Avatar reportedly awesome, is supposed to live up to the hype

The advance reviews are in for James’ Cameron’s much-anticipated massive budget film Avatar and it’s said to be amazing. The film cost a whopping $400 million to make, and there were worries that it could be a big turkey this Christmas season. Instead it’s poised to dominate the box office and to be a critic as well as a crowd pleaser. I’m really excited for this film after seeing the breathtaking trailer and hearing how good it is:

The 3D epic adventure by the director of 1997 blockbuster “Titanic” is one of the most expensive films ever at a cost of about $400 million to make and market. It begins its worldwide launch next week, hitting U.S. theaters on December 18.

If initial reviews and Twitter buzz are any indication, it may be money well spent for film studio 20th Century Fox.

“James Cameron has proven his point: He is king of the world,” raved showbiz newspaper The Hollywood Reporter.

“As commander-in-chief of an army of visual-effects technicians, creature designers, motion-capture mavens, stunt performers, dancers, actors and music and sound magicians, he brings science-fiction movies into the 21st century with the jaw-dropping wonder that is ‘Avatar,'” it said.

Britain’s biggest-selling tabloid, The Sun, called it “the most dazzling film of the decade. … The final battle scene is 20 minutes long and absolutely mind-blowing.”

“Avatar” shows the forest-dwelling Na’vi fighting for survival against a colonial mining operation bent on stripping their planet. A crippled ex-Marine is chosen to make contact with the mysterious people as a remotely controlled avatar.

Empire magazine gave the movie five stars out of five, calling it a “hugely rewarding experience” whose new technology “will give directors … one heck of a sandbox to play in.”

Twitter lit up with comments from journalists leaving the tightly guarded premiere. “James Cameron is a freakin’ genius! I can’t say much but wow, I loved it,” wrote Alex Billington of the movie website FirstShowing.net.

The London Guardian’s Mark Brown wrote on Thursday that “Avatar” was “really much, much better than expected, (it) looked amazing and the story was gripping — if cheesy in many places.”

“The terrible film that some had been anticipating had not materialized. It was good,” Brown wrote.

Avatar also has a very high aggregate critics rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes meaning it’s not just getting mixed reviews and that most critics love it. The “cheesy” sentiment runs through some of the criticism, but it seems to be minor. Some are saying it’s too long, and at two and a half hours that seems inevitable. Overall people are saying it’s just beautiful and unlike any other computer-generated imagery we’ve ever seen before. I’ll definitely be seeing this next week. Avatar is out around the world next Thursday.

I was not expecting this at all. I had been writing this film off as crap from the start but now I want to see it… Da**it James Cameron.

  2. Samantha says:

When I saw that it was military-ish, my first thought was “I bet Michelle Rodriguez is in it”, and then BAM! There she was. Aside from that, it looks really good, I want to see it.

  3. barneslr says:

I agree with ,,,,! I didn’t think I was the least bit interested in this movie, but I am rethinking that. It really does look like it’ll be great.

  4. Firestarter says:

My dad is so excited about Avatar! I am actually going to go and see it with him. Something I never do, go to the movies.
    It looks great!

  5. Praise St. Angie! says:

every time I watch the trailer, I can’t get past how “cartoon-y” the creatures look.

I’ll probably see it anyway…ditto to ,,,, on “Damn that James Cameron!” 🙂

  6. hatsumomo says:

Yeah, what Praise st angle said.

This is something my man will have to drag me to go see. I just really don’t think I’ll like it until I’m actually in the theater. And slightly intoxicated.

  7. SolitaryAngel says:

I’ve been looking forward to this movie…now that the critics like it–my son and I are THERE, baby! What’s wrong with military movies? Love em!

  8. Green Is Good says:

400 million?! Eh, he can afford it.

  9. Sumodo says:

Next Friday night, my boyfriend and I will be there. We’ll buy advance tickets tonight. I was expecting to hate it, but it looks like they were serious. DId any of you think it could have ended up as a kiddie flick? I did.

  10. Bel says:

I’m not really a fan of James Cameron and i’ve never seen Titanic, but the geek inside me wants to paint my face blue and go watch the movie in 3D.
I blame Youtube and his effin’ HD trailers

  11. Megan says:

I agree that seeing Michelle Rodriguez in the same role over and over as the hard nosed sexy chick with swagger is getting a bit old, she really is getting type cast way too often.

The movie itself though looks incredible and I cannot WAIT to see it!!

  12. ruru says:

    I’m still not buying it.

  13. Essie says:

When are people going to stop doubting James Cameron? I remember the talk about “Titanic” and it grossed over $1B. “Avatar” will earn way more than that. I can’t wait to see it!!

  14. wren says:

Is it just because I am Australian that I think Sam Worthington’s american accent is horrible and I can hear Aussie in everything he says???

PS I still love him, just don’t think he can pull off the accent…

  15. WTF?!? says:

The reviews say the effects are stunning, the story is shite. $12+ is too much to pay for ads and another crappy movie. The previews look ridiculous, a big budget cartoon with computer-generated images. If I want to watch a video game, I’ll play one. Actors in make-up is more artistic.
Cameron is a giant douche, anyway.
