Someone PLEASE help me understand this! If Madonna is only going to match $100,000 dollars of a $15 million dollar project, where is the other $14 million, $900,000 supposed to come from? This is HER BRIBE to the Malawian government for those 2 adopted kids, why are we supposed to come up with the addition funds?

Dur, Pickel, yes it was, like, duh (joking). Look for your posts and eat them up and I was more than happy to defend you last week when someone called you ugly. I know a beauty when I see one and here, we have a beauty on our hands and beauts have a lot of wisdom because of their view of the world since, like 3 yrs. old. Remember, beautiful woman make the best friends because they have nothing to prove. Your next female friend, make sure she has more than you and you can embrace female friendship again. Avoid the not-so-pretty do nothings for they are all about competition to prove to you and themselves that they are better than you. Avoid those busted crazies!

I am sick of people in Hollywood, that make MILLIONS, asking American citizens to give their money to other countries. Celebrities are insanely RICH and if each one of them lived on the same social scale as the average American and gave the rest of their wealth to these countries, there would be no poverty in these 3rd world countries. But Hollywood wants us to give our money while they buy $2500 purses, live in multiple mansions, vacation to exclusive islands and drink $800 bottles of champagne! Are you kidding me???

I do volunteer work b/c I can’t afford to give money so I give my time.

I see where you are coming from, and yeah I am a bit jingoistic and probably overly patriotic, but that’s just (some) Americans for ya! I like the English, believe it or not, though, and being in the Middle East I can see how you might be a little more in tune with the global village idea. Out of curiosity, what country are you in?

And yes, that flaw in my reasoning is a good one, but honestly, if the US was in trouble tomorrow, I seriously doubt anyone would help us, because the world hates our guts (probably with good reason in some cases), despite the billions we send each year in foreign aid. So giving help doesn’t necessarily mean that we will get it when we need it…but if we gave help just to get it, that would be a pretty crappy, self-serving thing to do. So I don’t know what the right thing to do on a large scale is. However, for me personally, I like to see the fruits of my labor, and since I live in this country, I like to feel like I’m helping make it a better place. If I lived somewhere else, I’d probably help out there as well. Just because I like helping people. Maybe we should just put ourselves a little higher on the priority list, and continue to help other countries as well….? Maybe that’s reasonable?

Still hate Madonna though!

many african economists are starting to reject the idea of aid because it destroys local economy. example: if 5,000 mosquito nets are bought in america or taiwan and shipped to malawi, local mosquito net makers in malawi go out of business, helping to reinforce dependance and adding to the yoke of aid debt so many countries are racking up and cannot repay, thus helping keep them poor. microfinancing, not aid, is the key to helping developing nations get out of poverty & stay out of poverty. investing in the country’s economy is key – if aid worked it would have worked by now.

in other news: madge is still rocking the faux british accent.
