Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello are over after two-and-a-half years

Someone said Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello had been together for six years and I really had to sit here and think about whether my perception of time is irretrievably broken. Turns out, my mind isn’t broken (yet). Shawn and Camila got together officially in the late spring/early summer of 2019. As soon as they began dating, the pap strolls and thirstiness really began in earnest. A lot of people blamed Camila for the thirstiness, but hey, Shawn was totally fine with it, and I think he enjoyed being part of a hot “It Couple.” But all good things must come to an end and here we are, two and a half years later. Shawnmila is no more:

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s friendship is “stronger than ever” but the same cannot be said of their relationship.

On Wednesday, Nov. 17, the pop stars announced that they have broken up after dating for more than two years. Camila and Shawn wrote on their respective Instagram Stories, “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started out relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”

[From E! News]

Both Shawn and Camila posted that exact statement on their IG Stories, so… I mean, the logistics of the break up was that one of their publicists negotiated with the other’s publicist to get the wording just right. Shawn and Camila lasted longer than I thought they would, and they managed to live together during the pandemic and not drive each other crazy, which I also did not expect. This has the feel of a (showmance-y) relationship which just ran its course and perhaps outlived its usefulness. They never struck me as one of Gen Z’s great romances, but who knows.

That dude is really not into wearing shirts.

  2. Miss Margo says:

I never truly believed they were together to begin with.

  3. dina says:

I mean…. I didn’t think they were ever really together to begin with, soooo *shrug*

also.. is it just me, or does she always look VERY stoned? haha

    • Miss Margo says:

I just said the same thing haha. I mean, how can a couple have so little chemistry?! Lol!

    • mia girl says:

Can’t speak to the nature of how “together” they really were (romantic or not) but I can say they were together a lot.

I live in same residential/suburban area in Miami where she & her parents live and daily sightings of the two of them were the norm. Walking their dog, at supermarket, local restaurants, farmers market etc. He lived with them for a pretty extended period of time. They always looked like they were very close.

I wonder who’ll get the Calm app in the split.

  5. Fuzzy Crocodile says:

2020 felt like 5 years, so maybe that’s the time confusion for some people. I also think 2019 was last year.

  6. Amy Bee says:

    I forgot they were together.

  7. atorontogal says:

I know him, only because he’s Canadian. But who is CC? (ps…I’m old, don’t judge!)

    • Léna says:

A singer who used to be in a group, and she is pretty racist

      • Lyds says:

He has also made racially problematic tweets before, and neither of them have had to really answer for it. CC “apologized” when her deplorably racist online rants came to light, but I don’t believe she ever truly acknowledged what Normani said about her.

If two (hopefully former) racists can’t make it work…

      • Léna says:

Wow I had no idea about his problematic tweets, I’ll go check this out

    • Keats says:

Genuinely love Canadians’ ability to identify famous people as Canadian!

    • Grant says:

She was in Fifth Harmony if that jogs your memory at all. Had a few hits: “Havana,” “Never Be the Same,” and “Senorita” (with Shawn).

  8. KLO says:

I am glad, sadly. Their relationship seemed very toxic by the comments I´ve heard them both make about themselves and each other… I wish them both growth, and all the best in the future. They are both wonderful young people.

    • Keri says:

Wonderful people don’t go out of their way to make intentionally nasty racist comments on social media or encourage their fans to spout racial slurs at their fellow bandmate.

And even with all the over the top PDA, they still didn’t convince anyone they were a real couple.

      • KLO says:

@Keri Uh sorry I forgot about the racism. Thanks for reminding me. But I believe they were a real couple. AS I said, I wish them both growth. 😉

    • Keri says:

Aw man, I hope I didn’t come across as attacking you. It wasn’t my intention. No need to apologize.

I’m just puzzled that this average in looks, not that talented singer/actress keeps getting chance after chance when many would have been canceled a long time ago for spouting just a fraction of the racial nastiness she spewed. Someone said she gives off Lea Michelle vibes and I agree.

      • AndaPanda says:

Seriously, I don’t understand her appeal. I’ve seen a few 5th Harmony performances and I would never have picked her as a standout/breakout. Learning about her unapologetic racism makes me even more befuddled.

  9. Normades says:

I think they were together in some capacity because he spent a lot of time with her family. But I think it was also a mutually beneficial pr relationship. Now that Cinderella is out, contract over.

  10. CROOKSNNANNIES says:

I never really got the Shawn appeal and then I saw the Senorita video and I got it. I like him a lot more than I like her. Meanwhile- I have read her racist posts, I have heard her sing and seen her dance live. She isn’t that talented. And I would not be bringing this up unless it was Hollywood but she’s not amazingly beautiful either, so I’m not exactly sure why she’s such a “star.” (Please keep in mind- this has nothing to do with her recent weight gain. I have just never seen her star power. )

    • Watson says:

Agreed. I don’t understand why her middling songs are on the radio ad nauseum.

    • Beach Dreams says:

From what I’ve seen, she’s got a lot of industry support that started in her girl group days. Even back then, she was highlighted as the star of 5th Harmony…even though the other girls had more pleasant and/or better vocals. Her tone is so off-putting and almost harsh-sounding to me so I don’t really see the talent either. Her people do a great job of putting her out there and getting radio deals for her. But the thing is that most of her hits (at least in the US) have been collaborations. A lot of her music seems to be more popular in other countries (particularly Latin American and European countries) than here in the states.

    • Tiffany :) says:

“I have read her racist posts, I have heard her sing and seen her dance live. She isn’t that talented.”

Yep, pretty much sums it up.

  11. Keira says:

Just listened to CC on Samin Nosrat’s podcast, Home Cooking, discussing what to cook for Thanksgiving.

  12. DuchessL says:

This relationship did nothing for them businesswise. Doesnt seem to have struck the interest of people and it didnt shoot any of them to superstardom paparazzi crazy like britney/justin, benifer & benana, brangelina

  13. MangoAngelesque says:

“Shawmila”? Nooo, what a wasted opportunity for a pun! “Camawn” = c’mon!

Maybe he got tired of her being a bad person, and she got tired of him being a bad dresser 🤷‍♀️

  14. Queen Meghan's Hand says:

    What is love?
If these the electric hot PASSION and INTENSE chemistry of these two can flame out and fizzle up…what hope is there for the rest of us?

  15. steph says:

I never thought Camilla was going to be the breakout of Fifth Harmony. I always thought it’d be Lauren.
Anyway, CC gives off Lea Michele energy.

  16. Cait says:

Both are just as racist and annoying not really spectacularly talented or charismatic either. I always thought Cabello was his beard anyway

  17. Mika says:

Young couple breaks up. Sounds totally normal and healthy.

  18. girl_ninja says:

Do folks know that people can be queer and still be attracted to Camilla/women and be in a relationship?

  19. fhafdkf says:

These two were more believable than Leo DiCaprio and Camila Morrone.
