Madonna talks ‘Raising Malawi’ on CNN, only moves her jaw

Madonna will appear in an interview to air on CNN this morning to talk about her philanthropy efforts in Malawi. In a short clip available on CNN’s website (above) she seems very earnest in wanting to help desperately poor orphans in the nation where she’s completed two controversial and arguably illegal adoptions. Like her earlier video asking for donations to Raising Malawi, I had a hard time focusing on what she was saying because I kept staring at the way her mouth seemed to move independently from the rest of her face – like a puppet with a detached jaw.

Madonna explained that she got involved in Malawi after receiving a call from a Malawian woman asking for help in her impoverished country. The woman was “so impassioned about what was going on at the time,” and told her “that there were over a million children [in Malawi] who were orphaned by AIDs.” When Madonna said she was sorry and didn’t know where Malawi was, the woman hung up. She said “she was crying on the phone… the whole package got to me.” She then “went on an investigatory trip and found out exactly where Malawi was.”

Construction is now underway on the “Raising Malawi Academy for Girls” in the capital of Lilongwe. Madonna has pledged to donate $250,000 to Raising Malawi, having upped her initial pledge of $100,000 in matching donations to the charity. Questions remain about the legitimacy of the charity and $3.7 million that may be missing from its coffers.

In 2008, Madonna’s only charitable donation was nearly $500,000 to the Kabbalah center, with no money going toward Raising Malawi. It’s possible that money went to Raising Malawi anyway – last year it was not registered as a separate charity and all donations were going through the Kabbalah center. The Raising Malawi website says it’s registered as a non-profit organization so they’ve probably taken care of that. It still has clear ties to Kabbalah. Some blog posts are written by controversial co-leader Michael Berg and the website notes that it teaches Success for Kids, a Kabbalah program, throughout charitable projects in Malawi.

Do you think CNN’s Alina Cho will ask Madonna about the controversies involving her charity?

Also as part of CNN’s “Big Stars, Big Giving,” Elton John talks about his AIDs foundation and how his friendship with Ryan White changed his life. I really warmed up to the guy after watching this video. In contrast to Madonna, he didn’t protest when he was told that a potential adoption would violate the law in the orphan’s country, and just decided to financially support the little HIV-positive boy that he and his partner were hoping to care for.

The Elton Jon thing is so sad. I can’t believe countries (USA included) feel it is right to deny a child a loving home because the parents are gay. SO IGNORANT!

Oh and Madonna is super duper creepy!

  2. Dorothy says:

Not all the states deny gay adoptions but enough do that I lumped them all in together.

  3. Hel says:

Dorothy, Elton was not stopped from adopting the boy because he was gay, but because of his age.

  4. clare says:

    Merry Frozen X-Mas, Madonna!
Watched the video with the sound off, and it looks like it takes effort for her to even open and shut her eyes!

  5. Dorothy says:

Hel – the other reason is because his marriage to his partner David is not legal in the Ukraine . And you have to be married to adopt – so to me that says if you are gay you can not adopt.

  6. Toe says:

Mad looks ok to me. The person hung up on THE Madonna? That’s good. It’s gotten her to open her world map book.

  7. Jaded says:

She only donated $250K???? The woman is worth freaking billions and that’s all she donated???? Put your money where your frozen mouth is honey and pony up a few million. You don’t need the money from all your endorsements, donate that! You made more money than God touring in 2008, so quit demanding that people who make far less than you match your mingy donation and do what Brad and Angelina do, fork it over, in large amounts! Directly! Not through Kaballah! What a phoney and a poseur, she makes me sick.

  8. princess pea says:

How did a random stranger manage to get Madge’s phone number? That’s a little weird right there.

  9. Phowie says:

A woman from Malawi made a direct telephone call to Madonna? And Madonna takes the call? Where the heck did she find her number?

  10. Tracy says:

Raising Malawi is an arm of Kabala.

  11. BitterBetty says:

Did she just say she was looking to adopted because she wanted to give back? so her son and daughter are basically her charity cases? great.

  12. Lauren says:

I like Madonna’s music, but I can’t stand listening to her talk..seems very contrived, and her her frozen robotic face is disturbing!

  13. Sumodo says:

The old girl (I share the same birthday and am two years older) looks Asian. Here comes another Victoria Principal look-alike. And, $250K? C’mon, Madge, purse as tight as your face?

  14. OXA says:

I think she is starting to look like the puppet from Waylan & Madame. She has a lot of balls asking people to donate to her “Shrine to Maddona Academy” when that amount o fmoney could eduate millions, not the chosen few.

  15. juiceinla says:

damn it, she is turning into Jocelyn wintercat lady…. MADONNA-STOP WITH THE PLASTIC SURGERY ALREADY. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS VOGUE, PLEASE.
(Yea I know, I went with “vogue” because I could not come up with another singularly iconic phrase so permanently associated with Madge and Madge alone. Sigh.)

  16. No Sensi says:

@ Dorothy and Hel – yeah the problem is he’s an OLD queen, now that shouldn’t be allowed. Caring for a child needs the youthful gristle of Madonna of the Frozen Face…

  17. murmur says:

“A woman from Malawi made a direct telephone call to Madonna? And Madonna takes the call? Where the heck did she find her number?”

That’s what I want to know. I couldn’t get past that to learn any more about the charity.

  18. alibeebee says:

madonna please stop! my ears are bleeding atleast she is trying to do some good. too bad it’s in a very public spam kind of way

  19. Elise says:

I don’t believe a word she says. CNN should have picked a better celeb to represent celeb giving, not the Queen of self-promotion.

I think the only reason she adopted two African “orphans” was to outdo Jolie. Just another trend-hopping act from the woman who made a career out of stealing ideas from others.

  20. Ana says:

Okay, but in all fairness, Kim Kardashian’s face does the same thing!!!

  21. paranel says:

She is a frozen plastic face talentless bitch who got on top by self promoting shock value creating persona. she is also the real cheap low class selfish who does nothing to help anybody in need. Please.
