. He and Barbra have fallen deeper in love with each other. James said that one of the keys is that they never walk out during an argument and always talk it out. We can definitely learn from these two. Below are a few more highlights via People:

“I like women who say their peace, and I’m a calming factor, and she gets me up and doing things I wouldn’t normally accomplish. It’s like a perfect situation, the two of us,” he told co-host Sheryl Underwood.

“We, for a long time, were put out by COVID. And a lot of people, their marriages haven’t gone well during these 15 months,” he continued. “We’ve literally fallen in love over this period of time, just being stuck together every day and making it work.”

Continuing, he added, “Neither one of us have ever gone out the door [after] an argument and we are good at talking things out. And 23 years is better than ever, I must say.”

The legendary singer married the Westworld actor on July 1, 1998 – two years after the pair were set up on a blind date.

“I met him at a dinner and expected a bearded mountain-man type, and he had cut off all his hair and was clean-shaven,” Streisand previously told W Magazine. “I asked him, ‘Who screwed up your hair?’ ”

“He later told me that’s when he fell in love with me,” she added. “My fella likes to hear the truth, which is unusual.”

I absolutely love James and Barbra’s relationship. I didn’t know they were set up on a blind date. And I find it so cute that Barbra explained that James fell in love with her when she asked him who messed up his hair. I love how James said that lockdown has made them grow closer and more in love. The fact that they have have decided to work through their rough patches versus giving up is a testament to their connection. James encourages Barbra to just be her wonderful self.

Anyways, I love love and I love the fact that these two met later in life. Barbra, 79, and James, 80, met twenty five years ago so they would have been 54 and 55 respectively. I wish them love and more growth in their relationship. Life is too short to not be with the one you want to be with.

So funny, this weekend I was scrolling Netflix & ‘The Mirror has two faces” was on. I adore that movie. She stars & directs & even wrote some of the music. It came out right after she started dating Brolin. I think they are so cute together. If you haven’t seen it, do!!

He’s a total hunk and seems to adore her. Good for Babs!

I also enjoyed lockdown with my husband. We did so much cooking and gardening together.

Remember him in “Hotel” all those years ago? Swoon.

Barbara had just come off her relationship with Andre Agassi when she got together with James.

As an engagement gift, a family friend gave my fiance and I what she called a “truce bell” to put a no-fault end to any argument (she claimed such bells were an Irish tradition*). I said, “aww, thanks”, and literally never thought about it again until just now, because the entire concept of a truce is completely alien to us. We argue. We LOVE to argue. He’s told me that one of the things he initially liked about me was that, on our first date, I derided a movie as “macho bullshit for men who aren’t as clever as they think they are” (try and guess the movie!) and didn’t try to walk it back after he told me it was one of his favorites.

Some people have said we sound dysfunctional. Now I can tell them on good authority that BARBRA would disagree.

*I have no idea if that was true, but an Irish friend who worked as a tour guide back in her home country once told me that virtually everything an Irish-American claims as “Irish tradition” will draw blank stares from actual Irish people.

    • Dandun says:

ive never ever heard of a truce bell! im Irish and i agree that most things Americans say are an “Irish tradition” are not

      • Cait says:

Also Irish (born, raised and living in Ireland, as opposed to Irish-American, which a lot of people on here seem to call “Irish” without the “-American”, which confuses me to no end) and never heard of it. Would’ve come in handy in my extended family!

See @Miranda I want to know which movie it is now. Hmmmm one of the Die Hards?

    • tealily says:

Is it a Quentin Tarantino? It sounds like a Quentin Tarantino.

    • Miranda says:

Die Hard and Tarantino are both good guesses! But it was…Fight Club. Ugh. That f–king movie.

Sorry to be shallow, but boy, they both look GREAT for their age! They’re a cute couple, too!

  7. Dlc says:

Aww, what a nice story for a Monday morning!

  8. jbyrdku says:

So…I get what he is trying to say, but were they not “in love” before?

    • SurelyNot says:

I think he was going for — yes, we are in love, have been for 23 years and then WHAM, over this whole pandemic thing we had time to remember and reconnect with the things that made us love each other in the first place and fell in love all over again. After that length of time, it is easy to forget some of the reasons someone was so right for you from the start.
Or he got some Viagra 🙂

    • b says:

no he is saying they are MORE in love than before

  9. Pamuk says:

They are such a beautiful couple❤️

I remember reading or watching an interview with Barbra shortly after she married James Brolin. She talked about how they’d just hop in the car and go on road trips, and she’d pack a cooler with sandwiches and drinks. It was cute and funny, because it was so different from the diva image most of us have about her. And damn, James looks mighty fine for an 80-year-old! I noticed that his voice still sounds young, too — not all reedy and raspy as often happens when you age.

  11. Jaded says:

I totally get what he’s saying and love it. Mr. Jaded appreciates my independence and strength, and I have to say I’ve loved being with him during pandemic isolation. We never argue, sometimes we have a difference of opinion, then just shrug and say “whatever” and go on with our daily life. Little hills aren’t worth dying on IMHO.
