Reports: John Edwards had multiple affairs & Elizabeth Edwards is crazy

House Judiciary Committee investigates Healthcare reform cost in Washington
We’ve been getting information from Andrew Young’s book proposal in drips and drabs for the past few months. Young is the former John Edwards campaign staffer who fell on his sword for Edwards, and claimed paternity of Rielle Hunter’s daughter – when everyone pretty much assumed John Edwards is the father. Young also got paid off in a big way – but now he’s trying to sell his story about what really happened between John, Elizabeth and Rielle. Previously, we’ve heard about John’s desire to move Rielle and her daughter closer to him, to his North Carolina neighborhood. We’ve also heard that John proposed to Rielle, and promised her a wedding in New York.

The new scandal (still part of Andrew Young’s continuing revelations) is that Rielle Hunter wasn’t the only woman John had an affair with. Shocking! Not really. That man seems as sleazy as they come. According to the National Enquirer, Young told the grand jury investigating Edwards that “Edwards had affairs with several other women along the campaign trail besides better known mistress Hunter.” Oh, but that’s not even the end of this week’s revelations. NYDN’s Rush & Malloy also have some additional scoops on Elizabeth Edwards, and how (allegedly) crazy she is with the scope of the scandal:

Former presidential candidate John Edwards is said to be ready to admit that he fathered a love child. But Hades may have a skating rink before his wife, Elizabeth, signs off on such a confession.

As a grand jury in North Carolina considers whether Edwards misused campaign funds to cover up the scandal, Elizabeth still can’t abide his former mistress, Rielle Hunter.

Word is Elizabeth vehemently opposed the plan, now in place, for Hunter and daughter Quinn to move from New Jersey to Wilmington, N.C., where the Edwardses have a beach house.

For months now, Elizabeth, who is said to be talking to a divorce lawyer, also has been sniping at Hunter – painting her as a blackmailing gold digger – in blog comments where she uses the pseudonym “Cherubim,” according to a source who knows Elizabeth.

Though “Cherubim” has recently described herself as an African-American woman, the source insists, “It’s Elizabeth. She’s used ‘cherubim’ as a password. Look at the gravestone of their son Wade: It’s an angel holding a boy.”

“Cherubim” has also heaped scorn on estranged Edwards aide Andrew Young, who is working on a book in which he’s due to reveal that Edwards and wealthy supporters paid him to claim that he fathered Quinn.

In a proposal for the book, Young contends that Elizabeth blamed him for helping her husband carry on the affair and forced Young to quit the campaign. He also alleges that Elizabeth left taunting messages on his family’s answering machine – telling his wife, Cheri, that Rielle supposedly had slept with Young and that she was likely to again.

Along with claiming that Edwards and Hunter made a sex tape, the proposal alleges:
* Edwards had had affairs with other women on the campaign trail.
* When Edwards was forced to call off a birthday date with Hunter because he found out that Elizabeth’s cancer had returned, an unsympathetic Hunter screamed at him.
* After learning of the affair, Elizabeth made John sleep in their barn though she would wake him up with accusatory rants.
* Hunter relied on a California psychic named Bob to tell her where to live and what to do.
* Edwards had little affection for John Kerry – once comparing him to Richie Rich – but changed his tune when the Democratic presidential nominee tapped him as his running mate.
* Ted Kennedy once told Young about a would-be assassin who managed to get into his Senate office because one of his bodyguards was having a gay liaison with one of his top aides.

Elizabeth’s publicist and lawyers for John Edwards and Hunter declined comment.

[From Rush & Malloy]

I honestly don’t know about all of the other stuff – yes, I’ll buy that John cheated on Elizabeth multiple times, with multiple women. I doubt the campaign trail was even the first time he strayed. But I find the whole “Cherubim” story sketchy as all hell. I want to believe that Elizabeth is a lot classier than that. But I’ve been disappointed before. Elizabeth seemed to lay the overwhelming bulk of the blame for the affair on Rielle’s shoulders, describing Rielle as “pathetic” while giving John a pass for the most part in her last book. I also feel pretty strongly that Elizabeth has been lying about the paternity test in several of her latest interviews. Who knows?

    man, what a mess.

  2. Firestarter says:

Sorry, sick or not, Elizabeth Edwards is an idiot. Yeah, blame the other woman, but don’t blame your lying, cheating, dishonest husband.

She calls Rielle pathetic, well this woman needs to take a LONG look in the mirror. What is more pathtic than Rielle, is this woman’s attempts to still clear her husband of any and all responsibility!

  3. boo says:

John and Elizabeth are being douche bags. We all know you’re not supposed to mess around with married people but Reille is starting to look like the responsible adult in this mess compared to John and Elizabeth.

There is a baby involved!!!!! Why don’t they all shut the eff up and get on with their lives the way they are configured right now and think about what is best for the kids.

  4. Leticia says:

I agree with the previous posters.

Usually I am 100% behind the wife, esp one with terminal illness. But Rielle Hunter is starting to look like the sane, classy one of this bunch.

And John Edwards is so phony. I hope that his future in politics is permanently disabled. Sadly, there will always be people who would vote for him no matter what.

  5. Lantana says:

I agree with anna. What a mess. I really can’t come up with any possibility of a happy ending…maybe John gets hit by a bus and Elizabeth collects all the insurance and out of the goodness of her heart gives Rielle enough money to raise her husband’s love child, and then spends at least the short remaining time she has at peace. And that really doesn’t strike me as ‘happy’.

  6. katie says:

i agree you need to blame the husband for cheating. but WHY would a woman want to get involved with a married man? it is not a single womans responsibility to check to see if a man is married or avoid him if he is, but, really, why get involved? if he cheats on his wife, he will cheat on you. people need to take some ownership here. also, unless you have been in that situation, you really dont know how you would react. why should elizabeth change her lifestyle bc of her husband?

  7. maddie says:

Hey people think about this maybe she stayed married to this puss bag knowing that with her cancer, she could control who was introduced to her kids, and knowing that he would spend the time with his kids under one roof.

If she had divorced him, he would not spend any time with the kids but with his whores.

  8. AlaskaJoey says:

No one’s asking the important question here:

What the hell does Ted Kennedy have to do with this????

LOL! Seriously, that last sentence about potential assassins (I’m assuming of Kennedy, not Edwards) just threw me. Unless Elizabeth hired them?

  9. Smith says:

It takes a lot for someone who had to publically battle cancer, hold her head high through a continued betrayal by a spouse, and deal with the loss of a child to lose my sympathy and support.

Elizabeth Edwards has managed to do just that.

She is world-class at playing the victim. I’m sorry but we all share a part in the things that happen in our life, there’s no getting around that fact. She also came across as a shill in pearls as she hawked her book and very personal marriage problems to anyone who would listen. I can imagine her leaving volatile messages on many an answering machine – I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a boiled puppy or two we’ve yet to hear about. Never underestimate the power of the crazy eyes …

  10. Iggles says:

Smith – You hit the nail on the head. I’ve been saying it for months, this woman is shady as heck!

The real victims in this story are the kids, especially that baby. All the adults are narcissistic brats.

  11. Mandy says:

Americans are very forgiving people, and I think Edwards could’ve retained some respectability if he’d just stepped up and said, “I fathered a child with my mistress, and it was not the first time I was unfaithful to my wife. I’m sorry for making a difficult time worse, and I want some private time to sort this out with my family.” Instead, he throws a staffer to the wolves. We should all be grateful that such a cowardly man never made it to the White House.

  12. Just a Poster says:

Well said everyone, very well said.

  13. Judy says:

I believed in John Edwards, believed he cherished his terminally ill wife, and was sorely disappointed to hear he cheated on his wife with Rielle Hunter. Now, I’m reading he had numerous affairs and have to say I believe it. I’m not impressed with the way Elizabeth has handled this situation but can understand her fury. And I want my campaign contribution BACK!

  14. Embee says:

I haven’t seen interviews w/Elizabeth Edwards but nothing of Andrew Young’s account of her behavior turns my stomach.

If my husband fathered a child with someone else, possibly funding the affair in such a way as to bring our family into legal peril then you can bet your ass I’d have him sleeping in the barn. And I can imagine going out there to confront him at 3 am with the thoughts that woke me and kept me from sleeping. That’s just a sane response to a crazy situation.

As for being angry with the guy who helped [try] to cover the affair? Yeah, I’d be pissed at him, too. Calling his house and making his wife paranoid is not classy at all, but really, how much can Elizabeth take? She’s going to do some embarassing things and she should get a pass or two. I don’t expect her to carry herself with unwavering dignity while everyone around her acts like sleazebags!

As for Ms. Hunter, I can hardly say support the contention that she has carried herself with class. I don’t hate her–it is very possible she made a mistake that she regrets. Still, she is hardly in a position comparable to Mrs. Edwards. She had nothing to lose and everything to gain in conducting an affair with a rich politician. She has yet to lose anything to this scandal other than her reputation (which is a natural result of her choices), and so her silence is hardly a testament to her ddignity. More like a good strategy.

  15. What evs says:

I used to love John Edwards. I thought he would be the perfect most likely too win presidential candidate when the race was starting. But gosh, what a huge dissapointment. I feel really bad for Elizabeths’s children. It can’t be easy dealing with some new half sibling and the realization that their dad is a careless, thoughtless scumbag.

  16. minx says:

I find it endlessly amusing how Americans get obsessed and distracted by their politicians'(or anyone famous for that matter) sex lives. It’s really the only thing that matters to them.. as if other issues didn’t exist. Only in the U.S. a poltician would have his career ruined because he had an affair or let some fat chick suck on his… Sheesh.

  17. Ron says:

Can you imagine if this guy had been elected? Yikes! It must be one of Rush and Glen’s wet dreams.

  18. sillypeople says:

    politics are dirty

  19. KateKap says:

This really is one of those situations where “who gives a flying fu(k” comes in handy

  20. raven says:

I’m with Embee on this. As someone who lost one friend to cancer and had another one diagnosed with stage IV in the same week, I can tell you that cancer treatment does take its toll on people’s thoughts, feelings and treatment of others. But any of you who want to bitch about Elizabeth Edwards, I hope you get to trade places with her.

  21. fizXgirl314 says:

wtf? I could not even follow this story… that’s how messy it all sounds :/

  22. Victoria says:

HUnter was smart to get pregnant from him. She was getting old. He should have known…but, like Jude Law, they were not thinking and now, look at what happens…

  23. Mairead says:

I’ve no more interest in this than I have in inter-provincial table-tennis finals in China, but from what I’ve read, I totally agree with Mandy’s and comment. They all seem well-met, it’s likely that none of them are shining examples of humanity even in less fractious circumstances.

People’s se*ual shenanigans (unless illegal) are of absolutely no consequence to anyone outside of the people immediately involved. It has absolutely no bearing on someone’s economic, industrial, educational, medical, military or foreign policies. It just doesn’t.

What does have an impact how they will do their job on behalf of the public is how prone they are to corruption – in this case potentially using campaign funds and throwing a colleague under the bus. That is corruption and must not be tolerated in politics.

@ Minx – the same thing would happen in the UK, the same thing with coming out as gay. Which is ludicrous.
The one thing I will give the Irish electorate credit for is that no politician since the founding of the State in 1922 has lost a seat over private foibles – perhaps it’s one of the few times we’ve learnt our lessons from the treatment of Charles Stewart Parnell (who should have been allowed to lead us to Independence) and Oscar Wilde? Unfortunately, we’re also far too willing to forgive corruption 😐

  24. mollination says:

I don’t think the fake screen name thing makes Elizabeth crazy.

Living in the public eye and having to be politically correct all the time, it’s probably kinda therapeutic to just go the eff off, and say all the things you’re thinking to the public. But she’s doing it in a way that doesn’t incriminate herself, or offer any legitmacy to the claims (thus make them more public) – I say that’s a pretty classy route.

Sure, it’s no Princess Di or anything – but jeez. I’d have a lot of pent up crap to say too. And it doesn’t make her crazy. It’s not like she actually believes she’s an African American woman named Cherubim.

  25. Jeane says:

    @ AlaskaJoey:

I know right?? So random! lol

  26. Sudini says:

Well said Embee! And Alaska Joey – thank you for pointing that out!! That last line sounds like nothing more than a name drop to me. SO totally irrelavent.

I really just wish Elizabeth would leave the sad sack of poo that is her husband and take him for every penny. What a disgusting excuse for a human being that “man” is…

  27. Jerry says:

I completely agree with Embee and Raven on this. Although I don’t think Elizabeth is Cherubim, I do agree with Mollination in that she has the right to post under an anonymous name if she so chose. There is a lot I would want to vent about if I were her.

  28. Firestarter says:

Well, my toughts are, if someone can be dishonest in their personal life, with the people that they claim to love, then what would prevent them from being dishonest and crooked with the interests of the people that they represent?

Politics are dirty, people are not perfect, but at the same time, people who are elected to serve should be held to a higher standard as they represent the people and handle our tax dollars. I am not in politics because I am far from perfect and I wouldn’t trust me! ; P

  29. Trojans says:

IMO John no doubt had affairs on Elizabeth for years, long before he was in politics. He used her to advance his station in life, and was so adept at concealing his affairs that he actually thought he could get away with running for president without changing his MO. Rielle punk’d him with the oldest trick in the books, getting knocked up. What a moron he is. Elizabeth needs to let John go and retain some semblance of a life with dignity. Since he is moving his next wife and their child close to home, Elizabeth needs to move far, far away from him. He is only dragging her down into the sewer with him. Rielle deserves no sympathy, she knew what she was doing. She got pregnant with the intention of using the child for her own personal gain, which she has done. I feel sorry for Elizabeth’s children.

  30. Mairead says:

Firestarter, I can understand why you (and much of the US and the UK from what I can make out) think that way. I see the point, but I guess living in a country where mass stupidity seems to outweigh moral bankruptcy in the country’s rulers. I just want a government that will actually govern the country – not one that will cobble together arse-covering exercises on the back of fag-packets until the next general election where they bribe the selfish electorate to get reelected; one that won’t give their chronies huge golden handshakes for leaving semi-state bodies in a state of crisis whilst cutting social welfare; one that won’t consistently wash it’s hands of those most in need and threaten those who try to assert their rights with taking them to the supreme court and make sure they pay back the government’s costs; one that won’t abandon the vulnerable; one that won’t deflect blame from their own stupid economic policies; one that won’t waste BILLIONS of Euro on tribunals that will hold nobody accountable at the end…
And if allowing a few politicians to screw around with some secretaries, then so be it.

The problem with power and money is that they makes for a strong aphrodisiac in both men and women, coupled with long hours and days away from the family it makes it far too easy to cheat and not get caught out. Now please don’t get me wrong there are many perfectly decent men and women in politics who work very hard for their constituents and would not consider being unfaithful.

The only way I can see of being absolutely sure of no sexual impropriety we could only have eunuchs in power. It’s just that if we want to be absolutely sure… 😉

  31. Justalark says:

I agree with AlaskaJoey(#8): The one line in this whole boring and sordid tale that caught my interest is the last highlighted item in the quote box.
Q: WHAT IN THE WORLD does Ted Kennedy and would-be assassins and gay bodyguards/aides have to do with this story of a politician’s extra-marital affairs and his pseudonym-using scorned wife?!! My theory is that the TK anecdote was just stuck in this piece to wake us up as we were dozing off from hearing the same old story about some sleazy celebrity/politician lying about the skeletons escaping from his family closet…

  32. Firestarter says:

@Mairead- You are quite correct in what points you have made. The sad thing is that often times a politician’s personal life does spill over into his publicly elected professional life and that is when I have a problem. I really do not care what goes on behind closed doors, because we are all human and capable of good and bad. Unfortunately, when you are in politics and you are having an affair, or running with prostitutes, or into kink, it seems that these things start to have an adverse effect on the person in charge, as their sexual proclivities take on more importance than the job that they were elected or appointed to do. So I am with you as far as caring that these people govern correctly and ignoring their personal stuff. Unfortunately,as is the case with Edwards, sometimes these people abuse the power they have and use their office and the funds they have from said position, in order to facilitate or cover up their lifestyle. If the two could be seperate: At home, low life scum bag cheater and liar, at work:responsible committed politican there for the people, I could give a fig, but they bring the home to the office and that is when it starts to affect their ability to govern and work effectively.

I guess I am old fashioned, but I think politician’s should walk the walk and talk the talk, I think police and law enforcement officials should do the things that they arrest others for not doing. I think priests should be celibate and not sexual predators, I think people who are in a position of authority SHOULD behave better than everyone else, as they are supposed to be what others look up to and people that we trust.

I guess I just want to be able to have the youth of today look up to say a politican and see that he is someone who they should grow up and aspire to be, instead of seeing people as they really are. I should have grown up in the 50’s, with soda shops, sock hops and everything like Pleasantville!

  33. Mairead says:

We’re on the same page on a lot of things Firestarter – where the personal impacts on the public, be it dashing off for a quickie before a meeting then they should be removed from positions of power. Where corruption (such as siphoning off campaign funds or securing “jobs for the boys” ) and illegality (prostitution, drunk driving) occur then politicians should be OUT as they are breaking the laws they are meant to uphold and making a mockery of the law and the electorate. Ideally yes, they should be better than the great unwashed, but considering what a tough life politics is and the type of personality you have to be to survive, I’ll take a modicum of intelligence and a healthy dose of bravery 😉 (and by personality, I don’t mean anything bad. I just happen to agree with Irish actor/comedian Ardal O’Hanlon, who was Fr. Dougal in the “Father Ted” sitcom, and whose father is a politician. He was asked if he ever considered going into politics like his father; he said no, he could never be that permanently optimistic. Which I thought was a good analysis. You need a bull/brass neck and an unwavering belief that you’ll get reelected to survive).

Can’t say I fully agree on some of your other wishes – celibacy in the priesthood was a cynical money-saving exercise in the middle ages and think it’s cruel to put a person through so much personal hardship and turmoil if they commit the made-up “sin” of falling in love.

And i would hate to have lived in the 50s, all that smug moral hypocrisy with society colluding in the mistreatment of women, children and the mentally ill who had the misfortune in not falling into a strict code of keeping-up-appearances. But you could have a groovy Art Deco kitchen and you could leave your doors unlocked, so it wasn’t all bad 😉

  34. Firestarter says:

Mairead- I just love the Leave it to Beaver family style of the 50’s. I don’t really believe that life was like the movies or tv shows, but I would love to think that it was.

I just wish for simple times where people have morals and values.

  35. Andy says:

remember, we have been told that what people do in their private life is not “on the table” when they run for public office. If you believe that than you believe in edwards and clinton. Both are dirtbags. The only problem is their wives don’t want to give up their lifestyle/position..

  36. Wresa says:

Haha Minx (#16). Look up Alexander Hamilton and you will see that America’s obsession with political sex scandals is almost as old as the country itself!

  37. GatsbyGal says:

Oh John Edwards…and to think, I used to have a crush on you back in 2004. What a fucking disappointment you turned out to be.

  38. 4Real says:

The public would probably forgive the affair, but the misuse of $$ is a real betrayal of the public’s trust especially his campaign workers and followers. He’s an embarassment to his party. It’s all a total mess and I’m sure there’s lots more nasty layers involved with all of the players.
