Ann Coulter: ‘Trump is done, you guys should stop obsessing over him’

During the Biden administration, I’ve given myself the gift of “not paying attention to politics on an hourly/daily basis.” I have faith in Joe Biden, and I’m sure that Uncle Joe will figure his way out of many messes, most of which he inherited. As such, I have no idea if Ann Coulter is really relevant to political commentary in the year of our lord Beyonce 2022? Coulter’s heyday was the Clinton and Dubya Bush eras, and she’s been mostly coasting on being a horrible person ever since. Does Coulter still have a following? Is she still recognized as a leading and important right-wing voice? I doubt it, especially in the current Death Cult/MAGA era. Still, Coulter is trying to tell Republicans something important: your guy is unhinged and you need to give up the ghost.

Conservative pundit Ann Coulter is predicting the end of Donald Trump’s hegemony in the GOP, saying the former president “is done.”

“Trump is done,” Coulter, a onetime Trump booster turned critic, wrote in an email to The New York Times. “You guys should stop obsessing over him.”

Coulter’s comments came in an article published in the Times on Sunday about the mounting tensions between Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) amid speculation of a potential showdown for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. While DeSantis has so far sought to tamp down rumors that he’s angling for a possible White House bid, his rise within the GOP and growing national profile have irked Trump, who sees the Florida governor as owing his political success to him.

Trump also appeared to take a swipe at DeSantis during a recent interview with the conservative One America News Network in which he slammed politicians who won’t say whether they received a COVID-19 booster shot as “gutless.” DeSantis has repeatedly dodged questions about his booster status.

Coulter pounced on Trump over those comments in a tweet last week calling the former president a “liar and con man.”

“EXCLUSIVE: Trump is demanding to know Ron DeSantis’s booster status, and I can now reveal it,” Coulter wrote. “He was a loyal booster when Trump ran in 2016, but then he learned our president was a liar and con man whose grift was permanent. I hope that clears things up.”

[From The Hill]

Wow, I didn’t know that Trump attacked DeSantis about DeSantis’s refusal to confirm whether or not he’d been boostered? That’s wild. It’s very weird that Trump has been making so many pro-vaccine statements in recent months – some would argue that by hyping the vaccines and encouraging people to get vaccinated and boostered, Trump is probably trying to take credit for what the Biden administration has done. But hey, if people get vaxxed because their orange traitor god said so, that’s kind of a good thing (sort of).

Anyway, as for Coulter… she’s assessing this as a longtime GOP political operative – she understands how Republicans will vote, and she actually has a nose for how general elections usually play out. If she wasn’t so vile, I would hate-respect her ability to organically assess the political winds. She’s not making an argument of “Trump should be over because of this and this.” She’s saying that the GOP needs to move on from Trump and find the new monstrous superstar, which she clearly believes is DeSantis.

    1) She’s now castigating him for all the things she loved about him in the first place. So take that with the same sincerity in which she does anything.

    2) She is angling to position the despicable Ron DeSantis for 2024 – also Murdoch/Fox’s plan.

So let’s not think this is anything but AC doing what she does best – promoting AC.

As for 45 promoting vaccines — that’s his game to try and reach slightly less insane GOP voters, particularly women. Same guy, different day, different con.

    • Korra says:

Your #2 point is pertinent here because the big push DeSantis has been receiving the past year or so is because he is now Rupert Murdoch’s golden boy. Additionally, DeSantis has the backing of a lot of Trump’s wealthy donor base and right wing think tanks like the Claremont Institute. So to your point, she is trying to maintain any semblance of relevancy by predicting DeSantis’ rise to power, but anyone who pays attention to politics and the behind-the-scenes stuff already knows this stuff.

  2. Rapunzel says:

Trump is leaning pro-vaxx because the GOP knows their BS is killing off their voting base. Plus, they’re trying to get Dems disappointed with Biden, which anti-vaxx is not gonna do.

But whatever, no way Trump even runs. He won’t risk losing again.

    • observer says:

you see that video of trump getting boo’ed after talking about how his followers should get the vaccine at one of his recent ‘rallies’? hilarious

  3. Erin says:

At this point I’m more worried about deSantis because he understands he can pick up where Trump left off in a much more effective way. Look at what he just did with this election police force nonsense. Imagine that on a national level. I’m terrified.

    • Abby says:

As much as I don’t want Trump again, guys like DeSantis are worse. Trump somehow did a ton of damage, despite being wildly incompetent and hiring incompetent loyalists. He lost because he’s just THAT bad. Like blatantly bad person, bad politics, mishandled the pandemic, etc. It was so over the top that a lot of people could not deny it, even if they were republicans.

Someone even *slightly* smarter and less of an egomaniac will have been taking notes on Trump’s missteps. Someone less distasteful will absolutely have a chance. It’s pretty worrisome to me, living in Texas surrounded by republicans.

But there are still somehow people who think Trump is their God. I have no idea if he’ll win if he runs, but I guarantee he’ll burn the GOP to the ground (again) if he doesn’t win the primary. So who knows.

    • Jananell Gibson says:

Erin you are correct. I live in the Florida Panhandle. He now says no health workers have to be vaccinated. Just the latest. A hateful and spiteful man.

    • Dude says:

I’m in Florida and have been spouting this for the past several years….. he’s the one to be worried about. You nailed it. A nightmare ready to pounce.

    • Korra says:

Politico just did an article about the control Ron DeSantis has gained over the Florida state legislation, which is mostly Republican. DeSantis also has complete control of what state agencies can and cannot do. That is just a warm-up to what he could do at the federal level. Keep in mind that while Trump installed lackeys at federal agencies, he did not have complete control over Congress. Depending on how the mid-terms shape up, if DeSantis is successful at winning in 2024, he could inherit a Republican-controlled Congress, which would make his power grab much swifter and more definitive than Trump could ever imagine. I hope people wake up to this horror show before it is too late, but I worry that we slept on all of this for far too long.

  4. Bettyrose says:

Trump packed the Supreme Court and unleashed a violent white supremacy rage. His legacy will live on far past his time on this earth. I hate discussing him and wish he really were irrelevant now, but that’s the reality.

  5. BothSidesNow says:

DeSantis is just as bad or worse than Drumpf for the American people. DeSantis is gutting Florida, along with a multitude of Repugnant’s, with regards to his stance on vaccinations as well as his continued battling with school districts regarding safety for the teachers.

As for Ann Coulter, let’s hope her message is heard loud and clear for the Repugnant’s to distance themselves from Drumpf. He still has a strong hold on many MAGATS in the country. I am just waiting for when Garland files insurrection against him!! I know it’s a long shot but a girl can dream!

  6. LaUnicaAngelina says:

Trump knows the hardcore GOP extremist base is dying at a rapid pace without vaccines. Now he’s scared.

  7. girl_ninja says:

I bet that Trump has it in mind that because the vaccine was created during his “presidency” that he is responsible. He’s probably angling for a Nobel Prize and thinks that him pumping up the vaccine now shows that he’s pro-science. He is trash and so is DeSantis and so is Coulter.

    • observer says:

there are clips of him from maga rallies where he’s saying something like “we can’t let the left take credit for the vaccine” and basically now he’s telling the maga crowd to get vaccinated in order to “own the libs”. lol

in what world would trump ever be considered for a nobel prize though? even if that were realistic, being nominated would be a scandel the nobel institute wouldnt want to deal with. theyve had enough scandals in recent years…

  8. Emma says:

I’m hoping that the Republicans will tear themselves apart with their infighting… I cannot take how corrupt and cruel people can be. It has been so hard.

  9. WiththeAmerican says:

His voters are dying by the thousands a day now, so Trump was convinced to try to persuade them to live so they can vote Red. The few times he has mentioned vaccination, though, he’s been booed and harassed by his own cult. That’s how indoctrinated he made them against the vaccines.

No one should believe a word he says or AC, they do what is most effective to maintain their own power.

    • observer says:

all this means is that someone who IS willing to pantomime the antivaxx and other conspiratorial talking points is ready to take his place.

of course whoever it is, they’ll secretly be vaxxed.

  10. Miranda says:

Trump might be over, but that’s almost irrelevant at this point. The problem is that he lowered the bar and now Republicans don’t think they can get elected unless they one-up his batshittery.

  11. observer says:

as a young millenial who follows other millenial and gen z political commentators, i never see anyone talk about ann coulter anymore. this is the first time i’ve seen her mentioned in any capacity in ages. she’s not relevant and she certainly doesnt have much sway over the right

  12. Nuks says:

I’m just waiting for Ann Coulter to launch a line of sleeveless tops at Kohl’s.

  13. Tangerine Tree says:

Ann Coulter can hold a grudge for a long time! She insulted one of Trump’s tweets years ago, right before or after he was elected and he wasn’t going to grovel for her support and insulted her right back (I can’t find it bc there is so much about both of them saying awful things). Anyway, there was no one at one of her book signings because of it and there is a photo somewhere of her fuming. She pretended to keep supporting trump as those are the people who buy her books, but she’s hit out at him a couple of times. She says she never cares about what people think of her – not true, lol. She patiently waits to make her attacks on trump, like now.

  14. Mslove says:

I always assumed trump was just conning his base for all their hard earned cash, surely he won’t run again.

  15. Nic919 says:

They saw how Youngkin managed to win and think Desantis will be a trump lite and less unhinged but just as despicable and quieter about it too.

Trump attacked Desantis about the vaccine because he knows Desantis is a viable primary challenge and his ego demands it.

  16. Gab says:

DeSantis is younger and doesn’t do as many crazy tweets. DeSantis could win a primary I feel. I hadn’t heard about AC in years. I kinda thought she didn’t get as much air time anymore because she’s getting older and no longer fits into that Fox News Barbie look, much like most women after a certain age fade from the spotlight.

  17. Maida says:

I expect DeSantis to be the Republican nominee in 2024 and agree with everyone saying that he would be, in many ways, worse than Trump. DeSantis has better self control than Trump does but all the same awful priorities.

Coulter has a sharp eye for the main chance. If she’s bailing on Trump I think other prominent Republicans will do the same.

  18. J+ferber says:

Shocked, but pleased she said this. She’s a horrible person, but she Is dead-right on this. Of course, I hate that she’s supporting DeSantis, triple vaccines for of vaccines and the Grim Reaper for Covid deaths.

  19. Celina says:

Like rats from a stinking, racist, con-artist ship.

  20. jferber says:

Correction: I meant to say DeSantis is tripled vaxxed against COVID (as I suspect his whole family is), yet he is still playing the Grim Reaper for Covid, doing ALL in his power to kill off his state’s people, yet playing for the wider audience of the U.S. for his presidential campaign in 2024. Sickening, sickening, sickening. I’d like to see DeSantis get the Republican nomination and Trump become an Independent candidate so it will be one Democrat (Biden) against DeSantis and Trump. That will split the vote nicely between the crazies.

  21. Dillunn says:

Ann Coulter is despicable, but she called the election for Trump when everyone thought his run for the nomination was a joke. She’s got her finger on the pulse of a significant portion of the electorate. Unfortunately.

  22. Tarah says:

Agree with Anne here! The media made trump what he was bc they were absolutely bonkers over him and everything he said. I’m sure I’ll get hate- but that’s my opinion, she’s right
