Brittany Murphy dies at age 32

Across The Hall Premiere in Beverly Hills

TMZ is breaking news that Brittany Murphy is dead. According to their sources, she went into full cardiac arrest this morning at the home she shared with her husband. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Cedars-Sinai. Ordinarily, I would wait until someone confirmed this stuff, but TMZ is reporting and now most media outlets are picking it up – Radar just confirmed, and they’re reporting that the LA County coroner is launching an investigation into cause of death. This is a lot like Michael Jackson’s death, where TMZ broke it and everyone picked it up. I think it’s another replay, and I think this is for real. Brittany was 32 years old.

Brittany Murphy died early this morning after she went into full cardiac arrest and could not be revived, multiple sources tell TMZ.

She was 32.

A 911 call was made at 8:00 AM from a home in Los Angeles that is listed as belonging to her husband, Simon Monjack, the Los Angeles City Fire Department tells TMZ.

We’re told Murphy was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Murphy starred in such films as “Clueless,” “8 Mile,” and “Don’t Say a Word.”

Story developing …

[From TMZ]

I loved Brittany in Clueless, that was probably my favorite of hers. She had my favorite line in the film – when Cher tells her that she’s got something no other girl in their school has, Brittany says “Oh, no, I’m not a virgin.” She was also really good in Girl, Interrupted as the girl that commits suicide when Lisa and Suzanne run away from the institution. Brittany was very talented, although she wasn’t getting many high-quality jobs lately.

I don’t mean to be morbid, but with cardiac arrest in someone so young, I am thinking drugs. Not necessarily cocaine or anything, it could be prescription medication that got mixed up, much like Heath Ledger’s death. Or it could just be some kind of fluke. In any case, this is extremely sad news. My thoughts and prayers are with her husband and her family.

UPDATE: TMZ’s sources are saying that “Brittany Murphy’s mom discovered her unconscious in the shower. We’re told when paramedics arrived, they quickly determined Murphy was in full cardiac arrest and immediately administered CPR. They continued CPR in route to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center — several miles away — and Murphy was unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.” People Magazine is also running with the story, so I’m pretty sure this is happening. People also has more details about Brittany’s personal life, her two broken engagements (to Joe Macaluso in August 2006 and Jeff Kwatinetz, CEO of the Hollywood talent agency The Firm, in 2004), as well as details about her relationship with Ashton Kutcher.

UPDATE #2: Brittany‘s family has confirmed her death and released this statement to the media: “In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is their wish that you respect their privacy.” Brittany’s ex Ashton Kutcher also released a statement on Twitter, writing, “2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon. see you on the other side kid.”

  1. pixiegirl says:

She was often looking painfully thin and seemed ‘out of it’ as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if drugs were involved. 🙁

  2. Cassie says:

She suffered from an eating disorder for years. I guaranteed it was a mix of that and drugs. Her husband had a medical issue on a plane about a week ago, and she didn’t want to be checked out by the hospital…hmmmm suspicious. Either way, it’s rare for someone so young to die of a heart attack unless it was caused

  3. MonicaBee says:

My first thought, too, was some type of drug overdose.

Regardless, it’s sad news. She was a cute girl and a good actress. :'(

  4. faye says:

I loved her as Luanne on King of the Hill.

  5. Alecto says:

2009 year of death strikes again. and i’m going with anerexia/drug use

  6. Danielle says:

Chronic bulimia and anorexia without drug use can cause cardiac failure.

  7. Kevin says:

Man, that’s terrible. I always liked her. She was good in that movie where she was the spoiled little rich girl turned broke ass nanny. Really sad to hear it. WOW, by the way Kaiser, your always on duty!

  8. Minxx says:

Oh, this is sad! I also think it was a mix of drugs and maybe anorexia.. she looked painfully thin.

  9. ! says:

Entertainment Lawyer has been writing blind items about her meth addiction for a little while now.

  10. RAMONA says:

Does anyone notice that you can clearly see her skeleton through her skin…also the dark circles under her eyes in her photos and in her latest movies are way apparent that something is wrong with this beautiful young lady…..So talented.
What a waste…This should serve as a wake up call to those out there with disorders or drug abusers….If this turns out to be the case.

  11. Djw says:

My heartfelt prayers go out to her family.

  12. Popcorny says:

So sad, such a bubbly person.

  13. fizXgirl314 says:

Oh wow, this is really sad… she was so cute in clueless… I wonder if she died from malnutrition or something… I often was amazed at how much weight she had lost… very very sad 🙁

  14. d says:

Ah, those big brown eyes…they slay me everytime. Very sad. Always felt she was so vulnerable and for quite a while, in trouble. But what can you do? RIP, kiddo, you deserved a better life. I hope her spirit and soul is now somewhere where it’s warm and sunny and safe.

Re pupils: shrinking from all the flash bulbs going off in her face?

  15. Lardy Chops says:

Also in the top photo, where have her pupils disappeared to?

  16. QB says:

    This is so sad.

Its kind of shocking to see how much weight she lost and all the bad surgery she got done.

  17. Jag says:

Even recovering anorexics can die of cardiac arrest; think Karen Carpenter. RIP both of them.

  18. Ggirl says:

This news is so sad but not unexpected. My heart goes out to her family. I also liked her performance in Girl Interrupted. A loss is still a loss no matter what the circumstances.

  19. Popcorny says:

Yeah, her husband needed medical intervention a short time ago.
If I remember correct he used to look different a short time ago. Lately he’s grown large and looked sweaty and pasty. She, on the other hand, went gaunt.
Could it be possible that both were trying to lose weight and used substances (amphetamine types), under the counter, that led to both situations?
I recall in the 90’s a lot of anorexics passing this way -got skinny, had heart attacks and passed.
I’m just not feeling the meth … he gained weight and she didn’t have that fallen apart look, just skinny as heck.
Who knows. Just can’t get her out of my head right now.
    :*^(

  20. Sky says:

    That’s so sad.
    RIP beautiful lady .

  21. Truthful says:

    RIP, I loved her work..

I knew she was stuggling w/personal addictions/eating disorders..

    32 is soooo young.

didn’t she date Ashton before Demi got her claws in him???

  22. valerie says:

geez….this year is crazy w/ all these people dying..

  23. Emily says:

Wow, this has been a depressing year. RIP Brittany.

  24. Goosie says:

Well, the Oscars will make me cry this year, that’s for sure.

RIP, Brittany. I always had a huge soft spot for you….I hope wherever you are, you are happier.

  25. WTF?!? says:

Put me on the eating disorder thought list. Bulimia puts enormous stress on the heart, and anorexia causes the body to begin eating its own muscle to survive after a point.
I wouldn’t be surprised if coke was involved, but that last caffeine jolt to an already-damaged heart can do it, too. And as someone else mentioned, a bad reaction to plastic surgery could’ve cause cardiac arrest as well.
So incredibly sad. I loved her in Girl, Interrupted.

  26. Viper says:

People are stupid if they think cardiac arrest is a cause of death. WHEN A PERSON DIES THEIR HEART STOPS. I was over at IMDB when I read ‘ Brittnay Murphy dies of cardiac arrest’ you dont die of cardiac arrest YOU’RE ALREADY DEAD. Your heart stops thats what happens when you die, its whatever stoped your heart that killed you. There is no such think as cardiac arrest being the CAUSE of death. ITS DEATH Whatever was in her system killed her and by the time medics arrived she was long gone. She never had a chanc

  27. Ophelia says:

God that sucks. This year is awful. On the boards at Dlisted, they’re saying Ashton Kutcher (her ex, maybe fiancé?) tweeted, “I’m taking a crap and Brittany Murphy is dead.” He’s such an ass.
RIP. She was a pretty damn good actress. She was amazing in Girl, Interrupted.
**edit** So I also read on the boards that she said she knew the shady husband since she was 17 or so. Her wiki says her dad was a convicted mobster. Maybe that’s how they got involved, like her dad knew him.

  28. Zarah says:

Very very sad. She seemed sweet. Hollywood really does chew them up and spit them out doesn’t it? 🙁

  29. lrm says:

I am not normally a big over the top fan of any actors—though i love a few people’s work…
For SOME reason,Brittany Murphy was one of them…I just loved her, like I love (have always loved) RDJ,and hoped she too would get her life back on track, just as he has been able to.

It’s strange how sad I am;I just always thought she had remarkable talent and was amazing to watch on screen….and hoped she’d get back in the game at some point.

sigh. Regardless of the cause,I appreciate people’s contributions through their art, when it’s real, and for that I am sad. And sad for her family.
Esp. a week before the holidays. extra harsh.

  30. Linda says:

These girls should be helped before they die — or at least be informed. Ahem, Nicole Ritchie and a few others.

  31. Jocelina says:

Does it really matter how/why she died? Regardless of the cause of her death, she’s gone, and my heart goes out to her loved ones. It’s heartbreaking to lose a friend/relative at any age, and it can be especially difficult when the loss is sudden and unexpected, as is usually the case when a young person passes away.

  32. MsTriste says:

Am I the only one who instantly thought her husband might have something to do with this? He seems so slimy.

  33. Linda says:

Yes, I thought of the husband as implicated also. He had a facilitator look on his face if not a downright smirk. No prayers for him, sorry.

  34. lrm says:

oh yea,and she has the same birthday as me (different year, same day…) ): ):

  35. CB Rawks says:

I am so sad about this. Unfortunate movie title here, but I have to say I loved her in Drop Dead Gorgeous, she was absolutely adorable. That’s the movie about the smalltown beauty pageant, and I beseech everyone to watch it.

She was definitely too thin to be healthy. It’s so upsetting that people with eating disorders can’t see themselves accurately, and therefore can’t protect their health.
    RIP Brittany.

  36. Sam says:

My guess based on her appearance is heart arrhythmia due to electrolyte imbalance due to an eating disorder.

  37. Viper says:

It could have been a number of factors, her eating disorder being one of them.

  38. Carena says:

She has been way too skinny for way too long. Her heart probably couldn’t take it anymore. And I wouldn’t doubt if she were using drugs. Whenever she was doing an interview she seemed a little off.

  39. sayrah says:

My favorite role of hers was as Luanne on King of the Hill. She made me laugh out loud every episode. It’s sad, but I think she’s looked sick for years. Perez Hilton is reporting that he knows what happened and it was from drug use. So sad.

  40. WTF?!? says:

    Yes, Jocelina, it does matter.

  41. Wow…poor kid..:-(..was very sad to read this. She was a talented actress and I’m not going to lie, I thought Lohan would make the death pool in 2009. I hope she takes notice of this and gets help before it’s too late.

  42. lucy2 says:

How very sad – she was young and at one point had a very promising career. She was a good actress and singer, if I recall. I feel for her family.
It seems like in recent years her troubles kept piling up though – too thin, bad relationships, and a lot rumors about drug use. I think I also heard recently that she was just fired from a movie for being a problem there or something. Sounds like a life that spiraled out of control.
You always hope that if nothing else, some of these other Hollywood girls might see this as a warning sign and slow down, but they never do.

  43. Aspie says:

    So sad…RIP…

  44. You Go Girl says:

been reading for years now about her problem with heroin….un-insurable, the big productions won’t go anywhere near her, due to her erratic behaviour etc..

  45. lurker says:

My first thought was her husband too, but it did seem like she could have had an eating disorder. Luckily they will be doing an autopsy despite her husband’s wishes.

  46. RaeJillian says:

i thought drugs and then remembered a friends wife died when we were all in our early twenties – eating disorder. 🙁 it is a sad thing…
    i loved her!

  47. Gigohead says:

OH MY GOD! MY LUANNE! I loved her silly voice on King of the Hill. I happen to like her a lot I’m so sorry to hear about her passing. She did look like she was struggling there with her weight. She was too gaunt and frighteningly too skinny.
It seems to me it may have been a combination of the weight and perhaps she may have been on Ambien. My coworker is at a wake this weekend, again for a death of a 32 year old young man who died taking Ambien with perhaps a few drinks.

    How tragic!

  48. Eileen Yover says:

Alecto: Took the words right out of my mouth-eating disorder and drugs. Her little body just pooped out I bet.
    RIP Brittany!

  49. Enn says:

@WTF?!? – why does it matter? I think it’s a shame that everyone here is stating so definitively how she died. Were y’all in her inner circle? Also, Viper, are you a doctor?

  50. BitterBetty says:

I knew she had problems but I did not expect this… shocking and horrible =(

  51. Ron says:

The first comment:”another druggie no remorse” is truly heartless. Having put a family member through rehab and dealt with the effects of drugs first hand, I find you to be quite disgusting.
Regardless of the circumstances, she was a human being and obviously flawed. And more than likely appeared in something you watched an enjoyed. I am deeply sorry for her families loss especially at the holidays.

  52. BitterBetty says:

And sending your condolences via Twitter=fail.

  53. wow says:

This one hurts too. I’ve been a fan of her work.

Just sad. For her family to lose her in general is bad, but for it to happen around this time is even more dreadful.

    R.I.P. Brittany.

    “Rollin with tha homies…” 🙁

  54. Sara says:

Even though she was just a shell of her healthier and sucessful days, I’ll never forget how much she broke my heart in “Don’t say a word.”

That fim is one of my guilty pleasures. Probably one of the two Michael Douglas films I’ve actually enjoyed (the other being The Game).

    This is sad.

  55. The Old KC says:

Viper, you are perpetuating myths about cardiac arrest – there are *survivors* of cardiac arrest. “Arrest” means “to stop”, but people with cardiopulmonary arrest are saved every single day. On another note I think this puts the nail in the coffin for me on Twitter – commenting on Twitter about a close friend, possibly ex-girlfriend’s, death is disgusting even if it is a heartfelt sentiment. In this case I can’t even say it was heartfelt.

  56. CB Rawks says:

“People are stupid if they think cardiac arrest is a cause of death. WHEN A PERSON DIES THEIR HEART STOPS.- edited for expediency- There is no such think as cardiac arrest being the CAUSE of death.”

Yes, I think we should get pedantic and hair-split and rant inanely, like Viper.

  57. Kathie says:

I feel sorry for her family, I believe the poor child is beyond pain or distress now but her family (not so much the sketchy husband) is left to pick up the pieces and live with an unfillible void in their lives. When someone so young dies it is pitiful to me, its like losing a piece of the future.

  58. diva says:

I just read that her husband doesn’t want an autopsy performed, but the cornorer is going to do it anyway. That seems suspect to me, when he should be grieving and wanting to know what happened to her, that he wants to stop an autopsy from happening. I hope he didn’t have anything to do with this.

  59. Emily says:

God, the least Ashton could have done is fucking spell properly on his Twat post. Using numbers instead of words REALLY shows you care, dickhead.

  60. hmm says:

And how many people will crawl out of the woodworks to talk about her problems in detail? Or will she get the Heath Ledger treatment and they’ll come up with some bogus story to explain another young person dying too soon? There’s a story on another site about her losing consciousness on the set of her last film and behaving erratically. You have to wonder at some point if the powers that be in Hollywood will ever take addiction seriously and stop turning a blind eye and issuing platitudes when “tragedy” strikes.

  61. andrea says:

viper, your “logic” is b.s. of course your freaking heart stopping is a cause of death. if my heart stops (knock on wood), guess what? it’s going to kill me. obviously, there had to be a reason her heart stopped. and, obviously, it will take some time for doctors to figure that out. but whatever happened, it caused her heart to stop, which caused her to pass away. and, yes, people go into cardiac arrest and live to tell about it.

  62. andrea says:

p.s. 2009 has been a bullsh*t year. all these celebs need to go hide in an underground bunker until new year’s day when it’s safe to come out. OR get their sh*t together and take care of themselves. ya know, either or. all of these deaths and scandals, tragic yes, but goddam am i getting tired of reading about celebrities doing incredible damage either to themselves or their families(cough, tiger, cough). tons of this stuff has been completely preventable. youre rich and privileged people, it shouldnt be THAT hard to not completely destroy your lives on the regular. i say to the screwed up hollywood/sports types: show some goddam respect for yourself, life, and other people already.

  63. Moore says:

Ophelia, ashton never tweeted that. He was actually nice about what he said. I see no problem using twitter. most people use it for everything anyway, why wouldn’t they use it now. twitter is a quick way to reach millions and express your feelings at a given moment. Tacky would be to not reach out in person as well.

Luanne, you will be missed. You always seemed so bubbly and I loved your laugh. I truly wish your family comfort. Rest in peace.

  64. Lita says:

How awful, just 32. Sigh – sads.

  65. Maria says:

@Andrea- exactly what I was thinking. Hello, heart attack=heart stop= death. Viper is just ignorant of biology, apparently.

Put me in the eating disorder camp, although with her husband having a fishy medical emergency on an airplane just weeks ago and requesting no autopsy- that leads me to think drugs (rx or otherwise) as well.

  66. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

    Sad story.

How many seconds until bands of random celebrities come out spouting insincere soliloquies about her ‘warmth’ or ‘spirit’.

  67. snowball says:

Or until bands of random celebrities who worked with Brittany come out spouting sincere, heartfelt soliloqiues about her warmth and spirit? Probably pretty soon.

I wish people wouldn’t take what other people say on message boards to be gospel. If you want to know what Ashton tweeted, go to the source, Ashton’s Twitter page. If you want to know why Brittany’s husband doesn’t want an autopsy, go to TMZ or even People.com (it’s because they’re Jewish).

Now I’m going to add to the mix because I only skimmed through what was posted here (except for the first post, and I hope you will feel badly for what you said, Queenie), so I don’t know if it was mentioned yet, but I believe Brittany was also diabetic. I seem to remember her mentioning it a few years ago when she had gained some weight back and was doing an interview for one of her movies and was being questioned about her weight gain and being healthy, etc.

  68. “There is no such think as cardiac arrest being the CAUSE of death.”

Actually Viper, cardiac arrest is the listed cause of death on my mother’s death certificate. But thank you for being ignorant and trying to argue with science.

  69. Dannni says:

So, so tragic. Yes, she does a recent history of mental illness. That has been evident. How terrible for her family this time of year.

  70. Guest says:

    To: Ms Triste and Linda

Thank heaven you’re not on a jury. To wonder if Brittany Murphy’s husband was responsible for her death because of his physical appearance is disgraceful. You two need serious help. Grow up or get an education, please.

  71. Kevin says:

    Good Post Snowy…as usual.

  72. jen says:

@ MsTriste – no, you’re not the only one. Every time I see that man I get horribly creepy vibes from him.

This is so so sad. I’ve always really liked Brittany Murphy, this breaks my heart. Rest in peace, sweetheart.

  73. abbizmal says:

RIP Brittany. She was a talented young woman. Amazing to watch in “Don’t Say a Word.” What sad news. 🙁

  74. Essie says:

Snowball, it’s true that Jewish people object to autopsy (so do Jehovahs and a couple other religions) but, in the case of sudden death, they have no choice.

This is all so sad. Brittany did have talent but she seems to have wasted it in the past few years. I seriously doubt her picture will be shown during the Oscar presentation of those who died during 2009. First, because there were just so darn many and second, because she wasn’t really all that famous. Also, I have a feeling we will now hear why she was fired from her last two or three movies. This is stuff the ragmags will eat up.

  75. mae says:

What an awful news. Sad, sad, sad.

  76. Ben says:

Queenie (all the way up the top) you’re a bitch.

  77. Ana says:

I loved her in Girl, Interrupted and Just Married!! I watched it the other night and remembered how good she was.

I immediately thought her shady husband did it. Then my second thought was that it could be due to drugs.
    Rip Brittany.

  78. Fat Elvis says:

What a senseless tragedy. Many prayers to her family and friends.

Viper: Only you would soil a thread about someone’s untimely demise with your ignorant ranting and raving.

  79. I Choose Me says:

Alot of people don’t know this but she was also a great singer – she was the voice of Gloria in the Happy Feet movie. I thought she was really talented actress as well and I’m sad that she passed so young. RIP Brittany.

  80. CB Rawks says:

“First, because there were just so darn many and second, because she wasn’t really all that famous.”

They show faceless hollywood Suits all the time. None of us knew them but they had coffee during the production of the movie.
Anyway, Brittany worked constantly in a wide variety of genres. She was known and will be painfully missed.

  81. WTF?!? says:

Only *orthodox* Jews consider it a desecration to perform an autopsy. From her demeanor and manner of dress, they are very clearly not orthodox. Were they, she would also have to be buried within 24 hrs, which means the autopsy would be almost finished by now.
If the law deems it necessary, a suspicious death overrides religious preference, anyway.

  82. oh please says:

This is so sad. RIP BM. Clueless is the best movie ever.

  83. Ally says:

This is very sad. She had a rare comic knack for a young actress. (Besides “Clueless”, that movie she did with Dakota Fanning was pretty good for a Hollywood chick flick.)

As for Kutcher, some statements call for not-twitter and formal spelling out and punctuation. What a douche.

  84. lucy2 says:

I think there’s been a lot of reports about her husband being a con-man and more. I sincerely hope he had nothing to do with her death – it’s tragic enough, especially for her parents.

  85. Ophelia says:

Moore- you’re right, I found his twitter page and he didn’t say that, or he took it down. I still think it’s pretty tacky but that’s just me. I can’t stand Ashton Kutcher and his irritating Twitter obsession.

  86. Goddess711 says:

Put me down for complications with diabetes. The husband looks creepy, what the eff was she doing with him?
My kids were devasted, we’re big fans of The Ramen Girl, we watch it regularly.
This is sad, she was a talented, beautiful young woman.

  87. Jen says:

As someone who suffered from and conquered bulimia (and is NOT a celebrity), I find it sad that so many people are so judgmental and unnecessarily harsh when it comes to eating disorders. Unless you’ve been there, you have NO idea how rough these diseases are. It’s not some sort of joke, and it’s unfair to claim “no sympathy” for someone who’s died because of it. Would you claim “no sympathy” for someone who dies from Cancer? Or any other disease? If you would, then fine. That’s your prerogative, I guess.

Viper? You’re an idiot. Of course Cardiac Arrest is a cause of death. Check any chart in a hospital and see how many times it’s listed as COD.

Until the “truth” comes out, it’s all just speculation anyways. I’m sincerely wondering about an eating disorder as well, and it doesn’t make me “loathe” her, it makes me feel sick and sorry for her and her family. She should have sought treatment a long time ago.

I had also heard about her being Diabetic, which can also cause heart failure when you don’t keep it managed. It’s a sad situation all around. RIP Brittany. 🙁

  88. WTF?!? says:

Jen– I don’t think anyone is making fun of it, but as you know, the health ramifications of eating disorders can’t be discounted as a contributing cause, and will likely prove to be the major underlying factor.
    Glad you’re in recovery.
And yes, Viper is a dolt.

  89. Aspen says:

I’m just so sad about this. I adored watching her films and I worried that her health was in danger.

  90. jaundicemachine says:

So sad to hear. Sounds like Brittany struggled with some inner demons. The End is always sad, but its so much more tragic when emotional fragility plays a factor in it.

Shame on all the judgmental comments – regardless of the cause of death, a family lost a daughter/sister/wife today.

  91. Jen says:

Wow. I guess judging someone from afar is fun. Nice to know that some people lead a “perfect” life and sets a good example for every young woman she comes across.

  92. oh hey says:

@queenie. Wow. If the comments on CB are worse that the ones on Dlisted, that’s pretty harsh. I haven’t followed Brit’s personal life, so I don’t know much about the husband etc. If nothing else, even if anyone doesn’t care, that was still someone’s wife, daughter, etc, and as far as we know, she wasn’t as reckless as the Lohans of the world.

    RIP Luanne :-(.

  93. Ophelia says:

Jen- I totally agree with you.Anorexia and bulimia are just as much diseases as cancer. Shame on those of you judging her. When Rush Limbaugh dies, then judge away. He’s an unrepentant jackass while Brittany Murphy was probably just a sweet and very sick girl. The way she died has no bearing on the type of person she was, and I really doubt she deserves all this B.S.
*edit* I don’t want this to turn into some political thing, so I seriously just picked a jackass at random. I could say the same about John Edwards.

  94. Cat says:

Poor sweet girl! I feel so sorry that her life was cut short and she’ll never get to grow old with her husband.

And why do people make mean comments after someone dies?? Especially since we don’t know what happened. If you don’t know why she died, just say sorry. Or nothing. Sheesh it’s not that hard.

  95. Solveig says:

Jen I agree with you. Anorexia is as a diseas as cancer, AIDS, depression and obesity and it deserves the same respect due to the other diseases.
I don’t know if she was anorexic, she looks thin but not anorexic thin. And cardiac arrest can occur even in healthy looking teenagers, there’s no need to be drug addict…

She was a good actress and everytime i saw Girl, interrupted I can’t help but think that she was the one who deserved the oscar as best supporting actress. She was heartbreaking.

    May she rest in peace.

  96. CB Rawks says:

“Save your sympathy for cancer patients.”

I’m capable of feeling sympathy for many people’s various tragedies, Lillian.
And Merry Christmas to you, you sweet-spirited pleasure.

Queenie and Lillian – Pull your head in you two! Cold much? You both disgust me!
You dont know what actaully killed her so how can you say such things. Brittany HAS set a great example if it turns out the Anorexia (a disease) killed her. For all the young ones out there, let it be known, Anorexia KILLS!

  98. oh hey says:

“And why do people make mean comments after someone dies?? ”

Internet courage. Not that anyone ever has to say anything regardless of how they feel, but sadly, all the mean comments isn’t going to make someone like Paris or Lindsay say “Wow, I’ve haven’t been living right and stuff, I should totally cut back on the partying!”

  99. Jen says:

LOL! Well said CB Rawks. 😀

  100. NicoleAM says:

Shame. She looks scary skinny in those pics posted above. Wouldn’t surprise me either if an eating disorder/drugs were involved. She was so cute in Clueless. Tough for her family at any time, but probably stings even more with x-mas just a few days away. 🙁
(Somewhat random, but they didn’t include Brad Renfro in the Oscar memorial tribute, which kinda surprised me.)

  101. Michelle says:

How tragic… condolences to Brittany’s family. It’s got to be so incredibly difficult to lose someone, especially so young and during the holidays.

She always reminded me of a little girl lost. Always looking for love, approval and acceptance from everyone and anyone. I hope she’s at Peace now .. regardless of the reason she was someones love, daughter, wife … we’ll miss you Brittany!! RIP and know that you were loved!!

I also can’t understand how some people can be so judgemental and insensitive in some posts. I choose to believe it’s caused by their ignorance, not by a cold heart. Poor Brittany.I feel so so sorry for this beautiful, talented girl and her family. It makes me think of what Truman Capote wrote about Monroe: Why does life have to be so f***ing rotten?. RIP

  105. Sadly says:

She always seemed so vulnerable to me. Feisty but fragile. And she seemed sincere and real. What a loss for the world.

  106. Gracie says:

I loved Brittany and all her roles. Very talented young woman who seemed to make alot of bad choices lately. It’s sad especially when someone young dies without having a chance to change things.

I think her husband is part of whatever was wrong with her. Just my two cents.
Here they are together recently…in a story from dlisted.

    RIP Brittany Murphy

  108. CaliMD says:

Actually viper is correct. Cardiac arrest = death. If one is resuscitated (i.e. the heart is re-started by a defibrillator) then one is again alive. Few people are lucky enough for this to happen. The exception is when someone is on a cardiopulmonary bypass machine (during open heart surgery) and their heart is intentionally stopped and restarted when they come off bypass–they are not considered dead while on bypass even though their heart has stopped. In California we are not allowed to list “cardiac arrest” as a cause of death, precisely because it means nothing besides the fact that you’re dead. And yes, I *am* a doctor. Viper, regardless of what people say about your comments, you’re correct here.

  109. Bina says:

She had the most beautiful and distinctive voice in Hollywood. Poor girl. RIP.

  110. viper says:

    << medical student

Thank you caliMD for setting it straight.

As for Murphy, in her case I would definately want to know the cause of death. Far too many people speculating or over dramatizing it. (homicide) From what I can tell though, her eating disorder could well have been a contributing element in her demise. The girl looks beyond frail on the main photo.

I can’t belive it 🙁 she had such a beutiful smile

My heart is broken 🙁 RIP Brittany

  113. la chica says:

how could this not be a wake up call for some of young Hollywood?

what saddens me is the thought of whether she ever found happiness. she seemed always to be looking for it, sometimes in the wrong places.

  114. Lara says:

Wow this is really hard for me to read. Last Christmas day I had a cardiac arrest and its only due to the fact that my dad had done a life saving course a month before that I’m still here. The reason I had a cardiac arrest? No one knows after many many tests and I’m a healthy 25 year old that doesn’t do drugs and exercise on a regular basis so for all the speculation the reason why she died may never be known.

  115. GatsbyGal says:

I’m going on the record right now…I think her creepy husband Monjack had a hand in this.

I loved how cute/quirky she was in Just Married. I’d forgotten she was in Drop Dead Gorgeous, but she was perfect in that role too. Don’t say a word… 8 mile… girl interrupted…. I liked her work a lot. Too young to pass this way. RIP.

  118. K-Love says:

It is so sad that someone so young, and proably a death that could of been prevented. My prayers goes out to her family. Parents should never have too bury their children.

stinabelle- Omgosh! Rollin’ with the homies! I loved that movie! It was my favorite part!!!

I am still so sad 🙁

  121. notprfect says:

I just heard about this. So sad. R.I.P., Brittany.

  122. Cat says:

I loved her as Cory’s fake girlfriend on Boy Meets World! Anyone remember that? You little badger 🙂

  123. apsutter says:

Poor girl….it seems like she had a lot of demons. She’s looked painfully thin for a while now and always has those HUGE bags under her eyes. There has been stories of her drug addiction and eating disorders for a while now. Too sad.

  124. Codzilla says:

My deepest sympathies to her loved ones, especially her mom. I can’t even begin to imagine the horror of losing a child.

Viper: It’s not so much what you say, it’s how you say it. Right out of the gate, you’re calling people “stupid” for believing one thing or another. This poor girl died, and her family is surely devastated. Show a little class and dial it down for once.

  125. Jen says:

Dear CaliMD and Viper. *I* am a doctor too. I’m VERY well aware of the fact that if one is resuscitated, then they are “alive” again. *rolleyes*. However, cardiac arrest is a simple cause of death. What Viper said, Cali, is that “if your heart stops, you’re dead”. Which is absolutely true. HOWEVER. The heart can be resuscitated. And it is, quite often. ESPECIALLY when it comes to a healthy 32 year old. *confused*

Another thing that Viper said is that “cardiac arrest is NOT a COD.” I believe what he/she said “If your heart stops you’re dead”. Though they weren’t so grammatically correct. ;).Yep. True. CA is STILL a COD. There may be underlying factors, but really? If you have never written “Cardiac Arrest” as COD on a chart, you aren’t a real doctor. *shrug*. If you’re really a doctor, you’d GET THAT.What part of that do you not GET? COD as Cardiac Arrest, is VERY common. I’m not sure where you’re practicing medicine, but really? Are you joking me? Or are you agreeing with Viper because you have the same asinine views. You can tell me, really.

One of my Fav Actress ever.nooo

    RIP Sunshine.

  127. soledad says:

come on…i cant believe what I am reading. You are GUESSING she had drug problems, or eating dissorder…? who cares? she was a human being, with proyects, ilusions, dreams. The fact that she was famouse doesnt give anyone the right to assumed always the bad things. Many people around the world die young, because nothing is for granted in life…so, try to live it fully. Carpe Diem. I really enjoyed her work.
