Kate Moss’s motto: “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”

Kate Moss gave an interview to Women’s Wear Daily to promote her new perfume, “Vintage” as well as her clothing line at Topshop. WWD notes that Kate is also developing a hair care line, and is looking to develop her own makeup line to go with her clothing and perfume line. Now, while I don’t hate Kate or anything, I really don’t agree with the hip fashion people who consider her the kind of groundbreaking style icon who always looks great and/or cool. Some of the stuff Kate wears is interesting, and I recognize that she definitely has a “look”, but most of time she looks like what she is – a tired, strung-out, cokehead party girl, albeit a party girl who keeps her junk together a lot better than someone like Lindsay Lohan. Anyway, the interview is slightly interesting, because Kate rarely gives interviews, and because she’s a lot more self-deprecating than I was expecting. She claims one of her mottos is “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” but she admits she doesn’t really adhere to it:

WWD: How do you define beauty?
Kate Moss: It sounds really corny, but I think that if you’re beautiful inside, it shows on the outside for sure. You can be a pretty face, but if you’re not a nice person, it just doesn’t work. I’m not traditionally a beauty, but apparently people think I’m all right. If you’re a nice person, it definitely helps.

WWD: Do you have a mentor?
KM: My close friends, probably. There are lots of women I look up to, but mentors are someone you talk to and not just admire. A lot of my friends that I trust are my mentors. They would say, “Oh no, Kate, that’s not a good look.”

WWD: Do you have a motto?
KM: There are loads. There’s “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.” That’s one of them. You try and remember, but it never works.

WWD: You’re a business woman as well as a fixture in front of the camera. What’s the secret to effective multitasking?
KM: I think women are really good at multitasking. Men just cannot do it. My boyfriend cannot talk on the phone and [answer] if I ask him a question or get dressed at the same time. I can do all of that—talk on the phone, answer a question, get dressed and put my makeup on all at the same time. Women just do, don’t they? I think it’s something to do with babies. When you have a child, you have to be able to multitask.

WWD: It’s been rumored that you’re keen to build a career in music. Is that true?
KM: No. I like to dabble. I’ve got lots of friends who are musicians, so if they ask me to do things, I’ll go and do it for a laugh. I don’t want to be a pop star or anything like that.

WWD: Whose style do you admire?
KM: Loulou de la Falaise, Amanda Harlech and Catherine Deneuve.

WWD: High maintenance or low?
KM: Definitely not [high maintenance].

[From Women’s Wear Daily]

Several years ago, back before Kate gave birth to her daughter and she was still the face of the waif trend, I read a defense of Kate’s body type in a men’s magazine. The guy who wrote the article acknowledged that Kate was too skinny for his tastes, but he still thought she was beautiful because she looked like a naturally slender, well-proportioned woman. Personally, I think Kate looks better after becoming a mother, because she’s “filled-out” a bit more, and I can’t count all of her bones. I don’t have any doubt that Kate starved herself at various times (and the drugs probably helped too), but I like that she now acknowledges that she can’t even adhere to her own “starve yourself to look good” motto.

she sounds more grounded than i would have expected. shame on me for judging the book by its cover.

  2. fizXgirl314 says:

isn’t this girl a cokehead? Wouldn’t that be the primary reason for her thinness and not her apathy toward tasty things?

  3. Firestarter says:

Nothing feels as good as skinny tastes!

  4. Pole says:

To me it seems she wised up after she broke up with Pete What-his-name. I like her.

  5. heb says:

Im sorry but Mexican food tastes way better than being skinny feels.

  6. Madelyn Rose says:

I have always been a fan of Kate. She is who she is and doesn’t make apologies. So she (presumably still) does coke…half of the celebrities out there do; probably more. From all accounts I have read about Kate, people say she is warm and funny. She has aged a bit from the partying, but hey, I would probably party a lot too if I was rich and famous by 14!

And don’t get me started on how beautiful she and Johnny Depp were back in the day…perfection.

Pole, I am with you on her break up with Pete Doherty. What was she thinking!?

  7. Ana says:

I tested this last night while eating pizza and drinking soda—she’s wrong.

But then I realized that she uses coke and most likely adderall to help her. Don’t expect me to test those…
I’ll just continue on being a skinny fat person.

  8. Kelly says:

So says the woman who created the waif trend – otherwise known as heroin chic. Hope she enjoys being the legend of eating disorders. Wonder if she told her infant – this bottle doesn’t taste as good as emaciation feels! Lastly, love the dead animals wrapped around her bones.

  9. danielle says:

I used to be skinny…skinny doesn’t feel as good as food tastes. I could make a list of foods that taste better than skinny feels, but might take all morning….food, how I love you!

  10. Pole says:

@Madelyn Rose: I don’t even want to think about what she was thinking when she was with him. He’s like the walking definition of vile. Jaime Hince on the other hand is quite cute IMO. But I think it must be hard for her with men. Imagine having Johnny Depp as an ex.

  11. fizXgirl314 says:

madelyn… did you just excuse someone’s cocaine use? wow… love is blind?

  12. Eileen Yover says:

She totally stole this from Jenny Craig! That’s their motto. My sister inlaw owns a JC store.

  13. Emily says:

Um, she said in an interview a year or two ago that when she was starting out, she was told to diet and she was miserable and hungry all the time. I think as she’s gotten more famous, she has more command over her body (as opposed to magazine editors or whoever), and has gone to her natural body:still skinny, but a natural, healthier skinny.

  14. Nebraska says:

@ Kelly and danielle brilliant comments!

  15. Cheyenne says:

@ fizXgirl314: She’s probably living off black coffee and cigarettes. I was a 2-pack-a-day smoker for 12 years between ages 18 and 30 and I can tell you from experience smoking dulls your taste buds.

Whoever said a woman can’t be too thin or too rich is half full of bullshit. Five feet seven and size 6 looks good. Five feet seven and size 0 looks awful.

  16. Aliiii says:

silly cow….wonder how many girls at this moment in time are sticking their fingers down their throat or chucking their dinner away?! i personally feel sorry for her daughter..shes going to have a low body image when shes older with a mother whos mind is so distorted.

  17. Nicole says:

That is a terrible thing to say. I have suffered from an eating disorder for 10 years; and I find her comment offensive and reckless. Way to promote ED’s Kate, you idiot.

  18. Cerenatee says:

Over 30 million people are overweight or obese with millions dying every year due to health related consequences and this is what you choose to focus on? If you’ve suffered from an eating disorder for over 10 years then you know it’s not caused by a stray comment. It takes a lot more than a comment to hate yourself to that level of insanity. And I would rather be a size 6 and not eat mexican food than be a size 18 and eat it.
