Shalita Grant, Sherry on ‘You’: ‘Madre Linda is a character in and of itself’ (spoilers)

Major spoilers for season three of You
Last week I binged all of season three of You. While I felt guilty about that I was also thoroughly entertained. That show is bonkers and there are so many twists and turns. You also change opinions about the characters quickly. For instance I felt so bad for the young neighbor, Theo, even though he was a little jerkweed up until his story took a dark turn. I also really hated Sherry Conrad, the “influencer”/Love’s new best friend. Sherry talked about everyone behind their backs and centered herself during Natalie’s disappearance. At first I wanted her to die, but when Love and Joe put Sherry and her dumb beefcake husband, Cary, in the cage I was rooting for them. Sherry and Cary were annoying, but they didn’t deserve to die. Toward the end I was hoping Joe would get caught or murdered and that Love would be the next antihero, as Dustin at Pajiba explains so well. Joe’s backstory didn’t do enough to humanize him and he kept turning on Love when they should have been a team, like Sherry and Cary. This show is wildly popular though and they’re not going to kill off the lead character.

I’ve been enjoying reading interviews with the new additions this season, particularly Shalita Grant who plays Sherry. Shalita spoke to Vulture about her character’s journey. Shalita and her onscreen husband, Travis Van Winkle, also spoke to TVLine about the show. I’m including excerpts from both of those interviews below.

On what we learn about Sherry and Cary
In the beginning, when we first meet Sherry and Cary, the audience is meant to feel that this couple is super on-the-surface, that they’re only together because they’re good-looking and can make a lot of money together. But in the cage, we learn that their marriage is a love marriage; regardless of what the audience thinks about them, like, working out together, posting on Instagram together, whatever, they really saved each other. Their union is why they thrive as individuals. We don’t get that in the beginning, but by the end, we know that it’s not a fake marriage. It’s not a toxic marriage in the way that Joe and Love’s marriage certainly is.

Vulture:[Sherry] is a lot smarter than we all gave her credit for. Like that moment when she realizes there’s a hidden key. That was the first moment where I was like, Wait, maybe I like Sherry.
Absolutely. Again, going back to that example of two sides of the same coin, when Sherry and Cary learn the horror of Joe and Love’s marriage — that they are serial killers, they’re horrible people, but at the root of it, they just don’t trust each other. And that’s what makes them different than Sherry and Cary. Their love marriage is built on trust and communication, no matter how annoying and granola you think they are, that’s the truth of who they are.

Vulture: So, do we think Sherry and Cary end up okay?
Madre Linda is a character in and of itself. It’s what’s great about the series, that the locations are characters too. And what we learn about Madre Linda is at the end of the day, the members of that enclave will metabolize anything and become successful. It’s not just Sherry and Cary, it’s Kiki and her husband and their baby, Toxi, who they named after their new poison-detecting app. They metabolize this event and they become successful because of it, because that’s the mindset of these people. They’re always optimizing. Always. – From Vulture

On what she wanted for her character
When I found out we were going to survive, I was like, ‘God damn it!’ I’ve never died on camera, and I was practicing how I was going to die. But when we got into the thick of it — once we got to Episode 6 or 7 — I was like, ‘Of course these people are going to survive!’ These are two people who know they’re going to succeed in life. I also thought it was very poetic that while they survived this dehumanizing situation, the house of Love had to burn down. – From TVLine

[From Vulture and TV Line]

I love that Shalita wanted her character to die. She also perfectly explained how tenacious the characters in Madre Linda are, and how the town takes on those traits too. I was telling Hecate that I’m glad I don’t live in Los Angeles. I’m sure there were many truths presented about the bullsh-t fake culture there. The ending scene (I’m not going to spoil it, but that horse has left the barn) encapsulated both how annoying and enterprising those people are.

Next season we’ll surely see Joe overseas for a while. I hope he returns to Madre Linda to check on his son, if only so I can see how Sherry and Cary are doing. You know they’re killing it.

I ended up liking her – I thought she was funny and smart and by the end was rooting for them to survive.

Shalita ran away with the season and took it to new, unexpected levels! It was all completely bonkers but so, so much fun (if one or two so episodes too long)! I definitely want to follow her career more.

Anyway, after season two, I thought I was done with YOU, but you wouldn’t let me go and now I’m stuck with YOU for good!

      • Ann says:

Couldn’t agree more. She made the third season! She was SO funny and Shalita is an incredible actress.

I thought it was great how they switched it u9 a bit this season rather than just reapeated the same formula of joe getting obsessed with a new woman each series. The exploration of their insane relationship dynamic added something really interesting as well as some social commentary in this season, whilst still maintaining the usual creepy joe vibe of previous seasons. It was interesting and gripping enough to look past the total ridiculousness of endlessly getting away with murders!

Hey Celebitches (without spoilers) are you guys tuning in and enjoying this show? I finally said let me see what the hype is about, i am someone not too picky the only thing i dont enjoy is Sci Fi , when i tell you i have not been able to get past Episode 3 on season ONE. Does it pick up ?

    • Celebitchy says:

I think it really depends on if you don’t mind watching shows about terrible people. If you’re someone who can’t watch a show where you hate everyone and think they suck in various ways it’s not for you. It’s really engaging and I couldn’t stop watching every season so far.

      • Lola Coasters says:

I loved season one, took two tries to get into season two (then loved it) and binged season three in a couple days (also now obsessed with Excile by T Swift) and the best part was that almost everyone is horrible so their misery was easier to enjoy!

    • CherHorowitz says:

I started You when it came out and didnt get into it at all. Returned to it a year later and binged the first 2 series in one weekend. Take from that what you will!

    • Cee says:

I had read the book before the show was developed, and I loved-hated it so much I actually threw it across the room when I was done. It was so creepy and violent but GOOD. I find the TV show more palatable and Penn manages to humanize Joe enough to make it interesting and beareable. Everyone is THE WORST but it’s a good show.

      • lucy2 says:

I hated the book and that’s why I haven’t checked it out, but a bunch of my friends like it, maybe I’ll have to give it a try at some point.

      • Anners says:

I had also read the book before (enjoyed it and followed up with Hidden Bodies which I thought dragged) and I really enjoyed the first season. Second season was okay, but also dragged. I really liked the third season because it wasn’t as formulaic. I think Penn Badgley does an incredible job playing both sides of Joe – the charming, intelligent, shy nerd guy and the stone cold sociopath. I’m glad there’s going to be a season 4.

    • Elf says:

I think season 1 is the weakest one. The second and thirds season had a better cast and writing but honestly it depends on your tastes, maybe it’s not your cup of tea

I loved Sherry and Carey. First off we rarely get a black woman playing the mean Queen Bee role and it made me wonder what skills did she use to thrive in such a white environment. She was a horrible gossip but she was smart and savvy and I adored that for the most part she was pretty honest about her relationship with Carey, for example at the winery day when she levelled with love about the bs of soulmates and admitted that their was a point in their marriage where she hated Carey. And when they got trapped in the cage, I was rooting for them because not only did they work as a team but they showed the stuff that make relationships thrive- communication, honestly, support. It was pretty cleverly plaid that they are a mirror of Love and Joe but actually healthy.

As to Joe it is hard to make his character redeemable- because frankly I don’t care about what backstory they give him, he is a predator. I didn’t get all the defence of Love at all. She is as horrible as Joe but infinitely worse at the crimes she commits because she was raised wealthy and is used to people cleaning up her messes. The whole season was a mess but a fun one.

    • Myra says:

When they were in the cage, it dawned on me that Sherry is a survivor. She is very astute and has good observation skills, a bit similar to Joe. She just uses hers to succeed financially/socially in life, rather than to stalk and murder people. She would likely thrive in any challenging situation/environment.

I don’t get why people root for either Joe or Love. “You” is an entertaining series but I can’t wait for Joe to get his comeuppance.

  5. Ariel says:

Okay, that thing y’all experienced when you started rooting for Sherry and Cary- never happened for me. I was so disappointed that they lived.
I mean- their eventuality was FUNNY, don’t get me wrong, but they were garbage and i was rooting for them to die.

  6. Tiffany says:

I like Shalita and she was the only reason I tuned in to NCIS New Orleans.

Now I gotta check out You.

  7. Leeloo says:

Can we talk about how Sherry’s hair looked an absolute mess? Netflix not hiring a hair dresser who knows anything about black hair is racism on set and not enough people are talking about it.

    • Elf says:

I noticed that. Yes, she was pretty but her hair was really messy. Though the other woman whose John was obsessed, Mary Ann, had a nice abeilt short hair so who knows…
