Rihanna didn’t really cover up for conservative Abu Dhabi

Back in October, Rihanna was confirmed for a New Year’s Eve concert in Abu Dhabi. This was meant as a “thank you and I’m sorry” for canceling a previous concert back in May, when Rihanna pulled out of a planned Abu Dhabi concert because of “personal reasons” – mainly Chris Brown’s court date, where she had to appear. It was to be her first Middle East concert – but Abu Dhabi had to wait until New Year’s Eve to see Rihanna in concert. Provided one little detail: that she dress appropriately and conservatively. Uh… it’s like they don’t know Rihanna’s deal at all, right? Anyway, these are photos of Rihanna performing in Abu Dhabi. Is this considered conservative? To the credit of the Abu Dhabi people, so far no one is raising a stink about her outfit, though. I think they were just thrilled she came to them on such a big day:

Global superstar Rihanna brought in the new decade in front of over 10,000 fans with a stunning two hour long performance on the lawns of Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Palace followed by a spectacular firework display.

With an thrilling stage show with fantastic dance choreography and stunning costumes for the songstress, Rihanna’s Middle Eastern debut provided an unforgettable way to bring in 2010.

Arriving in Abu Dhabi two days prior to the concert to rehearse for her spectacular show, Rihanna performed some of her most celebrated hits including ‘Disturbia’, her new single ‘Hard’ and an encore of her smash hit ‘Umbrella’, the show organiser Flash Entertainment said in a press release on Saturday.

Energised by Rihanna’s action-packed show, party-goers then danced their way into the small hours of the morning at the La Rumba after party. Fans enjoyed R&B and eclectic house beats at the La Rumba after party which was headlined by hip-hop supremo DJ Green Lantern and continued with a fantastic line-up of regional and international DJs.

Flash Entertainment, the Abu Dhabi-based events consultancy that brought Rihanna to the capital, said the night was a “triumph”.

John Lickrish, Managing Director, Flash said: ‘‘Tonight was a huge success and a truly memorable way to end a great year for Flash and Abu Dhabi. Rihanna’s performance left us all breathless and set a very high benchmark for next year. With such outstanding artist performances in the past year, 2010 can only get bigger and better – Abu Dhabi has once more proved that it is the party capital of the region; we look forward to another incredible year ahead.’’

It’s more than possible that the whole “Rihanna must dress conservatively” angle was played up in the media for some added hype. It worked too – Rihanna’s performance probably won her legions of new fans in the Middle East. In any case, I think she came out a winner – and she also came out $500,000 richer for her two-hour performance.

In one last piece of Rihanna news, there are new rumors about Rihanna partying too hard and trying to “drive herself into the ground.” At least, according to Britain’s Now Magazine, where this story seems to have originated. A source who seems to think getting a tattoo is the sign of the apocalypse claims: “She’s going too far with it. She’s impulsive: she goes all out for something, but when it’s a tattoo, you can’t take it back. Every night’s the same. She goes clubbing, downs shots and manages to stay up until the early hours. It’s playing havoc with her sleep pattern, but she doesn’t seem to care. She seems to be on a mission to drive herself into the ground.” Rihanna recently got a backwards-cursive “Never a failure, always a lesson” tattoo, which seems like the least offensive thing she’s done, honestly. I mean, sure, she does out partying a lot. But I also think she works hard and she’s 21 years old. Meh. Maybe she is on the cusp of a breakdown. Or maybe she’s just figuring some sh-t out.

The fame machine can keep trying to shove this Tenhead down my throat, but I’m not buying her. She has no real star quality and her stupid hair and outfits just annoy.

When’s the next Jay-Z-sucking tart up for commentary?

  2. teehee says:

See my snide remark on JLos performance. LOL

  3. GatsbyGal says:

She’s more covered up than she could’ve been, to her credit.

  4. Peach says:

I don’t think the people of Abu Dhabi wanted her completely covered…just not with a small strap over her lady business a la Cher.

If you look at popular women Arab Artists today you’ll see they dress pretty liberally as well.

See: Nancy Ajram, Mariam Fares, Elyssa, Rola, Dana or Arwa.
There’s a ton of others…I haven’t lived there in so long it’s hard to keep up. But Melody Music is the main ‘hot’ channel. A quick peek at their website and it’s hard to tell it’s tailored to ‘Arabs’ rather than ‘Americans’.

  5. Pont Neuf says:

People from Abu Dhabi have their priorities wrong. They want Rihanna to sing, while she’s actually dressed? But that would force people to listen to her voice and… *gulp*. Never mind. All that desert sand must have obviously clogged their ears (and clouded their reason).

Anyway, good for Rihanna for getting paid to make an embarrassment out of herself, yet again. As for her partying hard, I doubt it. She seems to be pretty grounded and the fact that she was in an abusive relationship, and only wants to enjoy herself now, doesn’t mean that she’s self-destructing.

It just means that she’s enjoying being single, as must women can do. Oh, well, no: I forgot! A woman is nothing without a man, right?

Ah! Those tabloids, always so progressive…

  6. Laurrie says:

It doesn’t matter how much or little fabric she has, she always looks like a ten dollar hooker.

  7. bella says:

    @ filthycute –

Thank you for saying it for me!

I don’t understand her appeal, don’t care for her music, don’t care for her taste (or lack thereof), and I don’t how much “they” tell me I should like her, I don’t!

  8. WTF?!? says:

Can Rihanna go away in the new year, please? She’s a hot mess and her iota of talent has been used up.

She also needs to cover up– she may be young, but she doesn’t have a very good body to be showing it off as much as she does. Her legs look like tree trunks. Big, fat tree trunks.

And I second Laurrie. The $10 includes her tip.

  9. JM says:

I understand the need to distract from her singing, but Rihanna always makes me wonder why she wants to be showing THAT body off. Hamhocks, indeed.

  10. Orangejulius says:

There’s no accounting for taste (or lack thereof) – as a straight woman, I find her irresistably sexy and gorgeous.

  11. Dhavy says:

I rather see/hear her than JLo or Beyonce anytime

  12. Raven says:

She looks pretty covered up to me. Waist-high bottoms and a belt covering most of her midriff, plus no see-through clothing like J-Lo’s.

  13. alibeebee says:

have you seen her perfomr live? she has zero to no stage presence she does not put on a show and i fear she does not know how to hence the reason for the outlandish clothing. the reason why they aren’t putting up a stink is because her weird outfit was the show because hewr singing live is not good trust me I heard it live sort of not good. her weirdness is the only cachet

  14. BK1Diva says:

I am honestly tired of Rihanna. Here she uses the comments of wanting to speak out about the abuse because of “young girls are looking to her”,although the album tracks are garbage, and should had been better produced, yet she had an ample opportunity to turn her album and situation around and live as she supposedly stated in her interview, but still lives on the damned edge with her twisted publicly contrieved lifestyle. I am sorry, when you are a celebrity and or public figure, your life is public. If you don’t want to judged, then get out of the business. Rihanna’s image, album and currently lifestyle, is indicative to what she claims this whole Chris Brown and experience was about. “Go Hard”, should had been about women empowerment and using young girls in her video, “Wait Your Turn”, could had been used to teach girls about rushing into bad relationships, “Russian Rouleette” could had been used to talk to girls about dangerous relationships. Bottom line, the songs are not in correlation to what her PR and marketing team should be doing to save her sagging sales, image and career.

The gurl definately needs help and I have been wondering this whole situatin with her and Chris Brown over the past two years, where were their parents? Like most of these young stars, they are sitting back collecting a check and not checking on their kids-After this incident, both parents should had been called in and they should had been put into counseling and NO ALBUMS should had been released ….SMDH!!!–The music industry is like selling your soul to the devil!!!

  15. Half a million for two hours? Dang, girl.

  16. diva says:

I believe the hard paartying story, I have seen her photographed coming out of clubs looking wasted a lot over the last few months. She also needs to lose some weight and hit the gym, she is not in shape to wear the kind of clothes that she likes.

  17. Popcorny says:

Way to go on making thighs look like incarcerated sides o’ beef.
And it looks like she giving birth to Tina Turner or a neglected golden retriever from the top of her head.
Who is telling this girl she looks good?
Gaga has got the weird stuff covered, she’s the go-to freak and looks good doing it.
This Rhianna is starting to act like a desperate Lily Allen, relying more heavily on props (and men) ripped off from other entertainers.

  18. westender says:

    @Popcorny
” Way to go on making thighs look like incarcerated sides o’ beef.
And it looks like she giving birth to Tina Turner or a neglected golden retriever from the top of her head”

I was having a bad start to my day, but that comment made laugh so much! Thank you

PS: I agree with your comment!

  19. ligeia says:

i think she looks good, but then again i don’t find protruding ribs and 12 yr old boy bodies attractive so eh…to each their own? burn her at the stake for having hips.

  20. snowball says:

Personally, actually going in to your hairdresser and actually asking for that dead orange possum on her head is symptomatic of her downward spiral. Didn’t LiLo start to go whack when she dyed her hair blonde?

I watched that video for Hard – and I could only watch it once. Is she trying to copy Beyonce? What’s with the leotards and effed up jackets? She’s too ginormous to carry off a Gaga look.

You know she’s out of material when half the song is repeating the same word over and over. “Yeah, yeah, yeah,” blech blech blech.

She’s not talented nor interesting enough to pull off anything more than her Umbrella ella ella phase.

  21. gracie says:

I’m so glad I read the comments here! I agree – the press just crams her down our throats… and, I don’t get it! Her voice is nasal and high-pitched, and she is awfully, well, uh ‘beyonce-like’ in her body type. bleh. I don’t want to see it, either.

  22. suki says:

I love Russian Roulette, but honestly I don’t care for that many of her other songs. I think she has talent but the material she’s working with is not good.I really wish she wouldn’t try so hard to be “hard” and would just sing. As for her size I don’t think she’s that big I actually think she looks better than a lot of her peers (except for that hair).

  23. PigskinMama says:

Her short hair always looked so cute and stylish but now it’s getting absurd.

  24. Silva came through towards the end but it was too late

  25. Keep working, wonderful job! This was what I needed to get.

  26. draco says:

Rihanna is becoming another Lindsey Lohan with her out-of-control partying and obvious drug and alcohol addictions. In a while, she will be forgotten about for another over-sexualized starlet that the media will ram down our throats.

  27. Al says:

Conservative Abu Dhabi ha that’s becoming an oxymoron. Abu Dhabi officials and people behind TDIC and Abu Dhabi cultural events are so hungry for international attention. The film festival is another venue with the red carpet show off revealing dresses with an add on to the already hot weather of UAE is nothing but desired by the organizers of both Abu Dhabi and Dubai version of the so called film festivals.
To those who want to see the real conservative Abu Dhabi go and visit all the nightclubs, bars and hotels of the city not mentioning shopping malls and the beaches both privet and public.
