UK reality contestants charged w/ animal cruelty for cooking a rat (video)

Two contestants on the UK reality show “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here,” have been charged with animal cruelty in Australia after killing and cooking up a rat. Their group was only given rice and beans to eat and celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo decided to take matters into his own hands by catching and killing a rat to add to their meager meal. D’Acampo, the winner of the show, and his co-conspirator, actor Stuart Manning, must report to court on animal cruelty charges in New South Wales, Australia, in February of next year. D’Acampo and Manning are said to have received permission from producers to kill the rat, and some of their fellow contestants are asking why producers aren’t being held responsible:

The pair were part of a group in ”exile” for part of the series, which meant meagre rations of rice and beans, so they caught, killed and cooked a rat to give them “more protein”.

D’Acampo, 33, a chef, said in the show’s video diary room the Bush Telegraph: ”I saw one of these rats running around. I got a knife, I got its throat, I picked it up.”

The group, including Manning, 30, the former Hollyoaks actor, ate the rat and enjoyed the meal.

Ch Insp David O’Shannessy from the RSPCA in New South Wales, said it was not acceptable that an animal had been killed as part of a performance.

He said: ”The allegation is that an animal was cruelly treated on the set. It was a rat that was killed. There is a code of conduct in New South Wales that dictates how animals can be used. The killing of a rat for a performance is not acceptable.”

The charity sends staff whenever animals are used for filmed or live performances, he said, and so had been in contact with the programme’s producers before the rat was killed.

When they were told what had happened, they decided to take action.

A spokesman for New South Wales said: ”Police from Murwillumbah yesterday issued field court attendance notices to two men aged 30 and 33 for the offence of animal cruelty. They are due to attend court at Murwillumbah local court on February 3, 2009.”

I understand that they’re supposed to get permission to work with animals on TV, but shouldn’t they just be issued a citation and be done with it? They killed an animal that a lot of people consider a pest. Rats are smart little creatures and I have a friend who keeps one as a pet, but as a meat eater I don’t feel too sorry for a wild rat being killed for food. Maybe the Australian government is trying to send a message to the film industry that they need to adhere to animal cruelty regulations.

D’ACampo is defiant in his response to allegations of animal cruelty. He says the meal was “the best recipe I ever did” and that he doesn’t “regret one single thing I did in the jungle to feed my camp mates.” His fellow contestants seemed to agree as they ate up the meal, exclaiming how good it was. They were starving, though, so he could have fed them crackers with cheese and they would have sung his praises.

Broadcaster ITV has apologized for the incident and says they’ll make sure something similar doesn’t happen again.

I scrolled through a bunch of YouTube videos looking for this rat-eating incident, which is below. I initially thought it was in a show that aired a day earlier and wasted a ton of time trying to watch this crap. I can’t stomach people fighting, eating bugs, and sitting around talking about nothing for hours (in that order) so this was rather unpleasant for me. How this passes for entertainment is beyond me.

Rat discussion starts at 7:00 minutes into the video below.

Rat eating continues at the beginning of this video until about 1:00 in.

    you’re kidding right!?!?!?

    stupid

  3. Jazz says:

Celebrities?? I have never heard of any of them! That rat probably had more talent than all of them put together.

  4. Len says:

I always find these kind of allegations so hypocritical. We kill millions of cows, pigs and chickens every day.

  5. Beth says:

I don’t understand how this is cruelty considering they killed for food. It would be one thing if it was for sport and did things to the rat inhumanely.

These celebrity shows, no matter what country they are in, are just hasbeens and d/f-listers.

  6. Trillion says:

Jazz: too funny! What about all the cruelty to humans that rats inflict?

  7. Annabelle says:

This angers me. Don’t give me bs about doing it to feed anyone- they had food. They did it for ratings, & it’s sick.

  8. Oi says:

I’m surprised they ate it! I wouldn’t. And yes, the charges are stupid. I have absolutely no respect for animal activities, and I have experience with them. PETA kills more perfectly adoptable animals than any other organization in the world and they had the nerve to send me a letter of condemnation and threaten me with legal action because I shot and killed a rabid coyote that was on my property. They said I should have called a vet to see if the coyote was really rabid, and if so then have a vet put itdown painlessly. good luck with that you morons! You first! And my 22 gauge was perfectly painless. One shot to the head and he died.

  9. Firestarter says:

The guy on the left looks like a thin Griffin O’Neal.

  10. Jeane says:

That’s ridiculous. Thousands of rats are killed every day because they are a pest and plague cities.
It’s not like they were torturing the rat. They killed an animal and ate it. Big deal.

  11. crash2GO2 says:

If they killed it humanely, I don’t see what the problem is.

  12. princess pea says:

Hilarious… next they should charge each contestant who is seen smacking a mosquito onscreen. How dare they kill those innocent bugs? ANIMAL CRUELTY!

  13. Miss Thang says:

I’m surprised PETA doesn’t think owning a pet is animal crelty. Or maybe they do…
I know they think killing animals for food is cruel, so I’m not surprised they didn’t like it happening on tv.
I find this kind of thing really annoying.

  14. El Predicto says:

Wait….wasn’t this a Quick Fire Challenge on Top Chef this year?

    Rat a Touille

  15. WTF?!? says:

    LOL, Oi.

  16. rose says:

i can’t believe any one cares, people set out poison and rat traps all the time. at least they used it for food.

  17. Vibius says:

Stupid law = stupid waste of tax payer money. What about survivor? They eat fish all the time. That wild boar from season 2? Does this apply to just UK based shows or all shows that air in the UK?

  18. Amy says:

To all who don’t know them:
Gino and Stuart are British celebs which is why they were on a British celeb show.

  19. Sudini says:

I’m glad these a**hole famewhore losers are being charged. I see this on other shows, where they’ll do disgusting things in the name of ratings (ie. with bugs, spiders, etc.). And it’s always at the expense of the poor creatures. I don’t care that some people will say “oh it’s just a rat/insect/etc.”. NO creature should be made to suffer in the name of “entertainment”.
There are too many soulless, self-absorbed, small-minded people out there who can find a way to justify this type of thing by deeming certain animals disposable. I hope they come back as said “disposable” animal and run into someone just like them.

  20. JaNa'e says:

they killed it for food and sustenance, they same way we do cows, chickens, turkeys, ducks, and every damn thing else we eat. these people are over reacting.

the people on survivor eat whatever they can manage to catch, i don’t see them coming under fire. not to mention the fact that food network cooks these kind of animals up all the time for strange food challenges.

  21. Emily says:

I think the problem is not that they killed and ate the rat, but that they did it on TV.

”The allegation is that an animal was cruelly treated on the set. It was a rat that was killed. There is a code of conduct in New South Wales that dictates how animals can be used. The killing of a rat for a performance is not acceptable.”

  22. cee says:

of course it is cruel to kill an animal!
of course it is murder. when you end a life it is murder. and for me it is indeed a crime to kill an animal. no matter what animal. animals have feelings like humans. and just because you think you are a more developed being on this planet doesn’t mean you have more worth.

i am glad some people stand up for animal rights. because most of you just care about their own lifes.

i have nothing against people who eat meat but i wish people would kill just as much as they need. there are plenty of animals dying for nothing! the food is wasted because nobody buys that much! i hate it. and most of you think it’s okay because you grew up with circumstances like that.

    it’s just so wrong.

  23. Yae says:

If rats & bugs were an accepted food source, no one would starve anywhere (let that sink in for a moment).

Well, except maybe Alaska. Anyone know if there are rats in Alaska?

  24. Julia says:

Oi, your story just goes to show how little some of these animal rights people really know about animals. Do you know what happens when a vet suspects an animal is rabid? It is euthanized. Know why? Because the only tests you can do to determine rabies status involves cutting the head off of the animal and submitting it for dissection. So, not quite sure what they thought a vet would do besides shoot it with a tranq gun and then stick euthasol into its heart.

  25. Julia says:

And Cee, they killed a single rat to feed several people. I am pretty sure they didn’t kill more than they needed.

  26. Emily says:

@cee, they were starving on a diet of rice and beans. I don’t really think one rat between a group of people is killing more than they’ll use, do you?

@Julia, ITA with your second post. Not too sure about your first one though, but I’m too lazy to look that up right now.

  27. ViktoryGin says:

This issue is not at black and white as “we kill chickens and cow for food, why should this be any different?”

This issue that many aninmal activists have with the use of animals for food (provided that they are the kinds to make moral concessions) is the inhumane way in which they are harvested (I use this word intentionally) and kiiled. Often the animals are reared in closed-confined quarters wherein they have to endure their own feces, they’re fed genetically altered foods, pumped full of hormones, and eventually hacked or electrocuted to death. I’m not here to preach, but there is a difference between this and catching a wild animal yourself for sustenance. The latter is survival, the former is the modern meat industry.

This bothers me less because, honestly, rats are bottomfeeders who are probably still going to be around after humans have gone; and it’s not like rats are in danger of over- consumption. Though I’m am a sporadic veg, I’m also practical and I recognize that meat will be eaten. Better this than a cancer-striken chicken in a cage.

  28. Jazz says:

How about they kill and eat each other for food?! That would make me watch this train wreck of a show!

  29. Sudini says:

@Cee – thank you for your post. Very sensitive and right on.

Again, most people try to justify this for whatever soulless reason, but the fact remains that the only reason this animal died was because some no talent a**holes just had to have their 15 minutes of fame.

And LOL at Jazz – I think you’re onto something there 😉

  30. cee says:

thank you sudini. and you are right they just had to have their 15 minutes of fame.

    @emily, you wrote:
“they were starving on a diet of rice and beans. I don’t really think one rat between a group of people is killing more than they’ll use, do you?”

i really don’t think they would let someone starve to death on a tv show. i mean there are doctors involved when they produce this kind of show. so i don’t think your comment is correct.

it was not necessary. even it’s for many of you “just a rat” it is still a living being on this planet.

we have so many human beings on the planet and when you hear about some tragedy in the news that occured to one person you are sorry for the person. you don’t think: oh…that’s fine. we have enough human beings. don’t care about this one.

it’s alway sad when we hear bad news.

but i bet you read my comment and think: you can’t compare human beings to animals.

again (in my opinion): our life is not more worth than the life of any other beings and i don’t compare humans with animals. i compare a living crature with another one.

(sorry…english is not my mother language)

i think the world would be a much better place when we stop thinking human beings have more rights on this planet.

  31. Jon says:

What!!!!! does a rat have a personality? can it provide any form of help to todays society? can it read a book or write its name? can it serve me a cool beer? can it cook me a steak? i think the answer would be no to all these!! why do people waste time and money prosecuting celebs for killing a rat when there are people out there breaking serious laws! What a complete waste of time. i hate timewasters, i work hard for a living, these people should get a proper job instead of timewasting!
I might go fishing tomorrow…..better not use worms, i might get into trouble! i’ll use maggots…..oh….sorry. Got it i’ll use cheese……oh…..cheese comes from milk that comes from cows, better not. i think i’ll just stay in and waste some time!!!!!!

Of course human beings have more rights, we are the dominant species, if the dinosaurs come back i’ll serve myself to them on a giant platter, or maybe they’ll be kind and not eat me!!!

    Grow up@!

  32. Sudini says:

Jon, you come across as nothing more than a complete douche (around whom the world must revolve) who thinks he’s got it all figured out but who couldn’t be more small-minded, unevolved and unenlightened if you tried.

Go crawl back to your cave and beat your chest from there. I’m so not interested.

  33. Jon says:

douche, isn’t that a shower? You sound like a complete muppet, why do you care if a rat is eaten, better the rat than me!!!
The world doesn’t revolve round me it revolves round the sun, dont you know high school science?
Go and get a real job
    Stop wasting my time!!!

  34. Emily says:

@Jon a douche is a form of vaginal cleanser. I think it might be French for shower or bath, but when it’s used as an insult, think vagina cleaning.

@cee: I never said they were starving to death, I said they were starving. There’s a big difference, so don’t tell me I’m saying something I’m not.

You wrote: “but i bet you read my comment and think: you can’t compare human beings to animals.

again (in my opinion): our life is not more worth than the life of any other beings and i don’t compare humans with animals. i compare a living crature with another one.”

I don’t think our lives are worth any more than any other creature. I do, however, believe in survival of the fittest. Go watch the Lion King and learn about the circle of life.

  35. cee says:

    @emily:
the “but i bet you read comment” was not towards you. i was generally speaking. sorry my english is not very good.

yeah, they were starving but-they would never let someone starve to death on tv so i don’t understand your point. when i take part on a tv show like that i know that i will be very hungry sometimes but i know there are better ways to get food instead of killing an animal.

generally speaking: when you would be a contestand on a tv-show like that wouldn’t you educate yourself what you can eat in the nature? i mean people in our society are not used eating rats. i think when i were one of these guys and i would eat meat and don’t care about animals-i think i prefer to search for food in the nature instead of eating a rat.

the circle of life is not up to date for human beings. think about the masses of food we have. it was not necessary to kill that rat. it was for entertainment. a silly tv show. that’s sad.

    @jon:
rats are very intelligent animals. they have personality and they can learn. rats among themselves are very social animals.

your examples were very lame. you don’t have to be very intelligent for serving beer & cooking steaks. but anyway… your intention was to write a mean comment. congrats. a rat can’t read of course and it can’t do the most of the things you do BUT rats don’t harm the planet like each human being does. so i have to ask: what do you prefer? human beings that destroy their own living space or rats that are simpler but don’t harm our environment like we do.

i don’t think it’s very circle of life-ish when a creature destroys it’s own habitat.

but anyway … i have to ask- what’s the appeal of fishing, jon?
i don’t get the appeal of fishing. i mean … standing there … waiting … maybe a fish bites … a) you throw the fish back into the water or b) you put it in a box and eat it later.
we all know how healthy fishes in the very very clean waters are … i’m sure it does your body good … i mean this VERY ironic.

  36. Jon says:

    Sorry professor!
All this over a rat, what have i started? I formally appologise for any offence caused.

    Yeah right. Timewasters!!!!!
You have to be intelligent to cook steak correctly!
Rats are vermin and spread disease, they are responsible for more deaths than people who drop a little litter!
    ever heard of the plague?

    Timewasters

  37. cee says:

    humans spread disease too
