George Clooney’s hypocritical dating advice for women

fp_3827164_barm_up_in_the_air_prem_101809

George Clooney’s last girlfriend, Sarah Larson, was 18 years his junior. His current girlfriend, Elisabetta Canalis, is 17 years younger than he is. Given that, you’d think George would keep his mouth shut when it comes to May/December romances. And since he announced he’d never marry (again) while he was dating Sarah Larson, you’d think he’d keep his mouth shut when it comes to doling out dating advice. You’d think. But you’d be wrong. George handing out all kinds of advice – and rules – to his “Up in the Air” co-star, 24-year-old Anna Kendrick, including the fact that she can’t date someone as old as him.

Ladies’ man George Clooney isn’t short on romance pointers – even if they’re for a younger, female costar.

“He had rules for me about dating and stuff. It was really sweet,” Anna Kendrick said at Saturday’s press day for their new comedy/drama Up in the Air, out Dec. 4. “It’s funny, actually. A friend of his that was his age [48] was dating somebody younger than me. He thought that was fine. I was like, ‘What would you say to me if I were dating somebody your age?’ He said, ‘Oh no, absolutely not.’ ”

The 24-year-old admits, “He had this kind of older brother thing with me.” And, her character, who has argumentative romantic tension with Clooney in the film, jokes, “Is he too old for me? Yes. George Clooney is too old for me.”

[From People]

Yes, yes, I know it’s supposed to be adorable. And it is, because George is adorable and it’s cute that he’s sort of paternal with his co-star. But you’d have a hard time convincing me that Clooney wouldn’t jump into bed with her in a second if the opportunity presented itself. And it is just fine for Clooney’s 48-year-old friend to date a girl younger than 24, but not alright for his 24-year-old co-star to date a man who’s 48. That’s rather logically inconsistent.

To George’s credit, he was married to actress Talia Balsam for four years, and she was actually two years older than he. For whatever reason, that seemed to leave a permanent bad taste in his mouth towards women his own age.

  1. Maybe he meant “you can’t date a man double your age, unless its me”.

Whatever. Not a Clooney fan, and I have tried.

  2. Smart sophisticated mature women George Clooney’s age know better then to date a manwhore like him. Lets be honest, if it was not for him being rich and famous, Clooney would not even be looked twice by these young pretty girls.

  3. Better he be paternal than hitting on her.

For some reason this calls to mind Cary Grant’s objection to “Charade”: that the audience would never buy a man of his age (59) with Audrey Hepburn (34). Meanwhile, Grant was involved with (and only a couple of years away from marrying) Dyan Cannon (26).

  4. Just ain’t buyin’ his act.

Rock Hudson was married, too. Means nothing.

Clooney’s in-you-face, over-the-top, uber suave ladies’ man pose just doesn’t ring true.

    Bill Hicks is God:

The more I read about him, the more of a dingus I think he is. Great suit tho’

  6. True, Enony. But I think his comments are more insulting to the women he’s dated or are dating. His comments come off as saying they are fine to “date” but not to be serious about. Seems like he’s saying to Anna that she is too classy to go the route his dates goes. ;-)

  7. Used to love me some Clooney. Now he just comes off like a younger version of Hugh Hefner. And yes Wow, that’s exactly what he was saying to her. The dude’s a first class douche.

I know, he’s hot so women don’t care that he’s a douche. Well, then they shouldn’t care if John Mayer is a douche either. Or Jude Law.

  8. Maybe I’m missing something but I don’t get why so many women think he’s a great catch but I think he’s a huge sleaze.

  9. George Clooney has a fine collection of beards. He is the 21st century equivalent of Rock Hudson.

  10. Agreed that he does have a bit of the Rock Hudson to him. Hmmmm. How is it possible that I find him attractive, witty, and gross at the same time?

  11. If you consider someone to be “December” at age 48 you have more problems with reality than George does.

I’m not sure why that’s to his credit. Besides, Talia Balsam has been married to John Slattery, also two years younger, since 1998.

  13. I agree with Enonymous.

In fact, my dating advice would be: Don’t judge a book by its cover - if you’re looking for marriage, this is not the one.

    Puleez.

  14. These men and their usual string of hypocrisies. They will stick anything that moves, yet when it comes to someone they know they suddenly have a crisis of conscience. I suppose I should be glad that at least some of them have one. Reminds me of John Mayer. Maybe it’s not the fathers inflicitng so much damage onto these apparently hysterical women that you date. Maybe it’s just you, but I digress.

  15. What Clooney is really saying to her is “Don’t let some 48 year old gay guy use you as a pretend girlfriend in order to prop up his fading movie star image.”

    Good advice.

  16. I’m not really a fan either and I totally agree with you he’d bang her as soon as the opportunity arose. Ick.

  17. George Clooney looks GREAT for his age. He seems to be aging quite well and regardless of what his actual sexual orientation may be, he seems to be quite happy. Kudos to his fashion stylist! His attire simply rocks! He can certainly give much younger men a “run for their money”.

  18. He’s got a nice smile, but I never really understood his appeal. I agree with an earlier comment: His advice did sorta knock his current and previous arm candy.

  20. I must admit that I have suddenly grown quite bored with George’s aging playboy routine. Actually, it’s rather pathetic. He always dates some d-lister wanna-be so he can call the shots in the relationship. He’ll dump the current piece after next year’s Oscar ceremony. Count on it.

  24. Long long ago when he was on ER I really liked him/his character.

Now I just wish he’d go away, and maybe take Madonna, Julia Roberts, Britney, anyone overexposed, to some far off place and stay there.
