Lady Gaga pays for her father’s open heart surgery

The traditional gift for parents when a celebrity first makes it big is to buy them a new house. That’s sort of the proud, “Look what I did,” or “I’m paying you back for all the ways you sacrificed for me” present. Lady Gaga, who is not so traditional, went another way – she bought her dad a heart. Okay that may or may not be all she bought him – her phrasing is rather vague and confusing – but she definitely shelled out for his recent heart surgery. Which is certainly better than a house.

DADDY’s girl Lady GaGa has given her father the gift of life — she paid for him to have a new heart. The Poker Face singer took to her Twitter account over the weekend to reveal that her dad, Joseph, had undergone open-heart surgery.

And now in an interview with with 104.7 KISS FM in Phoenix, Arizona, GaGa says she covered the cost of the operation with the advance for her new album.

“It was pretty necessary… It was the biggest nightmare of my life,” she said. “My father is my whole world; I’m such a daddy’s girl… I said, ‘I haven’t bought anything yet with any of the money that I’ve made from my new album… so let me buy you a new heart, dad.’ And he said, ‘OK, fine.’

“I took care of my mom and my sister and I took care of me, and he’s gonna be out in a couple of days… Now I feel like I can get back to work… For a while I was feeling like I just wanted to give up. This really kinda put things in perspective… When this happened I really just kinda said, ‘I don’t wanna do anything for the next two weeks; I just wanna be with my dad and be a good daughter.’”

[From Showbiz Spy]

I guess she meant she hadn’t bought anything for her dad yet, since she said she took care of her mom and sister and herself. Unless she meant “took care” in a different sense. This might seem like an obligatory thing to pay for on Lady Gaga’s part, since it’s a life or death situation. But in July she claimed to have been broke. It seemed like she was exaggerating, but it definitely left the impression that she’s not flush with cash, for whatever reason.

Lady Gaga claims that her expensive clothing habit has driven her to the poor house. In fact, according to her, she’s gone bankrupt four times.

She said: “I’ve gone bankrupt about four times now. My manager wants to shoot me!

“Every dollar I earn goes on the show. Now we’re finally getting to a place where it’s not bankruptcy. Then again, with another tour coming up soon I’ll probably be homeless again.”

[From Hollyscoop]

The bankrupt four times thing might have been hyperbole, but it does happen. And she’s said several times that all her money goes back into her shows – and her wardrobe. It actually doesn’t sound frivolous to me. It’s like remodeling your house – it’s enjoyable and makes things look better, and ultimately increases the value of the home. Gaga probably puts a good deal of her money back into her wardrobe and her show because ultimately it increases her value as a performer and a celebrity.

Hopefully Mr. Gaga (that’s his name, right?) will make a full recovery and enjoy his new lease on life.

Here’s Lady Gaga the last time she was photographed out – leaving the “Gossip Girl” set on October 13th. Images thanks to INF Photo.

You can’t go bankrupt four times. You can only declare bankruptcy once every 10 years. And didn’t her father have health insurance? Something in the milk ain’t clean.

  2. Praise St. Angie! says:

well, that was nice of her.

    (now, back to being bitchy…)

but I still think she looks ridiculous most of the time.

  3. Mairead says:

I take it to mean that she had less than no money and couldn’t even get credit card type credit 4 times. It happens, especially if you’re living in an expensive city and you’re trying to maintain a certain lifestyle, which even if it’s not glamourous might be sitll out of your true means.

And she might not have been that fliush until recently, it does take a while for actual profit and royalties to come through – everything before that is to pay back the record company their advance and they add so much random stuff onto the artists account. It keeps them (the talent) pliant, dontcha know?

  4. QB says:

It does not matter if her father haves health insurance because they will find any excuse to not cover it.

“You had a pimple in 1975 , thats a pre existing condition sorry we can’t cover your surgery”

I don’t think she is broke but she is not swimming in cash either.

  5. Sheila says:

I really, really like her. She has such a lyrical, beautiful voice – I don’t really understand why she distracts from that with her clothes.

  6. coucou says:

WTF is up with her? It’s like she’s going out of her way to look insane. The only thing that looks good in this picture of her is her nose and jaw-line. She’s got the Britney Murphy lips that messed up whatever was left showing of her face, and those ridiculous goggle shades, eek. Can you imagine the minion she pays to tell her on her way out the door “Oh yeah girl, you da bomb, that sh!t is hot (now pay me, crazy…)” Nice she’s helping out the fam, though.

  7. princess pea says:

She better pay for her father’s surgery. Frankly, it would be news if she HADN’T.

  8. HEB says:

…did he have open heart surgery (i.e. a bypass) or an actual heart transplant?

  9. atticus says:

Mr. Gaga, that’s his name isn’t it? HAHAHAAH love it

  10. JayBird says:

Jules millions of people don’t have health insurance, and even if he does, that doesn’t mean the entire cost of the operation is covered.

  11. Firestarter says:

Princess Pea- You took the letters right off of my keyboard!

  12. pickelhaube says:

    princess pea-

Yeah really. It’s something you SHOULD do for your parents, I don’t think it’s something that should be considered awesome (even though in today’s world, being unselfish and caring for your loved ones is some big shocker to people). I am glad she did it though, I would do anything for my parents, even though I am not rich, because I love them, and I would be sickened and saddened by people who don’t, especially if they have the means to do so. But I like Lady Gaga, I just find her so interesting and different! Good for her…really.

  13. NIKKI says:

that was really nice of her; I mean anyone who can should do so for their loved ones as long as they are deserving (by that I mean didn’t lock you in a closet and tie your hands up so you had to talk to the birds for hours to comfort yourself) but she still looks like a twat.

  14. GatsbyGal says:

I guess I don’t understand how this is news…are people surprised that she did this or something? Any decent human being would do the same thing in her position.

  15. Eileen Yover says:

I wish she’d invest in some teeth that fit in her mouth. It drives me CRAZY the way her mouth is never closed.

  16. Persistent Cat says:

It kind of reminds me of the Onion article about the basketball player being a decent human being.

  17. Dani says:

Even if her Dad does have health insurance, he’d still have to pay what’s not covered which can be a pretty penny.

  18. shelby says:

    she looks absolutely ridiculous

  19. Sarah says:

It’s ridiculous how this should even be considered a headline, considering how almost any child would take care of their parents, in small ways, like when they are children, to adults, helping out in financial situations. Her parents were the one who brought her into this world, raised her, clothed her, and put a roof over her head. This news is hardly surprising.

  20. terri says:

To Jules Oct 17. you sound skeptical, even judgmental. do you have a law degree that you know what the law is in every state that you can back your comment up. also your missing the point in asking if her father had insurance. Her money probably gave him better care than any insurance policy would. Meaning her love for her dad meant everything to her that she would give her contracted money to have him live another day. Always someone who is so shallow and quick to judge. Insurance only covers so much a year. And for the rest of you idiots who are cutting her down, why waste your time being negative when there is so much life to live? You obviously don’t have a life and do love her or have no mind of your own and have peer pressure and week or you wouldn’t spend time to comment. Judge not or you will be judged. You only wish you had the money she has you damn idiots. She is doing something right or she wouldn’t still be making money.. duh!! grow up. Do YOU have entertainment contracts that are paying your rent? I didn’t think so. It’s because your to busy finding people to cut down instead of working on yourself and your own dreams. Just think of all the time it took all of you to judge her when you could be writing a song, or focusing on a dream. Of course the difference is between you and Lady Gaga is that she didn’t care what people thought and she made her dream a reality. What r you doing? oh yeah, spending time cutting people that will lead you to a road of disappointment of wasted time and bitterness. Good luck with your success, fucking idiots.

  21. terri says:

To Eileen Rover, now I have seen the most shallow person ever in my life, YOU. Look in the mirror, I AM SURE YOU can find something imperfect that bothers you and you’ve been made fun of. Confess how bad it was to be picked on all your life because you sound like your role playing. your pimples? your big ears? your crocked nose? the fat on your hips? the eye color and hair color that kept you out of all the hip groups in school. Love is what is expressed from the heart not what you wear on your bones, as flesh. Some day you will realize after all the men use you up from giving it up that you should of used your inner beauty that God gave you. Good luck to miss shallow.

  22. terri says:

Sarah, you are not who it is about. I’m sorry but it’s about Lady Gaga, so get over yourself. How do you envy someone so much that you actually thing the positive story is a waste of time? Do you watch the news just to hear children being killed everyday, and how our countries are at war? Is that what turns you on? YOu make me sick.

  23. terri says:

coucou, how old r u? do you not know anything about acting or singing? or marketing? no one was made to just please your dumb ass. it is what the WORLD wants, not you. her character and uniqueness is what is making her BIG. when you grow up and realize this then you can get your nose out of your butt, wipe the poop off and see the world in a better light because you won’t be in the dark looking up your own butt being stupid. Do you have everyone doing everything for you? Are you traveling all over the world? Who do you think pays for it? People who love her. Are you that dumb? So let her make her money and you go be happy somewhere else or stay stuck up your butt.

  24. terri says:

Nikki you started sounding nice but you ruined your personality when you said she was a twat. Make yourself clear, are you saying she is vulgar? I’m sure you lost your virginity at 12. YOu probably did what the bad girls did, only YOU weren’t smart enough to get paid HUGE bucks to be that twat as in an artistic way. Ha Ha you got used and she used her talent.

  25. terri says:

Shelby, God made her and planned her life way before she was thought of. So you are cutting down God’s creation. You sound ridiculous and rude yourself. I bet you could never sing the notes God gave her as a talent. God doesn’t make mistakes. You are no better than her. But it seems she is using what God has given her. It’s called acting and a voice to sing. Got it?!

  26. terri says:

Angiel.. your right you are a bitch and another person w/ no morals. Let me explain one more time to you idiots that your opinion “but I still think she looks ridiculous most of the time” is one persons opinion out of millions. Another shallow person you are. SHE IS AN ARTIST. Do you need the meaning of what an artist is? Do you have a dictionary? Nah your probably too stupid to know what a dictionary is because you are blinded my negativism.
BTW it will have the letters DICTIONARY ON THE FRONT OF IT. Did you graduate high school?

  27. Steve Burstein says:

Wasn’t her father already wealthy? Why did Gaga have to pay for the surgery? That reminds me, my mother is always insisting that most succsessful people(especially in show biz)are from money. How true is that? I keep wanting to tell her she’s wrong, but along comes another rich kid like Gaga to ruin my point!

  28. Jay says:

To Terri, This is my first time ever leaving a comment, but you inspired me to let you know how right you are about people and their judgemental attitudes. If you read this, I hope you keep it up. My quote is if you have nothing nice to say then don’t say nothing at all. Overall in my opinion Lady Gaga is doing a wonderful job, and she’s striving to be different, and that’s what I like about her the most. She does remind me of Madonna, because Madonna was critized for her styles and videos, and despite all that she is still labeled as one of the greatest artist of her time.

  29. Percephone says:

okay really just because you guys dont like lady gaga you dont have to say shes hiding something its not like anyones true at heart. so stop being so negative to miss gaga shes doing something with her life unlike you gaga haters!

  30. Sam Furfaro says:

I adore Lady Gaga! She’s the greatest!

  31. Hello just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your post seem to be running off the screen in Opera. I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The style and design look great though! Hope you get the issue fixed soon. Many thanks
