Drew Barrymore was on The Today Show this morning talking about her directorial debut “Whip It,” which opens in theaters tomorrow. Whenever I see Drew interviewed I’m always shocked by how much I like her and how easily it is to relate to her. She’s been through so much in her life but managed to come out a stronger, better person for it. You can tell she’s truly reflective , and she tried to bring her life experience to her film.

“Whip It” is about a small town girl named Bliss Cavendar (played by Ellen Page) whose mother (Marcia Gay Harden) wants her to compete in beauty pageants. However Bliss discovers roller derby and meets some girls she instantly connects with. Her mother isn’t supportive of the idea, and Drew does a great job of showing the complexity of mother-daughter relationships. Talking with Ann Curry this morning, Drew points out that Marcia Gay Harden just wants what’s best for her daughter, and when she was growing up that was pageants. There’s a big focus on the motivation and the fact that it’s good, even if the result is stressful.

Drew also said some great things about how she’s changed in her thirties, and one of them really stuck with me.

“It was so wonderful for me to get to be able to make a film about what mothers and daughters go through because I’ve been through so much with my own mother, that I could really bring a lot of personal honesty and experience to it. And what I didn’t want to make was a Hollywood version of what families go through, because it’s rough, you can’t sweep things under the carpet, you have to deal with it, you have good days and bad days. And in my twenties I used to believe in happy endings – and I still do – but I my thirties I really love a good day.”

I love that Drew isn’t trying to gloss over the complexities within families and between mothers and daughters. And I really appreciate what she said about loving a good day. If you’re waiting for your happy ending… it’s not that you aren’t going to get it, but you might not realize it until way into the future. After all, it hasn’t ended yet. But appreciating just having a good day – that’s realistic, and it helps you to be happy each and every day. Maybe it sounds a little hokey but it definitely worked for me.

Drew was emancipated when she was 15 years old, arguing to the court that her mother, Jaid Barrymore, was a bad influence on her. She’d started drinking and smoking pot by the age of 10, was in rehab by 13, and tried to commit suicide at 14. After that she lived with David Crosby and his wife for several months. Crosby said Drew stayed with them because Drew, “‘needed to be around some people that were committed to sobriety.’” After that she got emancipated and never relapsed. In fact she’s quite the Hollywood success story, given the way child stars often turn out.

While she’s got some great insights, Drew still doesn’t have a good relationship with her mother. She told October’s In Style, “‘I am okay with my dad, but my mom and I have yet to work it out… I don’t talk about it because … how do you talk about something you’re confused about?’” And really, all Drew can do is work on herself and do what she can to recover from the relationship with her mom, and build her own happy, successful life. She can’t force her mom to be the person she needs her to be. It sounds like she’s made what peace with it that she can, and if nothing else has used all that she’s learned to bring a surprising complexity and depth to her first directorial project.

I wanna see this movie so bad…it’s on my must-see list. I adore Drew – I think she gets more and more beautiful as she matures. She had a feature in Elle a couple years ago that was just stunning – I know it was photoshopped but it still looked like her – her facial features were just gorgeous. She isn’t really thought of as the femme fatale but she really is beautiful.

  2. Katyusha says:

Drew is super nice, too. Before she started filming for this movie, she’d go to the LA Derby Doll games and sit with the crowd and smoke outside with them.
I mentioned before, my old teammate/friend Kristen is in this movie and in that trailer still you have posted, she’s second from the left (next to Eve)!!
    Gooooooooo Kristen!

  3. Sudini says:

“I’m always shocked by how much I like her and how easily it is to relate to her.”

Well said JayBird- I’ve always felt the same way. I think Drew is a beautiful person and extremely genuine. She’s definitely an old soul.

I’ll totally go see this movie 🙂

  4. Diane says:

Drew is a natural, and I’ve always seen her present as honest, no marketing image agendas.

    The film sounds great.

Drew is drinking again, see Parade Magazine. I’m hopeful we’ll see more facts disclosed about the use or abuse of alcohol. Fully 50% return to normal drinking levels, don’t need endless meetings, etc.

(Pinsky as a professional knows better and needs to stop spouting mis-information).

  5. WTF?!? says:

Can’t stand her. She’s talentless and a phony who parlayed an historic Hollywood family name into a popcorn and bubblegum career. If she weren’t still a drinking mess, I might give her some credit for getting clean, but she’s just a hypocrite. She’s “okay with [her] dad” because he’s dead.
AND she broke up a family by screwing Val Kilmer for fun when she was 19 years old and his HAWT wife was 8 months pregnant with their son.
She’s a hose beast, I never did buy into her marketing.

  6. KateNonymous says:

“AND she broke up a family by screwing Val Kilmer for fun when she was 19 years old and his HAWT wife was 8 months pregnant with their son.”

I’m pretty sure that Kilmer broke up his own family.

  7. WTF?!? says:

Drew provided the vagina, Kate, and engaged in a campaign to bed him while he was a continent away from his family, all the time pretending to be the wife’s friend as well.
He’s an ass, absolutely, but Drew doesn’t get a bye for her unconscionable behaviour. She was an “adult” at 15, remember?

  8. Katyusha says:

For being talentless, she sure has accomplished a few things.

  9. l says:

I’ve always liked her well enough but was unsure of how “authentic” her public personality was. But then she had that house fire when she was with Tom Green, and I heard her 911 call, and OMG it was kind of hillarious. I know that’s not really a good way to desribe it, but talk about MELLOW!!!! so yeah…it erased any doubts for me about how real she is.

Also, regarding the whole Val Kilmer situation. At 19 your an idiot, you do idiotic things-that’s the way it is, as you get older, hopefully you stop making dumb moves, which in her case, I think she has. Val was the OLDER one, the MARRIED one, the one with the PREGNANT wife.

  10. orion70 says:

I can’t wait to see this movie, I’ve always had a secret dream about running away and joining the roller derby lol. Love the cast here.

I’m a fan of Drew’s. I hope this does well.

  11. Best of British says:

Who knows what she’s like in real life. She comes across well in her interviews but then she’s probably rehearsed a lot of the lines she comes out with. I dont really like or dislike her but I do agree that she’s looking better and better with age. Now she’s lost a little weight, she looks fantastic, and her skin’s glowing. I also like her with shorter hair, its a sharp, edgy but feminine look.. She doesnt have any real acting talent tho.. very dull to watch and says all of her words so carefully and slowly, it drives me crazy.

  12. Meg says:

She’s looking and sounding real rough

  13. Birdie says:

I can’t wait to see this movie!

Go Drew! It’s nice to see a feminist succeed in Hollywood!

  14. Hieronymus Grex says:

I refuse to take any director who lisps seriously.

  15. Ana says:

Meh, sometimes I like her sometimes I don’t.
She reminds me of those portraits of Queens of England that were always described as beautiful. I always thought they were ugly.
Ah it’s late and I’m not making any sense. Night y’all.

  16. Granger says:

Yeah, I’m pretty lukewarm on Drew too. She seems like a cute, fun person who’d be great to hang out with, but I don’t think she’s a good actor and I’ve always been mystified by her success. She got her start because of her famous pedigree, and while obviously that isn’t quite enough to keep the roles coming, I believe her name and her lovable personality are what have kept her alive in H-wood. You’d be hard-pressed to meet an older male producer or director in La La Land who doesn’t think she’s adorable. Anyway, maybe turning to directing will be the best thing she ever did!

  17. lilred says:

I want to see this. I love Ellen Page and that has nothing to do with her being a home town girl.

  18. sauvage says:

Please, Drew, lay off the Botox. I mean it.

I love her to death, but it’s really difficult for me to look at her doing that interview when she can barely move her mouth.

  19. puppybrite says:

@Ana LOL I totally get what you’re saying.

I think she is such an idiot. I saw her once on a talk show and she said she was a vegan….but she ate eggs and cheese and milk…does she not know that’s a vegetarian? It’s clear she never finished school.

  20. KateNonymous says:

Sorry, WTF?!?, but while my comment in no way lets her off the hook for her actions, he’s the one who was married and betrayed that marriage. He didn’t have to take her up on her “campaign” and, in his mid-30s, was definitely old enough to know what he was doing (and to know that a 19-year-old with a turbulent past and a history of bad choices was too young for him).

  21. Anastasia says:

Ok I love her, but WTF with her face? She’s using Botox, she’s gotten too thin, and she honestly sounds like she’s slurring a bit, along with her natural lisp in this interview. What the heck? It was a bit disturbing.

  22. Ana says:

Well there was a blind item about an actress looking different. She got fat sucked out of her face.
No matter how skinny Drew gets, she has always had a chubby face.
I think she had the fat sucked out, but it ended up making her look older.

  23. Ana says:

puppybrite–I am glad you get it. My husband always looks at me like “huh?” when I mention this.

  24. Nicole says:

Drew looks so great in these pics (love the hair)!! I’m also eager to see the movie. I’m also a huge fan of Ellen Page. BTW, Drew’s movie Never Been Kissed is toooo sweet. Love it!

  25. Willow definitely knows the way to put a show in front of the camera. Willow’s performance on the Whip My Hair music video was totally fabulous. These other ladies in the industry better learn from Willow and get their act up! The competition’s coming up.
