John Travolta gets teary on Ellen, thanks fans

John Travolta was on “Ellen” yesterday with his nine-year-old daughter Ella for an emotional interview. Ellen didn’t ask him about the death of his son Jett last January or even really get the chance to ask John how he was doing. He started off right away with a heartfelt thanks to everyone for all the love and support that’s been sent his way, which was very sweet. He said it with such enthusiasm that you can tell it really has meant something and been helpful for John and his family.

The entire interview on “Ellen” was pretty emotional – John teared up when talking about how proud he was of Ella on her first acting role.

John Travolta says he is grateful for all of the support he has received since his son Jett died at age 16 following a seizure this past January.

“I just want to take one moment to thank each and every one of you throughout this country, through out the world for all your support and all your love for our family,” he says on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Wednesday. “Thank you very much.”

His 9-year-old daughter Ella — who makes her film debut with her dad in their upcoming comedy Old Dogs (out Nov. 25) — also appears with him for her first talk show interview.

“You are so proud of her, aren’t you?” DeGeneres asks Travolta, 45, of his daughter.

“I’m holding back the tears…” he says as DeGeneres hands him a tissue.

Travolta also reveals his new hobby: tennis. “I play everyday,” he says. “I play at midnight, kind of vampire-style.” Who does he play with? His housing staff. “The house manager and the house maintenance person,” he says. “At midnight, we go to the local tennis court.”

[From Us Weekly]

It must be nice to have paid employees that you can MAKE join you for tennis at midnight. Actually John explained that his staff keeps the same hours he does (which must be “vampire-style,” as he put it) so it’s probably a nice break.

John told a funny story about the first time he flew on an airplane at eight years old. While he’s always been a big aviation buff and had already been collecting everything plane-related that he could get his then-little hands on, he didn’t know that planes had bathrooms. He hadn’t gone, and was so excited that he wet his pants. It’s a funny story the way he tells it. Funnier still that he’d admit to it.

John seems to be doing fine, and I keep thinking how great that is. But then I remind myself he’s an actor. Really there’s no way he could be holding it together and a regular, jovial guy like he’s coming across. Actor or not, it’s amazing that he’s able to put on a brave face and do the publicity rounds for his movie. And it’s probably nice to have something good to focus on, and his pride in Ella clearly shows.

    Their eyes are sad.

I really don’t wanna start anything, because he seems to be a nice guy and he’s suffered a lot this year so maybe we’re all more forgiving because of that.. but is this sort of blatant nepotism really okay?

  4. Firestarter says:

Hey, nothing wrong with a little nepotism. I am sure if we all had the connections, we’d be using them too.

Pitt had Shiloh in one of his movies, Moore has had her kids in her movies. It is Hollywood, and that is the way it goes. Not what you know, but who you know.

If my parents were in the business, I’d take advantage of offers that came my way and I would not be embarrassed to say it either.

He’s doing the publicity & interviews for his daughter. They have to stay strong for her…their lives can’t end, they have her to think about.

John is very lucky to have a strong support system and help from people around him. The worst thing in the world is to lose a child!!!

I just thought about the importance of HELP with depression and in times like that, hearing the news about the Goalkeeper of the National German Soccer team, Robert Enke, 32….

    Quoting:

“The German goalkeeper, whose first child died from a heart condition at the age of two, threw himself in front of an express train last night.

Enke,32, who played for the German squad as well as Hanover 96,had struggled to cope with her death and still visited her grave every day.

Yesterday,he attended training as usual before driving his Mercedes 2 a railway crossing at Neustadt-just 200 yards from her burial site.

He left his wallet and keys on the passenger seat along with some loose change. He did not bother to lock the car.

Minutes later, he flung himself in front of the oncoming Hanover to Bremen express which was travelling at 100mph.”

    Sad…

I know someone who lost a teenaged child last year. It’s beyond devastating. I wish JT and his family all the luck. He has always seemed like a decent guy (Scientology notwithstanding).

I grew up near the area where they live and have friends and acquaintences who have had the opportunity to interract with them.. I have heard that they are very nice and friendly if not a bit strange.. and his hours are no secret, he has said more than once that he is basically nocturnal. Hey, he can pull that off, the rest of us have to work and keep a schedule. I’m glad to see them moving forward as best they can and even if he is “out there” he was one of my absolute faves as a child and Kelly is just gorgeous, and they have been married forever by hollywood standards. Good for them, whatever their “normal” is, it seems to be working for them.

I don’t see the problem with a little nepotism. My grandfather owned an appliance repair business, and now my dad owns it, and nobody complains. I think acting is like a trade, and it’s ok as long as they don’t force her into it.

I feel for the Travoltas. I hope they heal soon. However, John is 55, not 45.

I have seen the death by railroad more than once firsthand. I can not convey to you the feelings that puts on the train crew. I hate having to be the one (the conductor) who has to get off the train to go find the body.
