Robin Wright dyes her hair, drops the “Penn”

Actress Robin Wright Penn, the estranged and reportedly long-suffering wife of Sean Penn, showed up to the premiere of her new movie, “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee,” with two very noticeable changes: first, she’s once again dropped the “Penn” from her surname. And second, she’s traded in her familiar long blond hair for a darker shade. While Robin doesn’t elaborate on what prompted her to file for divorce this time, she has said in multiple interviews that this time, the separation from Sean Penn is for good, and she’s looking forward to starting over.

Robin Wright is doing just fine without Sean Penn. The actress has dropped Penn from her name and turned her blond hair brown. She wowed guests at the star-studded Cinema Society screening of her movie “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee” on Sunday night. Showing off her slim figure in a Herve Leger dress, she was overheard saying, “This is all about new beginnings for me.” Wright was seen chatting with writer/director Rebecca Miller and husband Daniel Day-Lewis at the packed party at the Breslin attended by stars, including Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Billy Crudup. Her co-star Blake Lively, accompanied by boyfriend Penn Badgley, was also the talk of the evening in a plunging white jacket. But Lively admitted she still gets nervous seeing herself on screen. She told Page Six: “I loved the role, but it is hard to watch myself with so many people in the theater.”

In a recent “Entertainment Weekly” interview, Robin gets a little more specific about her new beginnings, and what this new role in “Pippa Lee” meant to her.

In recent months, the actress has overhauled just about every aspect of her life. In August, she filed for divorce from Sean Penn, shed his last name and put an end to the turbulent 20-year relationship, during which they broke up and reconciled at least three times. Shortley thereafter, she moved back to L.A. (with kids Dylan, 18, and Hopper, 16) after 12 years of raising a family in Marin County, near San Franscisco. Her new home, in Santa Monica, happens to be on the same eucalyptus-shaded street where she lived 25 years ago while shooting her breakthrough role in 1987’s The Princess Bride. “I didn’t want to raise my kids in this weird, sycophantic society,” Wright says, referring to Hollywood. “If you have celebrity parents, it’s not a good recipe for the kids, or anyone at any age. Look at what Brad and Angelina go through.”

The notoriously selective star has also thrown herself back into work. After stealing scenes from Russell Crowe in the political thriller State of Play, she won a chorus of critical shout-outs playing a chain-smoking flirt in last month’s New York, I Love You. Now she’s about to do double-duty in Robert Zemeckis’ 3-D animated holiday extravaganza Disney’s A Christmas Carol as both a 9-year-old moppet and Scrooge’s neglected fiance, Belle. Then comes her substantial and potentially career-changing role as the title character in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, out Nov. 27.

“I read the script, and I was like, ‘I’ll give my left tit to play this role,’ and that’s huge for me, because I don’t have any tits,” she says. “Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and the Kates all have gotten great roles, and were so good in them, and now I got one,” she smiles. “I finally got one.”

Wright’s face darkens when asked about her divorce from Penn. “I don’t want to talk about it in great detail because it will all be reflected back to him, and I’m not interested in sharing that with people,” she says. “I have no regrets. I have two wonderful kids, and when I’m asked ‘Why did you leave?’ I guess, it was just ‘I’m going over here now.’” She takes a breather to gaze out at the Pacific and adds her last two words on the subject: “New book.”

[From Entertainment Weekly]

I’ve always thought Robin Wright was a fantastic actress who just needed the right role – maybe this one is it. She certainly seems a lot happier these days, even while Penn has taken up with a 25-year-old swimsuit model. As for the hair color change, I’m thinking it might be for a role or something. It actually makes her look a bit younger than the blond but I don’t think it’s a long-term thing. I’m rooting for her, and for her career.

too dark…brown looks good on her, but a lighter shade would be better.

  2. mockingbird says:

Looked much better and brighter as a blonde…

Glad she lost “his last name.”

  3. gg says:

Oh good grief! So is dying your hair black the new divorce pick-me-up? BAD CHOICE! It looks like hell on everybody, especially blondes, and – newsflash — IT AGES YOU. I know it says she went “brown”, but it’s so dark it comes off as black in photos.

When you get older you’re supposed to go lighter to lessen the severe effects of aging skin. Women generally go shorter as well, so they can age more gracefully and not look like ‘mutton dressed as lamb’.

  4. princess pea says:

@ gg – so you’re “supposed” to go lighter with age, huh? And what do the blondes do then? Aim for white or shave it off?

  5. n says:

she looks good. she’s got a terrific shape.
    hope she finds someone special.

Glad she dumped Sean. he’s a no-where man.

  6. Tia C says:

She looks great. A lighter shade is definitely more flattering to her, but either way, she is rocking that dress!

  7. Lauren says:

I am happy for Robin that she is finally getting her life back. Sean treated her like crap for years, and was extremely emotionally abusive towards her. Robin is beautiful & I wish her the best.

  8. Lee says:

I think she looks beautiful. Her blue eyes and the dark hair are a lovely combo, and she has an amazing figure, which that dress does justice.

I completely disagree that long hair is “unsuitable” on a woman over 40, or any age really. Thank goodness the days when attractiveness was considered gone after 35 are over, and woman aren’t expected to wear shapeless frumpy dresses and perm their chopped hair, as if their best years are behind them. I really see red when I read a statement like “mutton dressed as lamb”. Karma is a bitch, and someone who spouts that vitriol is not gonna enjoy getting older!

  9. BitterBetty says:

She looks fab either way. look @ her – she is WAY too good for that ass faced tool! so glad she cut the deadweight and is moving on with her life.

  10. Green Is Good says:

Wow! Looking good is the BEST revenge. Team Robin.

She wasted too many years on a raging jackass like Sean Penn. He’s a great actor, but a complete narcissist.

  11. GatsbyGal says:

Oh my gosh, that dark hair is like a facelist! She looks ten years younger and a lot more fresh-faced. And also just more refreshed all-around. But I’m sure getting away from Sean Penn will do that to a gal.

  12. bros says:

dont mind the hair, but the eyebrows….bad job whoever dyed them. yech.

  13. Cinderella says:

She looks fabulous. I like the haircolor (it looks so healthy) but she’d look better with some bangs.

  14. Firestarter says:

The hair is way too dark IMHO. She looks good, but would look better, I think a few shades lighter. Too dark adds age to a face as well. She looks better as a blonde, but maybe a darker blonde.

All in all though, she is a beautiful woman and is well rid of that ugly man she was married to. His ugliness is as much internal as it is external.

  15. sg says:

The dark hair with those blue eyes looks amazing! I’ve never seen her look so good.

  16. icky says:

    she looks awesome

  17. cara says:

She looks amazing!!!! Has anyone ever seen her in “Sorry, Haters”. She was unbelievable. She’s one of THE best actresses out there today.

  18. Beth says:

She looks great and I think she looks younger.

  19. Jillian says:

Not diggin’ the dark hair. She was better as a blonde.

  20. Raven says:

With all the talk of arms in the media among the famous over the past year or so, I find I always look at woman’s arms, especially those women over 40. Robin Wright has the best arms on a mature woman that I can remember seeing. Not saggy, ropey, veiny, truck driverish or too skinny–they are perfect. I don’t know what, if anything, she does for them, but there are many celebs who could take a cue from her on this.

  21. california angel says:

She is really pretty IMO. I am forever biased because princess bride was practically my bible as a child, that and the sound of music. lol.

  22. TaylorB says:

Regardless of hair color, Buttercup looks lovely. Ditching that sh*thead of a husband certainly seems to agree with her.

  23. guilty pleasures says:

I saw her interviewed on (I think) Ellen last week. She came across as funny, intelligent, an all around nice person. Her hair (if that is what defines a person) looks great. Probs her natural colour?
    Good luck to her!

  24. fizXgirl314 says:

I think she also got some eye color enhancing contacts… those things really brighten up your eyes… they amplify whatever color you already have… I think a lot of people don’t realize that stars who have really pretty eyes probably have eye enhancing contacts on… you can really tell the difference…

  25. Elle says:

I like it–esp the way it contrasts with her blue cat-like eyes. Go Robin! Good for you for letting go of Penn!

  26. Kelly says:

The blond hair ages her more. Makes her look washed out in that Californian (yikes) Pam Anderson way. The brunette makes her blue eyes pop.

How ironic: Penn’s taking up with a much younger swimsuit model; meanwhile, his 43-year old ex can still *be* a swimsuit model.

Good for her and “the divorce diet.” He was 180 pounds she needed to lose.

  27. Mairead says:

Maybe it’s just the makeup and lighting in the more recent photo, but she looks very “refreshed”. I hadn’t seen her in anything really until “The Secret Life of Pippa Lee” and loved the fact that she looked so natural, but still pretty fab, in it.

(It is actually an enjoyable film, I thought Blake Lively did a good job in her section, Julianne was excellent and even Keanu was most watchable 😉 )

But the main thing about a drastic hair change as well as the whole name thing, is that she has definitely cast off the spectre of Sean Penn. A few weeks of dark hair is deserved after that surely 😉

(just on the hair thing, gg wasn’t saying that she should cut her hair, but she is right that as your skin loses pigment as you grow older, strong colours look very harsh and fake, so normally one should go lighter to compensate. This is more important with darker haired women)

  28. Thayer says:

Wow! I think a bit lighter shade would be softer but she looks amazing!! She is radiant! What an incredible figure after 2 children and who could survive Sean Penn??? I hope she gets a hot new young boyfriend!! That would be sweet! Have fun with you new self Robin!! http://lkthayer.wordpress.com/

  29. Rosanna says:

MUCH better as a blonde! Her wrinkles show as a brunette whereas they didn’t as a blonde.

  30. Who Cares says:

I think the hair is a little too dark, but whatever makes her happy is good. I really hope she catches a few breaks! She’s a wonderful actress and deserves some happiness after 20 years with that prick.

  31. gg says:

@ Princess Pea. Yes. You are. If you’re blonde then you’re already there, smarty.

  32. Bee says:

I love darker hair on her! She looks so much prettier as a brunette.

  33. Popcorny says:

Robin has always looked like she was in her 40’s, a tad mannish. Now it’s really working for her and she wears her 40something very well, blonde or brunette.

  34. fragility squared says:

    Dear Robin;

You’re free, finally! Please reconsider my offer and let’s prove that we are indeed meant to be. Yes, I still love you intensely even after this much time; I only hope you still feel some inkling of the same.

No, the last wasn’t a mistake… just a misstep is all. I waited and now I will be the one to fix an angel with a broken wing.

Perhaps while your dance card is briefly open?

    Yours always;

    mcgee

  35. Enonymous says:

Blonde hair does age people more while dark/brunette hair, if done right, can make you look younger and more refreshed. I think it worked for her in this case, with the blonde hair she looked a little plain and tired and now she looks very sexy. So good for her.

  36. gg says:

Dark hair accentuates any wrinkles you are getting/already have. It makes you look harsher. Trust me. It’s in every beauty guide on the planet. It’s why people often get highlights put in their dark hair more as they get older to take away the saggy skin look. Robin has lank hair and didn’t take care of it while it was blonde, is why it looks dead.

  37. pumak says:

great new look!!! looks so much younger!!!!
