A Justified spinoff with Timothy Olyphant is coming: awesome or too late?

Justified ran on FX from 2010 to 2015. Like a lot of show I’ve watched, I remember the characters more than the plots. Of course Timothy Olyphant was the standout as US Marshal and star Raylan Givens. That man was sex in a cowboy hat, and I went on to watch the hell out of him in Deadwood, which I missed when it first aired. That was also my introduction to Walton Goggins, who played Rayland’s nemesis Boyd Crowder. There were so many other phenomenal actors on that show including Margo Martindale, Sam Elliot and Neal McDonough. The good news is that Justified is coming back! Vulture reports that a limited series is coming that will follow Givens’ career as he moves to Miami and Detroit. It’s called Justified: City Primeval and will have the original show’s producers and showrunner.

Timothy Olyphant… is set to reprise his role as Raylan Givens, that smoldering gunslinger, in a miniseries spinoff of FX’s crime drama Justified, which ended in 2015. Justified: City Primeval reunites Olyphant with producers of the original acclaimed series, including creator Graham Yost. The new limited series is set to be based off Elmore Leonard’s novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, after the original series drew from Leonard’s novella Fire in the Hole and other stories featuring the character of Givens. City Primeval takes place after Givens’s work in Kentucky is finished, with the U.S. Marshal living in Miami, before he ends up in Detroit and involved with the case of someone known as the Oklahoma Wildman.

It’s unknown if other castmembers will return, but of course everyone wants Boyd to come back! I’m watching season one of The Righteous Gemstones on HBO now. I’m at episode five and don’t recommend it exactly because it’s a little maddening, but Walton Goggins is excellent as an evangelical preacher, as is John Goodman.

Justified wasn’t one of my favorites as it seemed to lose the thread a few seasons in. I feel the same way about this spinoff as I did about the Deadwood movie. I’ll watch it to see what the characters are doing and to be transported back to this world. Maybe I’ll read some Elmore Leonard stories in the meantime.

I can’t wait! Justified was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The characters in the writing we’re a step above.

Justified is my favorite show of all time because of the writing and the characters. I love the show so much that I have two 6 month old labrador puppies, a chocolate named Boyd and a silver named Raylan. I loved that they didn’t create a typical stupid southern bad guy in Boyd. He was so intelligent and I loved that he could quote the bible (and distort its meaning to justify his crime) and then quote poetry or a former president. And Raylan is my ultimate crush, I will watch anything with Timothy Olyphant in it.

      • emmlo says:

Agree so much! My husband wants to get kittens and name them Boyd and Raylan.

I just want a Sniper Tim cameo ep 🤠

Never to late for Timothy Olyphant or Justified! I will definitely watch, I just hope I don’t need to subscribe to a new streaming service to see it.

I loved Justified! I will miss Walton Goggins though.

I am going to need my Boyd Crowder and his particular wordiness.

  8. tamsin says:

A bit off topic- Does anyone remember the series Deadwood with Timothy Oliphant? I wonder if they ever mad the movie they kept talking about making after the series was discontinued.

  9. CL says:

I will watch the heck out of every episode!

  10. Scorpion says:

  13. Riverandtree says:

    Yay!! This made my day!

  14. Liesel says:

If the new show features Deputy Tim Gutterson and Deputy Rachel Brooks, then I’m in! I loved both of those characters and they were terribly underused.

  15. Laura says:

If you like Leonard’s work, check out Hap and Leonard series on Netflix. Starring James Purefoy rocking a southern American accent and the late great Michael Kenneth Williams.
One of the few shows/series I’ll rewatch.
They carried over Leonard’s excellent writing and the leads close relationship from the books , and managed to find 2 actors with amazing chemistry.

  16. Megan says:

Never a bad time for Timothy O to come back onscreen. Was annoyed when Netflix cancelled Santa Clarita Diet a few years ago.

    • Marietta2381 says:

Me TOO! I love Timothy doing comedy, his timing is impeccable! I’m very excited for Justified 🙂

      • Kilfanora says:

Sigh…..I just love me some Olyphant in anything….sigh. He could read the back of a cereal box for all I care, he just looks so beautiful and that voice…..sigh

  17. Bookie says:

My husband and I watched Justified as our first pandemic binge-watch. Loved it! I can’t wait for the sequel. I will watch paint dry if Timothy Olyphant is holding the brush.

  18. Elsa says:

I think Justified would work really well as an occasional limited anthology series!

  19. Kaye says:

I agree with you, CB; the show went off the rails toward the end and Raylan was no longer attractive to me. Boyd Crowder, however, continued to be the focal point whenever the camera was on him.

  20. Kebbie says:

This is fantastic news! I re-binge Justified all the way through every year or so, I love it.

  21. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Supreme awesome sauce. I was introduced to Goggins watching The Shield, omg, he’s fantastic. His appearance in Sons of Anarchy is epic. Justified was so engaging and Olyphant was made for that role, so yeah, I’m down for some more Timothy. After watching Justified, I too, discovered Deadwood because of his talent, and fell in love with that series as well lol.

    • Lucy2 says:

I think Goggins is one of the best actors working today. I had never seen him before justified, but went back and watched a lot of his older stuff, he was so incredible in the shield, especially towards the end of the series.
I do hope he pops up on this continuation, but either way I am thrilled to have more of this fantastic show, especially with the original show runner and writers.

  22. schmootc says:

Sign me up! I love me some Timothy O. And I don’t get Disney+, so have missed out on The Mandalorian.

  23. pocket litter says:

Awesome! Hope it’s coming soon! And yes to Hap & Leonard. Excellent show! Big Elmore fan.

  24. YAS says:

Did I think the show was groundbreaking? No. Do I lust after Timothy Olyphant to the point where I will watch him in literally anything? Yes. Count me in.

  25. LaUnicaAngelina says:

I’m am here for this. Tim Olyphant is so damn sexy…

  26. Kittycat says:

Love the show and actors. Timothy is one of those men who starts to look like a woman as he ages.
