Domestic violence alleged in Courtney Love-Frances Bean custody hearing

Around Smashbox - Fall 2006 - Day 5

Ever since Courtney Love once again lost custody of her daughter Frances on Dec. 11, speculation about what prompted it has run rampant. Even Love herself heightened the rumors by insinuating that the entire courtroom battle was little more than a “deceptive” teen trying to get her own way. But latest documents filed by the Frances Bean legal team imply something far more serious than that. Perhaps this explains the restraining order granted to Frances?

New allegations in the Courtney Love/Frances Bean case — lawyers have asked to seal documents relating “to a minor and allegations of domestic violence.”

TMZ has obtained documents filed by lawyers for the guardianship that was established on Frances Bean Cobain’s behalf. As we first reported, a judge stripped Love of legal control over her daughter on December 11.

Now we have new docs filed by the guardianship asking to seal all court documents that relate “to a minor and allegations of domestic violence.” The papers do not get specific, but they do refer to sealing Frances Bean’s medical records. The docs also say, “In this proceeding, every document reveals details of Frances’s (sic) relationship with her mother.”

As we already reported the judge issued a temporary restraining order, prohibiting Love from having contact with her daughter. According to the new docs, the TRO “…restrains Courtney Love Cobain, from certain behavior and from coming within a certain distance of Frances and her guardians.”

[From TMZ]

I’m not even sure what to think about this. On one hand, Frances is a minor and her privacy needs to be protected. But if there is even a hint of abuse in her medical records, I think it should be taken seriously. Courtney Love is no stranger to physical altercations but one would hope that wouldn’t be the case with her own child. Whatever is going on, I am sure we won’t have to wait long for Mommie Dearest Courtney to rant about it in the social media forum of her choosing.

good god from some angles that child has a striking and shocking resemblance to her father

  2. sarny says:

I wonder if she ends up in jail for all the missing money.

  3. WTF?!? says:

Just because they are sealing the records to protect Frances doesn’t mean they aren’t taking it seriously. In fact, it indicates they are taking it very seriously, especially considering the girl was granted a restraining order. We don’t need the sordid details for the courts and relevant parties to make the determination what is in Frances’ best interest.

  4. TaylorB says:

That poor girl, what a life, her dad kills himself and her mother is an obnoxious addict well on her way to doing the same via OD. Add to all of that her private life is constantly splashed all over the mags. How does a 17 year old have the coping skills to deal with that?

Sounds like these court orders are the best thing for her, and I hope her mother shuts her trap, gets some help, and tries to make it right with her child.

  5. Brittney says:

Stellar grasp of the English language once again… there should not be a “sic” after “Frances’s.” That’s the correct possessive form of a singular noun ending in S. Only if “Frances” referred to more than one France would its possessive form have only one S.

  6. TaylorB says:

    Brittney,

Are you able to text people? Considering your tendency towards insisting that everyone, at all times, display perfect grammar/spelling/syntax I would suspect that the vernacular of texting must be enough to prohibit you from even trying to text. Hell, I dont blame ya, i dont texst eather, cuz them peopel ca’nt spull or nuthin LOL, OMG, etc

The grammar police are dead… let it go. Please.

  7. WTF?!? says:

Actually, Brittney, the correct expression of a possessive in the case of a proper name ending in “s” is with the apostrophe immediately following the “s” (examples: Achilles’ heel, Dickens’ novels).
The superfluous “s” is only appropriate with common nouns.
Nice try, though. Stay in school!

  8. diva says:

Somehow I think Courtney will not obey the restraining order after reading about this. She doesn’t appear to have any control over herself anymore, so much for a sober coach.

  9. fan says:

i just hope that she did not touch frances because it will be all over

  10. texasmom says:

Eeek! Courtney looks so scary up close! There is no way of seeing if Frances has a family resemblance to her mom, there isn’t anything original anymore!

  11. Munkey says:

Poor Frances. I’ll take my life of anonymity and modest means over this kind of crap any day.

WTF/Taylor: I salute you and your very successful efforts to derail Brittney.

  12. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

    @ WTF hee hee!

  13. Alecto says:

it’s the eyes. she has her fathers eyes. no doubt about it. go ahead brittney, blast me for not using any capitol letters. or whatever else i did wrong. i hate the grammer and spelling police.

  14. Lisa says:

Actually she has her father’s jaw and her mother’s eyes and nose.
Courtney Love has been violent all her life, this is old news, she always jumped on people. This information that she physically abused her daughter does not surprise me.

  15. MooMooMooMooMoo says:

This is horrible, I feel really sad for Frances. What an awful mess of a parental situation, ugh!!
The batshit female rocker persona is not so cool when you’re a 40+ year old mother. If this is true, I am completely disgusted, this really is something else.

  16. shibajonz says:

Has anyone else noticed that Courtney’s FB page has vanished?

  17. GatsbyGal says:

It’ll be a miracle if this girl is able to come out the other side of this in one piece. Everything in her history and genetics is playing against her. Dad’s a dead druggie, mom’s a living abusive druggie.

Also, I hope they lock Courtney up and throw away the key. I have no more patience for her.

  18. Wresa says:

    Thank you, WTF.

What a messed up childhood. Hopefully she won’t cope with difficult times the way her parents did. Money does not = happiness.

  19. Alex Esparza says:

I am an English teacher. Brittney is correct about the possessive of Frances. However, WTf’s post expresses a commonly held misconception.

  20. fee says:

Nothing Courtney Love does surprises me anymore. It’s unfortunate, but true.

On a sidenote, Frances looks like a female version of her father. Almost frighteningly so.

  21. GatsbyGal says:

Hey Alex Esparza, I don’t care if you’re an english teacher or not; according to that wikipedia article you linked to, it seems that both Frances’s and Frances’ could both be correct.

  22. Jessie says:

@Alex Esparza–thanks for letting us that Brittney was correct, but I think everyone is annoyed more at her being the Grammar Police. If we had wanted an English lesson (and a snide one at that), we wouldn’t have asked one from MSat, who is probably too busy proofreading other posts to keep us entertained!

Good writing, MSat, ignore the nitpickers lol

Re: Nothing can save Courtney Love now but an exorcism and a flea bath.

  23. Spike says:

    Hi Alex,

I’ve been and English teacher and have my BA and MA in English. WTF does not have a misconception. Either use is correct.

    Q. When indicating possession of a word that ends in s, is it correct to repeat the s after using an apostrophe? For example, which is correct: “Dickens’ novel” or “Dickens’s novel”?

    A. Either is correct, though CMOS 15 recommends the latter.

    http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/CMS_FAQ/PossessivesandAttributives/PossessivesandAttributives23.html

I looked at this pretty extensively and journalism (which TMZ pretends to be lol) tends to use the s’

Since we’re not writing academic papers I think we’re all good here. I don’t mind IM or text speak, but think it sometimes takes away from the writer’s credibility (see Courtney’s rants online).

Grammar aside — Courtney has burnt every bridge behind her. She has a personality disorder either borderline or schizoaffective. (Unforunately I know this too well.) That combined with her father’s history of deep depression and drug addiction by both parents doesn’t not bode well for the Bean. I just hope that she’s finally getting the support she needs and has a good therapist.

  24. Lita says:

“exorcism and a flea bath” – LOL.

  25. Jazz says:

lol @Jessie. Courtney does look like she needs a flea bath! And she should be wearing a flea collar at all times. Hell, stick one on Amy Winehouse as well!

  26. Lenore says:

Actually Alex, that Wikipedia article basically says “neither’s correct, or both are correct, sometimes. It depends.” English is such a delightfully inconsistent language I’m astonished anyone ever manages to learn it.

Oh, and specifically, Brittney isn’t being the grammar police, but the punctuation police. Why can nobody on teh interwebz get anything right?! GHOD!!!

    [/sarcasm]

  27. Lita says:

Err this comment may show up in duplicate but I think it’s been lost somehow .. Happy Christmas to one and all, best wishes to everyone for a wonderul Christmas tomorrow with your kindred. Enjoy, have fun and be merry!

  28. WTF?!? says:

Alex Esparza, you are absolutely incorrect, and I am terrified for your students, especially since you quote Wikipedia– the site where any moron can upload any inaccuracy they want and call it “fact”– as your resource. My master’s degree in journalism trumps your undergraduate degree in education, more so since we are discussing a published article.
Please refer to a real resource (Strunk & White, AP Stylebook, etc.) and quit your job IMMEDIATELY.
Jessie, don’t drink the Wiki Kool-Aid.

  29. Jeff says:

Unfortunately that little girl looks exactly like her mother, even that crazy stare Courtney Love is known for. I hope the Cobain family can protect her from crazy Courtney.

  30. crash2GO2 says:

Actually, she looks exactly like her father. I don’t know how anyone could say otherwise. Same mouth, jaw, nose, eyes.

It’s obvious that Courtney Love is mentally ill. I am glad that Francis is getting protection from her at last.

  31. ng says:

thanks for the english lessons to the above posters. It was quite amusing and good to know there are such educated people on this board! Makes me feel less pathetic for spending so much time reading celeb gossip 🙂

  32. oh hey says:

@WTF?!?. After doing some research, the only way Brittany is wrong is that TMZ might not be using the correct style. Seeing as that they’re “media”, they should be using AP style (I deleted the text behind AP, since you claim to have a Masters in Journalism), which they just apostrophe after the s. If they used Chigaco Manual, which says to add and apostrophe and an s even if the noun has an s on the end, she would be right.

Grammar rules change alot over time, and continue to change as we speak; just because a person is on the internet is no excuse for not to use them.

I love snark as much as the next guy, and I know we’ll be reading some more “this isn’t school” type of responses. I also know that celebrity gossip or the responses they generate aren’t high-brow reading. But to quote Spike , “it sometimes takes away from the writer’s credibility.”

  33. oh hey says:

    OT: Run Frances, RUN!

  34. Robert says:

Has anyone seen pictures of Courtney Love before she had her nose redone and her jaw reduced, she had a very prominent jaw and nose before she met Kurt Cobain, I’m sorry I just don’t see any resemblance to Kurt Cobain, and I’m sure the child will be fine now that she has regained control over her estate.

  35. gg says:

You don’t see any resemblance to Kurt Cobain?? Really? Frances looks like Kurt with a wig and lipstick on!

Also, to the smartypantzes (yes I made it up) going on about punctuation, I like punctuation as much as the next guy, but ya’ll have got spelling errors in your admonishing posts. Even as you correct others. It’s “an”, not “and”, and “a lot”, not “alot”.

… just sayin (as far as my post here goes, it’s called vernacular, it won’t bite you).

    merry xmas everybody

  36. Codzilla says:

“Grammar rules change alot over time, and continue to change as we speak; just because a person is on the internet is no excuse for not to use them.”

Today’s lesson, kids, is about the word “irony.”

  37. Robert says:

That’s why Kurt Cobain was trying to split from Courtney Love, she probably kicked his ass too.
I just looked at picture of Kurt Cobain and he did not have a giant bulbous nose, like his daughter but the lips look like Kurt Cobain. Looks aren’t everything, she has her father’s legacy, and his family.

  38. Statler says:

    Taylor B. and Alecto:

So you’d just rather be ignorant?

    Nice.

    WTF?!?:

    Thanks.

  39. Kate says:

I was trying to remember who else makes crazy eyes like Frances Bean and her mother, and then it came to me
Jonathan Rhys Myers, he makes these crazy eyes in a lot of his photos, like he’s being run over by a train.

  40. Michelle says:

Shame it couldn’t have been Courtney who departed this mortal coil instead of Kurt all those years ago.

She’s always been vile, toxic, and downright nasty. Is any of this really shocking to anyone?

  41. oh hey says:

    @Codzilla

Yeah, that was a proofreading error on my part.

    @Michelle

To be fair, we don’t know what kind of parent Kurt would have been either. I just want know what judge in his right mind would give Frances back to Court to begin with.

Of course this would have been a better story if Frances emancipated herself, just as Court did at age 14.

  42. oh hey says:

    @Statler

Yeah, and these are the types that have full-time jobs in this economy.

  43. Michelle says:

    @oh hey-

I have no doubt that Kurt would have been a better parent than Courtney is. Hell, a pack of wolves could have done a better job of raising Frances.

  44. bbkttyfk says:

it’s all catching up to you now, huh courtney!
