Tyler Perry asked the Sussexes to look for baby formula in the UK back in June

Earlier this year, there was a crisis with the domestic supply of baby formula. There were shortages of baby formula around the country and parents were really panicking. The shortages really were specific to America too, I remember reading an article about what had led to the shortages and it involved our imports of foreign-made formula. Much of it was Donald Trump’s fault, but other people were to blame, and there weren’t significant shortages in the rest of the world. All of which brings me to this story told by Tyler Perry at the Baby2Baby gala last weekend:

Last year, in the midst of the global infant formula shortage that left shelves across the world empty and families scrambling to feed their young children, an employee who works for Tyler Perry came to their boss for help. Their kid needed formula, and, like millions of families at that moment, they couldn’t find it anywhere. Not in store after store, city after city, state after state. Perry began the hunt on their behalf and came up empty. He ended up calling Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who, at the time, were in London, asking if stores across the pond were as hard up as those in the US. He told his employee that Markle was going to stores on their behalf. That’s how dire the crisis was.

Perry told the story to a group of 800 guests gathered at Los Angeles’s Pacific Design Center on Saturday evening to celebrate the annual Baby2Baby Gala, which raises money for children living in poverty.

[From Vanity Fair]

It wasn’t last year, it was this year. The crisis peaked in May and June of this year, and I believe that’s the time frame Tyler Perry is likely referencing. That would have been when Prince Harry and Meghan were in England for the Struggle Jubbly. They were in town – mostly in Windsor – for about four days total, and there were times when we didn’t see them. Were they going to local shops, looking for baby formula to bring back to California? Perhaps. They flew out of England on a private plane too, better to smuggle baby formula!! Anyway, I love that Tyler Perry just dropped that into his speech – “hey, I still talk to Harry & Meghan and I asked them for this favor…”

I am looking forward to Perry’s next installment, Madea Saves the Babies

    • Amy T says:

Did you see Michael Che’s “Madea Saves the Senate” joke on Weekend Update last week? Babies and the Senate? She’s gonna be busy!

  2. Sugarhere says:

Oh, no! The Duchess of Sussex will now be accused of snatching the milk out of the rosy mouths of England’s babies while Kate is the early years nurturer. I can’t wait for the headlines.

  3. ROAA says:

But Meghan didn’t visit the UK in the last year…..

    • Enny says:

Sure she did. For the Jubbly. They had Lili’s bday party there and everything.

      • ROAA says:

No she didn’t. The Jubbly was in this year (2022)

      • Becks1 says:

I’m sure that’s just a mischaracterization in the article. Also sometimes these days 6 months feels like 6 years. Time has no meaning anymore in my opinion lol.

    • Becks1 says:

They stopped there in April on their way to Invictus, she visited in June for the Jubbly, and they were there in September when the queen passed. Based on the timing, I think Tyler is referencing the Jubbly visit.

    • equality says:

People has it down as “this year” and even the Daily Fail got it down as “this year”. Embarrassing for VF.

    • Agreatreconing says:

‘in the last year’ (yes, @equality, VF SHOULD Be Embarrassed). The formula crisis began in March 2022. April 2022, it was becoming prominent. A third of shelves were empty. May 2022 it became a crisis. Whoever misconstrued 2021 from 2022 is…fill in the blanks.

So, I love this story for Meghan, because it shows how Tyler views her – he knows she is someone that he can call up and ask for a favor like this, and she will deliver.

But it makes me sad that the shortage was so bad that the answer was for someone in the UK to bring back some formula for someone in LA.

    • Cessily says:

It was bad, I had friends that lived close to Canada making trips searching for formal. Friends of my children’s with infants were panicked and searching alternatives. I can’t imagine what they went through. I hope they were able to bring back plenty of formula for they people who needed it. I imagine when they got the call it became a priority for the Sussex’s I love them for that.

    • kgeo says:

My great niece has allergies. It was even harder to find formula for her. Poor thing is allergic to it all. I had to send some special off brand formula to them. It wasn’t hard for me to find it online and have it shipped, but they could not find it locally because people were buying up the allergy brands when they couldn’t find their usual brand.. That’s a good reminder. I’m going to go ahead and order another 3 rounds and send it off for Christmas. Merry Christmas, here’s food.

Trump and Trumpists have so much blood on their hands, and will never be held to account for their negligent homicides. I don’t have babies, but even I was feeling the panic of that formula shortage! I love how Tyler Perry leaps into action to rescue people facing exigent circumstances. And I love how Harry and Meghan get things done under the radar, and seek no credit. Come to think of it, there are myriad ways Ms. Early Years who is sooo popular in the US could have used the formula shortage to buttress her credentials, but not a peep.

  6. Petra (Brazen Archetyped Phenomenal Woman) says:

Tyler Perry had this information since the summer. This is another example that shows the BM and RR’s are outsiders when it comes to information on the Sussexes. They have no legit sources when it comes to Prince Harry and Meghan. Next time an article from a RR quotes an unnamed source I hope we simply ignore it.

  7. Zazzoo says:

I would hope they’re lifelong friends with Tyler Perry after he helped them immensely with housing and security.

    • Agreatreckoning says:

From Tyler Perry’s own words, witnessing the Sussexes together, they just might be lifelong friends holding the same values. I don’t know where Tyler P spent his 4th of July. Do know that H&M were in Jackson Hole where Perry has a home. The beautiful thing about Perry is he helped them out because he COULD. With no expectations. Unlike, the BRF.

LOL moments. Derangers suggesting the Sussexes are paying Perry for PR; Uhmmm…Tyler Perry is pretty f#cking wealthy. Madea would slap that beyotch down.

That’s the movie I want to see. Madea goes to Buckingham Palace. Guest starring John Oliver. Sheeeet hits the fan.

  8. smh says:

    But did she bring it?

  9. Kay says:

It’s a feel-good story in a way, but as the mom of an 11 month old, it drives me nuts that the entire media is referring to the formula shortage as if it’s over. For many of us, it’s barely improved. The shelves are still sparse and we still have to solicit friends and family to keep an eye out. When my milk supply started drying up several months ago, I purposely picked one of the most readily-available formulas, and it’s still difficult to find half the time.

  10. Julianna says:

I love how Tyler Perry has come out and told this story and it made headlines. You know how salty they are feeling knowing Tyler has subtly dropped the note he still stays in touch with them and even well enough to have asked for a favor.

  11. jferber says:

Tyler Perry is really one of the kindest and most generous Hollywood people I have seen for a long, long, long time. Love him always.
