Jay-Z worried that Rihanna is on a “downward slide”

Jay-Z is worried about his friend and protégé Rihanna. Even though there were rumors Jay and RiRi were getting busy, I tend to think Jay is like an overprotective brother to Rihanna - and this story seems in line with that. Apparently, Jay is worried that Rihanna has been partying too much, staying out too late, and generally losing her “professional edge”. Jay is concerned that RiRi has been in a “downward slide” ever since Chris Brown beat the crap out of her - so Jay has assigned a bodyguard to look after her, according to the Enquirer.

Rapper Jay-Z thinks success has gone to Rihanna’s head - so he’s hired a bodyguard to watch over his chart-topping protégé.

The Grammy-winning hip-hop artist “invested his heart and soul into transforming Rihanna into a superstar,” an insider told The ENQUIRER.

“Now he’s outraged because she’s out clubbing most every night. He thinks she’s losing her professional edge.”

Music mogul Jay-Z plucked Rihanna from obscurity in2004, signing her to his former record label Def Jam.

She scored huge hits with “Umbrella” and “SOS,” but in February, the 21-year-old Barbados-born singer made worldwide headlines after a brutal attack by her former boyfriend, Chris Brown.

Her behavior since then has Jay-Z, so concerned that he recently assigned one of his own bodyguards exclusively to Rihanna, said the source.

“Jay-Z’s take is that Rihanna’s been on a downward slide ever since the Chris Brown beating,” the source said.

“He wants to keep an eye on Rihanna to make sure she doesn’t wind up in trouble. He’s unhappy that she appears to prefer partying to making music.”

After the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 13, Rihanna partied up a storm at New York City hotspots 1OAK and Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club. Days before, she was seen throwing back shots at M2 Ultralounge in the Big Apple.

Wonder if the party guard’s joining in the festivities?

[From the National Enquirer]

I tend to think there’s a lot of truth to this story. Rihanna has been out a lot lately - there are new photos of her entering or exiting clubs on a daily basis, she gets into all of the hot fashion shows, and she seems to think her job is “fashion trendsetter” rather than “working pop star”. I do think that Jay’s interest is probably as much financial as it is brotherly - after all, Rihanna is still a product Jay’s trying to successfully market. I also think Jay’s got a right to be concerned - I’m kind of worried about Rihanna too. I think she didn’t deal with the Chris Brown situation properly, and I worry that the two of them are still in contact. Perhaps that’s another reason the bodyguard was hired - to keep Rihanna away from douche bag abusers, because that girl obviously has horrible judgment on that front.

  1. Rihanna’s problem is, is that she’s so full of herself there is no room for anyone else. She’s becomming trashy and fake. (Blonde hair? not quite, it’s more yellow than blonde) She’s skanking-out ya’ll! :)

  2. That’s been my growing take on Rhianna, all “style” and no substance.

  3. The whole thing with Brown was bad. BUT I am not going to blame him exclusively for her current actions. She is way too obsessed with shocking people with her edgy (translation-fashion forward streetwalker) wardrobe and being seen and it is becoming harder and harder to believe that she will be able to duplicate the success of her last album.

I am not really into her music though so it does not make me that sad.

  4. I really don’t know about this report. It seems to me that all the ‘examples’ of her downward spiral are things that I remember from before the incident, too.

    Clubs, regularly? -Check!
    Fashion, outrageous? -Check!

Now, it wouldn’t be a shock if she was less interested in making music than in spending her millions. What 21 year old with seemingly endless money wouldn’t? I just think it’s a big leap to imply we’re looking at a total collapse.

  6. I sorta agree with JayZ’s feelings, the only thing is that I don’t think Rihanna is much of a talent. As-a- matter-of-fact, I think she’s transforming herself into what I always thought she was: a walking gimmick. She’s way more interesting as a person than as a singer.

Her primary issue is that she’s not very businessminded, and she doesn’t have the record sales or money generating power to back up her reputation. Maybe she just thinks being famous will compensate for a lack of talent. It’s worked for Madonna for almost 30 years. If only Rihanna had her business accumen.

  7. I agree with V, that Riri is more of a star than a singer. However, so was Britney and she had a great run (and is bouncing back quite well).

It’s undeniable that Rihanna has some great hits — both solo and collaborations. I wager that everyone has at least 1 Rihanna track in their iPod. Can’t say that about Chris Brown or most singers.

  8. Iggles you wagered wrong. There is no way Rihanna is making it on to my Ipod. Now I would wager that almost everyone has a jay-z song…man is not my favorite as a person but he can put out music.

  9. @E…I agree with both of your comments…and I also agree with Guest…Beyonce need to watch this very closely..Jay is a married man that have signed other female artist and allowed them to fall by the way side and I am also sick and tried of ppl blaming all of this on Chris Brown because like someone said earlier she was doing this before the incident now the clothing took on another form but the partying she was doing that before…

  10. Too bad Jay-Z couldn’t stop her from bleaching her hair. She needs a hot oil treatment or something.

I agree with the “start” comment. Jay-Z is just protecting his investment. Older celebs should look out for the younger ones. I definately don’t want to see Rhi shaving her head or showing her crotch to everyone. Britney should have had a Jay-Z looking out for her!

  14. She’s 21!

what were you doing at 21?

I believe my face was in a toilet puking up my evening’s acquisitions, after which I would look through the amount of phone numbers I’d collected, get three hours of sleep and still make it to work at the crap job that I had at the mall the next day, and then a cram session to get ready for my 19th century Russion lit class, or somethign like that.

Oh, the dexterity to be young.

I’m sure she’s fine, but I agree, Chris Brown should be kept far far away from her (or any other young lady.)

  15. @ Praise totally agree. I don’t care for any of their music enough fo it to be on my ipod.

  16. Rihanna is ratchetiing up the see through clothing which equates to “Brittney” watch part deux, in my book. She’s been through some major trauma and this is the result. JZ needs to be on top of this stat.

  17. I think there’s some overreaction going on here. The girl has been through a trauma, of course she won’t be the same! If she wants to go to clubs and party and let her hair down, then why not? She’s only 21 for goodness sake. She’s got fame, she’s got money and at least she’s not being carted out of those clubs unconscious or high or totally out of it. She walks in, she walks out. I can’t see a problem here.

And with regards to her sudden interest in high fashion; I think it’s all part of the publicity machine that’s kicking in for her new album. Every day of the last week she’s been on blogs, websites and even some news channels. Why? What she’s wearing. Plus she’s at Paris Fashion Week. If you can’t wear extreme high end fashion there then when can you wear it?

  22. Her fashion is as bad as her music. Her voice sounds like she has a nasal problem… I don’t see why her music is better than mine - and I can’t hit a note.

  23. I know that Jay-z do read the blogs so here is one for you Jay-z. Rihanna is not your problem your wife is and if by any chance you are really concern why not have her parents come and look after her, especially her mom. I just can’t seem to understand you spending all this money on her as if she is your wife or real blood. You can fool some of the people some of the time and most of the people most of the time but you can’t fool me old man. Rihanna knows what she is doing believe that she is parading around like the whore she is and was back home. The good girl gone bad image is what she’s doing now being a sluggish whore that she really is. When she was with Chris at least that image was maintain. How was she able to purchase that manison that she has(wink wink)

  24. Every time her song’s played, I cringed and immediately switch the station. The nasal voice and the repetitive lyrics annoy me to no end. And please, she’s not setting any trend by trying to be edgy and punk. She just dresses weirdly.
