Prince Harry’s remaining possessions in Frogmore Cottage were put in storage

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attend an event at Millennium Point to celebrate International Women's Day in Birmingham on 8th March 2018

When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left Dusty Saltine Island in 2020, they of course left Frogmore Cottage behind, which caused a great deal of consternation and idiocy from the British press. For months on end, the media demanded that Harry and Meghan “pay back” the renovation costs on Frogmore. And when the Sussexes did just that, the media then demanded that Harry come back and live at Frogmore just so it wouldn’t sit there vacant and sad. Little did anyone know (at the time) that the Sussexes were making a deal with Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank to allow E&J to sublet the property. No one actually knows what kind of deal was made or if E&J are paying to rent the property, but they’re still living there currently. And it seems like it’s only now that the final pieces of the Sussexes’ old Frogmore life have been put into storage?

Windsor Castle staff cleared out Prince Harry’s personal possessions from Frogmore Cottage and put them in storage – just days after his recent visit to the UK, reports claim. The Duke of Sussex flew back to Britain at the start of the month for the unveiling of his mother’s statue before returning to wife Meghan and children Archie and Lilibet in California.

Since then, however, many of his belongings, including framed pictures, have been boxed up and left at the nearby castle, amid speculation the couple will never return to the cottage. The rental deal runs out next April, and royal sources say Harry’s decision to sign a four-book agreement in which he’ll fully lift the lid on his experiences make it ‘impossible to conceive’ that they will return for the Platinum Jubilee in 2022. The cottage is now occupied by the Prince’s cousin, Eugenie, her husband Jack and their son, August, while Harry’s possessions are expected to be shipped to his £11m mansion in Montecito.

An insider told the Sun: ‘Staff from Windsor Castle were in Frogmore just days after Harry flew back to California after the statue unveiling. They cleared out his personal possessions such as framed pictures he had left behind in his and Meghan’s old bedroom. Harry had been staying in one end of the cottage, separated from Eugenie and her family. He stayed in his and Meghan’s old bedroom which was left largely untouched since he was last there.’

[From The Daily Mail]

They’re trying to make this sound like it has something to do with Harry’s memoir, but my guess is that Eugenie and Jack have already worked something out with the Sussexes, and E&J plan on staying there after the Sussexes’ “lease” is done. Meaning, Harry and Meghan’s remaining stuff was already packed up by Eugenie and Jack anyway, and when Harry was there, Eugenie was like “so what should we put in storage and what do you want to take back to Montecito?” The larger point is that the Sussexes are not coming back. They were never coming back. And I would imagine that the stuff they left behind was not that important to them.

Of course they’re not and GOOD FOR THEM.

  2. Jegede says:

    Yaassss!💃💃
    Be gone Frogswamp.😛

Don’t think I ever heard/read of a ‘wedding gift’, bring so much grief to the recipients.

  3. MsIam says:

Gee what a novel concept! When you move out of a house you take your stuff with you! imagine that!

  4. Lila says:

The RRs sound like the crazy ex who insists you meet up to return your stuff, only for it to turn out to be a broken cd and a candy wrapper.

And I love that no one knows the exact details of the sublet. Guess we know one family that isn’t leaking…

    • KW says:

probably because Poppa Pedo convinced his mummy to let them have it for free. that’s why there aren’t leaks because Eugenie, a non working royal, is living rent free!!!!

    • Yvette says:

@Lila … Exactly. And didn’t we hear/read all this before when Jack and Eugenie first moved into Frogmore cottage, that a truck pulled up in the middle of the night and removed all of Harry and Meghan’s belongings? I wish these people would get their stories right.

  5. Becks1 says:

So man and woman who buy gorgeous mansion in gorgeous area of California have no plans to return permanently to live in their cottage in the UK where the paparazzi and family can spy on them, and so had their last remaining personal items packed away so the entirety of the house could be used by the renters??

Please, someone make it make sense!!

(honestly my guess is that Harry spent time there in June figuring out what went on to Montecito, what could be packed away, and what they just didn’t want at all anymore. Maybe Eugenie and Jack wanted the extra space or something, maybe H&M are just going to stay with friends if and when they come back to the UK, maybe they’ll buy a place in London, who knows.)

  6. Amy Bee says:

But according to this same royal correspondent all of Harry and Meghan’s belongings were packed up and shipped to California last year just before Eugenie moved in. Now he’s saying Harry’s personal items including framed pictures have been put in storage. Wouldn’t Harry taken his personal belongings with him when he left in March 2020? Why would he leave framed pictures behind? I think this guy just needed a story for the Sun so he reworked last year’s story.

    • lunchcoma says:

I suspect “framed pictures” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. These aren’t necessarily pictures of Archie, and I suspect it would have been mentioned if they were.

I’m going to bet that these are random pictures of the grounds and that they were left because Harry doesn’t care about them, because Meghan is a relatively normal person who probably pauses before shipping random crap overseas, because they didn’t want the house to look completely bare when there was still the possibility they might come back there for occasional visits.

      • Amy Bee says:

@Lunchcoma: You’re right. The framed pictures could be some borrowed by the Queens collection which would make sense. These would have to be sent back to storage. I believe the original story that all of their belongings including furniture were to shipped to California months ago. I think during the course of buying their house they decided that they weren’t going to live in Frogmore anymore hence they offered it to Eugenie.

  7. Gm says:

M/H got ripped off paying millions to redo a place they don’t own. How long is their lease on it and how much do they pay for the lease?

    • Chrissy (The Original) says:

No kidding. Who would be thrilled to accept a “wedding gift” that consisted of a dilapitated former servants quarters with water damage and in need of over a million dollars worth of repairs to make it livable? Sheesh. I guess the security of the location made it somewhat acceptable though.

      • Lulu says:

Originally, Harry and Meghan didn’t have plans to live at that Frogmore Cottage. They were living quietly at their Cotswold home, until Splash News and Picture Agency took aerial photographs of their Cotswolds home. Their home location exposed to the media and obsessive royalist fans caused the couple to accept that fixer-upper Frogmore Cottage temporarily. The main selling point with Frogmore Cottage was its location and security.
The couple’s lovely current Montecito home offers them not only a family-friendly location but enough space to grow their family alongside hired private security.

  8. lunchcoma says:

Sounds like they left some decorative items so the house wouldn’t look strange and bare immediately after their departure. Now that it’s clear they’re never coming back, even for vacations, that stuff might as well be put in storage. I’m sure the framed pictures aren’t personal photographs or anything.

  9. equality says:

I imagine Harry had plenty of time while he was in quarantine to sort through and pack things. I wonder if Eugenie and Jack will try to get a lease on Frogmore.

  10. Abena Asantewaa says:

So they actually paid $3m for a gift meant for them from the queen, and gave the gift back to her in less than 2yrs! , but did not get their money back for the renovations of then dilapidated house; that’s a dodgy deal

  11. Sunday says:

I could’ve sworn that The Discourse™ re: paying back the £2.4 million started before they announced they were stepping back, not after? Like as soon as that 2.4 figure started floating around the tabloids were up in arms, no?

    • Amy Bee says:

Yes it was a few months after Archie was born.

    • Becks1 says:

It started almost as soon as it was announced they were moving there and it had to be renovated – I don’t think it was specifically “they need to pay it back” from the start but there were lots of cries of “taxpayer money!!!!” and “why isn’t KP good enough for them!!!!!” (overlooking the fact that redoing the place in KP that could have been available would have been even more expensive) and “Meghan won’t let people park there!!!!” And then I think when they didn’t announce the godparents maybe was when it tipped over to “pay it back!!!”

  12. Jay says:

For some reason now I’m picturing the queen arriving on the last day of the lease and scrutinizing the walls for dents and holes, hoping she gets to keep the security deposit Harry and Meghan put down.

  13. Likeyoucare says:

This story is almost believable until i read windsor castle staff help to move the stuff.
What the heck H&M wouldnt allow anyone from that gutter rats place touch their stuffs.

  14. Jais says:

I know it’s invasive but I’m dying to see what frogmore cottage looks like inside. Like after all the renovations to this old house, how does it look inside? Feel like a lot of that money was just to make it livable but were they able to get a sweet kitchen for Meghan? What does it lol like inside??? Imagine we will never know, but for some reason, I really want to see!

    • Snuffles says:

      @jais

Same and agreed. I think the bulk of that money was just to get the property up to code. All they decor came out of Harry and Meghan’s pockets.

    • Snuffles says:

      @jais

Just wanted to add that I LIVE for home and apartment tours. It doesn’t even need to be a rich or famous person. I’ll watch if you’re just a regular Joe with good taste who’s creative and thrifty. I love watching to get ideas and inspiration.

      • Voominvava says:

Me too, I love seeing inside other people’s homes . I love going on walks just as it’s getting dark because people haven’t closed their curtains or blinds yet and I can see inside. I’m looking at the decor and furniture placement and house layouts, honest! Lol

    • Becks1 says:

Eugenie posts some pics on her IG sometimes of August and you can get a glimpse of the interior, it looks appallingly normal, LOL. (of course those interior pics could always be somewhere else.)

I am intrigued by the royal houses though. Like how are Anmer and KP decorated once you’re outside the formal sitting areas and such? Is it all that formal furniture and fussy curtains and formal paintings?

      • Jais says:

Thx snuffles and becks1. Glad I’m not the only one. On that topic, I also wonder about bagshot and these places that have so many rooms. Knowing the upkeep cost and the actual # of peeps living there, how many rooms do you think are strait up just empty? I wonder if some don’t even have furniture or are used for storage.

  15. Snuffles says:

I’m taking this as an indication that they have no intention of using Frogmore Cottage for future visits. I wouldn’t if I were them. I’d make other, more private and secure accommodations from now on that are completely outside The Firm’s purview.

    • L84Tea says:

I agree. If and when either of them ever return to the UK for any reason, royal related or not, they should stay elsewhere.

  16. Sofia says:

I imagine they’ll just do hotels every time they come over now. I maintain that if there wasn’t a pandemic, they would be over a lot more but also a lot has happened in the last 1.5 years so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve decided to do cool down on those and only visit during a major event. But we’ll have to see from next year onwards I suppose.

Edit: they could buy a home I suppose but maintaining 2 homes can get expensive on top of the constant security both properties will need even if they’re not there.

    • Amy Bee says:

Probably not major events because those will give licence to the media to intrude into their lives. But I can see them making unannounced visits to the UK, maybe once a year to meet people from their patronages. I can even see them changing their roles with those patronages. Instead of being a patron, forming partnerships between those charities and Archewell so they could be more involved and they won’t have to make annual visits to the UK.

    • PrincessK says:

I expect the Sussexes and their children to visit the U.K. before the end of this year.

      • Feeshalori says:

I think if the Delta variant still rages that won’t happen, especially with the children.

  17. Over it says:

That engagement picture of them is everything. So so beautiful. I can’t imagine why Harry and Meghan won’t want to return to a pit of demons.
I am so glad that British media keeps telling me how much Harry and Meghan house that they paid for with the money they work for cost. I mean let me repeat that. The house they bought with the money they make while having jobs.
Now if we could just get the rest of the monarchy to actually work for a living and pay their own way like Harry and Meghan, then having a British monarchy might be something to consider keeping. Unfortunately they are a bunch of grifters who like to sponge off the people while living large and doing absolutely no work.
I think if they ever come back, they will stay somewhere else. That family is too toxic to be around. Meghan and Harry especially Meghan must find thxt house triggering. Every time I remember what they put her through while pregnant and a new mom, I see red all over again

  18. Margaret says:

As I recalled the queen offered them the use of picture from her collection. On completion of the renovations. I will bet those are the pictures removed.

I wish you wouldn’t use the term saltine which is included in the racial slur database because it is a racial slur

    • Krystina says:

      LOLLLLLLLL
Saltine describes the whole Island, not an individual person, lol
What is with white people wanting to be victims so badly?

  21. DuchessL says:

Details like the stuff is from their bedroom, it’s going to storage in a castle close the cottage is just screaming to me: please someone can you please find the stuff go through it and leak it to the press pleeeeeeease before them ship it out.

  22. Over it says:

I would ask the queen to cut me a cheque on behalf of her favorite son for letting his daughter and her family live in the house I paid for rent free. Then her and I would be all squared away.

  23. jferber says:

I’m surprised they didn’t burn the Sussexes’ possessions in the front yard. Isn’t that how classy people do it, like those aristos?

  24. Catherine says:

All the talk about the cost of Frogmore started in June 2019 when the sovereign grant came out and detailed the cost of the renovation. There was a statement that the costs were primarily because the house was in such disrepair that things like plumbing/electrical has to be completely replaced. The tabloids ignored that because they were angry about the Sussexes not doing the standing on the steps photo op when Archie was born and used the cost as a weapon against them. If I recall correctly this is like the third their stuff has been moved out they’re never coming back story. There were stories that Queen did gift them artwork from the royal collection for the cottage that would have been returned. But this story just seems like a whole lot of drama to me. Note how they said Harry’s personal belongings like he lived there by himself. They had to abandon the Harry is desperate to reconcile stories so now they are going with the he’s completely turning his back on the UK angle.

  25. BnlurNforever says:

Can’t wait to never hear about that place in connection with Harry and Meghan again, it has been nothing but trouble since the beginning but Harry and Meghan were cornered. The place they leased was intruded upon and they had to give up the lease and stay within the confines of KP. The expected place for them to live was occupied by the Glouceschere (sp) and posed a no win problem. If they took it over, distractors would have screamed their heads off about them forcing out an elderly couple who had been there forever. They’ve since moved out anyway to no fanfare. They could have remained in the dingy little cottage they were in, but stuck in KP under the surveillance of EYES, or they could sought Frogmore cottage, which was on the schedule for refurbishment. People think that Frogmore cottage was offered to them, but I’ve always thought, they requested it out of whatever options they presented with because it was already scheduled for refurbishment and it wasn’t lavish. I think they attempted to avoid all the usual criticism by choosing Frogmore, but were unsuccessful. Meghan said she didn’t think it would be easy, but she thought it would be fair. She thought that if she worked hard and were impactful, chose a dwelling that was modest and scheduled to be repaired anyway and pay for all interior cost themselves, they wouldn’t receive criticism. Meghan didn’t know yet that short of her being stoned to death in the center of town, nothing would satisfy.

  26. Alexandria says:

Awful gift. There may be a lot of misery from this place and while in this place. For fengshui reasons they are right not to renew their lease and go far away from there. As for this sorry story, whatever. They’re done Daily Fail. Why don’t you stop writing about them. Oh that’s right, you know why.

  27. GRUEY says:

All I can say is that paying “back” the frogmore renovations was one of the classiest fuck you’s and truly made me love the Sussexes more than I already thought I could. Like, what a classy way to tell the British press to shove their whining up their asses, show off fuck you money, and show everyone you are done-done with that dusty island.

True story: I was in a LDR with Mr. Wrong and I broke up with him when he came to visit me (I was in grad school). I handed him the keys to the car we had bought together (that I had with me at my Midwestern grad school) and informed him he was free to take the car and drive it back to the east coast and not to contact me cuz I didn’t give a crap about my half of the money. I know some people might think it was foolish of me to give up the money, like they wish the Sussexes hadn’t paid for frogmore, but I guarantee to power to just cut the shit is much more enjoyable.

    • lunchcoma says:

My sponsor sometimes says that there are times when the cheapest way to pay for things is with money. I suspect that Harry and Meghan both have enough experience with people who are manipulative about money to know that too.

  28. Curious says:

whatever H/M left in Frogmore cottage was not their personal things. all pics of their son and if they bought any paintings and such was already shipped when they moved to canada.if the queen lend them personal paintings and such. they took it back and put it in storage. they could have just let it be since harry cousin is living there.i think everything H/M bought they already took it with them. maybe leaving some furniture they don’t need and gave it to Eugenie.H/M didn’t live at Frogmore cottage for long to have any emotional ties for that place.

  29. Athena says:

After all the nonsense with Frogmore I knew Meghan would never want to live in it again. It would just be full of negative energy.

I wonder if the Queen secretly gave them back the money. She should given it’s her property

  30. Sunnyvale says:

I’ve been saying it since we heard of their exit, they’re definitely buying a second property either in France or Italy(likely a chateau with side business;vineyard). Come next year when the effects of brexit +pandemic become even more visible & H&M come n leave for trooping(& taking their star power) it’ll show how doomed little England is. The royals must be distraught knowing they effectively freed their biggest assets to go build their own empire without their input or control😂
