Madonna’s backhanded compliment to Lady Gaga

fp_3707930_madonna_nyc_09301

Madonna’s on the cover of the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone, and in it she admits that she can relate to Lady Gaga and actually sees a lot of her early self in her. Reminiscing about the time before she was famous and had a lot of money, Madge notes that it’s nice to see the genuine talent Gaga had before she had the resources to get all dolled up for a show. Considering the nice things she has to say about Gaga, it makes sense that Madge was willing to share the stage with her on SNL a week ago.

Madonna says she sees a lot of herself in Lady Gaga.

The Queen of Pop insists she can relate to the Poker Face hitmaker — because, like Lady GaGa, she had no money at the start of her career.

“I see myself in Lady Gaga,” Madge tells Rolling Stone in a new interview. “When I saw her, she didn’t have a lot of money for her production. she’s got holes in her fishnets, and there’s mistakes everywhere. It was kind of a mess, but I can see that she has that IT Factor. It’s nice to see that at a raw stage.”

Of the little excerpts Rolling Stone has released, the one I like best is where Madonna admits there are plenty of her songs she doesn’t like. Because I totally agree with her. I’m not slamming on her, but I’d say when I hear at least a third of her song I think “This is utter crap.” There’s this “upbeat” radio station in my hometown of Seattle that I swear is the all “Holiday” station, and every time I heard that song I wanted to punch my windshield. Madge doesn’t seem to want to get physically violent over her bad music, but she’ll admit some of it blows.

But after all these years, she admits she still can’t sniff out a Number One. “I’ve never been a good judge of what things are going to be huge or not. The songs that I think are the most retarded songs I’ve written, like ‘Cherish’ and ‘Sorry,’ a pretty big hit off my last album, end up being the biggest hits,” she tells RS. ” ‘Into the Groove’ is another song I feel retarded singing, but everybody seems to like it.”

[From Rolling Stone]

Ignoring her very un-P.C. use of the word “retarded,” I’d agree with Madonna on all those songs. It really says something about her commitment to entertaining her audience that she still performs them. Think how many artists bitch and moan about having to sing the same songs over and over because the audience wants to hear them. Madonna isn’t doing that – she’s saying she doesn’t care for the songs, but they make other people happy so she does it. It’s not a big deal but it’s cool that she’ll still do her crowd pleasers – Lord knows she has enough material not to.

Madge also noted that she gets so many requests to work with other artists that she has to turn most people down. But she actually requested to work with Eminimen, and he turned her down. She chalked it up to “maybe he’s shy.” Or maybe he hates “Holiday” too.

  2. Madonna has no musical talent at all, anymore. I never liked he earlier pop stuff when she first began; but what she puts out lately is just so beyond a joke terrible sounding. The only song of hers I like is “Frozen” and the other one from that album… Ohm Shanti.

  4. Has Madge always been this pasty? Her legs look absolutely cadaver-like. They’re almost blue.

  5. There was a time when Gaga didn’t have enough money for her shenanigans? But how did she afford that stint doing coke and playing with her hair that she’s so proud of? I thought she said that was how she learned to be creative or some bull.

In any case, Maddonna > Gaga. She did it first, she did it better and she is still doing it years later. I doubt Stefanie will be the same, to be honest.

  6. go away MAD vadge!
    go away MAD vadge!:

Mad Vadge can’t let go of being #1. So, she critiques EVERY singer trying to stay relevant. I remember she trashed Whitney/Mariah as having “no point of view,” championed Britney over Cristina + then abandoned her, + complained that Gwen Stefani “copied” everything from her. I don’t care what she’s accomplished, she’s just a total bitch and a narcissist. Can’t stand her.

  7. I use “retarded” too. But I thought Madge was all about campaigning to end bigotry and all that crap. She’s a total hypocrite, though I’m not surprised.

  9. Yea,Ray of Light is the only M. album I can listen to anymore….
though, curiously,my son does like her immaculate collection cd…and he is normally quite discriminating w/his music. [seriously, for an 8 yr old,he's a bit sophisticated].
anyway,i actually saw her like a virgin tour back in 86/87….she put on a he*l of a show! Really works her butt off.

BUT,her music is lame, and yea,she never really gives props to others-only compares them to lesser versions of herself,it seems,in interviews.

I’m struck by her conceit and patronizing attitude-that seems worse now than before.
I’m like ‘whoa-does she really think that much of herself?’

That said, she did make quite a mark,AT THAT TIME…so when people say she isn’t relevant,it’s a bit false,b/c she will always be relevant in the sense that she made waves at a time when not everyone had multiple tattoos, piercings and making fun of the church was not common sport.

I think it’s hard for her to do much controversial anything, anymore…It’s hard for anyone to make an impact through that means [controversy],really. I mean,it’s all been done.

  10. I’ve always thought Madonna’s career was dependent on her looks, her ability to select very talented producers and songwriters to work with, her style, her eye. Gaga has much more musical talent but has far more limited appeal in the style/looks dept.

  11. Please, people… stop using the word “retarded” as a synonym for “ridiculous.” Or “silly.” Or “worthless,” “useless,” etc. Geez! Those with cognitive disabilities deserve more respect than that. I’m sure you never thought about it before (just like we all grew up saying, “How gay!” without realizing the import of that slam), but now that you know better, do better.

  12. She just continues to disappoint me. I used to be such a huge fan. Nothing worse than hearing the artist you used to love call her own music “retarded.” I always thought “Cherish” was a romantic, catchy pop song where her vocals sounds uncharacteristically sweet. “Sorry” wasn’t a bad track either. What a great way to alienate your fans by selling them something and then calling it retarded.

I would agree that she has written some pretty bad tunes though, call them retarded if you like. I just don’t think Cherish and Sorry were among them.

  13. I think she just like’s to hear herself talk and thinks the whole world is waiting with bated breath for her opinion on pop stars. I do love her early stuff because its SOOOO 80’s and fun!! I love “into the groove”! It makes me want to dance my socks off!

  14. Eminimen?

I actually can’t pronounce that, you know. I know it was a typo - but good on you. That’s a proper puzzle for me. Eminemineminem? Eminiminoo? Eh. :/

  15. I am so tired of Madonna. She always tries to make up for her lack of creativity by latching on to others. She does work hard, I will give her that, but she also uses others. When she latched on to Britney it seemed desperate, just as she is doing now with Gaga. She needs to “collaborate” with so many artists, because she doesn’t know what the heck to do on her own. Look at her recent history, it has all been based on artists and producers doing the work for her (Timbaland, Justing Timberlake, etc.)

What, should I say “special” or “mentally-challenged” instead?

hahah. me too Fire! This PC BS is getting on my nerves! I don’t believe in that crap. It stifles free speech. People should be allowed to say what they want and deal with the consequences. No need for a word police.

Soon, there won’t be any words left that are okay to be said.

  20. The only reason Madonna went on SNL with GaGa is for people to say:

Wow, Madonna looks better than GaGa and she’s twice her age.

    The only reason.

She is so see-through, that Madge with her spanx and body stocking a la Marlene Dietrich. Madge has not one original concept. She ripped off Cindi Lauper’s 80’s dress also. Wasn’t her own.

  26. I used to love Madonna–and yes, I think your right about her patronizing current pop-stars. She is an arrogant, self righteous witch. Who cannot stand to be aging and not on top anymore.
The girl from Brooklyn who now speaks with a British accent and thinks no one remembers who she USED to be. Please Vadge, no more pathetic same-sex kisses to get attention, girls have been doing that to get male attention for years! She’s NEVER been original-just slick about who she steals from. She works hard and has become an icon, but is miserable, phony and twisted.

  27. She’s trying to sound young using the word “retarded.” I don’t like it when my kids say it and I don’t think celebs should use it either. It’s disrespectful. Plus she’s got old lady looking legs too.
