Trevor Noah is finally stepping down as host of ‘The Daily Show’ after seven years

I thought we would be discussing Trevor Noah’s new relationship with Dua Lipa, because the photos of the two of them came out in the early evening on Thursday. Then last night, The Daily Show aired and Noah made a huge announcement, one which blows the Dua Lipa news out of the water. After seven years and a massively shrinking audience, Trevor Noah is stepping down as host of The Daily Show:

Trevor Noah is nearing his last laugh on “The Daily Show.” The comedian, who came out of near anonymity to take over the program from Jon Stewart in 2015, plans to exit the flagship Comedy Central series after a seven-year tenure that saw him transform it for a new generation of viewers who are more at home on social media than they are cable outlets and broadcast networks.

Noah revealed his plans to an audience at Thursday evening’s taping of the program in New York, according to two people familiar with the matter. It was not immediately clear when his actual exit would take place, or whether the Paramount Global cable network had begun to consider a successor. Jill Fritzo, a representative for Noah, could not be reached for immediate comment.

[From Variety]

I’ll just say what’s on my mind, okay? Trevor Noah was the wrong person to take over from Jon Stewart, and Noah stayed on way too long. It was clear that the audience wasn’t buying Noah’s (Bernie Bro) shtick years ago – TDS’s audience and cultural relevance fell off a cliff during Noah’s years as host. His tenure should have been, at best, a two-year transitional gig. I’ll never really forgive TDS producers for not looking harder for a woman to replace Stewart, especially given that Samantha Bee was RIGHT THERE. Bee left TDS the same year as Stewart, 2015. I’ve always wondered if she left when it was made clear to her that she wasn’t getting promoted to the anchor desk.

As for Dua Lipa, I guess Dua and Trevor are dating now. The Daily Mail had exclusive photos of Dua and Trevor out and about this week in New York. I’m also including photos of Dua out last night, going to a Clooney Foundation event. Her dress has giant buttons, y’all know the Princess of Wales is in ruins right now.

I feel like Dulce Sloan, especially after the big boost she got at Comic Con, is being primed to take over

    • Latte says:

You assessment is soo wrong… out of all the late night shows Trevor s audience actually grew and it grew even more for ppl between 18 ~45 unlike other late night. Sure he is not your typical late night but that’s exactly why he appeals to a wider n younger demographic. I didn’t even know about the show till he came. A real loss especially in late with the same point of view, he gave a diverse global view sad but happy he is going to bigger n better

      • Carrie says:

Agree. I think he is brilliant, thoughtful and insightful in his commentary. It has been great to have someone who is not male and white.

      • Fabiola says:

I watched this show since the beginning but once Noah took over I tuned out. He is not funny at all. The show became very boring and I could see why a lot of regular viewers tuned out. He is not right for the show. They could have promoted one the regular cast members that were already a fit with the show.

      • Yvette says:

@Latte and @Carrie … Agreed! Trevor Noah is funny as shite and he does the best impersonations ever. His Trump is ‘Diamond’ quality good! Will really miss this brilliant young man. Best wishes, Trevor! 🙂

    • Heidi says:

I would not mind this. I really enjoyed Trevor Noah’s run but Dulce Sloan would be an awesome replacement. Assuming the show will continue at all given the format in general is becoming a bit of a relic.

    • HamsterJam says:

I LOVED Trevor Noah, but YES to Dulcie Sloan and/or Jessica Willams

      • VoominVava says:

I am adding to the LOVE Trevor Noah list. He kept me sane and alive during the pandemic. He was one of the only shows to continuously be on the air every day, FROM HIS NY APARTMENT! I bet that wore him out! I will forever be thankful for that. He is so talented with his impressions and his whole story is inspiring, imo. Plus he’s cute, intelligent and seems like his heart is in the right place. He always would spotlight people who wouldn’t normally be guests on late night TV.
I didn’t watch during the Jon Stewart times, and started watching when Trevor started and loved it so much. High quality television. I look forward to seeing what he does next!
I would love to see a woman replace him though!

      • goofpuff says:

I loved Trevor Noah also 🙂

    • HeyJude says:

I wish they’d give it to Samantha Bee, she’s the one who carried on in the fashion most similarly set up by Stewart. She put out some bangers in the Trump era on her TBS show. They probably don’t think she’s “young enough” anymore at the network though which is ick.

  2. ThatsNotOkay says:

I think Noah is hilarious and his segments where he just talks to the audience are some of the realest and most important commentary we hear from anyone today. He distills truths to their cores better than anyone, with added touches of humor. I see this as a loss. Comedy Central itself is losing viewers—it’s not just TDS.

And that Dua Lipa kiss looks friendly and not at all romantic, for what it’s worth.

    • Lucy says:

I agree. I really liked him as host, and as a person, but those audience bits are truly wonderful.

    • Keekey says:

Guess this is a YMMV. I liked Trevor Noah’s hosting even better then Jon Stewart’s. His memoir “Born a Crime” is excellent.

    • VoominVava says:

Ditto! He is a very intelligent man, and speaking from the heart like he did was amazing. He made it feel like a conversation and we were all part of it. I think a lot of people watch clips online now. Trevor appeals to a younger crowd than Jon Stewart, I’d imagine, and they just don’t sit down and watch TV every day at a set time like other generations did. That will affect TV ratings. I am not young by any means (48), and I don’t sit down and watch TV at set times either LOL. I’m sure it’s hard to get a feel for actual TV ratings nowadays with all the streaming and sharing, etc.
His memoir is excellent, for sure. What a story. I just adore him and love what he has done with his life.

      • Kira says:

The American media ratings is an outdated way of measuring viewership. Daily Show has millions of views on their YT channel and TikTok. Sick of these old white media men telling us what we watch? Loved TN honest and real commentary. Not the funniest bean in the bucket. I do think he hasn’t fully understood some topics such as feminism, LGBQT, gender etc but he does try and that’s fair enough.

  3. Amy Bee says:

Trevor Noah’s a Bernie bro? That’s news to me. He had some good moments particularly when talking about race. But the Daily Show was never the radical show that people think it was even under Jon Stewart.

    • Eurydice says:

Yeah, I don’t get the Bernie-bro, either. If anything, with his SA point of view,Trevor has always seemed a bit bemused by and detached from American political passions. I’ve liked him a lot and I hope this transition makes him happy.

    • Genevieve says:

Yeah, I loved TDS a long time under Jon Stewart, and watched for a bit with Trevor Noah. But I definitely had illusions when I watched it back in the day.

And I also think that once 2016 happened, even though the new president deserved a lot of derision, there really really just didn’t feel like much to laugh about. I think I lost faith in satire to have the corrective function, even at its best. And I definitely had realized by that point that TDS wasn’t the best satire anyway.

      • Dillesca says:

I never got a Bernie Bro vibe. I did feel like Trevor was an equal-opportunity offender, though, which you NEED in a comedian.

I think Genevieve hit the nail on the head— politics, culture, and what we want from comedy have changed over the past several years. It’s hard for a lot of these long-standing comedy institutions to survive the current landscape.

I’d have loved to have seen Sam Bee host, but Trevor did a good job and Sam Bee’s show was good for a while too, and it allowed her to have a schedule that worked better for her.

People just need to realise that not every program is FOR you— Trevor broadened the audience and likely lost some of the audience Jon Stewart had. And that’s fine.

  4. M says:

I like Trevor, but he’s never compelled me to watch TDS the way Jon did. In other news, those ‘buttons’ on Dua’s dress look like cabinet knobs lol

  5. Snuffles says:

I liked Trevor Noah on the show. At the same time, if he feels like his time there has run it’s course, I respect that. I look forward to new blood.

  6. Noki says:

Duas dress is giving me Liz Hurley vibes.

    • VoominVava says:

Definitely! I didn’t realize how gorgeous Dua Lipa is. I have never really followed her much. What a pretty couple they make.

  7. smegmoria says:

I honestly think Trevor and Seth Meyers have the best Trump impersonations. And I could just get lost in Trevor’s dimples.

  8. girl_ninja says:

I have appreciated some of Noah’s insight on certain matters but to me, there is more douche than not. Good luck to him I guess. Bye Bernie Bro.

  9. Lala11_7 says:

I RARELY watched him…but when I did.. it is a TESTAMENT to my growth that I didn’t have a daily show on Twitter….dragging him for filth…so there’s that.

  10. Jess says:

I agree Samantha Bee should have taken over but, that aside, I was sad to see this news. I thought Trevor was really good and he spoke to the younger generation – my son loves him. And, quite frankly, while I used to love Jon Stewart I’m sort of over him now. He was never the right guy to talk about race and he’s one of those white liberal guys who still centers himself – it’s still white guys who get to decide what does and doesn’t matter.

    • Concern Fae says:

I really liked her show, but unless she could have remade the Daily Show to suit her that well, I don’t think it would have worked. She is much better moving around than sitting behind a desk being the straight man (in comedy terms) to everyone else).

Also, John Oliver has talked about how doing a weekly show is much, much better for your life than trying to get a program up every night. I wasn’t really following the transition closely, was she campaigning for the gig?

    • Jennifer says:

They weren’t going to give the show to a woman, is what I’ve read.

I hope Sam Bee ends up somewhere good someday and doesn’t disappear for years a la MIchelle Wolf (still miss her too). At least Amber Ruffin still has her day job if/when they cancel her show officially.

    • VoominVava says:

@Jess: regarding your son, that makes me happy! I think Trevor is a fantastic role model / celebrity opinion-giver for the young generation. He is never mean spirited, he’s funny, talented, intelligent, open minded, considerate, and he gives people a chance to speak. Almost every other interviewer out there is talking over their guests. It’s awful to watch when they do that! He is just so smart and progressive, his qualities are similar to Meghan Markle’s imo. They are very similar to me that way and if they are what the youth are looking up to, it gives me hope and optimism for the future.

  11. Common sense says:

Trevor was the daily show for me. I don’t think I will watch once he leaves, maybe if Roy takes over. I was waiting for him to interview Rege, that was going to be epic; 2 men of Southern African descent on the world stage.

  12. Mina_Esq says:

Trevor has the best impersonations. I appreciate that his viewpoint is neither Dem nor Republican, and I don’t see the Bernie Bro comparison at all. He is what people from outside of US see when they look at American politics. He is huge overseas. I absolutely believe that this was his decision. I don’t think he has been happy.

  13. Juxtapoze says:

I love Trevor Noah & think he’s fantastic on TDS. I don’t have cable or satellite tv anymore so I don’t get to watch often.

    • Susan says:

I feel like Comedy Central is on a rapid decline. We used to watch that channel so much (RIP Tosh.0!) and honestly, whether it was his choice or not, he’s lucky to be jumping off this sinking ship. He’s talented and popular, he will move onward and upward (if he isn’t already).

  14. HeyKay says:

I stopped watching when Jon Stewart left.
I think the show peaked w/Jon and it’s time to shut it down.

Letterman should have stopped years earlier too. He ran out of steam a good 5 years before he left The Late Show.

Comedy is tough, and a nightly show needs lots of constant new material.

  15. TIFFANY says:

Naw, people saw him for what he was the second he invited Tonka Lemons on the show and gave her legitimacy. How many other guest did he personally give cupcakes to and them have dinner with.

He always gave an air of thinking we Americans are too dumb for our own good and I’m glad that he tanked in his run.

    • Little Red says:

I realize that American exceptionalism precludes the thought that we are too dumb for our own good but perhaps the rest of the world does see us that way.

  16. Boxy Lady says:

I’m going to miss him too. I think he brought a unique perspective because of where and how he was raised. His views on dictatorship and fascism were welcome during the Cheeto Era (still are welcome, to me).

    • molly says:

I thought his best stuff was the thoughtful, heartfelt things he said around racism or inequality. (Often during the commercial breaks or after the show.) A global perspective not often heard in American media. Unfortunately, that’s not what the show was supposed to be about, so no, not a good fit at all.

      • Boxy Lady says:

@Molly I typically get news from different channels and countries because every source and certainly every country has its own version of “gatekeeping.” Trevor’s global perspective definitely fit *me* and I think it educated a lot of viewers even if the show is solely meant for entertainment.

  17. lucy2 says:

I think I stopped watching regularly around the time Jon left, but the bits I’ve seen of Trevor have been fine, and I liked a few of his stand up specials. It feels like he just started though, has it really been 7 years?
I agree it should have been Sam Bee’s show, but I was glad she went out and got her own, and that ran for quite some time too. She’s great, I look forward to whatever she does next.

  18. BEAUTITUDE says:

It was saying the audience fell from 1.5M to 350K. I like Trevor Noah and his his comment about going back to do more standup and live performances sounds like a good fit. I didn’t love Samantha Bee’s show, but if she would be interested I still think she’s be good for the Daily Show.

  19. Wilma says:

I really enjoyed Trevor Noah as a host. There’s a lot of talent at the Daily Show at the moment, so I’m hoping one of the reporters gets to have a go. Love Dulcie Sloan and Ronny Chieng. Would also love to see Jessica Williams back.

  20. Plums says:

I stopped watching around when Jon left, but tbh Jon’s false equivalency shtick was growing stale around the time he left anyway. Last Week Tonight really became the spiritual successor to Jon Stewart’s daily show in its prime.

I don’t really blame Trevor Noah for falling viewership numbers though. The hour block of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report used to be nightly appointment programming for me, but honestly I moved on from appointment programming to watching clips or segments on twitter or youtube if they go viral years ago. And watching satire or any sort of funny political commentary during the Trump years didn’t feel satisfying the way it did before him. The political reality was so much worse than anything a satirist could imagine that it couldn’t be funny, just depressing. So not surprising if viewership cratered during that time.

    • Eurydice says:

Yes, I watch on youtube at the times that suit me. Also, the whole world has moved to opinion, and more so with the Trump years, so it’s pretty much political opinion 24/7 – on social media, in the news providers, in late night shows, in comedy overall. It’s like there are a billion competitors for what Jon Stewart used to do and they’ve all got opinions on the same handful of stories. Are we going to watch this person’s jokes about the administration, or the other person, or get into a twitter battle or fight on facebook – it’s exhausting, not entertainment.

  21. Amie says:

Oh I don’t agree with this take at all! I don’t watch late night anymore and solely watch clips on Youtube. Before Youtube clips and streaming I used to watch The Daily Show/Colbert Report religiously in college. And I really couldn’t imagine anyone ever doing the show apart from Jon Stewart. I did watch Trevor Noah a bit when I still lived with roommates who had a TV and while the beginning was always going to be awkward, I thought he did really well at making the show his own. When I no longer had a TV, I could no longer watch regularly and fell out of the habit. I like him and his memoir Born a Crime blew me away. Say what you want about him, you can’t deny that his origin story is pretty fascinating and he is a survivor of domestic violence (I still can’t believe his mom survived being shot twice, including in the head). I’ll miss him as host even though I haven’t watched regularly in years but I’m sure he’ll go on to do great things.

  22. lucky says:

I loved Trevor. I think he is hilarious and awesome at being a host. I think any transition is hard between hosts and if you are a die-hard x fan, then when y takes over there will inevitably be certain people lost in the transition, but that doesn’t mean it was a bad transition!

  23. Zoochy says:

It’s a shame to see Trevor go. The show felt like it was really hitting its stride lately.

Also I think it was ultimately the right call for him to take over from Jon Stewart and letting the Stewart-era crew go do their own things. John Oliver would never have been able to achieve what he has with Last Week Tonight. Full Frontal was pretty good but inconsistent. Larry Wilmore’s show was promising but execution was meh. Man I don’t know.

Seth Meyers and Colbert are still my faves.

  24. phlyfiremama says:

Trevor was fine as the host. Jon Stewart had an entire incredible team making his show better: Sam Bee, John Oliver, Stephen Colbert, et al. Trevor wasn’t afforded that same privilege, and personally I think he did a FANTASTIC job. Who knows how it would be if he
had been afforded the same caliber of talent Jon Stewart had to work with, that era was truly when the daily show was at its peak. It was the gestalt of personalities. I hope Trevor is under consideration as James Bond.

  25. Mika says:

I love Trevor and am excited to see what he does next.

  26. ME says:

Trevor Noah is hilarious and a massing talent ! I don’t know why he’s leaving the show. He had huge ratings during the early part of the pandemic when he was filming from home. I hope he goes on to bigger and better things. I love his sense of humor.

  27. tealily says:

I stopped watching, although I was never a super regular watcher. To me, the political climate is what killed the show, though, not necessarily Noah specifically. I don’t really care for him, but more than that, I don’t want to joke about politics anymore. It’s really far from funny right now.

  28. RoyalBlue says:

I love Trevor, and his clips on Twitter always go viral. I can’t say that about any other late-night host.

  29. FlachamBoden says:

I really loved Trevor and I loved his interactions with the audience. As a Nigerian I really enjoyed that he invited multiple African artists as well and I loved that he covered African topics too. I will miss him on TDS

  30. tamsin says:

It seems since covid the show is regularly re-empted or bumped. I liked Trevor Noah, and I agree that Noah didn’t have the same depth of talent surrounding him although he had great people as well. I though Noah as a replacement was brilliant because he brought an entirely different perspective. I find the whole format a bit “old” now, although I haven’t stopped to think about it too much. I think Trevor Noah is a great talent and it will be great to see what he does next.

  31. AppleCart says:

I watched religiously the first few years. But fell off during the pandemic. Trevor has said he gave up millions in touring money to do the TDS on a regular basis. I loved when he just riffed on things. But his interview skills were abysmal at best.

And since this seems to be the longest relationship that has lasted for him. A job, even for him it is time to move on.

    • LILY says:

I actually like him as an interviewer. Lots of times hosts seem to not care about their guests or ask pretty vapid questions. I like that he has conversations with them, especially when talking about their books. Its probably not the right format for that type of thing, but it is different.

      • VoominVava says:

I agree, I thought he was a great interviewer. It wasn’t about him it was about the guest, and he did his research. It was like being a fly on the wall during a normal conversation. Refreshing!
I am so glad to see so many comments praising Trevor.

  32. AnneL says:

Trevor had a tough assignment stepping into Jon’s shoes and I thought he really delivered. He did it his own way, not trying to be “Jon Light” but rather maintaining his own personality and perspective. I thought he was quite astute and funny.

I started watching TDS pretty early, around the time of the 2000 election I think or right after that. I loved it for a long time but Stewart started to get on my nerves after a while. He was too self-serious. I then became a total Colbert stan. I still love Colbert on late night but I miss his Comedy Central show and that persona.

I don’t really fault Trevor for the show’s decline in numbers. I stopped watching it, but not because I didn’t like him. I had stopped watching before Jon even left, partly because I was wearying of him but also because I didn’t want to stay up late when I could just watch the good clips the next day or whenever I had time. The way people watch TV has changed and that’s not his fault.

I wish him well in his next endeavor.

  33. JMoney says:

Trevor was the right person for TDS. Samantha Bee could literally design the show how she wanted with no notes on TBS hence why she went there. What has changed is the fact most people do not watch traditional cable TV (esp Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z) as they did when Jon Stewart was hosting TDS. Now you have multiple streamers not to mention YouTube, TikTok, etc and yes news are on those platforms. Its why cable tv viewership has been going down and why the Academy Awards and every awards show ratings will continue to plummet b/c you can take the most exciting bits so you don’ t have to watch the show to see the exciting bits.

I think Trevor honestly did alot better than most people give him credit for. His between the scenes are hilarious and insightful and he can see things from others perspectives in a non biased way. No one could have replaced Jon but Trevor did a good job of filling in the role but now the role is anochronistic so if they keep it as is, whoever will replace him will definitely struggle not b/c of their talent but just the format and venue (i.e. cable tv) its on.

  34. Athena says:

Trevor’s coverage of the royal family in the last few weeks has been pure gold. I also love his outsider’s take on American politics.

  35. Jennifer says:

I like Trevor Noah, but I don’t think his heart is in it as much as it was. Samantha Bee would be perfect or Dulce Sloan. Larry Wilmore would also be great, in my opinion. I loved his Nightly Show. The Daily Show has been important to me for a long time and I hpe they come up with someone who had the passion for it like Jon Stewart. Who knew when to leave for himself and therefore for the audience. I think this must be a difficult gig, because ultimately it is a comedy show with a bite. Where is George Carlin when you need him? (RIP).

  36. LILY says:

I really like the Daily Show with him. He offers a different point of view. He had a rough start, and took him a little bit to find his style, but I think he did a fantastic job once he got comfortable. I am not from the US, and maybe it’s just my experience, but I think he has broaden the reach of the show. He may not have good numbers on TV, but he is big on YouTube and Social Media.
I like his insights in many topics because his experiences make his voice different than other hosts.
Sorry, English is not my first language.

  37. Observer says:

Not often that I disagree with you but disagree with you here. I loved Trevor before the Daily Show and loved him even more after. He was a nice break from formulaic American comedians whom I don’t find at all funny. Won’t be continuing to watch.

  38. Little Red says:

I thought he was very good. He provided that outside of the US perspective so many Americans are ignorant about.

  39. Beverley says:

I like Jon Stewart and I adore Trevor Noah. I agree with previous comments that Trevor spoke truth to power and didn’t shy away from racial issues. Jon Stewart, like many white liberals, had virtually nothing to say about race relations. Trevor never backed away from the subject.

It was also nice to see a non-white person at the anchor desk in late night. It’ll probably be forever before we see that again.

  40. Grace says:

    Love Trevor Noah! He’s brilliant!

  41. Talthor says:

My hubby loved Jon Stewart, I thought he was meh, sorry.

Trevor Noah, to me, was a breath of fresh air. I loved him, my hubby thought he was meh 🙂

  42. Janet says:

I love Trevor for all of the reasons mentioned above. Surprised by your dislike. I never saw JS’s show.

  43. Gaah says:

I liked Trevor a lot. But part of the reason for the ratings shrinkage is because he was hardly there. He took summer of 2021 off. This summer he was on 2 weeks and then off 2 weeks. He seemed disinterested in the show since COVID. When you have that many breaks, your audience finds their entertainment elsewhere. He was an excellent host and brought more international stories to the show which are important. But I don’t disagree that a change could be good.

  44. andapanda says:

Trevor Noah was amazing and it was great to have a person of color on show. I am surprised to hear this assessment of his time there. I always looked forward to his show. Not everything was amazing all the time but in my opinion Samantha Bee would not have been right for the job. If we are talking women, Desi maybe, she’s really funny and I would totally watch her.

  45. Moxylady says:

I adored Trevor in this position. Jon was great but having a black man discuss and parse world events while also being hilarious and thoughtful and insightful was wonderful. I felt like I was watching the actual news. And laughing my ass off at the grimness of the world was so needed.

    • Jess says:

Yes! He was sooo good and didn’t shy away from important subjects. I’m happy they picked a black man over a white woman

  46. Amrita says:

I love your page but I have to say, you are definitely in the wrong here. Trevor Noah was a great replacement for Jon Stewart and I loved Jon. But Jon brought a very liberal American point of view and an American perspective. Trevor, being international, understood what the world saw and brought that to America. Not all Americans realized they weren’t that loved in the rest of the world and Noah showed that. He also highlighted good AND bad news that happened in the rest of the world which most Americans didn’t realize.

Being international myself and someone who lived in the US for a while, I realized most Americans didn’t know other countries existed (post 9/11, people got a little better). So Noah was definitely a breath of fresh air.

  47. Bibi says:

Trevor Noah is one of the most thoughtful and intelligent late-night hosts alongside others like Rachel Maddow and John Oliver. Also, you’re wrong about the declining ratings bc he actually changed the viewing demographics for TDS from old fuddy-duddies to a younger, more enlightened audience that watches the show online instead of the traditional Cable or Network TV. Could you cite the source of the information about viewing figures?

One thing I agree on is that Dulcie would make a great host and I hope she’s offered the chance.
