Glee creator to NBC: “I look forward to seeing a Jay Leno float”

There was news yesterday that NBC decided to uninvite the cast of fan favorite Fox show “Glee” from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year. Apparently Macys officials invited the cast of Glee to perform, they were starting to get prepared for it, and then NBC pulled the plug before it could be made official. In a dig at the failing revival of Jay Leno’s talkshow, Glee creator Ryan Murphy said that he understood why they decided not to include his show in the parade, and quipped “I look forward to seeing a Jay Leno float.”

Glee creator Ryan Murphy says he gets why NBC asked Macy’s to pull the cast of his Fox show out of its Thanksgiving Day parade: “I completely understand NBC’s position, and look forward to seeing a Jay Leno float,” he told EW.com. Sources said yesterday that NBC asked parade organizers to rescind an offer for the cast of the musical comedy to appear in the annual holiday event, which the network broadcasts. While the parade has featured performers from rival networks’ properties in the past — such as American Idol singers or High School Musical actors — sources said featuring an entire cast would amount to too much promotion.

“Glee” airs on Wednesday nights at 9pm against NBC’s “Law and Order: Special Victim’s Unit.” I’m not that skilled at judging Nielsen ratings, but USA today and TVByTheNumbers have the ratings for last week for overall viewership and based on key demographic, and the only NBC shows in the top 25 are football broadcasts. Obviously their comedies and dramas are not scoring super high in the ratings, as great as “30 Rock” may be.

“Glee” is one of my favorite shows this season, and if you’re not watching it you should give it a try. If you’re in the US, you can view most of the past episodes for free on Hulu.com or on Fox.com. I recommend episode five, The Rhodes Not Taken, featuring a very skilled guest appearance by Kristen Chenoweth. Again, Glee airs Wednesday at 9pm and will leave you feeling much more uplifted than another formulaic episode of “Law and Order” – no offense to our Law and Order fans. (Kaiser) It looks like NBC just gave the competition much more publicity than they would have had from a float on the Thanksgiving Day Parade.

There’s also news of a live musical Glee tour that’s possibly in the works for next year.

The perfect response in so many ways!

NBC can now sit back and proudly watch the increase in viewership for Glee that they have created with their stupid decision.

I guess I am the only one who hates that show.

I love Glee and L&O:SVU. I just happen to watch L&O:SVU on Hulu.

My question to NBC is where is Chuck? You promised us it was coming back. And while not a huge ratings boost it has a strong cult following.

    Glee, squee!

  7. Bam Bam says:

I’m so-so on musicals, but glee is really pretty good and fun. Maybe Macys needed to rethink their co-sponsors?

I wasn’t going to watch Glee until I saw that Jane Lynch was in it. I’ll give anything a chance just to watch her, she’s hilarious. It’s a good show, I like it. I can do without some of the musical numbers but otherwise, I want to see what happens to the characters.

I heart Glee! It’s so over the top hilarious! It’s a great satire and has great music.

Glee and Jay Leno show are pretty low brow entertainment.
Try “Fringe” “Lost” “CSI (original)” “Nova NOW” “House” use couch potato time as an opportunity to use your schooling.
Mindless TV can become a brain sharpening tool.

  11. Layla says:

I HATE the show. I’m not into that whole High School Musical-type crap.

  12. GatsbyGal says:

So is Glee…a comedy? Because I saw a clip of it once and all the folks were dancing on stage, except for the guy in the wheelchair who was just sort of wheeling around, and I was like, “Are they fucking serious?” It was like watching an SNL skit or something.

  13. ashleigh says:

That’s too bad. I’d probably have watched the parade for the Glee float. That’s saying something since I haven’t watched the Thanksgiving Day Parade since elementary school.

@Layla. Glee is not High School Musical. It is a witty satire about high school with extremely talented performers. I think it also has some great messages about the alienation everyone feels in high school. Plus, Jane Lynch is always amazing, and Glee is absolutely no exception to that. It’s probably the most consistently funny show I’ve seen this season.

  14. Persistent Cat says:

@Gatsbygal, that’s what I thought at first and dismissed it but again, I had to check it out because of Jane Lynch.

And CSI (all of them) SUCKS!!!!!!
