I am surprised that people do not want to leave a tip, even a few dollars is appreciated. Thank God most people do tip, we depend on it. We split the tips between 3 people. There is more then putting it in the bag. 1st answering phones, calls come in at once, people ask about prices, menu,add-on etc, they keep you on the phone deciding what they want(family wants etc). Sometimes it is hard to understand(cell phones cut out.) It's very important that we get the order and time right or else we get yelled at. People will call and even complain about different time and place. 2nd person works in kitchen, (they prep condiments, sides,bake bread,get drinks) 3rd person delivers to car(in rain,etc)running back to register to run cc, get change, running back out to car. Be compassionate, put yourself in other people shoes. I don't think people realize how much we have to pay even if we don't make it. As a server I have to tip out bar,host,bussers based on sales. If I lose a cc slip or $ we pay it, I have to pay for childcare even if I don't make tips, if I'm sick I don't make money(no paid sick days). Working as a server is physically demanding and the hours are crazy. In this economy, people spend less so we make less. I agree that I need to find another job. I also wish restaurants would pay enough that we could get a paycheck, instead of needing to depend on the kindness of people tipping us. Outback pays takeout servers lower wages. Someone said above that they have to take time to put the food in containers, but that is part of what the restaurant is paying it’s employees for, after the cook is done, it has to go on to something or it would just stay in the kitchen, and another person said the employee has to take time to ring up the purchase, but that is also what they are paid to do, otherwise the restaurant will close. I am not tying to be mean or anything, and no I have never worked in that type of environment, I just need someone to explain why I should tip on take out orders, and please understand I do sympathize that staff survives on tips, BUT I need a reason why I should part with my money other than just pity.
