Why did Angelina Jolie’s style team allow her to go out with janky extensions?

16th Rome Film Festival, Red Carpet of movie 'Eternals',Rome, Italy

Angelina Jolie was in Rome on Sunday and Monday, where she did three events to promote The Eternals. The biggest event was Sunday evening’s European premiere, the other two events were photocalls and a media event/press conference. For the smaller events, her hair was styled as it normally would be, down with a fluffy blowout. For the premiere, however… someone thought it would be a good idea to make Jolie’s hair very sleek and straight, and for her to wear extensions down to her waist. This was the result.

I didn’t even see the look from the back when I covered these photos yesterday – I was just looking at her face, body and Versace dress. I rarely look at her hair because her hair usually isn’t that notable either way. She’s not really a “big hair” woman, and while she’s worn hairpieces before, it’s usually to complement an updo of some kind. These extensions were clearly clip-in (they were out the next day) and no one bothered to make sure that they were in any way properly blended. It’s a disaster, it really is! I can feel Jolie’s enemies mocking her from here.

What’s crazy is that Angelina clearly put a new style team in place ahead of this big promotional blitz for The Eternals. About two months ago, she hired Jason Bolden, a Black stylist who works with celebrities like Gabrielle Union, Michael B.Jordan, Yara Shahidi, Amanda Gorman, Ava DuVernay, Alicia Keys and Oscar Isaac. Did he not send a glam squad with Jolie to Rome? What professional hair stylist would allow their client to go to a MAJOR Marvel movie premiere like this??

These were so bad. I’m not one who can always spot extensions but there is NO WAY not to see these. They are so bad. She’s one of the biggest movie stars in the world and this is what they did to her?

And I am also annoyed bc I don’t think they were necessary, The look she was going for – long, sleek hair – worked just fine with her hair at its normal length, especially with the hair pulled back over her shoulder. The longer hair maybe added some drama but overall I think just the sleek hair would have worked.

(for the record though look at the long sleek hair, ignore the extensions lol, with the sparkly form fitting dress. THAT’S a red carpet look, Kate Middleton.)

    • Noki says:

Are MUAs and stylists also part of unions, whats going on in Hollywood? Its like her hair was getting done and the hair stylist just said f** it and quit!

    • GraceB says:

I wear clip-ins and I think you’d have to have a near perfect colour and texture match, as well as your own hair not having a blunt cut edge, in order for them to blend in a sleek style like this. I’m no expert, and it took me a really long time to figure out just the styling basics with them, but if there is a way to blend with a blunt cut and sleek look, I’d love learn about it.

This makes me wonder whether her stylist was inexperienced, but also whether these photos highlight the difference? Maybe they looked more blended in different lighting, or maybe the photos have been edited to deliberately highlight the mismatch.

Either way, she looks like she has reasonably thick, full hair anyway, so could have done without the extensions in the first place.

I feel bad for her, but I also love when celebs go out looking less than perfect. It makes the rest of us feel a little more normal.

    • Nikki* says:

      Agree totally.

    • FC says:

This was the first thing I saw when she came out. It was so obviously bad especially in co trash with the rest of her which was perfectly styled. Glad they called it out because someone did her dirty.

      • BothSidesNow says:

@ FC, you have excellent eyes as I didn’t see this monstrosity committed against AJ!! These are so bad you would have thought that they had a toddler do her hair!

  2. LaUnicaAngelina says:

That’s some wack ish right there. Damn.

  3. Yogibear says:

What sucks is the color is ok, but not only did they not blend it, it looks like there isn’t enough extensions to begin with. Yikes!

    • Myra says:

Yes, it’s not enough to begin with so no wonder it didn’t blend. She could have gone without honestly as she already stood out, without us seeing the length of her hair.

  4. Léna says:

Oh dear this is so bad

  5. Grace says:

I kind of initially thought it was deliberate… like the mullet hair trend?

    • tempest prognosticator says:

I thought it was deliberate, too.

    • Jezz says:

Had to be intentional, right? Something to start a new trend?

      • Gobo says:

Yeah, I think so too. A bad idea, but nevertheless I don’t beleive it was anything other than intentional.

    • Maria says:

Yeah, there’s no way she would be allowed out like this unless it was intentional, these teams have so many people on them and this wasn’t something you would easily not notice.
That said it’s still awful, lol.

      • Becks1 says:

Yeah, saying it was probably intentional doesn’t really help, because its still an awful look lol.

      • Maria says:

I mean if you squint it’s sort of geometric and goes with her tattoos. It’s sort of cool in a weird way. But still hideous. Don’t know if that makes sense, LOL. Maybe it’s just that she looks great no matter what.

    • Eurydice says:

Yes, I also thought it was intentional, but timid. Like if they had gone with an obviously different color, it wouldn’t look like a mistake.

    • Kebbie says:

I really thought it had to be intentional. There’s no way it was just an accident, these people are pros. Unless it’s as someone suggested further up in the comments, maybe the cameras and lights picked it up better than the naked eye could?

Clearly a failure either way, intentional or not, because everybody thinks it was an accident and she’s getting attention for all the wrong reasons and looking silly now.

      • Poisonella says:

Who knows maybe one of the daughters said it looks cool and she was like fuck it. Show a man a couple of pictures of her in that dress and see if he has any comment on it- I’m betting no.

    • MY3CENTS says:

I thought it was intentional as well. “Cutting edge” would be appropriate.
She’s so beautiful she can get away with anything.

    • Dierski says:

I thought the same – it must be intentional because it is so obvious. Had they tried to do something to integrate them more or hide it, then maybe I’d say accident, but this has to be the (odd) intention… right? 😳

    • Kaykay says:

      This is my thought too!
Something edgy, like her chin cuff the other week.

  6. Nina says:

I’m surprised she didn’t notice. I’m sure someone held a mirror to her to show her how they look from the back once they were in place

    • harperc says:

And she had two teenage daughters with her!

Granted, not all of her kids may not care about looks and fashion, but I feel Zahara at least would have stepped in to say something. She’s the one who’s seems to have the most fun with it and keeps raiding Angelina’s closet for the good stuff. She at least should have been able to utilize some teenage attitude and prevent those extensions from seeing the red carpet.

      • Yup, Me says:

I know you did not just make Angelina’s red carpet look (and flub) her Black child’s responsibility just because said child loves fashion. Wherever your seat is, please have it.

      • PeacefulParsley says:

@Yup. Nope. You’re the one making this about race.

      • Yup, Me says:

And it would be lovely if that never had to happen.

However, when there are numerous conversations regularly taking place about the ways that white women continuously lean on Black women and expect Black women to take care of them and be responsible for them, this kind of comment cannot be dismissed as not about race because we’d prefer that it not be.

And when there are also conversations about ways that Black boys and girls are seen as older than they are and responsible for things that are not theirs to manage, this comment is not just an innocent “Oh, that teenager should not have let her mother leave the house looking like that.”

Zahara is not Angelina’s employee. Her mother’s look was no more her responsibility than it was Shiloh’s or Vivienne’s. It was Angie’s style team’s responsibility. Period.

You can have a seat, as well.

      • Emma says:

Yup, Me is right. Please examine your prejudices and your expectations of Black women and girls.

      • Christy says:

I only understood Haperc to mean Zahara is the fashionista in the family and would be the one most interested and likely to weigh in on Angelina’s fashion/look, not because she is black.

      • Ange says:

Oh my lord. I understand exactly what you meant. Zahara has designed a jewellery collection, she’s always wearing the fashionable clothes out of her siblings (although Pax does get some looks going) – clearly she’s the fashionista of the kids so it’s not that unreasonable to say she’d be the one to intervene out of all of them if any kid was going to. People want to go looking for trouble when there is none smh.

  7. Zapp Brannigan says:

The immense pressure women are placed under to be perfect is fuxxing insane, world headlines crying “disaster” over some bad extensions is bizarre.

    • Nina says:

      So true, couldn’t agree more

    • atorontogal says:

I couldn’t agree more. It’s so sickening. Hair extensions and her daughter in a dress is world “news”! Now, what did they print about the men again? Oh right….

    • Sandy says:

Agree. Yes they were kinda bad, but they in no way subtracted from her beauty and dress. (She’s so statuesque, even if she had a rats nest in her hair and wore a trashbag.)

I myself am trying to be a counterpart to this patriarchal perfect styling of women and have started going out without makeup, roots untreated, bit of grey showing and trying to own it. It is SO HARD. Shitty “helpful” comments from a ton of women about how I could improve my looks. I have to justify myself every time, but once I say I’m done trying to appease the patriarchy no one questions me anymore 😂

      • antipodean says:

@Sandy, thank you so much for saying what has been my deep felt mantra for the last few years! You have encapsulated how my DGAF attitude has at last evolved with your words “I’m done trying to appease the patriarchy”!!!!! Why did I even care for so long? You have given me the phrase I will use to fend off the “helpful” criticism I receive from concerned friends who comment on my quarantine buzz cut!! Liberation at last!

    • MJM says:

I’m in the not a big deal camp with these tbh.

    • Jules says:

Right? I don’t think Jolie really cares that much about fashion or how she looks. She’s gorgeous as is, dresses for comfort and her main focus is her kids and her humanitarian work. She does not sweat the small stuff.

    • Truthiness says:

💯 I saw the extensions and didn’t care. Maybe it was a deliberate layering, maybe it looked fine when the hair was done and fell into sections later. It really is a small part of her total look.

  8. Noki says:

I have seen some choppy hairstyles like this before but they complimented an overall edgy look. This looks like the hairstylist decided to strike midway, why was it blended and overlapped?

  9. Kalana says:

I actually said OMG out loud. I clicked thinking it wasn’t going to be that bad, but no, that is bad.

Wtf sent her out like that?

  10. Mina_Esq says:

I don’t think these were ever supposed to be blended. I think she theme dressed, given the metallic dress. I think this was intended to look alien and futuristic. Yes, we all have horrible extensions in the future 🙂 I kind of like it, truth be told. I sometimes like blunt cuts.

  11. Abby says:

I thought people were being salty until I actually saw the hair. This does not look professional. Her hair would have looked good without the extensions! I’m super surprised as how bad they look. She is gorgeous otherwise and I love this dress. I’m scratching my head at these extensions.

  12. LillyfromLillooet says:

I am for sure a Jolie enemy, but I’m not making fun of her, because she was depending on her team.

Flash photography can make things visible (and see through) that in person look fine. This reminds me of when her team severely let her down in the early aughts (I think?) by putting finishing powder on her that reflected off camera flashes and she had these bizarre giant white swoops on her face, on more than one occasion.

  13. DuchessL says:

I think she lost a piece and there was no time to turn around so she had to go anyway. Nobody would deliberately do this to Angelina. Sh*t happens. I think she cares to look good, but this isnt deep enough to get to her. Like kourtney would say, people are dying.

  14. lanne says:

I think she’s trolling everyone. She’s widely awknowledged to be one of the most beautiful women in the world. Maybe she’s having some fun. Maybe she thought–“just clip them in and let’s go. Who cares?” Maybe it was a joke between her and her kids–“all the things I do, and watch how everyone’s going to talk about my hair now. See how superficial all this nonsense is?” I could totally see her doing something like that. What difference does it make, anyway? People will screech, then she’ll show up looking “perfect” next time, and people will talk about how amazing she looks. It’s a pretty funny troll actually if that’s what she’s doing. I think that sometimes actresses show up in whacked out dresses on purpose to definitely make the worst dressed list–if you’re always expected to look perfect by a narrow set of standards, why not have fun with subverting expectations sometimes. There will always be another media event.

    • Jules says:

Yea I commented above–she probably knew and doesn’t give AF.
“See how superficial all this nonsense is?”— yes!

    • Agreatreckoning says:

@lanne, love your take on this and love the idea Angelina was trolling people not giving any f#cks.

  15. Gil says:

Maybe this hairstylist only knows about curly hair? Those extensions are really bad. I been wearing extensions for years and even during my first time I did manage to do a much more decent job that the one performed on Angelina’s hair. It’s just bad.

    • Amy Too says:

I don’t know, we’ve heard from a lot of people in the beauty industry that they only learned how to work on white hair in cosmetology school, or that maybe there was a one day lesson on textured hair out of their whole time at school. So I find it unlikely that this stylist made it all the way through his entire education and career only learning about black hair and working on black models. If even people who specifically want to learn how to work on all types of hair texture and want to learn how to apply makeup on dark skin have a hard time finding a school that will teach them that I doubt that this one stylist was able to find a 100% black-only beauty education. Black actresses consistently have trouble finding a hair and makeup person on set who can do their hair and makeup, so if there were places that were pumping out graduates who specifically and only specialize in black beauty 24/7 in class, then I don’t think that would be such a common problem for black actresses.

  16. Katherine says:

She’s actually had super long hair on multiple occasions, just check her Alexander era, and her goth era (not the short hair one) with those really long tresses, and when she was young too, her hair was much longer. She’s had slightly over the shoulder length for probably a decade now which is why peopel probably don’t think of her as the long hair person but she was before. I even remember long hair at kung fu panda premiere when she was pregnant and in a green dress, it was wavy so it did not hit the waist but it would’ve been this length if straight.

  17. Hello Kitty says:

The only thing that makes sense to me is that her hairstylist blow dried and straightened her hair and Angie/her kids decided to clip them in for a little fun, not really caring if they blended, because ya know, she’s Angelina Jolie and looks beautiful regardless. That’s the only plausible explanation. Also, I saw the janky extensions and couldn’t care less bc my God this woman’s FACE. plus Jason bolden killed it on the custom Versace dress. So kudos all around, despite the extensions which in no way detract from her beauty.

  18. Marigold says:

    I can’t imagine that it isn’t intentional.

    • april says:

I’m with you. It’s blatantly obvious it was meant to be the way they are. No one is that stupid to not notice the way they are placed.

  19. Mireille says:

I am not sure what the big deal is or why this is even controversial. So what? She had a misstep with extensions. She’s had fashion missteps before and she’s “survived”. This is red carpet fashion superficiality, not brain surgery. People are reacting like this is some major international disaster. I don’t think she’s even thinking about it much less care.

I will say this. I noticed that anything negative about her — even the slightest hint of bad publicity — has brought out all her haters, critics, AND ESPECIALLY the “I am not hating on Angelina, even though I don’t like Angelina, but I have to say…” commentators on Twitter and here on CB in full force in the last 2 days to give all their unending opinions and about “The Extensions.” Any opportunity to passive aggressively attack her. Have at it. Angie’s a walking “fashion disaster” while gleefully cackling. Some things never change. Just thought I call those people out.

    • Becks1 says:

This is a celebrity gossip blog. People can gossip about celebrities, especially when such an A list star has such an obvious misstep (or her hair stylist did.)

I just don’t understand all the posts about “so what, this isn’t a big deal, why are we talking about this.” BECAUSE IT IS A CELEBRITY GOSSIP BLOG where we discuss red carpet fashion on a regular basis. (when there are red carpets.)

I saw one person on this post say they weren’t a Jolie fan, everyone else just said the extensions were bad. WHICH THEY WERE.

      • oliphant500 says:

ITA becks1- the original post was about her looks at a premiere, it wasn’t about her charity work that was then hijacked by talk about her appearance-this is a gossip site not the economist. This site talks about the hair, makeup and dress of many celebs- stans need to chill, Angelina isn’t reading this lol.

      • ReginaGeorge says:

All people on this blog need to ask themselves is “what if Kate’s extensions looked like this?” I guarantee no one would be questioning the responses to those awful extensions or writing dissertations about trolling, feminism, hating etc. It’s a celeb gossip blog for Pete’s sake. Commenting on hair, makeup and fashion are par for the course.

  20. Merricat says:

I mean, yikes. It does not look good or purposeful to me.

    • Becks1 says:

Stop being a hater Merricat. Fight the patriarchy. etc etc. LOL.

    • WithTheAmerican says:

Yeah yesterday I was confused about the extension posts, I didn’t see any. But hello! These are terrible and make no sense. I can’t believe (but I know they are) they’re real. Wtf was she thinking.

This makes the chin cuff look like a bad choice too, but her dress and face are perfect, so who knows.

  21. Moo says:

Eh, who cares? She’s gorgeous! I’d wear those hair extensions if I could look like her!

    • Wyatt says:

I agree with you MOO, Angelina dont care about hair extensions, she care about 5 teenagers in the house at one time!!!!

  22. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Those extensions should’ve accompanied the chin cuff.

  23. Carmen says:

I don’t give a damn about her extensions and I’m betting Angie didn’t either. She looked fabulous in that dress and she seemed to be having a good time. End of story.

  24. DiegoInSF says:

Angie, you need to get JLo’s team, her extensions are the gold standard (see: SuperBowl)

  25. Dorky says:

Why are y’all blaming her team? Is she not able to check the results in the mirror herself? She is a grown woman. Same thing with Megsy not noticing a price tag was hanging out of her dress on that one tour. Personal responsibility, for goodness sakes.

    • florencia says:

Jesus, god forbid anyone ever walk out with a hair out of place in your presence!

    • MsIam says:

It wasn’t a price tag. It was a care label. Whoever prepped Meghan’s outfit should have removed it but honestly it wasn’t viewable looking straight on, it was seen when she was walking downstairs. Also, Angelina”s head doesn’t swivel 360° hence why she has a dresser. Not hard to understand and nothing to do with personal responsibility but gee thanks for the lecture.

  26. Beth says:

I think of Angelina as sorta a perfectionist and can’t believe she didn’t notice those wretched hair additions before her walk out!😱

  27. Kay says:

It surprises me no one noticed or said anything about her extensions. Her team are paid by her so they should be doing their job. Even her paid assistant who is always with her – the blond one who has been with her for years could have said something. I also think her nails are too long – she always seems to be wearing them at movie premieres now. She looks best when she is full Hollywood glamour and a more classical look. I think Zendaya has a great stylist Law Roach.

  28. Katebush says:

Not a good look and I’m sure she didn’t know what they looked like or she wouldn’t have worn them.
Maybe they stood out more when photographed is all I can think but you would expect a team of paid professionals to do a better job!

  29. Grant says:

Yeah, those extensions look horrible. Angelina is beautiful but even she can’t pull that off. It’s a real shame too b/c I love the dress (finally, a shape!)–looks like she’s been dipped in liquid silver. If the extensions didn’t look so budget I would have LOVED the long goddess hair too. Such a shame.

IDK if Angelina would have caught this though. Remember a few years when she had that makeup faus pax on the red carpet? Something with the flashbulbs emphasizing all the white powder on her face.

  30. Margo says:

Why? Her own hair is lovely and it would have looked PERFECT.

  31. florencia says:

I mean, this made me laugh and I adore Angelina! It’s like a teen girl’s first time using clip ins, and it’s kind of nice to know that even Angelina is mortal! I hope she takes it in stride and that no one on the team gets in trouble, she still looked like a goddess regardless!

  32. Kkim says:

I wondered if it was originally supposed to be up in a super long pony tail or braid (which would have looked amazing with that dress) and she nixed it last minute ? She almost always has her hair down so maybe having it pulled back was out of her comfort zone

  33. L4frimaire says:

Those extensions are terrible. Why did they do that to her?

  34. #facts says:

And yet again Angelina has the tongues wagging! Lol just like the Leg thing a few years back and was mocked and now you have people doing the same stance. The way she flossed that dress and did the statuesque pose it will become a factor. I love Angie but I got the feeling her hair may or may not have been purposedly done. However when I watched the video her asst was trying to fix it and then Angie flung it onto her shoulder. I bet she gets a good laugh at how people are invested in whatever she does and says! Tel me what star in HW has that influence?

  35. Robert says:

Forget the hair. What I can’t take are the gigly girly poses. Angi is a really strong woman. I can understand being happy. But those poses are damsel in distress. Waiting to the strong knight to come rescue her. I know she gets a lot of crap for being a strong woman. But don’t stop being you because of that.

  36. Monica says:

I’m kind of mortified at how much the extension fail is bothering me. It’s just hair, ffs, on a celebrity no less. Who cares? But it’s like the world doesn’t make sense or something. I need to get a grip! 🤣

  37. BBAquey says:

Maybe the extensions were to cover the ‘binding’ tattoo ? She might be in the process of getting it removed or changed and it’s not very good looking and makeup to cover it would be weird looking under the bright lights.

  38. Cat77 says:

She doesn’t gaf that is why. I am surprised she shows up for any of holllywoods events.

  39. DenTom says:

If you concentrate on how bad the extensions are, it’s easier to overlook how anorexic she looks.
