Jake Gyllenhaal ‘has no interest’ in Taylor Swift’s drama, he’s ‘ignoring’ it

"The Lost Daughter" Red Carpet - The 78th Venice International F

Taylor Swift’s fans were certainly in their feelings about the release of Red (Taylor’s Version) and the short film for “All Too Well,” the song and video for which are just a straight narrative retelling of Taylor’s three-month relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal. Taylor has been getting a lot of credit for being part of the cultural wave of women reassessing and analyzing their past experiences and relationships with a new lens, and calling out old, toxic behavior. Personally, I do see both sides of this “All Too Well” debate: I think Jake is a sleazy guy who prefers to date under-25s, and I also think that obsessively holding on to all of this energy eleven years later is not the healthiest thing for Taylor or her fans.

Speaking of Taylor’s fans, Jake hasn’t posted anything on his Instagram in nearly a month. I halfway think that he has a media team running the account anyway, and they accidentally left the comments open on his old posts. Yes, the Snake Fam has gone onto his IG and they’ve been leaving comments for a while. But Jake is not extremely online, nor does he seemingly engage with fans or haters. Which is probably how he’s blocking everything out. From E! News:

With new scathing lyrics like “I’ll get older but your lovers stay my age” and “You said if we had been closer in age maybe it would have been fine / and that made me want to die,” the song can certainly trigger a response from anyone.

Although Swifties are still in a reeling over re-recorded tune—not to mention its accompanying short film starring Dylan O’Brien and Sadie Sink—and dissecting each Easter egg, a source close to Jake tells E! News that the 40-year-old actor is paying no mind at all.

“Jake has no interest in any of it,” the insider shares. “He doesn’t read gossip or pay any attention to that.”

The source adds of Jake, “He’s living his life and focused on himself. He’s ignoring all of the noise.”

[From E! News]

Yeah, honestly? Good for him. I mean, I think he’s a dirty-assed sleazeball, he has every right to simply ignore Taylor and disengage from her drama. Now, how aware is he really? I doubt he’s Googling himself constantly, but he’s probably seen some of it. I mean, some of it is on his timeline, and we already know that he cares enough to deny that he’s a filthy non-bather. Hm.

Oh, and apparently Jake has a cat? And his cat has an Instagram? And his cat told people to stop cyberbullying? OH MY GOD. Snake Fam, were you truly cyberbullying a cat?

    Aww, Kim’s old face…

  2. Abby says:

    Lol this story is funny.

I really think Taylor is not trying to start stuff with Jake…I think the fans are cray. I say that as a fan. Getting mad at Jake NOW is just silly. This is an old song about an old relationship, and the song is getting a revival for her to reclaim her music, and as a gift to fans. Not to start drama with the ex.

Good for Jake for steering clear. I don’t hate him, I think he was a part in her story and it’s just getting brought up again.

    • BlinkB says:

Am I the only one that found the short film really cringey to watch? Putting the yucky truth to one side (because I never understood why he dated someone so young), this short film is really bad. The writing is awful, and Sadie Sink isn’t conveying this character well at all. She comes across incredibly spoiled and self-centred, which detracts from what I think Swifty is trying to say. Unless of course, she’s actually making a statement about her own behaviour, in which case, I admire her lack of ego. But I doubt that’s it lol

      • Tisme says:

Im not a Jake fan at all, but I found the film super cringey…like I had second hand embarrasment.

      • Penguin says:

I actually think that was her point. She was trying to portray the girl as someone over sensitive and immature who enters a relationship with a man who should’ve known better. Then inevitably tragedy ensues. But maybe I’m giving her too much benefit.

      • Case says:

Big Taylor fan, hated the short film (except for the end with her turning the experience into a novel, which was cool). It was like a student film version of Marriage Story. Really just…not good. I would like to think she was commenting that they both had their flaws in the relationship, because Sadie’s character was whiny and immature, but I’m not sure if that was Taylor’s intent or not.

    • Louise says:

I agree. This wouldn’t be happening if Taylor had been able to buy the rights to her songs. I don’t think she’s trying to start anything w/ Jake. But I do think she’s leaning into the drama a bit because that’s what’s going to make her record gain more attention and sell better.

I love Taylor’s music, but I do find the over-the-top reaction of a lot of fans way out of line. They’re not ‘helping’ Taylor by basically bullying Jake online. Even is he was/is an egotistic ass.

      • Cate says:

Surely she could have re-recorded this song in a less dramatic fashion if she wasn’t looking to stir shit up? If this was just about re-establishing her rights, record the song in its original shorter form and skip the damn video. Sure, her fans are clamoring for it but she is not obliged to give them everything they want. Honestly, with a song like this that is so specifically about a particular person, I feel like the re-recording should have almost come with an explicit request from Taylor to please remember that she has moved on from this relationship and doesn’t want new drama. I love her music and LOVE how she advocated for herself but this particular re-recording feels like a real regression, not a celebration.

      • Bo Peep says:

@Cate Definitely, she’s not missing the opportunity to use the drama to market this. 2 mvs with actors that resemble Jake and one remix while making rounds on talk shows promoting the 10 minute version that incidentally reveals specific details about their relationship… she’s not just promoting her work but the gossip behind it. Or rather, the gossip has always been a vehicle to promote her work.

I wish people would give her credit for that, instead of pretending that’s not what she’s doing with all these Easter Eggs.

As someone who’s always been a fan of her work but not necessarily of her image/marketing (even though I think that’s where she excels the most), things like this make me cringe. But I know it inspires more devotion and spending from her target audience, and that’s ultimately what matters to Taylor and her team. And Red Taylor’s Version has already surpassed Evermore’s first week sales and beaten Folklore’s streaming numbers on Spotify.

    • simmons says:

Of course she’s over it. But that is not the point. The point is that she is playing dirty by actively stirring up shit with retrospective narrative. Now I know why a lot of people criticize her of playing victim. She doth seems to protest too much. Oddly though, what she is doing is actually the opposite of being a victim; by promoting her re-recording and demoting her old master, and by doing so at the expense of other people, she is the aggressor. But she manages to play up the victimhood to suit her narrative.

  3. Heat says:

Even if he isn’t on social media, himself, I’m sure someone in his orbit has spilled the tea to him.

Is this really about holding onto a past hurt for 11 years? I see nothing wrong with analyzing and learning from past hurts; plus she’s re-releasing the entire album, not just the one song. If it resonates with long-standing fans, and creates new ones, I see it as a smart business move as well.

    • STRIPE says:

I agree here. She’s not dragging all this out for no reason 11 years later. She is rereleasing her album and trying to generate publicity for it so people buy/stream Taylor’s Version to devalue the originals. So yes, the album and the material in it are being rehashed but it’s not about her obsessing over Jake, it’s about her business.

As always though, I think she could say something to her fans and ask them to get out of Jake’s social media.

      • CROOKSNNANNIES says:

Totally agree. I don’t think Taylor urges her fans to lash out at people, but I think she could. -and should- make a statement about why it’s wrong and ask them to stop it.

It does make me wonder about ultra-fans. Can you imagine being so caught up in a fandom you went after people? I guess that’s the “parasocial” element they’re talking about but damn.

      • BothSidesNow says:

@ CROOKSNNANNIES, not that I listen to her music, but she has a responsibility to tell her fans to leave him alone. I understand she wants to re-release her old catalog due to the ownership rights, but do it responsibly.

    • Cat C says:

I agree she’s just releasing her collection to get her music back. There is nothing to respond to.

    • Concern Fae says:

Two videos, deliberately cast with actors resembling Jake, one 15 minutes long and premiered in a movie theater, and a double length SNL performance is more than just rereleasing old material. Now she’s apparently releasing a new, “Sad Girl Autumn” version of the 10 minute All Too Well.

It’s kind of sad, really. With Folklore and Evermore, she really seemed to be ready to be a fully adult artist and sit at the big kids table. Going back to her old music and getting that rush of fan attention seems to have gotten her back on her old shit. She can’t quit it.

Making a huge deal of the scarf, which Jake’s sister Maggie has said she has no recollection of is also something that takes it into the dwelling realm. Somebody (besides me) really needs to start talking about how Swift’s constant Easter Egging and teaching fans to search for secret meanings in everything she does and says seems like a real precursor to QAn*n. Did she prime her fans to be susceptible to someone else coming along offering the same sort of fix? Did someone see that there was potential for doing the same sort of thing, but very evil? If I were advising her, it would be to never ever do secret meanings or Easter eggs again.

      • sunny says:

I totally believe this isn’t a thing for him but he for sure has heard about it from people in his life. As for Taylor, recording her work was about claiming ownership, and taking control and she rightly saw this as a business opportunity. Some of these over the top actions are from publicity but the extent to which she has taken it with the videos and casting are really excessive and sad. It is very, “You’re going to think about me when I’m gone” and his vibe, “I didn’t think about you when you were here”.

Anyway, the Jake ex tea I would be much more interested in knowing about was his relationship with Kristen Dunst. Now that is a story I would love to hear all about given the drama/gossip around their relationship.

      • Leslie says:

Re the Easter egging: okay but then you could say the same thing about Marvel who throws in Easter eggs all the time into their movies and trailers and such. Or FNAF. Or other video games and TV shows. I don’t think it’s fair to throw that criticism at Taylor when loads of other properties throw in Easter eggs for fans to solve.

      • Andrew's Nemesis says:

Easter Egging goes back to Henry James. It’s really not a new phenomenon, or Swift-specific.

      • Penguin says:

Comparing Taylor Swift to Qanon seems like a bit of a stretch no?

      • simmons says:

@Penguin, not at all. The Taylor operation is not entirely unlike to what a cult is running. And I don’t see what she’s doing with 10 min All To Well as sad. I see a canny business woman promoting her products at the expense of other people. She is applying retrospective narrative. What Jake does after his breakup with her is his private business. She shouldn’t abuse her power. Imagine someone else sings a diss track at her expense. Oh, wait, Katy did. And what was her response? She flooded Sportify with her old songs when Katy released Witness in 2016.

    • superashes says:

Yeah, we don’t do this with any other artist that wrote a love song and re-recorded it years later. I don’t think it is any deeper than that. She had to re-record her masters to carve the financial benefit out of Scooter’s deal to sell them a few months back, and she is just releasing the video and the long rumored ten minute version of the song as promotion. Nothing more.

    • Legalese says:

The whole thing about Taylor not having the rights to her songs is so overblown to me. 99.9% of artists, including almost all of the big name artists, do not own their masters. To even be in a position to purchase them is a privilege – they are insanely expensive. Yet Taylor is the only one who has made herself out to be a victim of this. Maybe in her crusade against Scooter Braun she could have also made it a larger issue about the need to reform the music industry and how it preys on young, broke artists. But as far as I know, she’s only ever made it all about her.

      • Beach Dreams says:

        Completely agreed.

      • Karine Kerr-Gillespie says:

Nope. The Beatles and Michael Jackson also tried to back back their masters and spoke about it. And it’s not because something is the norm that it shouldn’t be changed. “We’ve always had poverty, murder, homelessness and diseases, why make a big deal about it?”

      • OriginalLala says:

…and this is why I always struggle with Taylor, even though I like her music alot – she really struggles with stepping outside of herself. Someone of her status, power and wealth could be leading the charge to change the industry, to make things better for those coming up in the future, but she turned the whole Masters issue into a personal vendetta.

      • stagaroni says:

If Taylor Swift was a man we wouldn’t be having this conversation. She didn’t want anyone else profiting off her music, so she re-recorded and is releasing her albums. It is a brilliant move.

      • SomeChick says:

an artist owning their master recordings should not be considered a privilege. that is the essential point here.

  4. Selene says:

As he should, there’s no need to engage at all.

    • Sudie says:

@Selene, I agree. If he responded or engaged it would bring him down to Taylor’s level of being immature and childish in her romantic relationships. She’s done it with just about every guy she’s been involved with. Hopefully for Joe Alwyn’s sake, they stay together because I’m sure if he breaks up with her, she will destroy him with her songs.

    • Isabellla says:

If I had an ex that obsessed, I’d feel like he was stalking me. So many years later! Taylor is strong and powerful and more famous than he is by now. It’s enough already.

  5. yokoohno says:

I’ve never liked Taylor that much, I was always pro Kanye out of the two of them – yikes look how that went (although I still agree Beyonce had a better video.) ANYWAY (lol) I’m actually with Tswift on this one. Men get away with so much bad behaviour bc we’re conditioned to keep quiet, to be polite in a way that protects them, while being convinced that’s taking the high road etc.

Yes it’s been eleven years but women are allowed to look back with a new lens and recognize and call out shitty behaviour. If Jake wants to be taken seriously, then leading on and gaslighting young 20-something women isn’t the way.

How many guys are out there like Jake that pretend to be against the patriarchy UNTIL it doesn’t benefit them, and then they lean back into it. He’s forty so this all looks so much worse. Good, that’s on him.

    • Marilee says:

Where did this narrative about him only dating young women come from? Besides Taylor and his current girlfriend, I think all of the women he’s dated have been reasonably close to his age. He dated a couple of 25 yrs old women in his early 30s, but he’s also dated Reese Witherspoon, Ruth Wilson and Rachel McAdams. Those women are all his peers in age and professional accomplishments.

Also, can someone please explain to me the gaslighting and abuse that has happened? I watched “All to Well” and read the lyrics and he comes across as a pretentious douchebag, but there doesn’t seem to be anything sinister in his behavior. I’m happy to be educated on the matter.

      • sashi says:

I agree @Marilee. Also judging by the narrative, it sounded like Taylor was 20 when they dated and Jake was into his mid-30s at least, the way people talk about the power differential and age gap in their relationship. I checked and he’s actually 9 years older, so he would have been 29. Yes of course 20 is quite young and at that age a difference of 9 years can have significant effects on the relationship dynamics, but unless I’m missing some specific behaviour (which is possible), it seems harsh to call Jake gross, abusive, etc.

  6. ElleE says:

There is no way Jake is posting anything on social media-that is so not “indie”. I like him because here is interesting and talented and flawed and comes from a Hollywood family. He is of that generation of actors that I really like and they are all douchebags, really. I was waiting outside “Of Mice and Men” , watching James Franco and Chris (sorry forget his last name😢) sign autographs for fans waiting on the street after the show and for some reason the thought popped into my head: Jake would never even LOOK at these people. Ha. Some douchebags are easier to like than others.

I can see why a 19-year old Taylor feel hard for him. Jake has that Fountainhead/Rebel Without a Cause thing going on IRL. I liked an aloof, hot, a$$hole back in my day too.

    • lucy2 says:

Out of curiosity I looked, there’s a whole bunch of videos of him signing autographs for fans.

    • Bobbie says:

“I can see why a 19-year old Taylor feel hard for him. Jake has that Fountainhead/Rebel Without a Cause thing going on IRL.”
Does he? I find him a little nerdy. I much rather take his brother-in-law, Peter Sarsgaard, who has in so many roles straddled the line between scary and sexy. 🙂

      • vociferousgirl says:

I wonder how many of us who know Maggie and her work project her image onto him, plus Donnie Darko. Pretty much all I ever knew about him until recently was, “weird kid in Donnie Darko, amazing in brokeback mountain, butt in Jarhead, and Maggie’s brother.” Since she’s amazing, I just assumed he was too?

  7. canichangemyname says:

Why would he? The whole thing is just made-up drama. “Controversy” LOL Evidently, it was a song that her hard-core fans were really into and she’s re-recording her stuff anyway, so this is a career move for her, not an “I’m still hung up on Jake” move. She does have some fans who take ish way too far, but she’s not alone in that. I think it’s abundantly evident they both moved on a looooong time ago.

  8. TIFFANY says:

Naw, I doubt he is giving this much thought.

He is putting all his energy into ruining the 80’s classic Road House.

    Seriously??? How dare???!!!

  9. Size Does Matter says:

Jake throwing out the crusty cat distraction. Nice one.

To me (Gen X) these songs are less-angry versions of You Oughta Know. I also heard You’re So Vain yesterday on the radio. Every generation has these anthems. The difference now is social media.

    • TIFFANY says:

Yeah, but those songs were true guessing games.

It was decades before Carly confirmed it was about Warren.

And Alanis has confirmed it was not about Dave.

There was and is a air of mystery to those classics and Taylor, bless her heart, thinks that she in that category, but she is not.

      • Bettyrose says:

Wait? It’s about Warren and not James Taylor?? How did I miss that?

      • TIFFANY says:

Yup. She released the answer for a charity auction.

      • lucy2 says:

I don’t think Carly ever confirmed, but I’ve always assumed it was Warren.

Taylor’s definitely not subtle when it comes to her song lyrics, but that’s up to her. I don’t take any issue with her rerecording her old songs, I think it’s a good way to gain back ownership and take a stand. The whole movie thing about the song was a bit much, but eh. And I don’t blame Jake for not acknowledging it, it’s a no win situation, so the best thing is to wait it out. All this will die down soon.

      • MissMarirose says:

Wait. What? I thought she confirmed it IS about Dave Coulier.

      • Sudie says:

Lol. I always heard it was about Mick Jagger but Warren certainly fits the bill much better.

      • osito says:

@Sudie, She was with Mick Jagger at the time (he sings back up!), so maybe that’s where the confusion came in. I’ve always heard that it was Warren Beatty, with some minor James Taylor hints.

@all, personally, this song gives me heavy “Case of You” and “Diamonds and Rust” vibes.

    • Blue300 says:

Probably lesser remembered now but it was a big hit when it came out, but Evanescence’s “Call Me When You’re Sober,” was written about, her, Amy Lee’s ex Shaun Morgan from Seether. Which was well known.

  10. NCWoman says:

Is it healthy to talk about emotional abuse? Yes, it is. And she is not writing a brand-new song about a breakup 10 years after the fact. She at most edited a song that was already 10 minutes long that she’d never released–and never would have released if she’d been given an opportunity to purchase her masters instead of having them sold out from under her by a vindictive man to another vindictive man. She’s taking control of her art and her legacy, not going after Jake. And yes, there are a few thousand fans out of several hundred million who are trolls, Making her responsible for the behavior of every fan is a little weird. Most understand that Jake was simply a prompt for her to process emotional pain through her art.

    • L says:

“a few thousand”!?! GIRL how do you say that so casually? hahaha, that is just nutty, not to mention possibly inaccurate, considering we’re talking all the toxic folk of twitter, insta, fb combined, etc etc. its bad if its just *a handful*, whatever that even means! taylor should totally practice some social responsibility and say simply, “hey, this behavior aint it, don’t lash out at others. period.” not for this guy’s sake, dgaf about that, its just wrong to turn a blind eye to these truly parasocial goons that harass people on ones behalf. she otherwise seemingly enjoys it and that is icky as hell. however you slice that, it isn’t a good look at this moment. she has a huge platform to do better! also this isn’t exactly just a taylor thing either, there is toxic fandom everywhere now. but she seems to have some of the worst among her ranks, and it seems she is very, very rarely vocal in combating it. anyway, sorry, /rant :p

  11. smcollins says:

Good for him, and smart. Engaging will only encourage and prolong this nonsense from her rabid fan base. This will all become “yesterday’s news” (again) in no time. As far as his dating record, he may like them young but as long as he’s not actually hooking up or trying to hook up with literally underage girls then whatever…let the man live his life.

  12. Amy Bee says:

Ok. But is showering regularly now? I hope so.

    • detritus says:

eh, only the tears of his sad cat.

Ps. Don’t you wash your pets face ? I always remove anything crusty from my kitties…

  13. Bobbie says:

Because like most people a decade later, he has moved on, if he was ever even that engaged to begin with.

  14. Anne says:

This is a slap in the face to Scooter, not Jake. The song is fantastic. I am not a Taylor fan, I just sorta like her, but those are the facts. The fact that Sleazy Jack got slapped again in the process is just a cherry on the top.
Passage of time does not absolve a person of being a dip… He was and still is. And this goes to all men, not just him.
And LOL at that thing that he is chill and does not care. Of course, he does.
He could have made a joke about all this, or perhaps sent her freaking scarf back. This “I am just silent and not interested but I will use my publicists and my cat to let you know how unbothered” schtick is laughable.

    • simmons says:

How can say it does not affeck Jake when he is the subject of the song and is the subject of the abuse her fans direct by her encouragement? It is so easy for you to say simply because you are not in his shoes, but just a bystander! I see through her now. She is an abuser, only she plays the victim so good because she is a woman of mid America.

  15. Lory says:

I like how the discussion focuses on if Taylor has grown up and learned from her experience. Jake is still dating women half his age.

  16. LA says:

I’m no TS apologist nor Swiftie, but the fact is that one of the people from that relationship is now in a healthy long-term relationship while the other is, as stated in the song, still dating people half his age. So…is he really not engaging? Not sure I’m buying that. As for her…she has every right to share her experiences through her art. There is not statute of limitations on sharing your history…which will inevitably be from your perspective.

    • Rie says:

Jake has been in a long-term relationship for four years, FYI.
And we don’t know the health status of either of these relationships.

    • Ann says:

Jake has dated people his own age or older, at least twice on a long term basis (Kirsten Dunst and Reese Witherspoon). The fact that he has also dated or is dating younger women doesn’t change that.

I like the song. I liked the video too, but the situation is being told from the perspective of Taylor/Sadie and not Jake/Dylan. I think there is plenty of room for interpretation there. Maybe he was a douche about it, but maybe she was a little too needy for him too? The part where she is upset that he didn’t pay attention to her at a dinner party…..I think that’s a pretty murky area.

I’m all for women calling out bad behavior in men, but we don’t know the whole story. I do think she’s gotten a little too specific with this one. She has a right to do it and clearly her fans love it, but I think it’s a bit much. And again, I really like the song and thought her performance on SNL was great.

  17. JT says:

Were Jake and Taylor really only together for 2 months? I assumed they were together for a lot longer for all the attention that she’d given it. I mean, a 10 minute song and a short film to go along with it is a lot. Hell, she was with Calvin for much longer and I don’t think she’s written about him. I don’t begrudge Taylor for writing about her life, but I just don’t understand how a 2 month relationship turned into all this.

    • smcollins says:

It’s rumored that JG was Taylor’s “first” and that’s why the relationship effected her the way it did (the red scarf is apparently a metaphor for her virginity), despite how brief it was. He (allegedly) got her to give up her virginity to him and then dumped her. We have no idea of course if any of that is true, but that’s the rumor, and I’m a little disappointed in myself that I even know that much lol.

    • Rie says:

Not even 2 months. It was 6 weeks from SNL to her birthday breakup. She’d met him just before SNL at a dinner party with Goop and Chris Martin but all reporting at the time indicated their first actual date was the SNL weekend and Taylor’s own easter eggs to the relationship don’t extend to back before the SNL apple-picking latte-sipping weekend.

    • Jennifer says:

This is a lot of drama for a short duration relationship, indeed.

  18. Keri says:

A lot of people love Taylor and her music here, but I can’t stand her constant drama, her songs, or her voice. I get that writing about her exes is what sells and musicians have all done this. It’s that she’s constantly portraying herself as the victim while never admitting her own part in all the drama and then weaponizing her fan base to go after her targets.

I was disgusted with her bullying of Camilla Belle. The slut shaming song and what her fans did on social media was gross. Was even more disgusted with her behavior with the still in high school Kennedy kid. She’s no saint and that’s fine, but underneath all that girl power squad energy I suspect is a mean girl in disguise who is moderately talented but got where she is today because she had a rich white daddy and connections. Hard pass.

    • Jules says:

so much all of this ^^ …She stirs the pot and encourages her fans to defend her.

    • Bonsai Mountain says:

Same, Keri. She is the poster child for toxic white feminism.

    • Shari says:

I’m always amazed how we can go hard on the man but the woman has to be defended even when she is messy. Taylor is messy. Has always been. and I’ll be honest. Not a fan. I don’t like women that knowingly used their fan base to do the dirty work for them. Jake can date whomever he wants. And just because Taylor is in a long-term relationship at this point so what.

I’m not a fan. If a guys do what she does then we come for them.

      • Beach Dreams says:

Yup, and it’s always women who look like Taylor who get the over-the-top defense, even in moments when she’s blatantly shown her ass.

    • Sudie says:

This so much! Women can be just as messy as men in relationships.

    • Jennifer says:

She is pretty drama. I think of her as a vengeance demon from Buffy a lot of the time.

    • A.Key says:

A lot of people like her but a lot don’t. There’s a reason Hiddleston’s popularity never recovered after dating her – it’s because people thought LESS of him for going for someone like her.

  19. Case says:

There’s a lot of evidence that All Too Well isn’t even about Jake (the song was copyrighted before they started, err, “dating” and he owned the scarf before he met her, lol), so bless him for putting up with this from crazed fans, honestly.

Taylor isn’t doing rerecords to stir up old drama, but she’s also not steering clear of the drama either. She didn’t have to make a short film where the dude looked and dressed like Jake at the time. It disappoints me that she’s leaning into the past drama in any way because with folklore and evermore, she really grew past that and seems much more mature. She doesn’t need to do this.

    • MEEP says:

Wait….what?! Who is the song supposedly about then? And if it’s not even about him then her portraying him as an emotionally abusive asshole in the video, sorry “short film”, is actually really sh!tty of her.

When I looked up pictures of the scarf I though that it was probably his originally so I’m not surprised by that!

Taylor had a real opportunity to showcase just how much she’s matured in the last decade but instead she’s just leaning into all the old drama. But what’s really disappointing is everyone is going “YAAS QUEEN” about it and starting the “any criticism of anything Taylor does is misogyny” nonsense again. Ugh.

    • A.Key says:

Honestly, it doesn’t matter who the song is about, what matters is how you sell it. And the approach she’s taken here works really well for her bank account. Nobody would give a crap if this was about some random lame douche who’s not famous. In order for her to make money she needs to date and then trash famous men in songs because that’s her MO and the reason she became famous in the first place.

  20. Diana says:

He just seems like the worlds coldest narcissist. I do not get this attraction at all!

  21. Nicole says:

I really have no dog in this fight but I will say that when they were dating I felt he was too old and sophisticated for her. I too am concerned at the level of energy devoted to a 3 month relationship so long ago. It seems like when she falls she falls hard.

    • MelOn says:

That’s what I thought. This will not end well because he’s too old and has seen WAY more than she has, he’ll get bored eventually and… here we are.

    • Claudia says:

This – especially because it was right after his relationship with Reese Witherspoon, who is a couple years older than him and a mother of two.

  22. JustMe says:

All i got out of the video was that Taylor seems to think a piggy back ride on a guy is what couples do…I’ve seen her do it with others too. So strange to me lol

    • Jennifer says:

My improv teacher said not to piggyback–too many people get surprise hurt when someone randomly hops on your back!

  23. Sofia says:

Unpopular Opinion but I don’t think Taylor cares as much as her fans say she does. All Too Well is a very popular song so of course she’s going to capitalise that. I’m not saying she doesn’t have feelings about the relationship that may be stronger than some of her other exes because he was probably her first love and re-recording the album brought back some of those feelings she though were gone but what I’m trying to say that she’s playing it all up more because it’ll cause speculation and coverage in the media which will translate into streams and all. Taylor is a very good business women and I wouldn’t be surprised if most of this was strategic rather than feelings.

  24. MelOn says:

I don’t blame him, it happened years ago and he’s moved on. He doesn’t have to have public conversations about a what he thought was a private relationship. T-Swift’s fans are batcrap crazy and need to leave people alone.

  25. Annie says:

He’s ignoring it? While still having someone within his camp run to the press and talk about how very much he doesn’t care. That’s not ignoring it.

  26. Mina_Esq says:

Judging by Taylor’s lyrics, he is too good for social media and gossip. He’s chilling at some indie concert or talking about some profound book with his hipster friends. Lol

  27. ME says:

He was fantastic in every movie I have seen him in. That’s all I’ve got.

  28. Kitten says:

I don’t understand the controversy? We all made fun of them for being a corny-ass couple and most of us predicted that it wouldn’t last because she was clearly waaaaaay more invested than he was. She absolutely has a right to put out a song about it but the reaction of her fans that “he’s a huge douchebag” is weird to me, as if we’ve never seen that dynamic before. It happens, people. I’ve been in relationships where I was in Taylor’s place and ones where I was in Jake’s place. As far as Jake goes, I don’t care about his hygiene, love his acting, and completely side-eye him for dating someone so much younger than him. *shrugs*

  29. jferber says:

I always thought the “relationship” was fake from the start and that he is closeted. I could be totally wrong, but that was always my impression. So maybe he’s actually okay with being called a douche by Taylor because it’s still in the straight narrative. Again, just my opinion. Also, he looks excellent in that white suit. I hope he really does wash. How vulgar and stupid if he did not.

  30. virginfangirl says:

People are actually dense if they claim Taylor Swift is not trying to disgrace Jake. Let’s look at the evidence.
-She extends a negative song about him so it’s 10 minutes long,
-She adds a new line in the song, that could only have been written recently, but it’s a jab at his current relationship: ‘I’ll get older, but your lovers stay my age.’ ”.
-Taylor makes a short film depicting Jake treating Taylor like crap.

And then there are people on here believing Jake mentally abused Taylor based on ONE person’s (Taylor’s) opinion. This might be easier to believe if she hasn’t written about being treated so badly & scarred by other 10 minute relationships as well. Damn, she even managed to shame Hiddleston in a song, insinuating he was a fool for thinking he was more than a rebound & should have expected her to cheat. He pissed her off somehow too it seems.

It’s actually more likely she is so used to everyone kissing her behind that when a guy has the audacity to not like everything about her or dare to break up with her she goes into revenge mode.

They call this an unreliable narrator in books.

  31. Emily says:

I disagree with calling this Taylor Swift drama.

She released the longer version of the song for her fans and says it belongs to them. It’s a song many fans care about and she’s catering to them. Releasing it does NOT mean she is emotionally engaged with the lyrics anymore or still stirring drama.

    • simmons says:

Oh, please. Either you are naive or you are tone deaf. This is so obviously a shrewd business move by a shrewd business woman. She did this to maximaze her new re-recording and minimize her old master value. And yet, she did this at the expense of another person. Disgusting behaviour of hers.

  32. g says:

She is pathetic. You’d think with her fame and wealth she would have better things to invest her efforts into. Clearly, money doesn’t buy class.

  33. A.Key says:

Yeah but she is not “reassessing and analyzing past experiences and relationships with a new lens” she is just trying to make shitloads of money, that’s it. That’s why the whole thing is so off-putting to me and it cements my belief she is essentially as sleazy as him, they were well matched. Also she’s dated and dumped many people just like him, pot kettle here.
