Margaret Qualley & FKA Twigs got into some kind of heated confrontation

In December 2020, FKA Twigs sued Shia LaBeouf for sexual battery, assault and emotional distress. Twigs spoke in-depth about how he love-bombed her, groomed her, then terrorized her and abused her for months. When Twigs sued Shia, he was dating Margaret Qualley. A few months later, Qualley and Shia were done. Qualley later reposted one of Twigs’ statements and Qualley spoke about how it was important to her to publicly show Twigs that she (Qualley) believed her. Well, Twigs’ lawsuit is still happening. Now Page Six says that Margaret Qualley and FKA Twigs ran into each other in LA and there was some kind of heated discussion which left both women shaken.

The fallout from Shia LaBeouf’s alleged abuse has, sadly, come between two women he has dated, Page Six has learned — and the bad blood led to a tense confrontation between them at the Bel Air hotel. Chic British singer FKA twigs is suing the “Transformers” actor for alleged sexual battery, assault and infliction of emotional distress during their relationship, which lasted from the summer of 2018 to the spring of 2019. (LaBeouf has admitted being abusive to those around him, but denied her specific claims).

When she first made the shocking allegations in an interview with Elle magazine in September 2021, actress Margaret Qualley — who also briefly dated LaBeouf in early 2021 — posted the cover on social media with the caption “Thank you.” She later told Harper’s Bazaar that she posted the cover because, “It was important to me for her to know that I believe her — and it’s as simple as that.”

We’re told that after the piece came out, Twigs and Qualley exchanged messages, and Twigs hoped that Qualley would agree to be a witness in the case, which is set to go to trial in April 2023. But it seems Twigs became disappointed that — despite her public show of support — Qualley didn’t appear willing to throw herself into the suit as actively as the singer had hoped.

We’re told the two women — who hadn’t known each other before the Elle piece was published — happened to run into each other at the luxury hotel in Los Angeles. Sources say it’s unclear who approached whom, but the pair got into an intense verbal dispute over the matter in full view of the other hotel guests, and that Qualley’s fiancé, Bleachers singer Jack Antonoff, came to her defense and joined in with the argument.

Insiders say that Twigs, whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett, and Qualley were both left “shaken” by the incident. Reps for Qualley declined to comment. Reps for Antonoff and Twigs didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment.

[From Page Six]

I’m not going to make any assumptions here about what was said between the two women. Twigs has every right to seek some kind of justice. Qualley has every right to stay out of it, if that’s really her position. We don’t know the extent of what Shia did to Qualley, if he did anything at all. We do know what he did to Twigs because she’s told us and I believe her. I’m not saying this as some kind of vague placeholder sentiment: I hope both women find some way to heal.

In college I had a replacement roommate from China (my roommate got pregnant and left school). The new woman was seemingly married to a Chinese man in a different state. He ultimately dumped her but I never knew if they were legally wed.. She asked me to testify that they were. I had met him once. I declined not because I didn’t believe her but because I truly didn’t know enough. I fully belief Shia is abusive and was to FKA but I also fully think he couldn’t have been perfectly normal to Margaret and because she didn’t witness anything she chooses not to be a witness. It’s unfortunate and hopefully there is some justice.

    • MC2 says:

She could answer any questions truthfully, rather than decide what she would or would not bring to the case. Just like you could have decided to testify & say you met the man once, but couldn’t personally prove they were wed….which might be all your roommate was asking for. Who knows but justifying not testifying for a fellow about what you do know or did witness, because you think you know the outcome, is not being a good citizen to each other. Let’s do better.

      • lucy2 says:

Neither side’s attorney would want a witness like that though. It’s not about thinking one knows the outcome, but whether one has testimony that would impact the case.

  2. ThatsNotOkay says:

FKA twigs probably thinks what Quailey did was performative—like a BLM hashtag while still blindly doling out microaggressions, or a METOO hashtag while still being a Pick-Me Girl. Margaret doesn’t have to get involved in the lawsuit if it makes her uncomfortable and she needs to put Shia behind her, but her show of support and then lack of support wouldn’t sit well with me either. She should have stayed out of it entirely then.

    • Selene says:

If she had said nothing people would’ve crucified her. She broke up with the man and publicly sided with FKA, and she shouldn’t overstep. Qualley did everything right, but apparently it’s still not enough.

    • C says:

I think a public show of support is still a big deal given that it’s not like these women were friends before or even after, to be honest.
She validated Twigs’ experience, but that doesn’t mean she has to get further involved especially since we don’t know what her reasons are.

I think both women are justified in their feelings, if this story is the truth.

    • Wendy says:

There is no evidence of ‘lack of support’ though. There are a hundred reasons why she isn’t involved in the actual legal proceedings and we know none of her motivations.

    • Poppies says:

      This!

  3. girl_ninja says:

I hope that Twigs gets the justice that she deserves. From dating Robert and having to endure abuse from his delusional and racist fans to Shia, it’s been a lot for her.

    • Ramona says:

+1 FKA endured a lot of abuse from those twilight fans like Zawe Ashton (with Tom Hiddleston fans) or Meghan Markle and Rob never lifted a finger. That’s why I always will have respect for Harry.

      • girl_ninja says:

I really do love Harry that. I still remember when that “Love Shield” statement was sent out by Harry calling out the racist media. Robert should have done something similar.

    • Qita says:

The allegations aren’t “shocking” sadly. Men are doing this crap left right and centre worldwide. The shocking part is that we don’t take them seriously, and society isn’t trying to take this more seriously. In Canada sentences for violence are only getting shorter. On the bright side, I love that at least film makers tackle male depravity. Promising young women is a monumental film and I just saw the new movie “darlings” on Netflix and enjoyed every second of it. (Meant to reply to the article not these comments.)

    • Otaku fairy says:

      Agreed.

  4. Case says:

I think Qualley can genuinely believe Twigs and also not want to get involved in a lawsuit. What if her relationship experience was completely different? She might not have anything of value to add to Twigs’ case. Alternately, if she did experience abuse she might not want to relive it.

    • lucy2 says:

That’s my thinking too. Twigs may assume Qualley had a similar experience and wants her to back her up in court, but Qualley’s may not have, and can’t help her the way Twigs hopes.
It’s a shame they were both upset by this conversation, I wish both of them the best, and Twigs all the good luck in the world to win her lawsuit against her abuser.

      • CourtneyB says:

If she didn’t corroborate significantly she could actually hurt FKA’s lawsuit.

      • lucy2 says:

Exactly, CourtneyB. She didn’t witness FKA being abused, and if she can’t testify to a similar experience of her own, they shouldn’t bring her in.
I totally get FKA wanting her to, and being frustrated if she doesn’t feel supported, but this is something that should be left to her attorney.

    • Malificent says:

Qualley only dated Shia for a few months, and she was already aware of Twigs’s law suit. I’m gonna guess that Qualley saw the beginnings of what Twigs had experienced — probably the initial love bombing — and got out before he escalated. So, Qualley may believe and support Twigs, but she may not be able to testify to a personal experience of abuse with him.

    • schmootc says:

It’s fair on Twigs to want/hope Qualley would back her up and for Qualley to also nope out. I mean, this situation sucks for both of them, but I think any fault should go to Shia. He’s the jackhole who created it.

  5. Sasha says:

Hard to comment without knowing enough details.. but it’s perfectly possible for Shia and Margaret’s dynamic to have been very different. Abusive men aren’t necessarily consistently abusive to all women – look at the women in Depp’s history! I don’t think it’s hypocritical for Margaret to voice her support but decline to be involved as a witness. But I also feel sad for Twig’s situation. Must be disappointing.

  6. Well Wisher says:

Well said. It is about healing and hopefully justice.

  7. Amy Bee says:

This story sounds made up but if it’s true, I’m going to bet only one person was allegedly shaken by the confrontation and it wasn’t Twigs.

    • Ramona says:

It’s Page 6 so totally made up and reeks of misogyny like always with them. Their stories are misogynistic, racist and prejudice, just the worst. It’s owned by Murdoch so same level than the Sun or Daily mail

  8. Isabella says:

This makes the angry black woman argument. Sounds like they were both shouting.

“Qualley’s fiancé, Bleachers singer Jack Antonoff, came to her defense and joined in with the argument.”

  9. Zoochy says:

What a sad and upsetting story. I hope they can eventually make amends and put this awful incident behind them.

  10. Sakura says:

Shia LaBeouf….part-time actor, full-time douchebag. I hope these women can settle their differences and put this all behind them. Shia just ain’t worth any of this nonsense.

  11. AmelieOriginal says:

I understand FKA Twigs might see Qualley’s refusal to be a witness in the lawsuit as lack of support after her public support for Twigs on social media but that’s really tricky. We don’t know what Qualley’s relationship with Shia was like, it’s possible he wasn’t abusive at all or that Qualley doesn’t want to relive her experience with Shia with the lawsuit and wants to move on which is her right.

There’s also another layer of privilege to this given Qualley is a white woman who grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth with Andie Macdowell as her mom and Twigs is a black woman who worked hard from nothing. If the situation were reversed, what would people think about Twigs refusing to be a witness for Qualley? In any case, it’s a not great situation all around and I hope both women can find healing.

  12. tuille says:

Twigs initiated her suit based on her experience. MQ supported at least 1 of Twig’s claims. That is not grounds to expect MQ to appear as a supporting witness in a court case. The proper approach is to politely ask if another person is willing to testify based on that person’s experience & graciously accept the response, yes or no. Trying to bully or guilt someone else to add evidence in court to another individual’s suit is not appropriate. Twigs should stick to her own evidence & claims.

  13. Vanessa says:

This Reeks of the angry black woman narrative twigs is a victim of domestic abuse she endured years of racist abuse because she date rob pattinson . She was left to sink to deal with abuse by a bunch of racist Karen’s and now she being accused of being a bully to Margaret with no evidence that Twig even asked Margaret to be a witness. It clearly someone wants to painted twig in the oldest racist trick in the book . I’m surprised that twigs wasn’t accused of making Margaret cry since that go to line for white woman . I’m surprised and taking back by how so quickly woman on here are so quick to assume that twig is in the wrong and she the aggressive while Margaret is a victim and doesn’t have to Do anything to help twig why offer empty words and empty support it’s seem to me that Margaret and her people saw people questioning why she hasn’t spoken up and why she was still involved with Shia . So she and her pr people decided to show some support to twigs to stop people for calling her out it was all performance and now that Margaret career and image is decent she withdrew anything support Twigs . While getting her people to leak this story to make twigs look like a angry black woman and people are buying it .

    • AnneL says:

To be fair, most people seem to be understanding both sides of the issue. A few have suggested Twigs was more confrontational and Margaret more upset, but it’s not even close to the majority.

    • D says:

I am also very surprised by the reaction from a good number of commenters. Lots of people trying to lay blame on Twigs even though we have no idea what went down (if it even went down at all). The original report is both misogynistic and pushing the angry black woman trope. I’m disappointed more people aren’t seeing that and are jumping to defend some woman who really doesn’t need defending.

    • SAS says:

Yeah, I’m really disappointed at the direction of the comments here which seem to accept Twigs pressuring Margaret about the lawsuit as the grain of truth to start from.

These people are clearly not familiar with anything to do with Twigs. She’s smart as hell, so why would she push someone unsuitable to be a witness in her lawsuit? She’s a hugely empathetic victim of abuse, why would she pressure someone clearly uncomfortable to be part of her lawsuit? None of this makes sense.

If we’re throwing out random theories today (and accepting that this even happened at all), I’m gonna say white-bread Margaret and Jack were knowingly or unknowingly insulting or rude towards her.

    • MarcelMarcel says:

This 100%! This is an unverified report from a paper owned by Murdoch. so why take it at face value and extrapolate that FKA Twigs wants Qualley to be a witness?

It’s definitely pushing the angry black womxn narrative. And it’s using the fragile white womxn trope to discredit FKA Twigs. The way this story is framed in the original article is peak misogynoir.

I think we need to really analyse reports like these and who is benefiting from how the narrative is framed. Especially of the backlash against MeToo and the very obvious hate campaign against survivors like Evan Rachel Woods.
I do agree with Kaiser re: wishing healing & justice for FKA Twigs & Qualley.

  14. DrFt says:

Angry mixed woman vs fragile innocent white woman part 24616656788.

  15. Pointillist says:

Not saying Margaret needs to continue to speak but maybe Black women are sick of being at the forefront of speaking up and sticking up for other women and not getting much in return. Also Antonoff can go to hell.

  16. Queen Meghan’s Hand says:

I hope FKA is getting mental health support as she moves forward with the lawsuit. I hope FKA has support as she realizes she is truly alone in this lawsuit and that the American court system is purposely designed to re-traumatize and re-abuse survivors of sexual abuse.

I hope FKA has support as she realizes that because she is open about her experience with Shia, that does not mean she is entitled to demand that openness from his former lovers—especially because of the American court system. I hope she realizes that Qualley’s choice is likely not a vindictive one against her, but likely the best one to maintain her health and safety.

I recommend reading Sarah Polley’s book Run Towards The Danger. She writes a painful essay about the “cancelling” of Jian Ghomeshi and the abysmal treatment of his victims by the courts.

  17. Pointillist says:

Apparently this incident happened in April and Antonoff and Qualley pursued FKA Twigs and she didn’t want to speak to them. This came from a blind item on Deux Moi – same hotel. Margaret also stayed with Lebeouf when Twigs’s article came out, broke up with him and she posted that support. Let’s stop believing in the ultimate innocence of white people – Antonoff getting involved against a Black mixed woman is especially heinous.

  18. so says:

Just came here to say : please stop using the term “grooming” incorrectly.
Grooming occurs between an adult and a child / underage person. Laboeuf is only 2 years older than Twigs, they were both in their 30s. It was abuse, but not every abuse is grooming.

  19. littlegossipgirl says:

I think Margaret wanted to point out that yes she believes Twigs and supports her but she probably had a totally different experience because they were only together for a short time. I think it would be wrong for Margaret to support her case when she doesn’t have anything of substance to contribute. That could end up hurting the case more. She can support Twigs and not be involved.
