Nicole Richie and Joel Madden debuted their beautiful new son Sparrow James Midnight Madden on the cover of People. Siblings often look the same as babies (duh statement of the day right there) but Sparrow and Harlow don’t look all that similar to me. Here’s Nicole’s People cover with Harlow a year and a half ago. She had bigger eyes (though she’s a little older in her People cover) than Sparrow. They’re both cute as a bug’s ear – and talking about babies is really the best time to use that phrase.
According to People, Nicole and Joel are incredibly happy, and Sparrow and Harlow are bonding wonderfully.
Six weeks after welcoming their first son, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden – along with their 21-month-old daughter Harlow – are showing off the latest addition to their family, Sparrow James Midnight Madden.
“I couldn’t be happier,” Richie tells PEOPLE. “The only thing you want is for your kids to be healthy and happy, and they are. I’m right where I belong.”
In an interview at their home in Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles, Richie, 28, and Madden, 30, her boyfriend and front man of the band Good Charlotte, say they are deprived of sleep, but grateful their daughter Harlow is now fawning over a baby brother.
“I’m glad I had a girl before I had a boy,” says Richie. “She just loves him so much.” Adds the children’s proud papa, “She’s very gentle with him.”
[From People]
As with all unusual celebrity baby names, there’s a wide range of opinions on Sparrow. I like his name, were it not for the “Midnight.” I think just one standout name is best, otherwise you end up with a Pilot Inspektor situation. There have been rumors floating around since Monday that Joel and Nicole either have secretly gotten married or are about to. According to Radar, they’ve taken out a marriage license, though they certainly haven’t made any announcement. And Nicole’s father Lionel Richie made a comment about welcoming Joel into the family. They certainly haven’t rushed to the altar, but it would be sweet if they did.

Sparrow looks identical to Joel Madden, he’s cute but not as cute as little Harlow. She just eats me up.
Still, what has Nicole Ritchie done that warrants a People Magazine cover? The simple life? Don’t get me wrong, I like her style and she’s cute. But she has accomplished nothing more than having 2 kids. Put my mom on the cover, she’s cute and she had 4.

I wish I thought babies were cute like everyone else does, but I prefer kittens and puppies.

That baby couldn’t look any more like his dad.
What a cute little fellow.

I don’t understand what people find interesting about her, other than her baby’s names. how is she relevent?

Harlow favors her Dad, not seeing any of her Mom. Hopefully that will change, NR’s quite attractive.
Sparrow is an interesting if not brave choice for a male. Sure it’s not Sue like the song but it seems a better choice for a girl considering the delicate nature of the bird.

omg baby! he’s so cute.

Like the others, I’d say they may not look similar, but he is certainly the spitting image of his daddy. Harlow has a lot of Nicole around the eyes, so they make for a cute little gang with their Mommy and Daddy mini-mes.

What makes Sparrow a cute name is where it’s from, the Simon and Garfunkel song.
“Who will love a little Sparrow? Will no one write her eulogy? “I will,” said the Earth, “For all I’ve created returns unto me, From dust were ye made and dust ye shall be.”

This little boy really does look just like his Dad. You can sometimes see glimpses of both parents, but now I think Harlow looks more like her Mom than I thought originally. No big deal, it’s just kinda interesting. Like Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale’s kids. I thought they looked like him, but now it seems to me that they look like whichever parent is holding them!

Nicole created a jewelry line called House of Harlow and designed a maternity line for a Pea in the Pod. From what I’ve read, both were doing well sales-wise.

Let’s hope this child doesn’t resemble Joel when it’s all said and done. He’s uglier than a mud fence.

Cute baby. She seems to enjoy being a mom.

I think Harlow looks a lot like Nicole did when she was little. Darker skin and curly hair. She’s adorable.

I really love the name Sparrow, but I would expect it more for a girl too. Oh well, it does work either way

That baby is very cute, but Harlow looks just like her mother and is not very pretty. Both parents are unattractive.

Nice, Jackie. Pick on Mom and Dad all you like, but do you have to crap on a baby?
She’s on the cover of People because people are interested in her for whatever reason. Besides what’s already mentioned, doesn’t she get any love for the Madden-Richie Foundation?
I think both kids are cute; always thought Harlow looked like Dad, but the older she gets, the more Nicole you see in her.

Firestarter, you and me both.

i agree with the person that said they like the name Sparrow, although i kind of also thought it sounds a little more feminine than masculine, and i also agree about the only having one stand out name too. For example, my daughter’s name is Rowan, which is actually a british male’s name, the female version is Rowena…which was not going to be anywhere near my child…but anyway, i thought Rowan is a beautiful name but i also realized it is the kind of name that could go either way -she could grow up loving it because it’s pretty and unique and different and strong- or -she could grow up hating it and just want to be a Madison or Isabella or Emma, like every other little girl these days… so we her middle name is Elizabeth, which we thought is a very nice and pretty classic name that she could choose to use or come up with nicknames for. even so, we call her Roe and Rosie all the time anyway just for fun, and she seems to love her name as does everyone else who knows her or even plays with her on the playground, everyone seems to agree that it fits her and i’m sure that little Sparrow will end up the same, although i really can’t picture a teenage boy named Sparrow out on the football field or even in a rock band…sounds more like he’ll be reading poetry, and Neitzche, and doing little science experiments in his room or something i don’t know… i just can’ quite picture a little boy running around with that name.

Umm, like it says in the song.. Will no one write HER eulogy. Hence, feminine.

The reason Sparrow looks like his dad is a survival device we evolved to have. If a father sees himself in his children he is more likely to take care of them till they can survive on their own. Wait till Sparrow (or any baby) is a little bit older to judge who he looks like. Harlow looked like Joel when she was younger, then she started to look like Nicole after a year or so.

I actually think that Nicoles maternity line is really cute. And so is her jewelry.

@ Caroline – I have an uncle whose name is Sebastian. He grew up with the nickname Spaz and he really is just fine. Nicknames don’t often do lasting mental damage, I think. People should calm down about other people’s children’s names.
