Martha Stewart: Rachel Ray is not a good thing

wenn2635619

How much would you pay to see a cage fight between Martha Stewart and Rachel Ray? Like, all of our combined checking accounts, right? Because Martha would take that bitch down. Martha was interviewed for Nightline this week (it hasn’t been aired yet), and Martha dishes on her daytime chef/lifestyle queen competition. Martha sniffs that Rachel’s “new” cookbook is full of all of Rachel’s old recipes, and “that’s not good enough” for Martha. But Martha admits that Rachel isn’t doing any false advertising, claiming that Rachel is “more of an entertainer … with her bubbly personality, than she is a teacher, like me. That’s not what she’s professing to be.” Us Weekly got in touch with Rachel, and she’s smart enough not contradict the queen of all:

Martha Stewart says Rachael Ray can’t hold a candle to her in the kitchen.

In her first television interview since serving five months in prison in 2004 for lying to investigators about a well-timed stock trade, Stewart, 68, talks to ABC News’ Nightline about rebuilding her brand — and slams Ray, 41, one of her TV competitors.

“Well, to me, she professed that she could — cannot bake,” Stewart says of Ray in the interview, airing Thursday. “She — just did a new cookbook which is just a re-edit of a lot of her old recipes. She — and that’s not good enough for me.”

When it comes to writing a book, Stewart says she want to publish something that “is a unique and lasting thing. Something that will really fulfill a need in someone’s library.” Ray, she says, “is different.”

Stewart says Ray is “more of an entertainer … with her bubbly personality, than she is a teacher, like me. That’s not what she’s professing to be.”

Do Stewart’s remarks make Ray mad?

“Why would it make me mad?” Ray asks. “Her skill set is far beyond mine. That’s simply the reality of it.”

Ray adds that “that doesn’t mean that what I do isn’t important too… I don’t consider it needling. I really just think she’s being honest. She does have a better skill set than I do when it comes to producing a beautiful, perfect, high-quality meal.” Says Ray, “I’d rather eat Martha’s than mine, too.”

[From Us Weekly]

This is why Rachel Ray pisses me off. Rachel is basically admitting that her deal is doing everything half-assed, from lifestyle stuff to food. Which is fine – there are a lot of busy people out there, and not everyone has time to make Martha Stewart-quality food or crafts. But what I hate is the smaller point Martha is making – that Rachel is profiting (big time) from this half-assed sh-t. That Rachel is considered some kind of foodie, or that she’s even fit to be mentioned in the same breath as Martha pisses me off, but that Rachel is so successful at being this cheap, budget, half-assed version is asinine. Rachel should be ashamed of herself if she put out a “new” cookbook that had all of the old half-assed recipes as her other cookbooks. Disgusting. Team Martha forever.

Everyone was worried about Martha getting in trouble with the inmates in prison.

Obviously, bitch showed them how to crochet shanks. I love Martha, she never stops being nasty and rude. You just know if she were invited to the White House, she’d decline because the chefs were not of her class and frankly, she’d call the Obamas vulgar.

  2. Stephie says:

Not a big fan of either. I can toleralte RR though but only in small doses. And I know Martha’s supposed to be IT but have you seen her (talk) show? She doesn’t seem to care who she has on or why they’re there, and can’t be bothered to prepare for them. Irksome. She may have been IT but I think her time has passed.

  3. gooniegirl says:

Kudos to Rachel Ray for handling it so graciously. Martha Stewart is a crotchety old woman. Bleh!

I’d rather eat at Rachel Ray’s….way more fun and way less stuffy 🙂

  4. TwinkleToes says:

Martha is the best- at everything. I guess Rachel’s success convinces Gwyneth Paltrow that she can do it too.

  5. Firestarter says:

ITA. Rachel Ray- ANNOYING! I will say though, I was given one of her “Garbage Bowls” that she sells on QVC, and I love it. It is great to throw your peelings and trimmings in when you are cutting things up. Better than the disposal!

  6. fizXgirl314 says:

Does this woman have no fucking edit button? I lost all respect for her when she talked shit about Jessica’s dog being eaten by a coyote… in a similar respect, she shouldn’t have “allowed” her dogs to be blown up in that kennel…

Both these women cater to completely different audiences…in fact, MOST women would probably be more apt to follow rey than her because most women don’t make a gazillion dollar living making doilies and carefully bondages their chicken with string before they bake it… she really should stfu or learn some manners. especially considering she is supposed to be someone who dispenses proper ettiquete..

the only thing that pisses me off about rey is that she is spineless… she couldn’t stand up for herself… does she EVER? she couldn’t respond with something along the lines of “most women would identify more wiht me than her”…

besides, martha stewart has an extensive collection with k-mart… last I checked, that wasn’t exactly the epitome of quality… she really should just stfu and learn some class at this point… *eyeroll*

  7. stinabelle says:

I have never liked Rachel Ray. It’s more her voice than anything else.

  8. Guest says:

    they are equally annoying…

  9. lucy2 says:

While I agree that no one should reap huge success for being mediocre, Martha kind of does the same thing – she is NOT cut out to be a TV show host, yet she still has her show because I’m sure it’s profitable.
I’ve only watched Martha a handful of times, because each time she comes across as snooty, rude, and annoyed by the guests on her show. I’m sure there are far better talk show hosts out there watching her and thinking “that’s not good enough for me”.

  10. Jillian says:

Give me Martha any day of the week.

  11. atticus says:

I don’t think Rachel Ray is saying she does things half-assed. She appeals to me because she shows shortcuts to making a decent, homecooked meal. She is simply saying that she doesn’t have the same skill set as Martha, who probably plucks her chickens herself before making a casserole, vs Ray who, like most of us, buys it in the store.

I like Rachel Ray a lot in small doses. I really like her 30 minute meal show. I can’t do her talk show though…the voice is soooooooo grating. I respect her because she’s never tried to be anything she’s not – point proven by her response to Martha’s dig.

  12. Cheyenne says:

The only thing I learned from Martha was how to fold a fitted sheet.

  13. TwinkleToes says:

I am going to a taping of Martha’s next week in Chelsea. I am really just going to see how annoyed she really is with everyone. Nothing better than when Rosie O’Donnell is a guest. Martha tries not to boil over. God please, let Rosie be the celebrity guest.

  14. BonBiz says:

Martha has a TON of people creating all the good things for her. Not that RR doesn’t have help, but at least she’s not pretending to have plenty of time to create all these things and still cook a 7-course meal for 30 of her closest friends.

But, don’t really like either of them.

  15. Lem says:

I really wish the “whatever Martha’ show was better, they hooked me with the premise get a big fail for execution

  16. Lantana says:

    Eww.

  17. Mel says:

Rachel Ray is annoying and does things half assed. There is absolutely no comparison. The moment I saw Rachel Ray make chili burgers with cut up hot dogs in the patties I changed the channel and will never go back! Makes me gag a little just thinking about it!I have always been and will always be TEAM MARTHA.

  18. Megan says:

lmao… my hubby pointed out how much RR talks while she’s cooking, I never noticed how much she talks until he said that, now i can’t watch anymore… haha

  19. danielle says:

Hey Martha, at least Rachel’s not a convicted felon! I don’t love Rachel, but she clearly fills a need. When I get home from work at 6:30, I don’t have time to cook jack from scratch.

  20. OXA says:

Rachel Ray shows many people that would otherwise be intimidated by Martha’s perfection, that 30 minute meals are not rocket science. She keeps meals easy so anyone with basci skills can give them a whirl.

  21. Firestarter says:

@Danielle- Well it isn’t like she was a gun toting crack dealer who did time for selling her wares on a school playground.

  22. qb says:

I use to like RR back when she only did food network and now I realize how annoying she is.

  23. Belle Bella says:

    Team Martha!

  24. Essie says:

Martha Stewart has been a STAR for 30 years or more and she knows her stuff. The food she cooks is easy and family friendly and some of the recipes take no more than 30 minutes and they don’t look a total mess afterward the way Rachael’s meals do!! Rachael is such a mess that looking at her food turns my stomach.

Having said that, I have to give props to Rachael for making something out of nothing. The woman is basically a home cook but she has used what she knows and her (annoying) personality to become a star and a millionaire. So, kudos to her. But when it comes to actually eating the food, I much prefer Martha, the perfectionist to Rachael the mess!!

  25. Annicka says:

I would totally pay to see Martha and Rachel throw down. Martha would trash her. I love watching the Food Network all day long, and whenever Rachel’s show pops up I change the channel. It isn’t enough to put it on mute, I don’t want to give her show one more rating.

  26. Emily says:

Who doesn’t know how to bake? That’s like the easiest thing you can cook! Mmm, cookies. Damn, I’m hungry now.

  27. driving ms dayz says:

I’m surprised you don’t like RR, I like her, and I have used some of her idea’s. cooking a meal in 30 minutes is a man’s dream. now martha, I don’t like, never have, and now that she is a convicted felon, how could you like her?!? she acts as if she’s better than the rest of us, guess what martha, we didn’t go to jail.

  28. jeannified says:

Well, Rachel Ray is not my fave by a long shot, but she is right in the way she responded. Besides, there ARE alot of BUSY people out there, who don’t have alot of time, and enjoy her recipes. I get her magazines and have made a dessert out of it, and had a couple of her dishes that others have made and they were FAB!!! BTW…I have ALL of Paula Deen’s cookbooks, and she has recycled recipes, and slightly changed ingredients names of the same dish. I was surprised when I first saw that, but oh well. It just makes it easier for me to find, if I can’t remember what cookbook a certain dish is in. 😉

  29. TwinkleToes says:

Martha makes paper lantern lights from christmas lights using 2 paper bags. It’s brilliant and I’m doing that for the holidays but with those paper balloons you make from a piece of paper. I just finished looking over your Food Network ad (to the right) for Thanksgiving. I can’t believe I actually bookmarked a blog ad!

  30. TwinkleToes says:

I am so making that sage apple sausage dressing and caramel applie pie. —>

  31. TaylorB says:

    Martha scares me.

  32. Peach says:

I think it’s awesome that Martha Stewart created a million dollar enterprise showcasing what is traditionally ‘women’s work’. Think about it. She exploited the hell out of it and lined her pockets. That’s fantastic in so many ways.

Plus I have a feeling she might be more fun then she lets on. I saw her on Conan back in the day. She took a bite of a Big Mac and washed it down with whiskey. Woman didn’t even blink.

Any woman strong enough to pull of the crap she has gets my respect. Maybe not my adoration. But certainly respect.

  33. Mel says:

Peach: I remember her on Conan doing that! It was great! Did you see the year before when she ate a cold Taco Bell burrito on his show and washed it down with a 40 oz? Classic!

  34. mj says:

Team Martha! Good for RR for being successful, I can’t stand her but I’m all for women succeeding.

I agree with Peach – I suspect Martha’s probably lots of fun in private. I never knew anyone who grew up in such a large family (in NJ, to boot!) that didn’t have a great sense of humor.

  35. Julie says:

They are completely different animals. I enjoyed Rachel’s 30 minute meals and sometimes her travel show..I think it was called $10 a day something. I do not like her talk show because I find her annoying but I think Martha intimidates her guests a bit. She is right when she says she’s a teacher..I remember some no-nonsense teachers like her in school and I was too afraid not to pay attention. I have been a fan of Martha since I saw her put a turkey in puff pastry in High School….Love You Martha!!!! You Rock.

  36. eternalcanadian says:

I’m not surprised RR isn’t a good thing. When she first started out on telly, she was okay, and I liked those $40 a day travel shows, but now she is just doing the same old same old. those “friends” she has on her shows, they are so annoying! I have always liked Martha, even if she is bad with business stuff that landed her in prison and she can be a downright witch at times, her shows have never failed to keep me interested all these years. I stopped watching RR’s shows when she stopped doing the $40 a day shows. her 30-minute meals and the hour-long show just aren’t good things anymore. Team Martha! 😉

  37. BtheG says:

The FUGLY FONEY FELON calling someone elses pot BLACK?

Put that BEE-OCH, Stewart, back in PRISON where she BELONGS!!!

Martha Stewart should be banned from the airways given all the life savings she cost so many individuals and families with her stock scam crap.

    BtheG

  38. bella mama says:

RR annoys the crap out of me HOWEVER, she has stated a hundred times over that she is NOT a chef and doesnt pretend to be one. she’s everywoman. she’s everyday common, cooking for the busy lives we lead.

Martha is high end, and also annoys the crap out of me with her pretentiousness, but i love to use her ideas

  39. YeaRight! says:

Paula Deen or the Neelys on Food Network….are wonderful.

Rachel Ray and Martha Stewart? Meh. Not so much.

  40. TS says:

They are both annoying. But would rather eat something Martha cooked for sure. RR is even more grating then Martha could ever be. That voice, talking to her food, the baby talk arrrrrrrrghhhhh. Yummo, I know, come on kids, the EVVO crap, I cannot watch her anymore. Yes Martha is a bitch, but she seems much more chill on Conan and Letterman

  41. Roma says:

    I. Love. Martha.

I have a very weird obsession with her, like I’d just like to follow her around while she prepares for a dinner party.

I love having people over and I’ll pour through her website the week or two before to pick up a tip or two. And I’ll admit it: her Homekeeping Handbook was the best gift my mother has given me in a long time.

  42. Apples and Oranges says:

I have watched both from time to time and like/dislike each for different reasons. One thing you can say about RR she would not trash anyone or say she is superior…Did Martha Stewart forget she went to prison? She is an ex-con for crying out loud! How she can still be so stuck up is a testament to her colossal ego. She is rude to her guests and impatient. Many of them look terrifed of making a mistake..it’s painful to watch. At least when I see a recipe I think I might like to make on RR I can watch without cringing. Martha needs to do a reality check…I guess not even prison taught her humility. Get a clue MS: being rich does not mean you have class as you prove over and over.

  43. Minx2 says:

Martha is awesome. Love her tight-ass attitude. RR annoys the hell out of me. At least she has the sense not to argue.

  44. shelby says:

the food rachel makes is disgusting.

  45. Donita Hatch says:

Martha is a great teacher. No argument there. But you will never find Rachel Ray asking Martha to teach her how to stay out of jail. Different genres, different personalities, different morals.

  46. Bec says:

I worked for the publishers of Martha Stewarts cookbooks and met her once. The office was completely silent as she walked through murmuring hello’s to all of us. It was like meeting the Queen. She is not warm or cuddly. They also publish Rachael Ray’s cookbooks. She was kind of a bitch to me on the phone, though I never met her in person.

  47. Vanessa says:

We have to talk about the REAL audiece that follows Rachel Ray, and that is women who pretend and think they can cook when they really can’t. Cooking is an art…now a days women have become SO LAZY that programs like Rachel Ray or Semi homemade have become very popular. Although Martha might not have the best personality, she is true to 1 and only thing..the art and love for cooking. It is a lie that her recipes require expensive ingredients, they might require more time and preparation but in reality making chicken broth from scratch for example is way cheaper and healthier that opening a can of stock…I am tired of women saying “I cook” when they are just opening a can and serving it…and the “i don’t have time excuse” gime me a break…these are the same women that would go out for “girl time” for hours but they don’t have time to prepare a wholesome , healthy and delicious loving food like martha would…

  48. Jane says:

Martha is an old Cow!! Team Rachael all the way!!!

  49. Jem says:

IMHO – Martha is a diva with an anal personality. She is also an extremely talented & intelligent business woman who took HomeEc classes to a whole new level. She is consistently condescending with her guests, her attempts at “hip” are mostly comical – but she is who she is and shouldn’t be faulted for that. Rachael is the “girl next door” who everyone loves. It doesn’t surprise me at all that it was she who took the “high road”, class always tells.

  50. Lynn says:

Rachel is a real person, who shows that even me a novice cooker can make something good to eat. Martha makes me not want to walk into a kitchen because I will fail. Martha blows!!! Go RACHEL!!!!

  51. Kathy in Denver says:

Martha really should keep negative opinions to herself. She may be great at many things, but she needs to come down off her pedestal. Her snooty personality reminds me of the role that Meryl Streep played in the movie The Devil Wears Prada.

I am a huge fan of Rachael Ray and feel she handled the situation correctly. She makes quick easy meals that anyone can cook and it doesn’t take all day to do it. Her personality is highly entertaining and her morning show is about more than just cooking. Rachael is genuine and doesn’t try to be a Jane of all trades like Martha.

    Team Rachael Forever!!!

  52. Kayslou says:

I love watching Rachel Ray’s cooking shows when we get where there is a tv. She is refreshing and fun to watch. I have learned many things from her. I appreciate that she does not put on airs that she is something she is not.
She is real and we enjoy her. I do not watch tv at home so don’t know all her shows. Hate the filth that is on the web and news on the computer about anyone of these people and all people. Very disgusting to think people are so rude, and cruel. With that they should now even be allowed on tv anymore for such filth. Won’t watch their shows when we are traveling.

  53. Sue Simmons says:

It’s a shame America has to be so money greedy. If American’s healthier eating were the real issue, why the money dispute? It’s only about money–what a shame.

  54. Sue Simmons says:

I think it’s an absolute shame how Americans only seem to worry about money. Many countries are turning against so-called Americans because they appear to only be concerned about THEIR POCKETS.

    Martha’s imprisonment–only about money
Rachel Ray & Martha’s not the best quality items at premium prices–only about money
Paula Deen grew up street poor (if you can believe the media) & of course is only concerned about money

I’m telling you, it’s a sad, sad world for Americans.

  55. gina says:

    W
How are boobs as small as Rachael so saggy?
