This is Christian Serratos, whom we do not cover enough. She’s a Mexican-American actress best known for The Walking Dead and the Netflix series about the life and times of Selena Quintanilla. Christian has been a working actress since she was a little kid though, on Nickelodeon shows and other things. She’s 30 years old! I thought she was something like 24. Christian has a profile in W Magazine’s “TV Portfolio.” W posed various TV stars as iconic television characters. Christian got Fran from The Nannyyou can see the profile and photos here. Some highlights from the interview:

Her favorite ‘90s style moments from The Nanny: “People don’t talk about what a fashion icon Fran Drescher was. She’s got a lot of looks! Some of her stuff felt super ʼ60s, but other stuff felt very of its time. The stockings with every outfit were epic, very ʼ90s and fabulous.

Her daily style: “My day-to-day is black and white. I’m in sweats—and to me, that’s a f–king outfit. I feel rich wearing sweats! A lot of people think sweats are like you’ve given up on life, but I think sweats mean you want to be comfortable and ready for anything. It prepares you for a spontaneous day. The other version of me is, I love 1930s–50s glam. So I love being completely overdressed when I can be. I really don’t have a middle ground.

What she learned about Selena Quintanilla: “I knew that she wore many hats and that she was very self-sufficient, but I didn’t know the extent. I didn’t know that all of her costumes throughout her career were created by her. I thought at some point she probably had somebody or people, but no, everything, down to the purple jumpsuit, was her. I was also surprised to learn that there were three or four different colors of that jumpsuit and she wore them to shows, but they didn’t become as well-known as the purple one because she wore it to such a huge venue. The Astrodome was insane. So that became kind of synonymous with Selena.

Selena was early to being a “creative director.” “So early! I realized doing press for Selena, we kept talking about her in the fashion world. I was like, wow, she was kind of the Rihanna of her time. It just makes me sad thinking about what she could have accomplished because she wanted to do it all. That was a really smart woman.

[From W Magazine]

That made me so sad about Selena because Christian is right – Selena was her own creative director, she was the proto-Beyonce, proto-Rihanna. Selena understood branding and imagery instinctively. As for what Christian says about wearing sweats… she’s so right. I lived the Sweatpants Life before the pandemic and I do think it’s a flex. It’s not “I don’t care enough to get dressed up,” it’s more like “I think I look fine and who really cares.” It’s what real rich-bitches do.

Yes, let’s follow her more please. She seems amazing and I completely agree about sweatpants.

  2. Penguin says:

How was there no so sweats at the met? those are inherently American now that I think about it. What a missed opportunity

  3. Jay says:

True about the sweats! That’s what I was missing from the “America” met gala. I was expecting a lot of fancy atheleisure, or riffs on it, but the only one that I remember was Timmothee C, sort of. Maybe people wanted to be out of pandemic wear?

Anyway, when I was in college, the ultimate “cool girl” look definitely included sweatpants and an artfully dingy/ripped shirt (vintage and heavy on the irony if possible), plus “undone” hair that actually took a lot of time and effort. I’m exhausted just thinking about it!

  4. Case says:

Seriously, when I wear a cute coordinated sweats outfit I feel awesome.

  5. Mac says:

Sweats and lounge bras are my look and I love it. We need to normalize sweats in every environment.

I whole heartedly agree with everything – from Fran to the sweats! I like her even more now.

I don’t go anywhere but to work and when I’m home I wear no pants so…

I’ve loved Christian since Twilight. She played Angela, one of Bella’s friends in high school. But, I really started to appreciate her talent in The Walking Dead and now Selena. She has something special and I hope for her lots more success.

I have to credit (and, I suppose, admire) any woman who loves the 30’s through the 50’s in terms of style. To be meticulously put together head to toe, fitted garments, hose…… I seriously can’t think of anything worse.
