Margot Robbie on her 30s: ‘Now I finally feel like it’s OK to… sit still?’

Margot Robbie can pull off any hair color, right? I used to think she should just stick to blonde, but no – she’s stunning as a caramel-brunette on this British Vogue cover. Margot is promoting The Suicide Squad, which is out on August 6th. She was interviewed at her LA home, but she lives wherever – I think she has a crash pad in London and somewhere in Europe, plus she still has family in Australia. She’s happily married to Tom Ackerley, her producing partner on LuckyChap (their production company) and she’s only 31 years old. She’s fashioned such an interesting career for herself as an actress/producer, and she confesses in this interview that of course she wants to try directing. Some highlights:

She loves working on the Suicide Squad movies: “Those scenes where everything’s exploding around you, and you make it just in time, those massive epic war hero runs? Those movie moments? Girls never get those. Girls never get those.”

Her migraines: “I could be in a pitch black room and if someone lit a match I’d be, like, blinded. So being on set is the worst place – I take my medication, sit in the trailer and ask them to do my make-up in the dark.”

Working on Aussie soap opera Neighbours as a teen: “But I’d been there for months before I realised that nobody else had other jobs on the side.” She was making sandwiches in Subway at the time. “And I was like, ‘You’re doing acting full-time? That’s possible? OK, wicked, I’m going to do that.’ It was an epiphany.”

The first Suicide Squad movie: “It’s just like a sleepover! There are explosions and guns firing. And even though they’re blanks, your body starts reacting as if it’s real, your adrenaline’s through the roof.” At home at night she often finds it hard to sleep: “Because, well, my body thinks it’s just been in a war zone.”

She finds Harley Quinn hard to shake: “Harley sticks around. Even on a weekend when I’m out with friends, sometimes she pops up and I’ll be like, ‘Right then, I’m gonna put a lid on that.’”

She wants more women in action films: “From a business or statistical standpoint, those are the high-paying jobs. So I really want to advocate for women writing big blockbuster action films. And then also, the perception that women aren’t interested in action is ridiculous. Plus, they’re really, really fun.”

She’s considering slowing down. “I don’t know if it’s because I’m in my thirties now, or because life took… a very strange turn. Over Covid, I was home for longer than I’ve ever stayed anywhere. I’ve been moving at a million miles an hour for as long as I can remember.” What’s that like? “It can feel a little scary sometimes. But now I finally feel like it’s OK to… sit still? Or even sit this one out. That’s a feeling I haven’t had before.”

She makes friends with everyone on set: “Often people ask, ‘What was it like working with so-and-so?’, you know, a fellow actor. And I’m like, ‘Well, I worked with 300 people on this movie. Two of them were actors.’”

She was offered the lead in Promising Young Woman, but decided to just produce the film: “I have a real aversion to being put in a box. The minute someone sums me up in two words… I want to show them I’m the exact opposite. As soon as you have some success in one type of role, people want you to keep doing that thing. Which I think would just be… boring.”

I do think that she’s really like this – “Well, I worked with 300 people on this movie. Two of them were actors.” It comes across as kind of performatively “cool girl,” but as I said, I think she’s genuinely like that. She fell in love with Ackerley when he was the third assistant director. She parties with the crew on her films. She goes on road trips and checks out music festivals with non-famous people. Just because Hollywood decided that she’s a bombshell doesn’t mean she acts that way. It sounds like the pandemic changed her though, with the combination of being in her 30s now. It is okay to slow down! It’s okay to sit out some of this stuff.

Her hair (with new bangs) is gorgeous, I think it’s still blonde though, I wouldn’t call that brunette at least not in those photos

    • manda says:

I was going to say that, too, about the color. I would call that dark blonde. I also love the style! I wish I could pull off these kinds of bangs, but I don’t think I could

      • Sankay says:

I thought they were having her cosplay as Sharon Tate.

      • Delphine says:

You should try it, it’s a great style to try out. If you don’t like it the bangs grow out into layers since they’re tapered down the sides of your face. This is pretty much my exact hairstyle but mine is strawberry blonde. I’ve been cutting it the same way for 10 years. Basically like Marianne Faithfull when she wore the full black lace bodysuit.

    • milliemollie says:

      Yes, it’s still blonde.

  2. local russian hill says:

love the first cover shot and yes her hair color is gorgeous. 1970s styling a bit. and i enjoy the british and european fashion magazines so much more; vogue, bazaar, elle. they’re still trying to sell you something but they’re so much more creative than a lot of the american varietals.

  3. Boxy Lady says:

She really looks like she stepped out of the 1960s or the early 70s.

  4. Ladiabla says:

That hair color/style looks really good on her. She does give off a good vibe in interviews from what I’ve seen, but I’ve never seen any of the suicide squad movies. I’m just like ‘meh’. Her husband on the other hand, is FINE. Good going there girl. I mean, she is Margot Robbie so I get it, but she’s got a good picker (in the looks dept at least). Still haven’t seen Promising Young Woman yet, but I will watch that.

  5. Merricat says:

My guess is any film crew is more fun than most of the talent.
Also, I love the dark honey and caramel tones of her hair in these photos. I almost didn’t recognize her.

  6. girl_ninja says:

She really is a beauty. But really she is such a great talent. I hope she continues to grow and do good work.

  7. Bettyrose says:

She won me over as Tonya Harding. I was always a Tonya Harding fan and while I wouldn’t have thought to cast a tall slender Australian in the role, she nailed it and did so with sensitivity to the subject matter. Also, her cameo in The Big Short was brilliant. I haven’t gotten into Harley Quinn and Suicide Squad but I need to.

  8. Thirtynine says:

I really like her work ethic and her drive to achieve her goals, and the way she won’t let herself get pigeon-holed into other peoples expectations because of her looks or experiences. I feel the the 60’s and 70’s vibe in the photos, too.

  9. Lena says:

I’ve heard action films are fun to make but I can’t stand all the explosions so it’s got to have a lot more going for it for me to watch it, and I’ve heard suicide squad doesn’t have much else so I’ll pass. I was surprised to learn she produced promising young woman but didn’t play the lead. Shows how so successful an actor she is that she could pass on a really good role just because she knows how stereotypical the role would be for her. Most actresses can’t pass up on roles that maybe are stereotypical.

  10. Shawna says:

Very Brigitte Bardot! That could be an interesting movie…hmmmm.

  11. Jayna says:

I admire her. Love the hairstyle on the cover.

  12. Mimi says:

I preordered a ticket for the suicide squad for Friday I’m so excited! I love her as Harley Quinn and I’ve never gone to a movie alone but I’m excited. The pandemic and not being able to go to the movies has rly made me appreciate it more.

  13. manta says:

She gives Carol Alt vibes on these pictures.
And she only discovered on Neighbours that actors could live without a side job?
Overplaying a little bit the naïve ingénue part maybe?

  14. February-Pisces says:

I love her caramel hair, I would love that hair colour, but I would probably have to bleach it a few times first. Margot looks great, I recently watched her in the Tarantino film and she was great as Sharon Tate. This look is probably inspired by Tate a little bit.

But I do wonder about her age, I always thought she was about 5 years older than she is, but I dunno.

    • Lara says:

There are literally pictures of her yearbook all over the internet. She is exactly as old as she says she is.

  15. Chocolate cake says:

I envy that stillness. I’m 29 & I feel like I’ll be anxious till I die. I long to be still & confident in myself, my work etc. It sucks to still be seeking approval at this age.
    Also she’s an amazing actress.

    • taris says:

29 is such a weird age … i’ve always been anxious (as a cancer), but rn i truly feel downright psychotic sometimes … idk

      • taris says:

… and margot seems cool. like, one of the few celebs out there who doesn’t seem full of shit.

  16. Lara says:

She does love music festivals. She especially loves being the white girl at a music festival walking around in indigenous headdresses. She also loves having “cowboys and Indians” parties (there are several pictures of this). What is it with white Australians?

    • Lex says:

Like… far more white Americans do this, and should even more so know better as it’s relevant to their culture.. soooo….. yeah

USA is still bizarrely full of references to ‘Indians’… current tv shows even! What gives?

      • Ange says:

Exactly. Like Aussies wouldn’t have ‘indigenous Australian parties’ as it’s a no-go so I guess it’s just a matter of international awareness.

      • AbominableSnowPickle says:

It’s kind of a generational thing, and also reeally depends on the group and their location. But older Native American folks tend to prefer to refer to themselves as Indians, and the younger generations tend to adopt prefer Native American, Indigenous American, etc. Caveat: I live near a rather large reservation, but I’m decidedly not Native American, I’m not trying to speak *for* anyone here. Just trying to add a little context.

  17. K says:

She put in a huge effort to produce “I, Tonya” on top of starring in it. She seems truly hard-working, witty, happy to be making films and frankly nicer than many “famously beautiful” people come off. I think she wants and deserves a long career in filmmaking.

  18. Silver says:

She actually is* like that. I worked on Suicide Squad and she was lovely to everyone and she was* buddies with everyone. And if Ackerley was 3rd AD when they fell in love it speaks volumes because 3rd ADs probably get paid less than all departments on the shooting crew so he was a regular bloke with a less than film average salary and just must’ve been a fantastic human as is she.
