Lupita Nyong’o wears harlequin-style dress to Tribeca premiere: checkers chic?

We’ve had a few “fashion moments” this year already, as pandemic-modified red carpets come back. The Oscars took place – and they were terrible – and that was probably the most fashion we had in about fifteen months. Currently, the pandemic-modified Tribeca Film Festival is happening and it seems to be mostly (or entirely) outdoors, with open-air screenings of all of the festival selections. Celebrities have been showing up! And that’s nice.

Last night, Lupita Nyong’o attended an open-air screening of her film Queen of Glory, as part of the Tribeca Film Festival. It was directed by Nana Mensah, who is Ghanian-American. This was the first “red carpet premiere” Lupita has attended in more than a year! Although I looked through the photo archives and Lupita did attend a Louis Vuitton event back in March, so she has been out and about in pandemic times, just sparingly. For her big return, Lupita wore this “harlequin-style” dress, the ID for which I haven’t found yet. It’s like… chess board chic. Checkers vibez. If I’m being honest, I’m not in love with the dress, but I am loving the return to fashion! Her makeup is legitimately stunning though – I love when she adds a bold or subtle color to her lips.

While not a big fan of “tiered” skirts, I think she looks adorable! It’s fun, and hits the 3 “Cs” for summer: cute, cool, and looks comfortable! I really like the hat, too. I’d put this in the win column 😊

Not crazy about dress either butI think it would work in fall or winter minus the hat. If either the top or bottom is solid black, it would wow. It’s too much for a hot day.

I think I would love it in a different color/pattern because the shape is lovely. Agree re makeup, gorgeous

  4. ME says:

She always looks good. I love the cut and fit of the dress. I would rather wear it in one solid color though but still it looks amazing on her.

  5. Dierski says:

I love this on her!! Not many could pull off such a big/bold pattern, but she makes it look easy.

  6. Reece says:

I love it! She can pull it off whereas I’d look like a parquet floor in it.

I might find this a bit twee on anyone else, but Lupita can pull off big looks. The bright, dangly earrings, the strong lip color, the big checks, and the hat, all combine to give her a bit of a 1990s vibe. I like it!

  8. Lucy2 says:

She always looks amazing, pretty much no matter what she wears!

I think changing the neckline would make a huge difference. It wouldn’t even have to be a deep scoop. If it hit at her collarbone instead of her neck, there would be a little more balance with those big checks. But she still looks good!

I love everything about this – from the hat to the jacket to the skirt. Lupita looks amazing and carefree in it, too.

It works and I’m into it!

  12. MaryContrary says:

She looks like she wandered into Janelle Monae’s closet-which, to be fair, isn’t a bad thing.

  13. Miss Flower says:

She must have dropped her juggling balls.

  14. Mrs.Krabapple says:

She can wear anything and make it look good.

  15. teecee says:

This is not her dress. Maybe Janelle Monae or Helena Bonham Carter could pull it off (for different reasons), but this looks bad on her.

    She’s so glam.
