I actually have watched some of Succession, enough to know that the cast is having a great time playing a rich family loosely based on Rupert Murdoch’s clan. But I’ve just never really gotten into the show. Still, I’m happy that the Succession fans have a new season to enjoy. These photos are from the recent premiere event for the new season. Brian Cox plays Logan Roy, the patriarch of the wealthy Roy family. Brian Cox didn’t come from money – he grew up in a working class family in Scotland, and he apparently has a pretty low opinion of the current crop of billionaires:
“Succession” star Brian Cox, who stars as media magnate and billionaire Logan Roy on the HBO series, slammed real-life billionaires as total space cadets.
“Some rich guys think it’s best to be in [and] out of space most of the time,” the actor told Page Six at the “Succession” premiere on Tuesday night, naming Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson as major offenders. “When Branson said that we need more spaceships, I thought, ‘That’s the last thing this world needs is more spaceships.’”
The Amazon founder traveled to space on the New Shepard rocket in July while the Virgin mogul won the “billionaire space race” when he launched himself and five others in his own Virgin Galactic rocket earlier that same month.
Cox, donning a jaunty face mask that said “#TeamLoganRoy” on one side and “F–k Off” on the other, added, “So you realize a lot of these rich guys do lose the plot sometimes.”
So Brian Cox is in agreement with Prince William, huh? William actually said his sh-t around the exact same time as Cox, and William said much the same thing, how billionaire space cowboys shouldn’t waste all of these resources on space tourism. That’s the thing – these sentiments are pretty widely supported. Most people around the world look at what Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Richard Branson are doing and we can’t believe how out-of-touch it seems. (Sidenote: Brian Cox is actually pro-Scottish independence, which obviously means that he doesn’t agree with William on everything.)

Brian Cox also played the owner of Westworld so I imagine he has quite a few more strong opinions on how billionaires waste money

You know. Alot of people say the same thing about music and art (thus cutting those school programs here in the US) that everyone seems to be saying about science right now. Everyone focuses on the spaceships, but not the technology that is developed with that research money that makes huge impacts on technology here on earth to support sustainable living.
Space travel is all about being sustainable. There isn’t unlimited resources up there. The things we develop for that are used here on Earth for many things, to help grow plants better, technology to filter water, improve air quality, all of that. Advancement in solar and chemical power for clean energy.
I don’t really care what the billionaires are doing, because I see the science their antics are helping fund and develop and how it affects people here on Earth for the better.

Plus, Elon Musk shouldn’t be in the same sentence than R. Branson or J.Bezos. He’s literally disrupted the launcher market.
But the billionaires own that research and what are they actually doing with it? It’s proprietary, so they are going to use it to their advantage. So far we’ve only seen them use it to launch themselves a tiny bit into space.
Yup! We learned and developed a lot through publicly-funded space studies, but in all likelihood, it’s not going to happen though private ones. Plus we’re already polluting the skies and Earth’s surroundings more than we should as it is. More billionaires and their vanity projects is not what’s going to help us manage inequities and climate change
Exactly! I was watching Prof. Brian Cox talk about this (not the same Brian Cox of this article, obviously), and space exploration is not only amazing for tech development but it will also allow us to move industries to the moon or Mars or whatever, and try and save Earth’s environments.
The difference lies between public space funding and some asshole billionaires creating a tourist attraction that will pollute our skies with gimmicky one hour flights.
Honestly, there are entire universes between exploration of space for science, you know, with scientists and trained astronauts and paying a million bucks to forego any education and training, just so you can say you’ve been to space.
I would love to be proven wrong on this but what exactly is billionaire space tourism today doing to improve the lives of people in need? As far as I can tell, nothing. It’s just a boys and their toys BS competition.
The world doesn’t need anymore billionaires either.
