  1. TwinkleToes says:

Bill Cosby has turned into a delusional, narcissist egomaniac. They should never have given him those honorary degrees. He goes around blabbing like he’s earned them. Dr. Cosby, my foot.

  2. Emily says:

Oh, Colin Firth’s looking so old now! Why couldn’t he just stay the way he was in Pride and Prejudice forever? Stupid aging.

  3. Dolkite says:

I admit, Simmons response is well-written, but I still think Cosby has a very valid point. Cosbys Pound Cake speech took a lot of guts to make since a lot of blacks considered him a traitor for calling them out on the negative effects of ghetto culture.

  4. Giz says:

Cosby did actually earn a Doctor of Education degree from U of Mass in 1976. So he’s not some slub off the of street as one of you implied! The honorary degrees are after the fact!

Cosby makes a good point, but so does Simmons.

  5. WTF?!? says:

Bill Cosby was always a delusional, narcissist egomaniac, but he *did* earn an MA and a PhD after graduating from Temple in 1971 before being bestowed w/the honorariums, and in this case, he absolutely right. Empowering oneself involves stopping letting other people define you/serve as your excuse to not achieve. He’s preached this for yrs, and the only reason Simmons is against it is because it cuts into his profit margin.
    Shame on him.

  6. Oh My says:

Giz: how did he earn a doctorate when he never actually finished his bachelor’s degree at Temple?

  7. Popcorny says:

In my opinion, Bill’s earned the right to rail on this subject.
I think Simmons is being a little too defensive about Cosby’s stance.
I do not think anyone who was an adult in the 1980’s can disagree that there’s been (since the late 1980’s) a tremendous meltdown in the behavior of America’s youth -that directly coincides with the onslaught of vulgar slash-n-grab television programming (can you say:”FOX”) and the upsurge in violent entertainment venues (of just about every genre).
Just when you thought it couldn’t get lower or worse, it did.
I think Bill’s point is one of a call to arms about responsibility (moral) as role models, entertainers and non-entertainers alike.
I think if you grew up in the past generation, it’s not as understandable as the difference wouldn’t be marked or even felt at all.

  8. TwinkleToes says:

Oh My, he slid in under the radar with a “special” program. You can just tell he didn’t put in the four years.

From Wiki: After The Bill Cosby Show left the air, Cosby returned to his education. He began graduate work at the University of Massachusetts, qualifying under a special program that allowed for the admission of students who had not completed their bachelor’s degrees, but who had had a significant impact on society and/or their communities through their careers. This professional interest led to his involvement in the PBS series The Electric Company, for which he recorded several segments teaching reading skills to young children.

  9. Firestarter says:

@Oh my- He returned to finish his degree in Mass. in the 1970’s and then went on to earn his doctorate at the same Uviversity.

Just because he did not stay on at Temple does not mean he did not continue his studies.

  10. Shay says:

I saw an interview with Rita Moreno and she said Bill used his work on Electric Company to earn credits for school. For which degree I don’t know.

What Bill says doesn’t bother me at all. It reminds me of the things that most older black people say when they complain about what we’ve become. You usually learn to do two things. Brush it off and keep moving because you know they’re right but don’t want to argue. Or you act one what they’re saying because..you know they’re right. I’ve never heard Bill say anything that was wrong. Sometimes it’s hard to take the pill which is why some seem to get bent out of shape by his comments.

  11. Molly B says:

Oh My: I don’t know Mr. Cosby’s personal history but you do not necessarily need a bachelor’s to get a MA or PhD. I know a young lady who got her master’s without earning a bachelor’s degree. Yes, it is very rare but it can happen.

  12. Leni says:

Its a degree that includes both-it takes less time but is more intense. There are also even programs that are Bachelor+Masters+Doctorate. Just FYI.

  13. Sumodo says:

Back in the prehistoric era when I was a young person in New England, there was controversy over his Ed.d from the University of Massachusetts, and how he could have put in all that time. He was living in the Berkshires with his family, and with his busy work schedule, people were curious, even then. Cosby’s Ed.d. is a questionable degree.

  14. Rio says:

Am I the only woman in the world who has never found Colin Firth even remotely attractive? I’m young, but old enough to remember the worldwide swooning that was the “Pride & Prejudice” miniseries (Hell, I think my mom bought it on VHS) but he’s never done jack for me.

  15. Popcorny says:

Regardless of this man’s matriculated or non-matriculated degrees, he’s more than qualified to speak on the subject(s) that he does.

  16. I’ve never thought one way or the other about Posh and Becks, but the Dlisted story says Becks wants to name the pigs Pinky and Perky – those were the two pigs on the 1970s BBC sitcom “Good Neighbors” which was one of my favorites growing up. Now I think Becks is adorable.

  17. Tess says:

Sumodo, as a fellow survivor of the Age of Dinosaurs in New England, I remember those questions, too.

TwinkleToes, @ Wiki…you can’t really depend on it getting the facts right.

  18. knotstu says:

WHAT ARE YA GONNA DO !!!

  19. rheba says:

So many people have complained about Dr. Cosby’s remarks, but he’s not saying anything different now than he was saying way back when. He just took of the “kid gloves”.
